..yeah, I especially love that one as well Zee..it's hard to believe it's not a photo..?...they each take around 100 hours to draw and are mostly drawn from memory after studying the photographs..:amazed:...quite incredible..they sell for around £10,000..maybe you could commission one of the Sugarbabes for your birthday..?..I'm sure members on TiBB would chip in for that...anyway, I'll post a few more of his because they're just so stunningly good....

..I don't know if this is art but a Hamburg based company want to make 3D sculptures as common as a family portrait..they can create 3D-printed lifelike photo figurines just by scanning a person 'faster than the blink of an eye', just like in photography.

Previous approaches have seen subjects having to stand still for up to 20 minutes for computer software to map out their bodies

The company say they can scan virtually anyone, including babies, children, dogs or cats and plan to set up shops in major cities around the world...

The cutting-edge process sees the subject standing in the middle of a specialised array of cameras. The system takes almost a whole room and measures 4.5m in diameter...

A scan is taken and when the customer is happy with their pose or expression the post production and moulding process can begin. The final models are so detailed they capture the proportions of your body and every crease in your clothing...

The figures are made using an eco-friendly material called high-performance composite. A state-of-the-art printer creates the objects from a white powder which is laid out layer by layer and solidified by multiple jets working on one print session for hours...

..and it's weird how colour changes things as well because through each section it looks like a view of a different sky..but it is like seeing a lone flower on a stark winter day and colour seems to make things 'happy', I guess that's why we all cheer up in the springtime when things start coming into bloom...

Christian Faur’s "Parrish" is an uncanny piece which is made with hundreds of crayons and depicts the haunting image of a child that disappeared. On show in Chelsea, US.

Yeah, I would love to view his works in a gallery space. They look amazing up close. Your perception of the image would change with distance I expect.

..it's the same principal as pixilation isn't it..on close up you would probably lose the image completely but the colours would be very vivid but further away you would lose that colour to an extent but the image would be clear..it's just something you would have to see to appreciate fully...I wonder how long it takes him to create a piece..

I've no idea, but I would imagine it could be quite a painstaking process. A lot of trial and error would be involved I suspect.

"Because of the three-dimensional nature of the crayons, the individual surface images appear to change form as one moves about the gallery space. The images completely disappear when viewed from close up, allowing one to read the horizontally sequenced crayon text and to take in the beautifully colored crayon tips."

Apparently one piece takes "several days". He seems to know what he's doing though and exactly what colours to use. He must have some kind of "map" before he assembles a piece.

...ahh thank you that's interesting..I should think he draws them all out in 'dot art' and then works out the crayons, which probably takes the longest time and assembles it all together...I wonder if he covers the crayons with anything to preserve them...

"I have developed a mapping system that translates the English alphabet into 26 discrete colors and I use these crayon "fonts" to add words and language to each of the pieces in the show."

Definitely. I think you become more emotionally involved with some of Christian's works and the thought process is different. Ben's work is clever, but personally I like pieces that make me think. I suppose it depends on the subject matter, but also in the way it's presented. An image of an everyday object can sometimes convey such emotion just by the way it is portrayed. Even in abstract art.

I once had a print of Salvador Dali's "Phone on the beach" hung on my wall, but it gave me such a sense of foreboding I had to take it down and replace it with something else.

..I adore Van Gogh mostly because of his passion and how 'frantic' he was...the thing I also love is that you can see in his paintings and brush strokes which ones he painted in 'calmer' times and when his emotions darkened..the strokes became more frantic..I don't think with him I have a favourite piece because every one of them is so incredibly moving and literally does move you to tears..maybe that's just me lol...hmmm, I like Henry Moore sculptures...Modagliani, the long faces....and also Edward Hopper because similar to Christian Faur, his paintings are of 'loneliness' ...with him, it did always seem that he painted like he felt isolated and alone 'looking in' on the lives he painted....what about you, your favourites..?...

The use and style of brush strokes that you mention about Van Gogh is very interesting.

I am more a fan of post modern and contemporary art.

I love a multitude of Gilbert & George's work mainly for the subject matter and the way they portray it. Also the process involved, where they use local imagery, in whatever form it may be, which they generally photograph in most cases and then hand paint. The different series of works they produce normally have an underlying theme running through them. They use imagery of experiences of what we encounter in everyday life, such as death, fear, race, religion, sex etc, some of which are regarded as "taboo".

I was fortunate enough to visit their largest retrospective exhibition to date at the Tate Modern in 2007. I found the sheer scale of their work overwhelming in most cases and the use of colour quite striking. Some of it even shocking, but I suppose that's the intention.

British artists Andy Moss and Jamie Wardley, representing the Sand In Your Eye sand and ice sculpture gallery, created an unforgettable and thought-provoking work, entitled The Fallen 9000, to commemorate International Peace Day (Sept. 21st).

Together with a group of volunteers, the artists covered the D-Day landing beach in Arromanche, France with the silhouettes of 9000 fallen soldiers. These were created by handing out stencils and then raking the stand to create dark imprints. The imagery is strong and clear – as Wardley said, “The idea is to create a visual representation of what is otherwise unimaginable—the thousands of human lives lost during the hours of the tide during the WWII Normandy landings on June 6, 1944. There will be no distinction between nationalities, they will be known only as The Fallen. It does not propose to be a celebration or condemnation, simply a statement of fact and tribute to life and its premature loss.“

The stenciled human losses existed only briefly before being washed away by the tide, but their message remains

..are you a big fan of pop art in general..?...it's always really interesting talking to people about art and what they like..and I guess why they like it...for me, if I was to hang something on my wall at home I would probably go for something like pop art...but less to do with any 'meaning' of it, more because it's fun and just something that would brighten up a room..shallow, lol....but it wouldn't really 'move' me...

...I don't really like the pretentiousness of art critics, when they tell you what a meaning of a piece of art is because like everything else, I think that's up to the individual to decide for themselves...a piece of art could be very deep and profound and I might not see any of that in it..to me it might be a load of rubbish or just a bland piece of art..when I say I like Van Gogh, it's because there's just something about his paintings that move me in that with his brushwork and how frantic a lot of it is, I can almost feel his emotions...his works to me kind of scream out 'suffering' and that's why it makes me feel so emotional when I look at it..feeling his pain...and things like the 9000 fallen soldiers in the sand, it's the emotions that conjures, which for me makes it a beautiful work of art...I have a friend who is very 'arty', in fact she teaches art and she often will try to explain an artist/a certain work and why I should like it...well, not exactly why I should like it but what it means...and she's the loveliest person but I kind of think to myself all the time, I just don't get it, I don't see it because somehow I just don't connect with that artist..it may be technically good but it just doesn't make me feel anything...I don't think there's any reasoning why you do connect with something including art, you just either do or you don't and no one can tell you what a piece of art means ... you decide that meaning... oh and one of the things I feel, say in the art of Edward Hopper is his loneliness/solitude..as if he always felt like an outsider looking in on life...hmmm, I'm not sure that I would ever hang an Edward Hopper works on my wall though because it isn't really my thing so I don't know if that makes sense....

..oh, sorry for the essay, I'm not sure where that came from...

I suppose I am. I like pieces that use bold, bright colours. I love the use of colour is some abstract art such as with Mark Rothko and Terry Frost.

I believe that a piece of art is viewed differently by people. What one person may see, or what feelings they may have about a piece, another person might not. They in turn could see/feel something different. I think that's what great about art, is that it can have so many connotations for different people.

I do like to hear from the artist though what their intention was and the thought process behind creating something. What their inspiration was. I bought an original piece from an artist once and although I had my own thoughts in my mind about the piece and what it represented for me, I asked them about what their intention was with it, and what it represented to them. I thought it only polite! Ha.

Not everything has a deep meaning for me, I just find some aesthetically pleasing. Different pieces affect me in very different ways. I suppose that's the versatility of art.

In complete contrast to what I said in the first paragraph, Ralph Gibson's "Hand Through A Doorway" always makes me think and wonder. It's not colourful, and it's a really simple in it's depiction, but it casts so many thoughts in my head.

..I love black and white anyway but I see what you mean with that picture..it's kind of one of those 'in between' things where the door could be opening or closing and the hand is hovering..I don't know why but with images like that I always want to know more and the 'story'..who the hand belongs to, are they opening the door/closing it..alone or not..it's a simple image but there's so much more to it...

Definitely. I love a piece like this because it leaves so much to the imagination, and everyone's perception is different and it makes it so much more personal. I always feel a sense of loneliness with that picture. Not personally, but in the subject itself. I like something thought provoking.

'12 Electric Chairs' by Andy Warhol...

..have you seen any Edward Hopper art..?..it's a completely different style and might not be your thing but his art has the same 'loneliness' ..like he's always on the outside of life and looking in and his subjects are often quite solitude figures as well, not quite belonging or a part of it...it's not so much his style of painting itself that I like but more what the images are 'saying'..if that makes sense..

I hadn't really seen much of Edward Hopper's works until you mentioned him. I then had a look at some of his pieces. Morning Sun was one that stuck out for me.

I see what you mean. You can almost feel the emotion from his subjects in the paintings.

..yeah, Morning Sun is a good one, I can see why you like it...it's a lonely figure in an empty space, almost like a prison cell..there is no 'warmth', no sense of 'home' there..and also the outside is mainly the sky, so there is a nothingness about the world she is looking out on..a real 'lonely hearts' feel to it...I think that was his wife, Josephine Hopper, who was also an artist..she was his subject for many of his works..but I think they had quite an abusive/controlling type relationship..so it's also interesting, think, just how he sees and depicts females....

..one of the ones I like is 'House By A Railroad'...my son covered the works of Hopper when he was doing A Level Art and that was the one he chose to study and do in different mediums...we did some stuff together because I always liked to draw my interpretations of the artists he studied, not that I'm that good at art but I just like doing it..and it's nice to do things together like that lol...bonding....anyway I think I like it also because it kind of fits in with my fascination..(and imagination..) of abandoned buildings...something devoid of life and lonely yet that was not it's purpose...it's a bit like Lloyd Grossman..'who lived in a house like this..'...it's just another one that gets your thoughts going and that's what I like most with his works in general...hmmm, I'm not sure that the style is really my thing though if that makes sense....

From what I have seen of Edward Hopper's work, this was not instantly recognisable as one of his. The house looks like it is in a lonely spot. Solemn and sullen. There are no shrubs, trees or flowers. No clouds in the sky. Nothing, apart from an empty train track. Maybe the track is disused and nobody comes there any more. There are no people in it either. A lonely house in a lonely place. I get the feeling it was once loved for and brought someone much happiness. Now it just lies empty and dormant. It reflects the feelings of the person who once lived there maybe.

..hmmm, yeah or maybe Hopper himself felt 'empty and dormant'..loneliness/solitary figures are mostly what he painted...there is also a poem by Edward Hirsch, which he wrote about Hopper's painting and his thoughts were that Hopper felt that the house had 'done something horrible' to the people who had lived in it....

..it is a bit Amityville....:amazed:...

Out here in the exact middle of the day,
This strange, gawky house has the expression
Of someone being stared at, someone holding
His breath underwater, hushed and expectant;

This house is ashamed of itself, ashamed
Of its fantastic mansard rooftop
And its pseudo-Gothic porch, ashamed
of its shoulders and large, awkward hands.

But the man behind the easel is relentless.
He is as brutal as sunlight, and believes
The house must have done something horrible
To the people who once lived here

Because now it is so desperately empty,
It must have done something to the sky
Because the sky, too, is utterly vacant
And devoid of meaning. There are no

Trees or shrubs anywhere--the house
Must have done something against the earth.
All that is present is a single pair of tracks
Straightening into the distance. No trains pass.

Now the stranger returns to this place daily
Until the house begins to suspect
That the man, too, is desolate, desolate
And even ashamed. Soon the house starts

To stare frankly at the man. And somehow
The empty white canvas slowly takes on
The expression of someone who is unnerved,
Someone holding his breath underwater.

And then one day the man simply disappears.
He is a last afternoon shadow moving
Across the tracks, making its way
Through the vast, darkening fields.

This man will paint other abandoned mansions,
And faded cafeteria windows, and poorly lettered
Storefronts on the edges of small towns.
Always they will have this same expression,

The utterly naked look of someone
Being stared at, someone American and gawky.
Someone who is about to be left alone
Again, and can no longer stand it.

~ Edward Hirsch, from Wild Gratitude

I was actually wondering if he had lived there himself once or he had some connection to it in some way. Either something bad had happened there, or it had once brought him joy, and he reminisced back to that. Happier times. In the present he just had a resentment for it, as his life was now void of those emotions. He wished he could go back to those times and that caused him sadness.

In the poem though it says the house is ashamed of itself and must have done something horrible, which now left it desolate. Maybe that's a reflection of Hopper himself?

..I particularly like these parts of the poem and especially the last verse, which is how Hirsch viewed the painting/Hopper but it's not necessarily how Hopper saw himself...I think he's often been quoted as saying that he wasn't 'lonely' and yet that's what he paints...he seemed to have a fascination with certain American architecture so maybe he was just a bit of a Kevin Macleod who was interested in buildings and felt more comfortable painting them or only was able to, when no one lived in them are at times when a family was away, so he wasn't arrested for stalking lol..?....

..the 'ashamed' bit is quite interesting though and I'll look up some stuff because I think but I'm not sure that he was violent/abusive toward his wife..and she is the female subject in a lot of his works and the 'lonely figure'..maybe he painted her as so lonely/isolated because of the person he was and their relationship and maybe he was 'ashamed' because of what he did to her....

..that's the art I like though because I'm not really an 'arty' person, I like paintings/artists that make me think about a picture and kind of imagine a world where it existed..and the people etc in that world and their thoughts/dreams etc..?...

..when in fact..he just quite liked that house and thought he could do a good job of painting it.....perhaps.....
