'Nails In Bombs'

The FBI has said it will go to the "ends of the Earth" to find those who used pressure cooker bombs to kill three and injure more than 170 people at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The pressure cooker bombs were hidden in duffel bags packed with nails, shards of metal and ball bearings and placed on the ground, around 100m apart along the finishing stretch of the Boston Marathon route, a source close to the investigation has disclosed.

They said that law enforcement officials had some of the bomb components but did not yet know what had been used to set off the explosives.

A 2010 Department of Homeland Security statement warns that terrorists could use pressure cookers to make bombs, saying that at least one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attack comprised a pressure cooker.

The second of the three victims killed in the attack has been named as 29-year-old restaurant manager Krystle Campbell, of Medford, who had been in Boston to take a picture of her boyfriend crossing the finish line.

Her father, William Campbell, says his daughter was "very caring, very loving person, and was daddy's little girl." He says the loss has devastated the family.

President Barack Obama, who has announced he will visit the city on Thursday, labelled the twin-bombing an "act of terror".

Speaking at a news conference, he said: "What we don't yet know, however, is who carried out this attack or why, whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organisation, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual."

He added: "What I have indicated to you is what we now know. We know it was bombs that were set off. We know that obviously they did some severe damage. We do not know who did them.

"We don't have a sense of motive yet. So everything else at this point is speculation."

The FBI said it was following a number of leads in the wake of the attacks but special agent Richard DesLauriers declined to say whether anyone was in custody.

Mr DesLauriers said: "We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime, and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice."

Doctors have revealed the extent of the injuries suffered by those caught in the blasts, including details of a nine-year-old girl who had lost her leg and a 10-year-old boy who suffered deep shrapnel wounds.

Several people have had to have limbs amputated and others are at risk of losing legs following the blasts that ripped through crowds during the city's marathon.

Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of several hospitals where victims were taken, told reporters eight people were in a "severe" condition.

Alisdair Conn, chief of emergency services, said: "This is something I've never seen in my 25 years here ... this amount of carnage in the civilian population. This is what we expect from war."

A total of 17 people remain in a critical condition.

The first victim killed in the blasts in the heart of the city to be named was eight-year-old Martin Richard , who lived in Boston.

Martin had been waiting with his brother, sister and mother at the finish line for his father, who was running the race.

The bombs went off within seconds of each other and about 100m (330ft) apart on the same street, blowing out windows and sending smoke and debris into the air.

The explosions happened four hours into the race and about two hours after the men's winner had crossed the line, as amateur runners were reaching the finish.

More than 17,000 competitors had completed the race by the time the blasts struck.

Police commissioner Ed Davis said the area around the blast areas is the most complex crime scene in history of the department.

Authorities are now looking for amateur video and photographs that can give clues to who set off the bombs.

Security has been stepped up in Washington and New York, and Boston itself is a city on high alert, with armoured vehicles seen on the streets on Tuesday and random checks of backpacks on public transport.

Earlier, a plane was grounded at the city's Logan Airport over security concerns.

There have been no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack, the most serious in the US since the 9/11 World Trade Centre atrocity. Al Qaeda-linked groups and militant white extremists have attacked targets in America in the past.

The Pakistani Taliban, who have previously threatened attacks in the US, have denied any involvement.

Police are said to have questioned a 20-year-old Saudi Arabian man who is being treated for injuries at a hospital in Boston. Officers have searched his apartment in Revere, according to his flatmate.

More than 25,000 people were registered as taking part in the race, 374 of whom were British. There were also 108 Irish athletes.

The British Foreign Office has said it is not aware of any British nationals who have been injured but that it will continue to monitor the situation.

Police in London have reviewed security plans for Sunday's London Marathon. London's Met Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said authorities were sharing information with colleagues in America.

Speaking at a news conference today, he said there would be greater security checks and more police officers on the streets for the event.

The London race's chief executive, Nick Bitel, said it was "a very sad day for athletics and for our friends in marathon running".

There will be a 30-second silence ahead of the start to honour the victims of the Boston bombings. Runners will also be encouraged to wear black ribbons

The second of three people killed in Monday’s bomb attack at the Boston Marathon was identified on Tuesday as Krystle Campbell, said the mayor of Medford, Massachusetts, the city where the 29-year-old woman had grown up.

Campbell told Yahoo News that ”She helped everybody, and I’m just so shocked right now. We’re just devastated. She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand.”

The restaurant manager had gone with a friend, Karen Rand, to take a picture of the Rand’s boyfriend crossing the finish line. According to Yahoo News, Rand survived, but was undergoing surgery for “serious injuries.” Cheryl Rand Engelhardt, reportedly the friend’s sister-in-law, wrote on Facebook that Rand was carrying Campbell’s ID, and was believed to be Krystle until she came out of surgery.

Rand Engelhardt went on: ”No words can describe how much [Krystle] meant to all of us. She was an incredible woman, always full of energy and hard at work, but never too tired to share her love and a smile with everyone. She was an inspiration to all of us. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We are continuing to remain positive for Karen and ask that you keep her in your prayers as well.”

Medford Mayor Michael McGlynn said he had spoken with Campbell’s father.

“Mr. Campbell said that she certainly was a dream daughter, the daughter that every father dreams to have and friends of hers said that she was eager about life. She had a great sense of humor and freckles and red hair that brought her right to her Irish roots. She was someone who worked hard at everything she did,” McGlynn said. “Another friend said she may have been a little loud at times but it was a loudness you loved.”

Earlier, the family of 8-year-old Martin Richard confirmed their son’s death in the incident.

“Shenyang girl… was killed in the Boston bomb blast,” the city’s Liaoshen Evening News wrote on its Twitter-like Weibo account.

The student’s name was widely cited on social media and in some Chinese news outlets but state news agency Xinhua said the victim’s family did not want her name made public.

The 23-year-old, who was studying at Boston University, was reportedly waiting near the marathon’s finishing line with two friends when two explosions threw the event into chaos.

One of those friends, Zhou Danling, was in a “stable condition” on Tuesday night after undergoing two operations at the Boston Medical Center, according to Xinhua. The other friend was unharmed.

The announcement of the student’s death came after a number of concerned friends and classmates had taken to social media to report she was “missing”. One friend posted a telephone number on Twitter with the message: “Help us find her! We can’t find her!”

The student’s father also expressed his fears to a local newspaper on Tuesday. “We haven't been able to contact her. Why didn't she make a call to tell us she's safe?” he told the Shenyang Evening News.

The Chinese victim was raised in the northeastern province of Liaoning and studied at Shenyang’s Northeast Yucai Middle School.

She left that school in 2008, according to the Liaoshen Evening News, and secured a place at the prestigious Beijing Institute of Technology where she studied international trade.

In 2010, she spent 2 months doing work experience at the Bank of China in her home province, according an entry on her LinkedIn page. She also spent four months working in Beijing for Deloitte Consulting between 2011 and 2012.

Late last year, after graduating in Beijing, she moved to the United States to study for a Master’s degree at Boston University.

“New Hampshire is such a great place!” the victim wrote on her Facebook page on October 7 last year.

Towards the start of her time in the United States, the student travelled to the Toah Nipi Retreat, a countryside retreat for Christians around 90 minutes drive from Boston. The retreat’s website describes it as “a place to come away, meet God, and be renewed”.

The student also appears to have been a fan of classical music – her Facebook page contains a link to the site of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

By Wednesday morning, friends and micro-bloggers had posted over 5,000 messages on the student’s Weibo account, underneath a photograph she posted just hours before being killed in Boston. The photograph, of that day’s breakfast, carried the caption: “My wonderful breakfast.”

“An innocent victim of terrorist attack,” wrote one micro-blogger under the name Zhakutahetu_Dazhi. “There is no evil in paradise. I wish you a good journey!”

“I don't want to believe it is true,” wrote another.

One of the most haunting images to come out of the Boston bombings is of a young man in a wheelchair, his legs blown off, being rushed to help by three people, including a man in a cowboy hat.

The young man's name is Jeff Bauman, and he is in a stable condition in hospital.

The cowboy-hat wearing good samaritan is Carlos Arredondo. When the first blast went off Arredondo immediately ran to the site of the blast across the street and vaulted the security fence to get to victims. Video footage shows him among first responders in his distinctive cowboy hat, bending to help the wounded.

Arredondo saw severed limbs, a pool of blood, and a young man in a gray sweatshirt trying to stand. "He had no legs," Arredondo said in a later interview.

A second bomb went off nearby, but Arredondo stayed focused on the young man. "I told him, my name's Carlos, you're going to be OK, help is on the way,'" Arredondo said.

He applied tourniquets which he made by ripping up a sweater. With his friend John Mixon, a Vietnam Veteren, Arredondo put the young man in a wheelchair brought by EMS staff, then started moving as fast as he could while apparently holding shut an artery. "I kept talking to him. I kept saying, 'Stay with me, stay with me,' " Arredondo said. A young woman and police officer joined him pushing the wheelchair close to the ambulances.

The young man was still conscious when he was taken to hospital. "I told him,' You're going to be fine,'" Arredondo says.

Bauman's father told the NY Times that Arredondo had saved his son's life.

Arredondo is known nationally as a peace activist himself after his son, US Marine Corporal Alexander Arredondo, was killed in combat in Iraq in 2004. Arredondo was at the marathon supporting a group running in memory of fallen veterans, including his son.

This is just one of many stories of bravery and compassion that will emerge from the marathon.

Their friend Mike Jefferson, who they went to watch run in the marathon, was at the hospital waiting to see his friends.

“I was a quarter-mile away from the finish line [when the bombings happened],” he said.

It was reported that the man in blue was being sought by the FBI. Since then, he has used his Facebook account to deny any wrongdoing.

The brother of the track athlete told ABC News that Salah went to the police on April 17 to clear his name. Their mother was “sick and upset” that Salah had been connected to the horrifying attack.

Salah told ABC News, “It’s the worst feeling that I can possibly feel… I’m only 17.”

But they would have done that without the photo too. I think photos like that one just feed our desire to see and know everything, even if it's a bit morbid in this instance. It's nothing new, ever since photography was invented, people have been taking photos of things that perhaps the world didn't need to see. There's no doubt that photos like that one make things more 'real' to the rest of the world... you're not going to forget seeing a photo like that one in a hurry - hearing about a guy who ran over to help another guy is one thing, but to see him holding this man's artery shut is on a whole different emotional level.

It's nothing against this specific photo per se, it's more the paparazzi in general. It's kinda grotesque, but having said that, I'm happily looking at these kinds of images too so I guess that's why they're published. People want to see these things, even if they don't think they want to. That's the media's motto.

its a strange one.. my instincts in this situation would be to help and the last thing id want to do is start taking photos.. but like you said we're sitting here looking at the photos. I'm a bit confused if I read this story straight, apparently these college aged kids are the perps. One suspect dead. They had weapons and pipe bombs, etc. the video of these two at the marathon were carrying a grey and black book bag respectively. Yet the bag placed next to the mailbox is white and beige.

Furthermore it is being said they are from Chechnya or possibly Turkey. Turkey = Ally .....hmm, reminds me of all those Saudi's on 911. What beefs do Chechnya have against us? Don't they have enough issues with Russia? These kids ("terrorists") were walking around oblivious there would be cameras at the marathon yet ave been living in the area for a couple years.

No they still are unable to locate this guy. I suspect he must be receiving help from other or have planned his moves very carefully although I'm not sure why a terrorist would need to hold up a seven 11.
