tinsel was 12 weeks old on wed and weighed 12lb 4oz
she was off the lead for the 1st time on thurs on the field with a toy, had a little canter about tumbled a few times, then attacked peters laces, seemed to enjoy it.
threw a paddy yesterday @ me when I tried to put a coat on her I mean proper snarling and growling @ me then she got away from me, luckily it was in the garden.
today she saw a horse for the 1st time and decided to bark @ it lol

mizzy25
16-04-2014, 11:10 AM
the trendy jacket is one of my older dogs as tinsel already outgrew hers lol
ammi, yes she will definitely race, shes just 4 months old so its a bit soon yet as she has a fair bit of growing to do. What we will do will give her plenty of runs off the lead with a toy/ball etc, she loves this anyway. Then maybe in about 3 to 4 months when shes about 7 or 8 months (depending on the size of her and if she still has a lot of growing to do) she might get to give the rag a little chase, we start by going just about 20 to 30yards the rag moves and u let her go, the rag stops she gets to kill it, gradually u do further and further back until u r going to full distance. Which in the whippets is normally 150yards (there is longer races but 150 is the normal) Once she is going the full distance of 150yds in a straight line on grass chasing the rag (totally different to greyhound racing) and killing it. She will then go into the trap to do it, then get a muzzle on, then she will go in with one other dog probably which will pass her, then providing she runs straight and doesn't play, we will find an older slower dog which she will pass. We will do this a few times and she will be ready to race. Hope I haven't bored you all to tears? lol Il keep ypu posted.

..no that isn't boring at all, it's really interesting...so do you do all the training yourself Mizzy and what if she/a dog you trained didn't run straight, do you always get them to somehow or what if you don't feel they could be racing dogs..?..

Yes we do all the training ourselves @ the local track/club that I run anyway. I have had dogs that have played, we had a lad @ our track whose dog used to play all the time was really bad, theres a few things you can try, blinkers on the muzzle seems to work, food @ the end of the race or a toy if their good etc etc. Only ever saw one dog who we couldn't get it out of and it couldn't race, the lad found it a new home on a farm. Myself I always seem to manage to get it out of them somehow.

..I guess if it's how they've been bread and trained then the chances are that they are going to be racers for most of the time, like horses bread for racing as well..?...have you had any 'winning' dogs, Mizzy..?...

hi ammi yes I get a few wins now and then, theres open racing and whippet championships and theres club racing. I win quite a lot @ the club but theres not many dogs there maybe 10 @ the most. We also have the English derby which I won twice with one of my dogs and the Scottish derby which I won once with the same dog. theres all different weight classes he was a big lad wot u call a scratch dog he won that part. I just lost him in March he was 13 years old.

17-04-2014, 08:49 PM
thanks for saying there all gorgeus ammi I think so but im biased lol
weve been racing for about 20 years altogether but zak was the one who really got me into it.
Theres lots of different kinds of racing in whippets ammi. at the club that I run on a sun morning, all size dogs race together and it goes off a timed basis where the dogs get timed and the fastest dog gets scratch a slower one will get a yard or two etc its called time trial racing.
Then theres open racing which has many different formats but ol give u a typical one. ok there will be about 4 different weight groups these cud b up to 20lb up to 24lb up to 28lb and up to 32lb. dogs and bitches will race separately in their weight groups, Say the up to 20lb group has a 20lb dog, that will go off scratch and if theres a 17lb dog that will get 3 yards head start this is called yards for pound racing. Over the 32lb weight is what we call scratch racing say 36lb scratch 40lb scratch and no limit. So any dog between 33lb and 36lb will be in the 36lb scratch race off levels dogs & bitches all in together, then up to 40lb the same. Then for the much bigger dogs its called no limit, if they can fit in the traps ok they can race in this.
So the yard for pound racing your 4 diff weight classes whoever wins those will all race off against each other in the final with the yard for pound thing. Then the winner of the dogs and the winner of the bitches will race off against each other for supreme.
The scratch the winner of each class 36/40/no limit will race off levels against each other for supreme scratch.
Theres also puppy racing (up to 12 months)
yearling racing (up to 18 months)
veteran racing aged 5 and over if aged 6 the dog wud get an extra yard in the yard for pound racing.

tinsel is 20 weeks old today (not 5 months until 11th may though)
I saw Vinnie on sat and they gave him a chase behind the rag, I tried to tell them it was fat too soon, but the lady who runs that club said they cud, thankfully he just ran to the owner he didn't really chase the rag. one of the lads played war with the lady that runs the club though for allowing him to do it. I also run a racing club but we have a rule where they have to be @ least 6 months old before they can do any training @ all.
Anyway on Sat Vinnie weighed 24lbs
Tinsel today weighed just under 23lb she is a very happy dog, loves being outside and has settled into a good routine now.

tinsel is 21 weeks old today 5 months old on sun 11th, can u believe that already? Seems like shes been here forever now. She will be having her 1st camping trip end of may, the bank holiday weekend. Luckily its all whippet people. I cant see tinsel like being in a cage for a long time like the older ones. luckily ive got a puppy pen, so if the weather is good I will put that up and let her go in there for a bit. otherwise I guess it will b loads of walking lol

ages since ive updated this as it keeps freezing everytime I do. anyway il try now lol ok tinsel is very nearly 9 months old (11th sept) she weighs approx. 31lb maybe more il need to weigh her again, so she has went much bigger than we thought. she is stunning to look at and she knows it. she has started schooling to race. she had a couple of quarter way slips behind the rag, then a couple of half way slips, then a full way slip and she pulled up, so the following week she went out the traps 3/4 and didn't pull up so the following day she went all the way out of the traps with a muzzle on, sadly nobody timed her so today I will take my own stopwatch, I will poss try and get some new pics. her brother Vinnie the brindle lad weighs approx. 35lb and is also stunning, he too has gone all the way from the traps. her brother mac weighed about 30lb the other week but he was far too fat, he is schooling well but hasn't been out the traps just yet. tim is about 25lb and had to quarter slips behind the lure, he is however getting rehomed s roz is having personal problems and is having to move somewhere she cant have any animals. its ok though as I myself have personally rehomed him with a lady whose raced whippets for many many years and our 1st ever dog was out of her dog, so I will see him all the time and he will be raced with her. their racing names:
tinsel - whizzuma
Vinnie - blue mazzu
mac - McNamara
tim - not sure yet?

Hard to believe but tinsel was 10 months old last sat, she weighs 30/31lb has started her traininh. Went in with another dog for the 1st time 2 weeks ago the race itself was great with the other dog passing tinsel about half way and her running straight which is exactly what u want. However over the line @ the rag she collided with the other dog (her fault) she landed on her back, she was screaming, the other dog was screaming I thought she had broken her back. However it seemed she was just winded thank god. I did get her checked over though and she had a few niggles so has been off for 2 weeks. So this weekend she will have a solo run then poss a run with a dog. Il see. Tim has got a new home as the greyhound trainer was unable to keep him, it is a brilliant home I know the lady very well, Hes started schooling but hasn't been in with a dog yet. he weighs 24/25lb. Vinnie has been in with dogs and is doing well, he weighs 35/36lb and finally mac is also schooling and doing well. hes about 28/29lb. Cant wait till next year for them all to be racing in opens. race names:
tinsel = whizzuma
tim = jordy boy
mac - macnamara
Vinnie = blue mazzu

Well Tinsel has officially started her schooling ready to race, since the incident with her banging into a dog over the line we did get setback a little bit. She was kept off a few weeks then brought her back gave an older slower dog a start but tinsel didn't seem to know what to do she just cantered up the track behind it. So it was back to solo runs for a few weeks. I then put her in with my older slower one rio but again she wouldn't pass her and she cud have. So I know a lad whose got a pedigree whippet which are always slower than the none peds which is what tinsel is. So last sat she gave it 3yards start and past it no problem, same on sun she past it no problem, today she gave it 7 yards start and past it again. So not 100% sure what im doing tommoro whether to have her passing or have one pass her. Mac has had a dog pass him and hes past a dog and is doing that again tommoro. Vinnie has passed a dog but was leaning on, taking my mink to pass him next week. Tim went in with my rio last sun but she didn't catch him so doing it the other way round this week. They all doing canny and they are a good variety of weights Vinnie is 38lb tinsel is 32lb, mac I think is about 29lb and tim about 24lb. They soon be a year old 11th dec

well after schooling tinsel for a while, today she had her 1st proper big girl race, 1st off we went all the way to a place called maltby as they had an open race day on, so it was a 2 and half hour drive for us. tinsel ended up having a solo in her weight class so she went straight into the final where she was off scratch and she was giving dogs 1 yard, 5 yards and 7 yards start, the little bugger only came 2nd. delighted I am. the dog that beat her is about 17 months old and has been racing for ages, shes just turned a year old and has only been racing a few weeks.

Well I'm very sad to be typing this about my little bitch kez (Crackin Whizz) a while back she started to lose patches of fur and her back end began to go thin, so a few weeks ago I took her to the vets to be checked over, the usual tests all came back ok but a skin scraping said she had something called Demedex, which all dog have apparently, but it doesn't show unless there immune system is low if there elderly or they are pups. Anyway the vet did say to me we can treat the Demedex but there cud b an underlying cause, but to find out wot that was they wud have to take kez in and knock her out and do a load of tests, saying as she was nearly 10 I went for the treatment option 1st, so I got a course of anti- biotics as her mouth wasn't too good as well and drops for the skin. However since 3 weeks ago kez had deteriated a lot especially yesterday when I got her out the van for a wee, she cud barely walk and when peter looked @ her foot it was all red and swollen. This morning it was even more red and swollen and she couldn't put it down @ all and the other foot appeared to have sores on it, she didn't look right either her back end even thinner and her skin appeared pink but under her eyes there seemed to be little fur and they had gone black. so we made the heart breaking but neccesary descion to let her go to rainbow bridge. RIP Kez my little pet I'l miss u on the sofa xxxx

We have 4 vizslas.
One was imported from Austria, always better bitches from abroad.
She had a litter in 2009 and we kept one of the puppies.
In 2011 she had another litter (her last) and we kept 2 puppies
The puppy we kept from the first litter is having puppies now.
Good luck Mizzy :)

Well over the weekend I've been racing Tinsel at the whippet racing championships. she weighs approx. 34lb there was 7 dogs racing of this weight group. Theres only ever 5 dogs in a race, so there was a 4 dog race and 3 dog race, Tinsel was in the 3 dogs race..which she won! She then had to race against the dog that won the 1st race, she just missed out on being a champion but she is runner up so I'm very pleased with her progress. I will see if I can post some pics on here.
