Coronation Street: Les Dennis joins show as criminal Michael Rogers

Coronation Street bosses have announced that Les Dennis is joining the soap's cast.

The actor and comedian has signed up for the role of wayward character Michael Rogers, who is a petty criminal.

Show chiefs are keeping quiet about the full storyline details, but have confirmed that Michael will be caught up in the lives of one Weatherfield family after breaking into their home.

Speaking of his new role, Dennis commented: "I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. It has always been my favourite television programme, mixing high drama with some of the best comedy on screen.

"I've loved it since the beginning. I grew up watching all the amazing characters in the show. I now not only have the chance of meeting them, but also working with them. It doesn't get better than that."

Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn added: "Les is a fantastic performer and a real coup for Corrie. I can't wait for him to join the team."

Dennis will start filming at Coronation Street on Monday (January 27) and appear on screen from March.

The 60-year-old is best known for presenting gameshow Family Fortunes for 15 years, but has also worked on a number of theatre shows. He is currently touring in the Peter James play A Perfect Murder.

His previous soap projects have included roles in Brookside, Family Affairs and Crossroads.

How fitting because Les's signature impression used to be Mavis Riley from corrie.

Coronation Street: Gail McIntyre for romance with Les Dennis character?

Coronation Street's Gail McIntyre is being lined up as a love interest for Les Dennis's character, according to reports.

It was announced last month that the actor and comedian has signed up for the role of wayward character Michael Rogers, who is a petty criminal.

Michael will arrive in Weatherfield next month and burgle Gail's house, The Mirror reports.

However, Michael will then turn up again in the summer to try and make amends with Gail (Helen Worth) as part of a restorative justice storyline.

The restorative justice scheme involves people who have admitted crimes meeting their victims or making amends by doing some sort of remedial work.

Coronation Street debut for Les Dennis - first look spoiler pictures

Coronation Street bosses have released the first pictures of Les Dennis making his debut on the cobbles in the role of a petty criminal.

The actor joins the ITV soap next week as Michael Rodwell, an intruder who breaks into the Platt family's home and is disturbed by Kylie and Gail.

Michael initially appears on screen for two episodes which focus on the break-in and his subsequent getaway attempt.

The wayward character will then return on a more permanent basis from June, when Coronation Street kicks off a restorative justice storyline which will run across the summer.

As Gail is left deeply shaken by the incident at her home, she ends up meeting Michael again as part of the restorative justice process.

Against the odds, an unlikely friendship forms between the pair - much to the dismay of Gail's family.

Speaking of the upcoming storyline, Dennis explained: "Michael isn't a career burglar - he just thinks that the Platts' house is empty, so nobody will get hurt as they'll be insured. But it all goes wrong when Gail interrupts him and she's left quite frightened by the experience.

"Later on, Michael has the chance to apologise to Gail. After that, maybe the Platt family will be thinking that Gail has chosen badly again - even in the friendship stakes!"

The former Family Fortunes host filmed his first Coronation Street scenes in January and is now busy touring the UK in the Peter James play The Perfect Murder. He will return to filming at the Weatherfield soap in April.

Dennis's character was originally announced as Michael Rogers, but the surname was later changed to Rodwell.

Coronation Street airs Michael's dramatic debut on Monday, March 24 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
