Orange Is the New Black is an American comedy-drama series, created by Jenji Kohan which first aired on Netflix on July 11, 2013. The series, produced by Lionsgate Television, is based on Orange Is the New Black by Piper Kerman, a memoir about her own experiences in prison. Orange Is the New Black stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a woman imprisoned for transporting drug money. The series also stars Laura Prepon as Alex Vause, a drug dealer and Piper's former lover; Michael J. Harney as prison counselor Sam Healy; Michelle Hurst as Miss Claudette, a fellow inmate; Kate Mulgrew as the inmate cook "Red," and Jason Biggs as Piper's fiancé Larry Bloom.

I did a quick search for a thread on this, and I couldn't find one so forgive me if there's already is. I'm a kinda surprised about that actually..

But anyway, does anyone else watch this? It's a Netflix exclusive comedy-drama about life in an American women's prison, and holy hell is it good. I'm halfway through the first season and I already love it! :amazed:

Just finished this, very good.

I love Alex :love: so I'm gutted that Prepon's leaving the show. The rest of the cast are super strong and even the very minor characters have shone (which is a great feat considering how many of them there are).

Satisfying finale though, even though you know she'll get in **** I was so glad Piper beat Pennsatucky's annoying ass :love: that said, she's a great character also.

The only gripe I have is that I reeeally don't buy the Daya/Bennett storyline. It was alright and more endearing when it was sweet and innocent but when she got pregnant it felt a bit... too soon? I also find Piper a bit grating at times, but that's probably because I generally get irked by goody-good types. :laugh:

But yeah, it's a great cast and set of characters overall. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

All the characters were amazing and flushed out well. Piper was the weak point in the series though, the scenes with the minor characters were so much better than hers.

Binge watched the entire second season in a day.

The whole main story (Vee vs Red) was pretty ****ing awesome but I'm gutted that Red didn't get to have a final master plan. She's so ****ing badass and I feel that Vee could've gone down in a bigger way (props to both actresses also :love:)

Finding out about other inmates pasts has been great also. Poussey made for an incredibly likeable underdog and was probably my favourite character this season. Suzanne (I can't call her crazy eyes anymore lol) was also brilliant and Uzo Aduba definitely deserves some recognition for her acting. Morellos story was dark but I could kiiinda see it coming, I still found it pretty funny though tbh. Gloria's past was okay if a little predictable and Cindys didn't really seem to go anywhere but she's probably been one of the funniest this season. Taystee was a better more rounded character this season but I missed her natural comic ability.

The subtle changes in Pipers character has worked kinda well but I can't say I cared for the whole Larry/Polly/Piper cluster****. Bad or good person however, I did miss Alex a bit on the show. She was in it much more than I thought she would be and God is Laura Prepon good at making her likeable.

Daya and Bennett though ugh... I just cannot root for them when Daya's constantly moody as balls and Bennett's just awkward. I don't know if it's intentional for them to have no real chemistry to set us up for a fall but I think it's probably the weakest part of the show (still)

I reeeeally hope the third season follows Rosa in her final "blaze of glory" but I've got the feeling it's the last we see of her :( I really hope Fischer comes back as well because however hard they tried to make the other prison staff likeable it's just not happening for me.

But yeah, a fantastic addictive new season that I'd recommend to everyone and anyone. It's funny, it's shocking, it's moving, the game changes with nearly every episode and the cast is incredible. God bless this show.

Not in my opinion. It is amongst the very best of American dramas. No British drama even comes close. It will have you feeling depressed one minute and then laughing your head off the next.

Literally the only way I've got all my straight friends to watch it is by telling them of all the lesbian sex scenes and boobs in the majority of episodes. :tongue:

It's kinda like Bad Girls but I think it's a million times better (and I loved Bad Girls). It's so engaging and the strong female cast just keeps you hooked. It doesn't rely on prison drama and focuses very much on the people themselves. *Most* of it is based on a true story which helps the show incredibly. I'm glad they have Piper Kerman working with them to ensure a realistic show stays that way.

I finished watching the whole of season two tonight. Amazing series on the whole. Although for me it is just on par with season one and doesn't quite exceed it. Not a bad thing, given how constricting a drama in a prison can be the writers have kept it very smooth going and have made more great use of flashback scenes.

Some spoilerific stuff:

Haven't got much to say so will keep it short(ish) and sweet.

I wasn't happy with the lack of Alex throughout the series, although knowing this prior to watching I was surprised she was in it as much as she was. With her (reportedly) being back in the limelight for season three I'm looking forward to seeing her develop next year.

I really liked Vee, Lorraine Toussaint has done a superb job at portraying a dark character that knows how to play the game and act sweet. Shame she is dead as I was hoping we could see more of her in a future series. Maybe she isn't dead and just unconscious? Although getting hit at that speed I'm sure would have killed her, shame.

Piper not being shown as much wasn't too bad. I really like Piper so I'm glad she wasn't cut out completely. Her character development was good this series too so no complaints.

Really wasn't bothered about Larry on the outside. Now I think the main issue with Larry is the fact he's being portrayed by Jason Briggs. I really wish someone else was given the role. Anyway, seeing him doing his thing didn't interest me in the slightest. When it came down the the Polly/Larry thing in the end I got even more bored by then. I hope we see less of Larry in the next season, although I doubt it as in real life the real Piper Kerman......married Larry. Considering the show has roughly followed events in the book the writers are one day going to have to find a way of getting Larry to love Piper again. I'm not sure if I can take heavy screentime of Jason Briggs.

Really loved Red and Piper's little friendship. I hope this continues next year and we see more of them together. I think they have a nice bond going on!

Finally, loved the whole Vee vs Red storyline. I have enjoyed the concentration on black people too. I generally find black people to be written terribly in films and TV shows, or left as background characters. Although on OITNB they are written brilliantly and in the limelight which is fantastic to see and a breath of fresh air.

Oh, and one character who was in season one and not in this season... Miss ClaudetteI missed a lot. If they could ever get her back I would love to see her return to the show.

Mary Steenburgen has been cast to appear in the new series too.

I absolutely despise Vee and Fig and to see them each get their comeuppance made me so ****ing happy omg. Same thing with Mendez too.

BUT did Daya really annoy anyone else this season? I thought she was being a massive tool when she kept telling Bennett to confess. It seemed really out of character to me, and as ****ing if you'd actually start acting that way in her situation. I don't know. I didn't like it anyways.

It was absolutely flawless. I preferred season 1 to season 2, but the characters are brilliant and I love how it's almost like Lost with the flashbacks, and how there's main character but a large majority of the inmates are also essential to the show. :love:

I'm enjoying it a lot so far, the only thing I don't like is the fact that it's so predominantly focused on Piper, She's the least interesting character on the show and I think the first season would be so much stronger if she was featured less and other characters were given the spotlight. We do not need a Piper Flashback every episode.

Only three months till the next series has me literally so excited. OITNB is by far the best series on Netflix I've watched breaking bad but I still think OITNB is way better. I watched the first series in April this year it took me a week to watch then three days to watch the second series.

i prefered season 2 so much more, half of the cast disappearing made it ****, i liked that they focused on smaller characters each episode, but it all felt like something was missing.

The main problem with this season seems to be that there was no big villain and no intense drama. It's quite a light hearted and fun series.

Maybe Netflix are certain OITNB will be around for many years though so production opted for a lighter season compared to last year, then in 2016 we will go back to a heavier/more serious/more dramatic season.

I haven't finished season 3 yet although I am enjoying it. It just lacks that intense drama the last two seasons have had. Not a bad thing though, if this show is around for a long time I don't mind one season being a bit more fun and not too heavy on the eyes. If season 4 continues like this though we may have a problem...

Just finished the first episode of series one and I'm really excited for this series it seems great. I just hope we get to see a little more from certain characters like Yoga Jones and Nicky this series as the last series was very heavily focused on the whole Vee and Red storyline.

So far seems a good balance with story lining though.

I liked the turnaround in likeability for Pennsatucky's character but...hmm... I feel like some of the characters have made pretty unrealistic turnarounds? Like Piper's a good example, obviously, just an overnight badass? Please. And the sudden introduction of a bit of transphobia for Sophia's character... if anything it was obviously unrealistic in the first place to introduce her as this sort of beloved, sassy hairdresser with no enemies or conflict, and then this season just sought to ruin her in every way possible. Caputo too, bit of an obvious "becoming part of the machine" story.

Smaller thoughts:
- STOP TRYING TO MAKE RED/SAM HAPPEN. IT DARE NOT ****ING HAPPEN.
- I'm over Norma. Taking all season to realise she led a clique of idiots... I don't care if her backstory was sad, she's a ****ing moron and I'm bored with her.
- I kinda ship Boo/Pennsatucky
- and Soso/Poussey
- Characters I loved this season: the new counsellor, the new inmate from Chicago with the glasses and the paranoia, Flaca, Ang, Black Cindy 10000x more, Big Boo 100000x more, Chang <333333
- Characters I did not love this season: Electrics guy, rapey guy, Daya's mom, Daya actually, Caputo (blah), every bitch who crossed Sophia and shall - if the writers know what they're doing - drown in that lake in the finale at the hands of a mysterious trans-rights spirit.
- I WANT TO HUG PORNSTACHE'S MUM.

In general I don't quite side with the majority of complaints about this season - I don't think the show needs a villain per series to root against for it to be a success or compelling, the characters and backstories are more than enough for me already. The only thing I'd bemoan is the rushedness of it all - the sudden changes of character, the increase in trying to put across backstories and flashbacks towards the end of the season (like did anyone really really care about that running girl's Muslim father, or Sindy's crazy authoritarian father?) - but at the same time I'm kinda intrigued to learn more about other characters too (Yoga Jones, more of Boo, Maritza, that woman who's always crying on the phone / about toast-Norma)

Speaking of flashbacks, how amazing was the brief Rosa return? :flutter:
