He went for the money, he's spoken to Gina before about how he would never take the money if given the opportunity to take it and leave the show early like Connor.

He's continually told them how he's not in there for the money and its' about his journey and experience.

So going in there and taking 88,000 meant if everyone else picked the highest available, he would walk out with the money, something he said he wouldn't do, thus tricking them.
