may seem daft but do they get a basic rate for being in there i mean how do they pay their bills etc

They used to get a small allowance (I think it was about £50 per day)

I think it's around £250 a week to cover bills etc while they are out of circulation.

For some of them that's probably more than their normal income! ;)
