View Full Version : Do you like today's music?
Do you enjoy listening to modern music? or is there anyone here that prefers older music?
I tend to dislike most of the stuff that gets released these days, don't get me wrong there is songs that I like and I wouldn't deny that there is some really good artists out there with amazing talents releasing stuff so it's not really me just being 'stuck in my ways' or anything like that, I just think older music is so much better to listen to than what we have now, there's more meaning behind the lyrics and it's not as repetitive.

Of course there is which is what I basically pointed out in my OP but I think the quality of music was a lot better in the past with more thought going it, more actual musicians too IMO.

Pretty much only listen to modern music (last 10 years)
Can't really make sweeping statements about either old or new when there's literally millions of different artists out there.

If anything the availability of the internet and online music software means there're more talented musicians putting out music than there used to be, because you used to have to secure a record deal before you could put the talent out there.

The only thing I would say is that popular music was appreciated more then for the actual musicality rather than the shagability of who was singing or playing.
And in the charts there was something for everyone, and different tastes were catered for and not ridiculed.

Yep I agree with that, it seems image has now overtaken any musical talents.

The answer is both yes and no really, i was thinking the other day i cant remember the last time i heard a great chart song. i mean great lol
The top 40 is worst every year. they no longer make commercial songs to be classics but make them to be seen an for the cash. thats why the quality is so low. i
you got to hunt for the great music. There's still tons out there. the main problem is its not heard enough. the radio want to play some twat who cant sing who looks pretty and had his song written by some producer that sounds like a everything else. they wont play the good stuff on main playlists or rarely.
When i was kid i listened to top 40 but i also i went out and sought out at first all the acts bands anyone i heard about alive or dead that was regarded as good, then decided what i liked. sadly people dont do that. some kids think this is all there is what they hear on radio 1 and what their friends play. so tragic .
I believe music is the same. there's still quality to match older songs. but its just they wont be heard all the time like they would of been as its more of a business now than a art.
Natalie.

I do like modern music, a mixture of well known artists and indie stuff fills my ipod.
But I rarely feel uptodate with charts, sometimes I don't know who is number 1 or doing well in them. I guess it doesn't bother me what other people like or don't like.

Watching TOTP 1979 as I did last night I realised that there was an awful lot of sh1t back then too amid some classics
I will vote no because in general I don't like the direction of music in the charts.
Can say though I am a huge fan of material in the last few years from artists like Haim, Florence and the Machine, Empire of the Sun, Kasabian, Crystal Fighters and less commercial artists like Chromeo, the presets, Midnight Juggernauts and Anjunabeats.
My era would be the 80's, everything would just have clicked for me in that decade I just know it. But alas I was born on 89 and missed it all.
Still at least it's not like I like Meatloaf or anything :hehe:

No, there is more poor music now. 99% now is crap. It's hilarious hearing youngsters saying "..that Will. I.Am/Miley tune is amazing". Bless.
But then again the fact that lyrics now are so poor, and inane and music in general now is so dumb is a reflection that GCSEs and current exams are easier and dumbed down than 20 years ago. #lowerexpectations.
But if you grow up with sh*te like Flo Rida, Pitbull, 1D, Guetta, Neon Jungle you won't know any better and will think it's OK.

In terms of 'mainstream' though, there isn't a lot I can stand.
Not really, don't follow the charts much any more and if I do I tend to not like most of it and I hate most of the music that gets played on like Radio 1 or Kiss. Prefer Radio 2 for playing better new music

Yes I stopped R1 the day Moyles left. I have radio 2 on or perhaps Smooth for some old school classics.

Yes, people tend to categorise what is played on the radio as current music, but that is only the current music for a select audience.
The current music of today can be equally as good as music way back when, you just need to know where to find it (not be lazy and let the radio do it for you).
Given I love 90's music, but I put that down to that era being my teenage years and I associate a lot of fond memories with a lot of music, but still I can;t really say it was better, the 90's gave us some bloody awful music too.
Also, why do people follow chart music unless they are a teenager? That is what the market is aimed at (with the occasional spur towards another market every so often). People need to widen their music awareness, switch off the radio (especially radio 1) and discover a whole world of great modern music that is out there.

I like all kinds of stuff, contemporary stuff, old stuff... It makes me laugh when someone says they're really into music and then claim something is "before their time".
I'm not keen at all on most pop songs. I'd rarely listen to anything on the top 40/'mainstream' because I find them boring/overplayed. I listen to radio 1 a lot though so end up listening to so many pop songs.
But I love music, listen to about 5-10 hours worth every day. I tend to like more indie style music, such as Dan Croll, Vance Joy (Cannot wait for his album ahh), Arctic Monkeys, Vampire weekend, Foals, etc. Which I suppose is 'todays music'.

That's sorta the point of radio though surely, my only responsibility is to choose the station which should cater best to my taste. I generally don't really care enough about music to be too active in my search for stuff I like, I'd rather just switch the radio on and have a listen to whatever's playing.
And I mentioned chart music and radio 1 because its representative of the most popular music at any moment, even if the audience is mainly teenagers.

I never understand this. Why limit yourself?
Hmm, I think yes, I do. I would say firstly and foremostly I'm a fan of pop music; yet I don't find myself checking out the BBC Top 40 very often or using the iTunes charts to find new stuff, I think I just kind of pick up music through recommendations and random discoveries or even posts here on TiBB. I like a mixture of music from now and from the past, I think really you just need to know where to look. The thing about the past is that we have the benefit of hindsight - we can drop all the crap from our collective public conscience and just hold up the good stuff and it seems like the past is better. I'd bet any money that the Adeles, Kasabians, The Killers, Beyoncés of this world will be heralded just as The Beatles, The Supremes, Elton John and Madonna are now - but we try and gloss over eras like big haired glam rock with sub standard one hit wonder bands from the 80s because that kind of stuff was very of its time. There have always been trend setters and trend followers.
Basically I think there IS good music nowadays, it's just that unfortunately the outlets that are responsible for delivering music to the masses aren't necessarily interested in playing meaningful music; trap/dubstep influenced dance tracks are what's considered cool right now.

You still can get that, it just doesn't have the image to be media friendly nowadays.
Take somebody like Jake Bugg for instance, a young lad writing, performing and playing the music himself. he's far more important to the evolution of music then Harry Styles is, but you wouldn't think it.

The teen pop fluff of the early noughties was also a crap time for chart hits... always been swings and roundabouts with it.

Don't listen to radio 1 however I do listen to marvin humes on capital week nights. I love most of the stuff he plays and yes its chart stuff. What gets on my nerves is when people harp on about the beatles etc. I personally DO NOT LIKE the beatles, there ive said it. They were over 40 years ago for gods sake, yet people still harp on and on.

Not sure what the OP is asking. There has been poor music in every era and boy bands in every era. People forget the Beatles were a boy band in their very early years. I dont think there are more or less boy bands than in previous eras and I dont think they are better or worse than in other eras.
I think there are fewer successful artists who make and write their own music but then there have always been those artists who don't write their own stuff too. Elvis didnt write not one of his hits.
As I Say not sure what the OP is saying.

when will the 60's?
..I think the thing about music is that it evokes feelings/memories/moments/nostalgia etc so it's easy to think that the music of 'your era/youth' was the best because I also think that when your younger, it's the time when music can mean the most to you/when you're experiencing some things for the first time and quite emotional things...anyway, some of what is seen as great music now, wasn't always seen that way 'back in the day'...I think the fact that there is probably lots of/more bad music now is just that there is so much more music out there really/ so it's good because to me it means there is also lots of and more good music out there as well...

I like all types of music except for rap, I am not keen on that, some of it but not much.
As someone said above, there has been good music in all eras and bad too.
I personally get a bit fed up of so many 'guest' appearances on releases in the present time,so many releases are this one featuring this singer or a combination of different artistes on the same single release.
However to answer the question simple, yes I like today's music but I prefer the much older, meaningful and singalong stuff of the 1960's.
It has taken me ages to acquire loads of cd's from that era and I never tire of playing it.

That's not to say I don't like music from this era.

Not sure how to answer this. In terms of the chart stuff, the trash these days has nothing on what was popular in the 70s/80s for example. But in terms of stuff that's not popular or overexposed, there's just as much good music being released now as there ever has been, so I'll vote yes. The good stuff is there if you look for it, but music today gets an unfairly bad reputation, mainly due to the likes of Pitbull and his many crimes.

Same. :)
Warning : I'm totally going to parody myself here and give a very general argument on a very general section of music. Just to ward off the inevitable "but you can look someone better up".
It's obvious great music is always being made and that it is easier than ever to find it. So I always take questions like this to mean what do you think of the current zeitgeist or, say, representation of itself the music industry gives in which case no I generally don't like 'current' music.
I don't buy into the idea either that the charts in years gone by were some golden force benchmark for quality. They've always been filled with rubbish but great, unexpected stuff always broke in to them. Now it's generally wall to wall hip-hop/EDM/folk United Genres Of Benetton that is filling up charts, clubs, TV shows and radio stations. That's 'the' sound today. Whatever that means.
Odd smattering of blippy bloppy oddities fronted by cute girls for those of the year round festival mentality where people who stroke goatees can rub shoulders with platinum blondes because this is trending music and we're all in this together, a reminder every now and then from tragically reductive guitar noise acts like Arctic Monkeys to let us know rock aint dead, and that's basically it.
Then of course the aesthetic the industry wraps itself up in is at it's lowest point ever. The romanticism of music as material produce is all but dead and say what you want about the easier access afforded by the internet - never something I would trade - but that is a slight shame.
It's also caused us all to consume music differently. Think about it. A kid who buys a record in the 1980s goes back to his room, gathers some friends and they listen to the thing. They might talk about it afterwards. Nowadays more and more people digest music as a kind of utility. The Killers are nice but they're just nice really. And you know deep down inside they're really not that good.
Does anybody listen to a ****ing Killers album? Who cares? They're not that good. They're for putting on your iPOD when you want to go for a jog, or to get a party started. You wouldn't spend your whole night with Brandon Flowers. He's a fifteen minute man.
So I prefer the way it was before. In general. I can look up what I want now but I definitely much preferred what I passively heard around me in years gone by. I know that for sure.
