One season ends and another one begins. At the very end of Sunday’s Survivor: Blood vs. Water finale/reunion show, fans got their first sneak peek at the next installment of the longtime reality hit. Premiering in February 2014, Survivor: Cagayan (which filmed last summer in the Philippines) will feature 18 new contestants divided into three tribes: one of brains, one of brawn, one of beauty.

The twist is reminiscent of season 11 of Big Brother, which aired in 2009 and started the season off with players grouped into one of four different cliques: popular, athletes, brainiacs and off-beats. We spoke with Survivor host Probst, who says the groupings here reflect “the different qualities that people bring to Survivor. Not saying these necessarily are the only three, but these are three very distinct type of people.” Probst adds that the most intriguing element of giving people such labels is seeing how they will react to those labels. “It’s really interesting how that label either works or doesn’t for each individual,” explains Probst. “And what happens to the group dynamic. The brawn tribe is more aggressive. And they’re more sports-like. And they end up using euphemisms for things like, “Listen, we’re gonna give it our best shot today!” And the brains tribe has this enormous pressure out of the gate that “If there is a puzzle, we have to win. And if we don’t win, we’re the losers because we’re supposed to be the smart ones.” And it was really interesting to watch the beautiful people talk about their beauty and how charm gets them through life, and watch it play out in alliances.”
“The premise we were going for was kind of layered,” Probst continues. “Is there one quality that is clearly more valuable in Survivor? And what happens when you tell somebody they’re in the smart tribe. Do they believe it? And it turns out the IQ in the brains tribe was significantly higher than the other two tribes. It’s very high. And they knew that. They assumed it, and the felt the pressure. You can see it.”
Seeing as how only two of the past eight seasons of Survivor have featured all new players, and the two that did (Nicaragua and One World) are generally considered to be among of the show’s weakest outings, it is somewhat surprising that there are no returning players this time around. However, Probst says that returning to the show’s roots with all new players is a direct result of fan feedback. “For season 28, we listened to our fans,” says the host. “That was really it. They’ve been saying over and over, ‘We love the returning players, but we’d like to see a cast of new players.’ And that’s why we did it. That doesn’t mean we will do it again anytime soon and it doesn’t mean that we won’t do it. Season 29 could be all new players as well. We’re going to see how it plays and make decisions based on that.”

Either way, Probst seems confident that the show can continue its recent hot streak (the past three seasons have all ranked in my top 10 all-time). “I am optimistic that this will be another very good season,” says the host. “A lot happens. I feel really good about it.”

On the first sight Brains and Beauty's tribes look to be the preferably choice in terms of finding favorites. Brawn at this stage... not so much.

My short perceptions with mildly outrageus assumptions of the players:

Brice - Clearly un-straight. Seems rather camp and might be over-the-top. Black/Afro Colton?

Sarah - Rather blandish at first sight. A little Dopey too. Doesn´t strike as a winner.

Spencer - Seems like a very intelligent and a bright yound lad. Ready to make moves and play the game. Likes blindsides. Strikes as a cutthroat player. Strategic threat, maybe?

Morgan - Sweety pie. Cutish but a little skankinsh. Flirty tactics is her receipt of success, that is my guess.

Garrett - Seems a little cocky and bit too sure for himself. Might be intelligent and crafty though, albeit overbearing at times. Or then again, a dud for the making. Strategic and physical threat? Meaning an all-around threat?

Alexis - Kind of cute and aware of things, but then again maybe not. Not sure about her. Possible first one out?

J´tia - Pretty, smart, social and strategic. Deadly combination. Likable? Not sure yet. Strategic threat #3.

Jeremiah - Seems like an all around southern country boy type hardworking and honest type, who values trust above all.

Lindsey - Social, very competetive and supposedly strategic. Boy-girlish and bit of a mean type personality. A wildcard, maybe?

LJ - Alfa malish. Might be and tribe leader and advisor type? Talk kind of slowish, which might indicate a bit of a laziness and sleeper type too, perhaps? Strong physical threat #2.

Woo - A bit of a goofy type i presume. A likable joker like Fabio, maybe? Might be funny and laughworthy.

Tony - A fast talker and very alfamale typish. A little bit of a meathead. Comes across as arrogant and loose cannon (exploding, frustrated and angry type). Physical Threat #3.

Jefra - Country girl. Seems pretty and all that, but somehow comes across as a follower, not a leader.

Tasha - Very excited person. Seems like the type of person that can be very argumentative and have lots of rows.

Trish - Gritty older woman type. Mommy of the group, maybe?
Seems bossy and temperament too.

Kass - Somewhat unreadable, which might mean that she is a good liar and possibly a little untrustworthy (Which most of them are, to be fair). A watcher and observer of people. First out or in for the long haul -type meaning if she survives a few votes, she might go a long way.

David - Seems somewhat focused and thrived guy who has a goal. Comes of as atleast moderately intellingent and strategic. Strategic threat #4

Cliff - Big guy. Comes accross as a likable good guy with strong morals, good heart and a level head. Physical threat #4.

Predictions:

I will pick Spencer, J´tia and Lindsey as the possible candidates for final three. Jefra or Alexis might squeeze in too to replace one of them, as the easiest to beat in the end. Kass might be a candidate too for the finals.

Either Spencer or J´tia for a win prediction.

Likable people and strong guys will go after the merge as before and a few strategic players will bite the dust also.

Alexis as the first one to go out.

Garrett for a "surprise" blinside of the season.

Tony or Tasha will have an somewhat explosive and angry selfdestructive breakdown resulting in a vote out.

Showmance between LJ and Morgan seems plausible. Maybe Jefra and Jeremiah. Not seeing any other clear possibilities.

Snake and sandfly-infested islands with back-stabbing people are no place for a princess.

That's what attracted Dr Ramona Salins to the American reality TV juggernaut Survivor.

She guided a team of medicos through the mud and mind games for 10 seasons.

Being no place for a princess was also the reason Dr Salins and her husband, Joe, left too, when their daughter Abbey-Rose, 2, grew into a pint-sized delight under an explosion of curls.

''Ever since having this little one, our life has had to calm down a bit,'' said Dr Salins, who has taken up as a part-time GP at Braidwood while the family takes a break from the rigours of reality TV. Dr Salins is determined to earn her stripes as a qualified rural GP and has chosen Braidwood, east of Canberra, because it is officially regarded as ''remote''.

The new doctor's arrival is a boon for the little community because it means there are now at least two GPs on any given day working out of the Braidwood Medical Centre. It's a perfect fit for Dr Salins because she can live and work part time at Braidwood and maintain a home and family in the Blue Mountains where her family is based.

Born in Penrith, Dr Salins had wanted to be a doctor since she was four. She's been an aid worker in Zimbabwe, Chile and the northern Himalayan mountains of India, accessible only by a three-day trek.

Survivor was the dream job for the 37-year-old with a thirst for adventure. ''The more you put yourself out there … the more things fall into your lap,'' Dr Salins said.

Her call came while working as a locum at Penrith. A friend said a team of doctors on Survivor was looking for another doctor. Six weeks later Dr Salins was in Fiji. Two seasons on, producers suggested she get a team of doctors together herself and take charge. She hand-picked them, looking for people like her.

''They can't be too prissy, they can't be people who just work in hospital environments, they have to be outdoorsy people and very flexible with hours.''

After 10 seasons handling emergencies, evacuating casualties, pulling head-strong injured contestants out of their million-dollar quest to win Survivor, she has stowed her satellite phone.

Months before challenges and tribal councils, Dr Salins would examine potential contestants in Los Angles, and again days before filming began. ''We check the girls aren't pregnant, that no one has an acute infection or injury that would deem them unable to compete.

''There are always some 'normal people'. There are a few extroverted, narcissist, argumentative people that they put in to fill those sort of roles and create havoc,'' Dr Salins said.

Psychologists remind contestants they are going to be watched by 20-million-plus people.

''You are being filmed 24 hours a day, so whatever you say and do, at the end of the day you have to be proud of, or live with, that you are going to see it back, your families are going to see it back, potential employees, so it's a big responsibility for the contestants.''

Dr Salins said host Jeff Probst was a charmer who showed no signs of wear and tear . ''You see how well he does at tribal council, that's not rehearsed, it's live. He's very good at getting contestants to say certain things, or probe them.''

Most of her work involved treating a crew of several hundred people who worked months ahead building sets. ''Last year we did six helicopter retrievals, plus a lot of road and boat retrievals,'' she said. ''I love emergency, that's my passion. But it's long hours and a lot of night shifts, so that's why I have decided to move to a GP.''

Wow, liked the premiere. Some interesting characters already. And the gameplay has fully begun, despite some talk about doing 'what the tribe wants'.

Jeff stirred things up well at the second tribal council, and we have players who put their foot in it, which always makes for good reality TV.

Only annoyance with Jeff was a silly comment (which he can be prone to make of course) after the first twist. He made it out that it was strange someone going after someone who had helped make them the leader of their tribe. As being made a leader puts a target on you his remark made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

When he reveals it next week [was in preview] she's just going to think he's shady and cannot be trusted. Don't really like Tony but he's coming out as a big character already and it's only 1 Week [2 eps] in.

Reason why I think he was promoted alot in the first two episodes is because based on the edit it looks like Tony or Trish will be targeted if Brawn lose and Tony will use the immunity idol to blindside Cliff out of the game due to Cliff being well liked. I hope this is what happens, I want more shock eliminations.

I like Tony so far (which I never thought I would), he seems to be strategic player when thinking of who to vote out, and if everyone likes Cliff no one is going to vote Cliff out making him threat further in the game. His downfall was not admitting he was a cop to Sarah; seemed she wanted to make an alliance with him and if he was truthful to her we could have seen a strong duo. Will have to see what happens next week when he admits to Sarah he is a cop also; she could want him gone even more for not being truthful, or she could push once again for an alliance with him. For some reason I think Tony and Sarah will become a strong duo in the game.
