This house is ashamed of itself, ashamed
Of its fantastic mansard rooftop

The house must have done something horrible
To the people who once lived here

Now the stranger returns to this place daily
Until the house begins to suspect
That the man, too, is desolate, desolate
And even ashamed. Soon the house starts

And then one day the man simply disappears.
He is a last afternoon shadow moving
Across the tracks, making its way
Through the vast, darkening fields.

This man will paint other abandoned mansions,
And faded cafeteria windows, and poorly lettered
Storefronts on the edges of small towns.
Always they will have this same expression,

The utterly naked look of someone
Being stared at, someone American and gawky.
Someone who is about to be left alone
Again, and can no longer stand it

..I particularly like these parts of the poem and especially the last verse, which is how Hirsch viewed the painting/Hopper but it's not necessarily how Hopper saw himself...I think he's often been quoted as saying that he wasn't 'lonely' and yet that's what he paints...he seemed to have a fascination with certain American architecture so maybe he was just a bit of a Kevin Macleod who was interested in buildings and felt more comfortable painting them or only was able to, when no one lived in them are at times when a family was away, so he wasn't arrested for stalking lol..?....

..the 'ashamed' bit is quite interesting though and I'll look up some stuff because I think but I'm not sure that he was violent/abusive toward his wife..and she is the female subject in a lot of his works and the 'lonely figure'..maybe he painted her as so lonely/isolated because of the person he was and their relationship and maybe he was 'ashamed' because of what he did to her....

..that's the art I like though because I'm not really an 'arty' person, I like paintings/artists that make me think about a picture and kind of imagine a world where it existed..and the people etc in that world and their thoughts/dreams etc..?...

..when in fact..he just quite liked that house and thought he could do a good job of painting it.....perhaps.....

Maybe we all just try and read too much into things and he just liked the look of it.

There must be some reasoning behind artists picking out their subjects though. Whether it be aesthetically or psychologically.

I'm like you. I like pieces that make me think, but I also like pieces that use bold colours and are just nice to look at.

The Tate Modern currently have an exhibition of the works of Paul Klee. I had never heard of him before, so I am just having a look at his works. He's a watercolourist that was influenced by expressionism, cubism, and surrealism....so I read. I don't think it's for me though.

What do you think of Damien Hirst's varied works?

..yeah I like bright colours, but I would only have one piece in the room and everything else pale/white because I think that shows it off better anyway..I've just had a look at Paul Klee because he's not someone I know...and I'm not so keen either..they're actually not bold enough for me, the colours look slightly reserved and washed out...I think if you're going to go colour then go colour and don't hold back at all lol....

...hmm, I find Damien Hirst morbid..do you like him..?....

...hmm, I find Damien Hirst morbid..do you like him..?....

Some of his work. I find him quite versatile. It might be a sculpture, a painting, or indeed something else. I think he's quite diverse. I know some of his work can be quite morbid, but some can be intriguing, and some quite beautiful. There is a regimentality in his pieces also which I quite like. Some of his works, like the diamond skull, I don't find interesting at all.

..was it Georgia O'Keefe that painted dead animal skulls/carcasses..?...I must look that up.....hmmm, you see that's far too busy for me and flowers in general just aren't my thing..I'm really not a floral person, either with art or in any other way...but when you look at that piece with the flowers and the cigarette ends/butts...what do you see if anything about that..?..the connection/what it's trying to say..?....because to me it just says some people put their cigarettes out in the flowers, disgusting people lol...well, you kinow what I mean, it just doesn't say anything..it's kind of dead/flat/lacking anything....

I'm not sure about Georgia O'Keefe. I don't think I have seen any of their work.

That piece by Damien Hirst is to do with life, death and addiction. I suppose it's how you view something and what it says to you, and we all have different tastes. The flowers are the first thing you see with this piece, and the colours are quite vivid, the cigarette butts are secondary, and quite alien as to what you would expect. I don't particularly like fussy things either, but I don't see this as overly fussy. I suppose we all see different things. I would find this fussy...

...although it does have something about it. I have always wondered about the significance of this piece...

Not really art, but i've just seen this and can't see anywhere else to put it.

Its a close up of the eye

Picture Notes: Taken with three macro lenses stacked on a zoom lens on a Canon 40D.

Strobist info: I used a Canon Speedlite 430EX (with a Sto-Fen Omnibounce diffuser) tethered to the camera with a Canon OC-E3 Off-Camera Shoe Cord. I handheld the Speedlite in front of my eye on the side of lens. Unfortunately, due to the very shallow depth of field with the macro lenses, I had to take a number of pictures to get this one...temporarily blinding myself.

Using an iron, Benjamin Shine sculpts, presses and pleats the huge single piece of tulle, whose transparent qualities give the portrait more texture and depth. By layering in this way, the artist obtains different tones and shadows that enable him to realistically portray iconic stars like Elizabeth Taylor, elegant abstract faces and other things, such as a pair of elderly hands.

“The idea of ‘painting with fabric’ led to the development of this technique where the portrait image is created through the intricate pleating and pressing of a single length of tulle fabric. The technique aims to utilize the translucent qualities of the tulle fabric to generate various gradients, tones and textures,” - Shine said of his works of art

..I just love these and even though I don't usually do colour, I would definitely have one of these in my house...

Japanese skateboarder and self-taught sculptor Haroshi has creatively combined his two passions by creating striking and stylish pop-culture images out of the wood of trashed skateboards.

The unique appearance of his sculptures is all thanks to the composition of the skateboards he uses, which are created from multiple layers of processed wood. These layers are sometimes dyed as well, which gives his sculptures their distinctive striped appearance. The skateboards are then glued together and carved into various pop-art forms like hearts, skulls, and even sneakers.

As an avid skateboarder, Haroshi often recycles his own skateboards into his artwork. As he writes on his site, “To Haroshi, his art pieces are equal to his skateboards, and that means they are his life itself. They’re his communication tool with both himself, and the outside world.”

..I think these are incredible, they really do look like photographs...

'Although these pictures look like ordinary photographs of fruits and mundane objects, don’t be fooled – they are oil paintings on canvas made by young artist Ruddy Taveras from the Dominican Republic.

Taveras, who is 29 years old, joined the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo ten years ago. In 2008, he decided to devote himself to hyperrealism with the aim to capture reality more accurately and objectively than a photograph. Taveras has already produced many still-lifes and has participated in numerous local and national painting competitions'

i wanted to post some good art, something beautiful, and thought i could think of something to put into google images... but all i could think of was gay porn stars.

I'm such a guy. :(

I like art when i'm not trying to think of art though... i'm not a total guy.

i just can't think of anything... but hot guys...

..yeah, I can see how that one train of thought might be a bit restrictive in finding a variety of artistic works.....

I fell in love with Bridget Riley recently. I love abstract art.

http://www.op-art.co.uk/op-art-gallery/var/resizes/bridget-riley/bridget-riley-arrest-2-1965.jpg?m=1325863772

And I discovered more of Francis Bacon:

Reading more about Francis made his Triptych paintings quite more meaningful. They're quite personal.

..I don't know that much about him/his works but I guess that the 'contortion' of some of his paintings are drawn from life experiences and life pains and I know that a few were emotions he felt about the death/suicide of his partner, which yeah..makes them so very meaningful...it's interesting..(and good..)... that he was able to 'paint it'/that it wasn't too painful to do so....

Helena: The Goldfish Blender

Marco Evaristti, a Danish shock artist, put seven blenders with goldfish in the at a museum. They were all on and had yellow buttons ready to be pushed. The meaning of the project was to give humans the simple question: “Will you kill?”

This guy is someone who will do anything to be noticed. Put him in a blender and I'll press the button.
