View Full Version : Should religion be satirised?

Should we defend the right to make jokes about religion?
I am sure a stand-up today would happily do a Catholic joke but would not be so sure to mock Islam. Celebs would happily twitter something satirical about Christianity but again, not Islam or perhaps Scientology (in the USA)
How do you feel about this?

As i said I doubt there are many stand ups doing Islamic material.
Also if Life of Brian was brought out as new this year, how do you think it would be received?

The Islam issue is difficult. It's still a new religion that basically copies the religion that came before it, which in turn copied the religion that came before that.
Because of this, Islam isn't really comfortable with itself and it hasn't been forced to look at some of the more fundamental aspects of it's text, and it's still in a place where you can't even question one word of the Koran.
You also have the issue, that because Mohammed came along later and there are some accurate versions of his life (intertwined with lies and nonsense), it's even more difficult to encourage people to examine the texts in an academic fashion.
We just happen to live in a time where Islam has short man syndrome, like Christianity and Judaism have before. There are groups that are beginning to challenge these issues from within the religion, and that is a positive step forward. It doesn't matter what comedians do now, as it's irrelevant to Islam. I wouldn't risk my life to make jokes about a paedophile prophet who liked banging a 9yr old, but I'd make jokes about Moses ordering rape.
There shouldn't be a difference, but self preservation is golden.

Great post
I think it's important that programs like South Park make an effort to be equal opportunity offenders and make fun of everyone and everything; if you were to characterise Islam as a person it'd be that really angry small kid in class who goes around hollering at the top of its voice at the slightest bit of perceived criticism.

There should be no rules with comedy after all its just comedy.
all comedians do religious jokes some sneakier than others so they dont get into trouble
john bishop done one the other day about the headgear muslims wear, he said that joke wont be in the show when i get to birmingham
on a film last night guy says give ma blowjob. woman says no im jewish i dont eat pork

Its possible to offend people by using bad language, sex, violence, drug use etc but if you truly want to be hated by millions then take the p*ss out of religion. I find it amazing that people are so passionate - and even prepared to kill or die for their religion - few things stir up so much emotion. I think religion is fair game for satire but be warned you may end getting death threats if you do.

I agree with last poster, religion is fair game for comedy and it is still not illegal to use religion in a comedy act, but be careful which religions you pick on and how far you go as some of the newer religions do have a high proportion of followers that take exception to anything said in jest and they can be quite extreme in their desire for revenge...!!!

I personally find religion to be its own self-sustaining joke. No need for external satire, really.
Although I will point out that Christianity is not entirely fair game... Anyone remember Frankie Boyles channel 4 sketch show? His mission was to get it off air. a sketch featuring a time traveller posing as Jesus being desperately wanked off (as this was what activated the time travel) whilst on the cross was what did it in the end :joker:

I love the way we all talk about religion like it has some sort of sound rational logical basis...........it hasn't pure Bunkum, Hogwash. fantasy nonsense
Invented by man to try and pave the way into non existance with a glimmer of hope based on well ,actually......nothing !
Anyway I don't want this post to be a religion bashing thread as one's personal spiritual views are not the same as organised religion, but to go back to the point YES Religion should be satirised and pointed out at every opportunity how complete and utterly ridiculous it actually is:-
Cant eat Pork
Can't eat Shellfish
Can't eat Beef
Cant eat at all for one Month a year during daylight hours
Can't drink Alcohol during Lent
Can't drink Alcohol at all
Must Pray every day (ie Talk to a non existant being)
Must Pray 5 times a day
Cant show your Hair
Cant show your legs
Can't show anything - Just wear a small black tent
Must wear a Turban
Can't ever wash or cut your Hair - Rastafarians
This is only the beginning of a very long list, my hope is that future generations will look back in a thousand years time with a wistful smile at how oddly we used to act in the name of RELIGION....
Satirise it, Mock it ? Oh Yes............Mock the Hell at of it.. !!! Why wouldn't you...!!!!

no, the holocaust wasn't religion, it actually happened. wtf are you talking about? Jews were not given the option to renounce their god in the holocaust, that was racial, not religious. Many people were killed just for being related to "jews" even though they don't believe in the jewish religion, it had nothing to do with religion. Jews were seen as a RACE, not a religion in the holocaust.
many so-called jews converted to christianity when they escaped Europe during ww2, they didn't care about the religion. most ethnic jews don't actually believe in judaism. they were persecuted for their ethnicity, not their religion.
very few jews actually believe in judaism. Orthodox jews are every bit as evil as the nazi's though. Orthodox jews now want to murder muslims and gays, so they are no better than the nazi's, but like i said, inn the holocaust, people were being murdered for their ethnicity, not their religion.

It's not what you say that I find insulting sometimes because I've learned to make allowances for you... It's the fact that I think you really believe that you understand other people, their faith and how they feel so much more than you do.

The people who start the wars very often do so because of their ridiculous beliefs in imaginary gods/religions though so your point is pointless. Religion only exist within the minds of people.
Religion is outdated mumbo-jumbo that has long been debunked by anyone with any intelligence.
Anyone who believes something without being shown any evidence to prove its existence is just plain ignorant. It is our duty as an evolving species to question EVERYTHING! Anyone who doesn't will inevitably, at some point, be deceived or will end up making bad or foolish decisions.

The main issue is the difference between faith and religion. People of faith are happy to keep their beliefs personal and private, but it's religion that actually wants to inflict it's backward beliefs into the public sphere, with issues like terrorism, sex, and homophobia (as 3 examples). If religion came without the interference into normal life, then there wouldn't be the need for atheists to continually point out the insanity residing in books written by men that knew very little about the world they were describing.
But hey ho, atheists have had probably 50-100 years of publicly challenging Abrahamic faith, religion had over a thousand years of torturing and murdering people for even being suspected of doubt, but religious people now feel victimised and attacked for having their beliefs mocked.
Here's a tip, if people can actually mock the truths you hold most dear, on the basis of inconsistencies and magical thinking in your holy books, then re-examine your beliefs.

I think I take a fair amount of good-natured shtick on here about my faith. I am happy to laugh at myself and at my religion. I think that's what this thread was about. But it's never quite enough, is it. It has to develop into a general mocking of anyone's faith by those who have none, of being accused of being stupid and ignorant because I believe in something that someone else doesn't believe in.
My religion does recruit, I don't want to sign anyone up or turn them around to my way of thinking. I have no wish to disuade Atheists from their beliefs, and yet I am continually amazed at the lengths some unbelievers go to try to disuade me from mine.
Your last paragraph is typical of atheists. Why the hell should I re-examine my faith because I'm asked to by someone who doesn't understand what faith is?
Anyway... this thread, as usually happens with any thread to do with religion, has been taken over and turned into a faith-bashing instrument instead of the "should religion be satirised" dsiscussion it started out to be.

I don't understand what people attempted to inform us about so desperately 2000yrs ago, yet I don't feel the need to discredit their interpretations.

We've spoken before about the differences in Judaism compared with Christianity & Islam, and I thought my post gave a fairly concise and fair explanation of why atheists are forced into public discussions about such things at all. It's actually religion that forces this discussion, and not really atheists. Religion can't have it both ways, Liv. It can't take part in the business of politics, but at the same time expect tax exemption, and the reverence that religious institutions demand.
You're arguing against a lot of points that my post didn't even begin to try and make, and that I don't agree with either.
You shouldn't re-examine your faith because you're asked to, you should examine your faith because it's dear and important to you. What other areas of life do you leave things where they are to constantly remain unchallenged? I can't agree that having faith is in any way virtuous, or something that I can't understand/get to grips with, but I've said before that whatever gets people through the night.

No one on this forum is forcing the Atheists to steam in every time there's a religious discussion and take the piss. Now, I'm not necessarily aiming that at you, but you must know what I mean. The "religious people must all be stupid" comments are the ones that anger me most.
I never said having faith was virtuous. I think what I've always said is that it's my own thing, and I have no wish to get anyone else to join. I really, really don't care what other people believe, if they believe anything at all, and would be so happy if non-believers could extend to me the same courtesy. But look at you suggesting I should be re-examining my religion, like you might know what's best for me when it comes to my faith, while not feeling in anyway you should also be re-examining your own Atheism.
Get to grips with faith, or don't. My feelings about you will remain the same as they've always been. I can't prove what faith is to you. Same could be said about love, I guess.

Dont forget you are also an atheist in terms of the many thousands of gods that people believe in. You are just not an atheist when it comes to your own god.
Nah, I'm one of God's Chosen People.

Attacking people of faith and ripping the piss out of them isn't right in my book, but laying into religious scripture and institutions should not be off limits.

I've still never anyone give a good argument disputing the Omnipotence Paradox so these days I just see religion more about people than anything mystical. Basically like supporting a football team, they'll all have their own songs, rituals etc. And fans of football teams get taken the piss out of all the time so of course religion is fair game. It's the way it's drilled into people that religion is something sacred as a kid that makes some people twice.
