I don't think it would. United had 5 CB's before when we had Rio, Vidic, Jones, Smalling and Evans.

Jones can play as RB or CM too and Smalling is played at RB, but both should never be played at RB.

Rodgers is opting to try build a top 4 side rather than a title contender I think. He knows ddep down it won't happen. Going for squad depth over true squad quality. It could work, but may well backfire heavily and they are back where they were before that great season last time out.

Cleverly will be liked by Van Gaal I think. He is probably the midfielder we have( Herrera not included) that will adapt quickest to his system. He does release the ball quickly and generally keeps it. Van Gaal plays 3 mids usually too, which is what he needs. Now if I his confidence can be improved he could start to play more forward passes. He's not horrific..


It's not like he didn't keep Yaya Toure in check mostly at the Etihad and owned Wilshere at Old trafford a couple seasons ago. Potential is there it's just his confidence is an all time low.
