Default Do you like today's music?

Do you enjoy listening to modern music? or is there anyone here that prefers older music?

I tend to dislike most of the stuff that gets released these days, don't get me wrong there is songs that I like and I wouldn't deny that there is some really good artists out there with amazing talents releasing stuff so it's not really me just being 'stuck in my ways' or anything like that, I just think older music is so much better to listen to than what we have now, there's more meaning behind the lyrics and it's not as repetitive.

Yes. There's good and bad music in every era, you just have to find the good stuff.

Pretty much only listen to modern music (last 10 years)

Can't really make sweeping statements about either old or new when there's literally millions of different artists out there.

If anything the availability of the internet and online music software means there're more talented musicians putting out music than there used to be, because you used to have to secure a record deal before you could put the talent out there.

The only thing I would say is that popular music was appreciated more then for the actual musicality rather than the shagability of who was singing or playing.
And in the charts there was something for everyone, and different tastes were catered for and not ridiculed.

Yep I agree with that, it seems image has now overtaken any musical talents.

To answer the question...yes, but then I'd say my musical tastes are quite varied and span a few decades anyway.

The answer is both yes and no really, i was thinking the other day i cant remember the last time i heard a great chart song. i mean great lol

The top 40 is worst every year. they no longer make commercial songs to be classics but make them to be seen an for the cash. thats why the quality is so low. i

you got to hunt for the great music. There's still tons out there. the main problem is its not heard enough. the radio want to play some twat who cant sing who looks pretty and had his song written by some producer that sounds like a everything else. they wont play the good stuff on main playlists or rarely.

When i was kid i listened to top 40 but i also i went out and sought out at first all the acts bands anyone i heard about alive or dead that was regarded as good, then decided what i liked. sadly people dont do that. some kids think this is all there is what they hear on radio 1 and what their friends play. so tragic .

I believe music is the same. there's still quality to match older songs. but its just they wont be heard all the time like they would of been as its more of a business now than a art.

I do like modern music, a mixture of well known artists and indie stuff fills my ipod.

But I rarely feel uptodate with charts, sometimes I don't know who is number 1 or doing well in them. I guess it doesn't bother me what other people like or don't like.

Watching TOTP 1979 as I did last night I realised that there was an awful lot of sh1t back then too amid some classics

I will vote no because in general I don't like the direction of music in the charts.

Can say though I am a huge fan of material in the last few years from artists like Haim, Florence and the Machine, Empire of the Sun, Kasabian, Crystal Fighters and less commercial artists like Chromeo, the presets, Midnight Juggernauts and Anjunabeats.

My era would be the 80's, everything would just have clicked for me in that decade I just know it. But alas I was born on 89 and missed it all.

Still at least it's not like I like Meatloaf or anything

No, there is more poor music now. 99% now is crap. It's hilarious hearing youngsters saying "..that Will. I.Am/Miley tune is amazing". Bless.

But then again the fact that lyrics now are so poor, and inane and music in general now is so dumb is a reflection that GCSEs and current exams are easier and dumbed down than 20 years ago. #lowerexpectations.

But if you grow up with sh*te like Flo Rida, Pitbull, 1D, Guetta, Neon Jungle you won't know any better and will think it's OK.

Later that day, Josy spun some platters and got her groove on. When she had finished she cracked on with her tapestry.

In terms of 'mainstream' though, there isn't a lot I can stand.

Not really, don't follow the charts much any more and if I do I tend to not like most of it and I hate most of the music that gets played on like Radio 1 or Kiss. Prefer Radio 2 for playing better new music

Yes I stopped R1 the day Moyles left. I have radio 2 on or perhaps Smooth for some old school classics.

Radio 2 five live and talksport is the ticket

Yes, people tend to categorise what is played on the radio as current music, but that is only the current music for a select audience.

The current music of today can be equally as good as music way back when, you just need to know where to find it (not be lazy and let the radio do it for you).

Given I love 90's music, but I put that down to that era being my teenage years and I associate a lot of fond memories with a lot of music, but still I can;t really say it was better, the 90's gave us some bloody awful music too.

Also, why do people follow chart music unless they are a teenager? That is what the market is aimed at (with the occasional spur towards another market every so often). People need to widen their music awareness, switch off the radio (especially radio 1) and discover a whole world of great modern music that is out there.
