Seems the similarities pointed out on the forums were acknowledged by the show and the idea run by Dead Set's writer (and fan of the show) Charlie Brooker (of Screenwipe and 10 O'Clock Live fame) for approval:

When queried about the similarities by Twitter user @algernonradish earlier today, the Weekly Wipe presenter responded: “They graciously checked we didn’t mind, which we didn’t. BB team were very very good to us throughout Dead Set.”
