I'm familiar with smoking - some of my family members smoke (my dad used to as well) and quite a lot of my friends do it too.

In my case, I guess I'm 'I did, but not anymore' - I've tried smoking with friends, but it was my choice to stop doing it - it's not like there was any peer pressure involved or anything, because I don't stand for it.

It's basically all down to choice - I don't think it's disgusting, it's just something people choose to do and then it becomes a habit.

If I said I hated it, I'd be going against quite a lot of people I know, so I don't really have a problem with it!

Sorry in advance to people that smoke! But I have quite strong views on this subject!

I have to agree with Laura (Princess) on this one.

What is the point of smoking? To make you feel good about yourself? Living long enough to see my children grow up and enjoy their lives will make me feel good about myself!

Smoking is dirty, smelly and pointless. Why not just crouch down onto a road and eat some newly-laid tar? It'll be just about as good for you!

Perhaps my views come from the fact that whenever someone smoked near me when I was younger, I would get a nasty eye infection. I was once told that if I ever smoked, I could put serious strain on my internal organs, due to an otherwise un-noticed heart condition. I just don't see what people want to achieve by smoking, it's just an utter waste of good money.

I do realise that peer pressure plays a part in some people taking up smoking, but at the end of the day, it's your life, live it how you want to: just say no! Let's face it, if your "mates" force you to try a cigarette, and you don't want to, a true "mate" would respect that.

Ok, rant over! So, to summarise: No! Lool!

I personally dont understand smoking

Wasting money, killing yourself?
Isnt it eaiser just to spend your money on a big knife..?

well I think smoking is quite gross.
Don't know why people bother starting when

A) They know it won't make you look more mature (in the attitude sense).
B) It costs £1500 a year if you buy like 1 pack a day. Yes I know the adverts say this, but I actually calculated it too.
C) It stinks.
D) You die basically.

I know boys who smoke cos they think its cool. I know they in fact hate it cos they don't even inhale the smoke. They're just trying to "up" their status when in actual fact, it really doesnt!

I won't judge you any less apart from the fact you'll have minging teeth, smelly clothes and its your choice if you want a shorter lifespan ahead of you!

Exactly Ella, that's what I don't understand; people who do it CHOOSE to do it. I think we're the only two who don't have that much of a problem with it (even though I don't do it anymore).

What I dont understand is, people who smoke, then people ask them to stop etc, and they get stressy.

I know its your choice, but they are trying to help..

But its THERE choice, if they want to smoke let them smoke

I only started smoking after one of my good friends died, and im not using that as an excuse at all, but having a cig made me forget the pain for like 5 minutes

Hope I haven't p'd everyone off with my rant!! :blush2:

Loads of my mates smoke, and I respect them for who they are, it's just not my personal choice, I suppose!

Maybe my thoughts would be different if it wouldn't have such a profound effect on my health.

That's what I keep saying over and over, they CHOOSE do it lmao. I stopped, yeah, but loads of my friends still do it and obviously they know what they're going into, it's just their choice! Smoking has never been one of my 'rant' subjects (lmao not like a certain Ms Loos...)

While I don't see the point in people smoking I don't really care that they do, my dad's smoked for all my life and I've never really had a problem with it or told him to stop, it's his own personal choice and if he want's to mess with his health then so be it.

It's not like we're talking about MAJOR drugs or anything. AND
Millions of people smoke from their own choice.

So don't worry about it being touchy.

I know what it does to me... I'm an adult.... I read the news... but I cant stop just yet!

I will..... strangely I have the ability to stop if I put my mind to it..... but things are tough here so i wont.... ha ha ha ha ha! Sorry to all you non smokers but the smokers out there will know what I'm talking about!

I tried smoking a few years ago and hated it, nothing against people who do smoke though, quite a few of my friends do and they try to stop but where they have been addicted for so long they end up carrying on.

ACTUALLY GUYS HERE'S WHAT II HAVE TO SAY....

you're all going against smoking here. Myself included.

Why don't you think about the alcohol abuse etc that goes on amongst teenagers. It's not used socially and it's also a drug.

Cigarettes on the other hand can be enjoyed socially and don't affect your daily functions...

I bet there is not a single person here which doesn't drink or get drunk at parties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly Sully which is the thing that annoys me, alcohol can damage you aswell and those who say 'smoking is disgusting and can ruin your health' - i hope none of you drink either as that can ruin your health too and some think that is also disgusting. I hope we have no hypocrites on here.

It is all about choice and people say about you could die BUT also you could live a happy, healthy life. Why step foot out of the house, you could get hit by a bus.

Btw, i do smoke yeah and get annoyed by a lot of people's comments about it.

Also, people talk about passive smoking when in public places etc and complain or roll there eyes if you are smoking by them, do they not realise they are free to go right away from me? They moan about passive smoking but would rather stay there and carry on passive smoking whilst rolling there eyes rather than to stop passive smoking and fook off somewhere else. Why should we move just cause we have a cig in our hand?

Anyhow, rant over. :spin:

Bit hypocritical if thats the only reason you don't hate them.

Anyway, smokers have a choice. They're not imbociles and they're not smoking against their own will. Everything can damage your health - right now you're inhaling dangerous fumes. When you step out the house you could also come to as much harm.

Saying that; I don't smoke, never have.

I gave up smoking 4 days ago  it is hard going but after 20 years I decided now was the right time for me to stop.

There have been some wonderful comments on here about people stopping - I wish it was that easy. Nicotene is one of the most addictive drugs in the world so it is no easy task to just give up. I am wearing patches and using an inhalator but it is still hard going.

You have to be really ready to stop to succeed - I am using every support available including smoking cessation group and family support and encouragment. That said who knows what tomorrow will bring so I am taking it one day at a time as a current non smoker!!

Ooo I really don't mind never smoked and I don't intend to (cos I'm scared of fire and I don't want stinky breath!) but if anyone here smokes that's their choice it must be really horrible to be addicted and it isn't really right to talk about it cos people might be upset

I became asthmatic when I was a little baby because of a woman who was sitting next to my mum on the ferry from France to England. She smoked the entire time, the ferry was packed and my mum was exhausted. So I just breathed in all this smoke into my lungs, and apparently this triggered my asthma. So, in effect, passive smoking gave me asthma. Which is why I am so deeply against smoking. Whenever I walk past someone smoking in the street, I hold my breath and count to five after I've walked past them. Then I breathe again. I really hate it, I do not understand what the attraction is. People KNOW what it does to you. Anyone pleading ignorance is lying. We've all seen the TV campaigns, and we all know about the lung cancer. And yes, I know it's addictive, but why bother in the first place? It's expensive, deadly and the withdrawal symptoms are terrible!
