Coronation Street producers are reportedly going introduce a Cash Converters-style store to the serial.
ITV soap bosses are said to be launching a new shop onto the street in order to reflect credit-crunch Britain, according to the Sunday Mirror.
Cast members and staff have apparently been asked to donate unwanted items to use in the shop's display as a way of saving money.
A memo has allegedly been sent to crew members for unused cameras, laptops, computers, game consoles and other electrical goods.
A show insider said: "Executives want the new-look Coronation Street to reflect the modern high street. And most of them now have a cut-price store where you can get a bargain.
"Bosses are asking for those on the show to donate items because there has been pressure to try and keep the cost of the move to a minimum.
"Both cast and crew are being asked to look in the loft for anything they might be able to pass on."
The move is said to be part of the ITV soap's relocation to Salford Quays.
Back in February, it was rumoured that Coronation Street will begin shooting in 3D.

Next Corrie will be having typewriters and we will be going back in a timewarp. I think the CC is a good idea though!

That's a good idea as it reflects Britain now. Although only one is good as we don't want two or three

Hey! Long time no see!
I agree, it's a bit weird that the show has never had any "chain stores" (obviously they can't use real store names, but they can use a fake chain name). I reckon Rob might be behind the shop opening.

Another business on the tiny backstreet? Makes sense.
I'm baffled as to why there aren't more people roaming the cobbles as it is, it's practically becoming the City Centre. They'll bring the town hall in next.

The street itself is supposed to be pretty close to the Weatherfield precinct though :p Rosamund Street (where the medical centre is) is a main road right into Manchester itself.

They have. They used to have 'Firmans Freezers' & 'Freshco' which were meant to be chains of supermarkets...

It makes sense I guess, a lot more could be done I think as to the residents and the shops in Corrie, you can cram a lot of lines and people into some storylines using those outlets.

They should actually have the corner shop turned into a Tesco Metro or something, surely now with product placement they could actually have a proper branded shop & it would be a massive advertising money maker for ITV...

I'm thinking this shop opens when the Bookies closes
I like them not having any mass chain shops, reinforces the small street community feeling that Corrie has
