View Full Version : Just a little FYI...
Just because Sam has a disability doesn't automatically means if he wins he has to give it to charity.
I saw a lot of people frowning upon him for not doing it after he won a sum of money from Deal or no deal.
I feel that this is an awful assumption.

'playing up the disability'?
So mentioning that he's found things difficult, or that he wamnts to be a rolemodel for deaf kids means he automatically has to eschew any financial gain from competitions?
Sorry, that doesn't make any sense.

He's done it since Day 1 when he said he would use his disability to his advantage and folk have fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Well Sam shouldn't go berserk about how other people spend their money then should he? It works both ways.

In an earlier VT Sam said he will give 25% to charity ( no idea which on he never said ) and 25% to his mum and keep the rest for himself. If he does win we will see just how genuine he is after saying that but my gut feeling is it will all go down the pub toilets.
Then he should stop playing up the disability for the cash then!
Playing up? WTF is wrong with you?!

Sam has only shown that deafness is his excuse for not joining in most things. That is NOT a role model, it is defeatist and lazy. Deafness does not make anyone sleep constantly or be bone idle in my family. He managed to mix and stay awake when Jeremiah was fawning over him. Waste of a good opportunity to do something positive for the deaf community.
Absolutely he should not have to give it to charity because he is deaf. He should give it away becasue he was so pious and self-righteous about not being there for the money.

Double dare anybody to put earplugs in for a week and not tell people that you're struggling to hear them. Give him a break. He hasn't played up to it much at all.

Not when someone shoves it in your face as an excuse to win and says they will be taking advantage of it when they go in. So try again mate.

Theres disliking somebody because you think they're boring, unkind or malicious and theres disliking somebody out of spite because hes mentioned his disability. With posts like yours, I can't help but think you're part of the latter.
Maybe your imagination isn't great but being 80% deaf is a big deal and most people should understand this. His hearing is close to useless.

Think/perceive me all you want, I know who I am and the people I care about do too and that's all that matters. I'm sure a lot will agree with my post too, except those who are wearing rose tinted glasses.

Rose tinted? You've basically been saying that being 80% deaf isn't a big enough of a deal to talk about. You wouldn't last 20 minutes with earplugs in your ears without whining that you can barely hear people and nor would I. He is harder of hearing than that and he hardly mentions it all. To be honest your posts come across as cruel and inconsiderate.

Clearly you do not!!!
He wears hearing aids, which are probably digital. These are far better than the older analogue aids which just amplified sound.
With digital aids background noise is reduced considerably, but it is still a problem as they cannot cut it out completely. All hearing aids work best when a person is having a one-on-one conversation in a quiet area (they usually have a range of just over a metre - about 1.5 I think is the most). Being in a room with a lot of people all talking over everyone or even the wind will make conversations extremely difficult to hear and it will be exhausting.
Shouting will also hinder hearing aids mainly because peoples voices distort when they shout which makes it harder to hear words correctly and it can be painful to someone who wears the aids.
Even with the help of hearing aids, someone with Sam's loss of hearing will have a lot to contend with and there were very few HM's who actually took the time to consider this. I was not surprised at all that he felt isolated and upset that people did not consider this (Mrs Jackie Travis!) and just brushed him off.
You may not think so, but he has opened a door for many people who may feel like their hearing disability limits them to what they can do in life and for that he is a very worthy winner!

True dat. I used to work with someone who had a similar level of hearing loss. He used to be exhausted by the end of the day, it took so much concentration just to follow what was going on in an office environment.

Fantastic post.
The wearing of hearing aids does not mean somebody can miraculously hear at a normal level.
