Jeff Bauman was still in intensive care, heavily sedated after surgery, but he had something he desperately needed to tell his brother. “He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,’” Chris Bauman said. Jeff, the ashen-faced, wheelchair-bound man in that iconic photo taken in the aftermath of Monday's Boston Marathon bombings, gave a description of the suspect to the FBI, telling them that he wore "a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt." He told them that he locked eyes with the attacker as he placed the bomb-filled bag at the finish line — the bomb that took both of Bauman's legs

I think they knew he was still in Watertown the entire time, but made it look as though everything was over, and let people out of their homes. Whoever didn't come out, they'd know they were maybe being held hostage. In this case, they got lucky and the boat owner didn't get hurt. Well done on taking him in alive. One who dismisses life so easily deserves to see this through.

To his father, he was a 'true angel', and to a family friend 'a beautiful boy in a tux' at a prom party. His schoolmates found nothing remotely strange or off-putting about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

He was an all-star member of the wrestling team at the prestigious the Rindge and Latin state school in Cambridge, and winner of a $2,500 scholarship in 2011, his final year.

He then won a place at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth where his father, Anzor, said he was in the second year of a medical degree.

Dzhokhar obtained a green card allowing him to stay in the US in 2007, and became a naturalised United States citizen on September 11, 2012, according to his father.

Friends and acquaintances expressed confusion and dismay at how a sociable if reserved 19-year-old became America's most wanted man, a bomber on the run who spread carnage on innocent people watching the marathon

The only outward clue perhaps of Tsarnaev's descent into terrorism was the fact that he was sacked as a lifeguard at Harvard University swimming pool last summer after turning up late once too often.

Otherwise, he appeared normal. A high school friend, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "As recently as November I played pick up basketball with him and he seemed like he was doing great at UMASS Dartmouth. I don't know what changed since then but evidently it was something pretty big."

In the privacy of his own home, Tsarnaev had an alternative life, clearly attached to a homeland, Chechnya, he had never even visited, and to its faith, Islam.

On his account with the Russian social networking site, VKontakte (In Contact) he says he speaks English, Russian and Chechen but was born in Dagestan, a province of Russia bordering Chechnya.

He lists his "World View" as Islam and his "Personal Priority" as "career and money".

He posted a video expressing sympathy with rebels fighting in Syria, and a clip of a Kuwaiti sheikh talking to a blind boy who memorised the Koran.

He also has links to pages calling for independence for Chechnya, which lost its bid for secession from Russia after two bloody wars in the 1990s.

The page also reveals a sense of humour. The latest post on the account – uploaded on March 19 – is a video called "The bro did good" and features a young man sitting in the back of a car and smiling as he mimics several different accents from the Caucasus region, and recounts stereotypes about each ethnic group. It could be his dead brother Tamerlan. Beneath the video is a comment: "Islam is not a religion of terror! Judge Muslims on Islam, and not vice versa!"

He also retells some jokes about the unfair treatment of Muslims in the North Caucasus.

One reads: "They have this riddle in school. There is a car. Inside are a man from Dagestan, a second man from Chechnya and a third man from Ingushetia. Question – who is driving the car? Answer – the police."

Friends and acquaintances may have recognised the funniness, but had no inkling of the real Dzokhar, whom they called Jahar because they were unable to pronounce his name.

One classmate vented his shock on Instagram: "I don't believe I know that bomber…And I've known him fro yeaaaarssss!!!! Dzho this is ridiculous man .. what happened bro, daaaamn I thought u loved us dude!!!!"

Rebecca, another high school friend, recalled: "I think he seemed to keep to himself in that he was kind of reserved, but his demeanour was always friendly and he would show up at the big social gatherings. He was a familiar part of the community, he didn't isolate himself."

On another social networking site Larry Aaronson, a retired teacher at the Rindge and Latin school, was at a loss to understand Tsarnaev's wickedness.

"I knew this kid. He could not have possibly have done this. He could not have been a sweeter more gracious young man. I cannot believe he was capable of such a heinous crime and of so many murders."

He concluded: "As the old Hebrew expression goes. You got to be f------- me… (BUT THEY ARE NOT)."

Thousands have been tirelessly picking through the evidence - every piece of video footage, every photo, every eyewitness account they can get their hands on.

Big brother pressured him, he'll say (as everyone else here has said), and he'll give up links and connections. He'll be on guard 24-7 so he won't be able to commit suicide, and yes, he lost his chance only hours ago. It's really sucky here, because he was probably coerced by his older brother and is taking the penalty, but he did follow through with it, and in an abnormal manner of casting his face all over the news without keeping his hat brim down. I find this Times Square thing a little strange. First off..who is leaking his confidential information to the media..very dangerous thing to do really. Secondly, the homeland security officer said live on TV yesterday that since being read his rights, the suspect has been absolutely silent. Which means he must have 'confessed' about this plan to bomb NY on Monday. The press conference and such about it made out as if he had just said this and that it was totally new information.

There is absolutely no way this guy will get a fair trial. I know some wont care about that as it does look very much like he is guilty. But unless the jury have been living under rocks for the past week or so, they will already have made up their minds (by media trial) that he is 100% guilty. This is before even seeing the evidence that the police reckon they have.

If you think about it, the only we know for sure so far is that the marathon was bombed and the brothers were there. There was some kind of a standoff..and the older brother is now dead. The younger one in custody. And that the affadavit of an officer states that there is a video showing the younger brother placing his backpack in the area where the bomb went off, then calmly walking away without it. Everything else has come via the media..and the media story has chopped and changed so much that I don't know how much of it we can believe.

I am not saying the police have it wrong in this case. But I cant help thinking of all the falsehoods in the De Menezes case. And how it turned out that police lied to cover their tracks after killing an innocent man. That whole story made me question what the authorities say tbh.

Very good points Vicky. I do think it'll be hard to get a fair trial conducted, I think this case has emotionally impacted America in a way that's not been seen since the 9/11 attacks. The fact a little boy died in the blast has given it a tragic poster boy and I think that's emotionally charged this case even more... if three adults had died, people would have still been emotionally affected by this, but the death of a little boy and the crippling of his sister, that just takes it to a whole new level of public grief. I hope that the trial is fair, but I imagine it'll be fast tracked and he'll be given an overwhelming sentence.

Yes I agree this guy is not going to see the light of day anytime soon. I have followed this case through all forms of media incl Radio,TV, Internet and Social Media I have to say I am confused the sheer amount of contradictory reports and jumbled confused timelines make me wonder of there isn't a lot more to this story than official sources report.

It's a conspiracy theorists dream and will be discussed on Internet forums for a long time to come. I hope the truth comes out someday but I wouldn't hold your breath...!!!

Three college friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have been charged by police investigating the attacks.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev are charged with conspiring to obstruct justice. A third man, Robel Phillipos, is charged with making false statements to federal investigators.

The suspects are accused of removing a backpack containing fireworks emptied of gunpowder from Tsarnaev's dorm room three days after the bombings.

In court papers, the FBI said Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev agreed to throw the backpack in the garbage after concluding from news reports that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was one of the bombers.

Law enforcement officers later found the backpack in a landfill.

Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev, who came to the US from Kazakhstan, have been held in jail for more than a week on allegations they violated their student visas while attending college.

There is also information that Tazhayakov was allowed to re-enter the US in January from Kazakhstan despite not having a valid student visa.

The Kazakhs waived bail during an initial court appearance on Wednesday. They are scheduled to appear in court again on May 14.

Phillipos, a US citizen, is being held pending a detention and probable cause hearing scheduled for Monday.

Attorneys for Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov told reporters on Wednesday their clients did not know the items they removed from Tsarnaev's room were linked to the attacks.

Tazhayakov's attorney, Harlan Protass, said: "My client feels horrible and was shocked to hear that someone he knew was involved in the bombings."

Kadyrbayev's lawyer, Robert Stahl, said his client "absolutely denies the charges".

Both men face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a \$250,000 fine, the US Justice Department said.

Phillipos faces up to eight years in prison and a \$250,000 fine.

All three men, aged 19, began attending the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with Tsarnaev at the same time in 2011, according to the FBI.

The university said in a statement that Tazhayakov has been suspended "pending the outcome of the case". The school said Phillipos and Kadyrbayev are not currently enrolled.

The trio were not accused of any involvement in the bombing itself. But in a footnote in the court papers, the FBI said that about a month before the bombing, Tsarnaev told Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev that he knew how to make a bomb.

Three people were killed and more than 260 injured on April 15 when two bombs exploded near the finish line.

Suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev died after a gunfight with police several days later. His brother Dzhokhar was captured and lies in a hospital prison.

The surviving brother, 19, faces federal charges of using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death over the double bombing.

Authorities say the brothers also killed an MIT police officer as they tried to escape, although no charges have been filed yet over his death.

The White House and investigators have previously suggested that the Tsarnaevs could have acted alone, without ties to any foreign government or terrorist organisation.

Another example of this guys legs being blown off and he's being taken by the paramedics whilst he's sitting and not showing the pain in his face with no blood dripping from his blown off legs, then the witness testimony on video shows these witnesses were related to other past incidents. How can the same witness be part of the same events and other big events? doesn't it look fishy? Then the one where they go on the man hunt and they shoot the suspect then they show him alive (naked man) who looked the exact same man they said to have killed but they changed their story saying it was a random man. I need proof of those who died, sofar there was no death, look at the interview of those people who got their legs blown off few days later, they don't look in pain, they are wearing makeup and giving a comfortable interview. There's a lot of things that could come out of these stage events, like the support on war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and many factors. Go and see the videos of these event with an open mind, and these are not coming from the Muslim source.
