View Full Version : Flamoboyant gay guys on Channel 5

Looking at the odds and seeing that Mark is a dead cert to go this Friday, I can't help but think there's a trend here with the flamboyant Channel 5 males. Namely, Tom (BB12), Scott (BB13) and Mark (BB15). None in BB14 of course since it was such a killer series. But seriously, why is it that the flamboyant gay guy is evicted in the week before the final every time? And the storyline is usually quite similar too. People want them out for a while but they never end up facing the public vote. I honestly think it goes to show that the public are tired of this type of character. I just wish Channel 5 would grow some balls and stop stereotyping gay people into one small, small bracket.

I don't think any of them had the storyline you've suggested at all tbh.

Yeah, yeah I just meant it was nice to see the stereotype put to rest for a series. Even though Jack was a little camp. he wasn't over-the-top like Mark or Tom. Didn't mean it in a homophobic way clearly

Don't respect people who make their sexuality into their personality, makes them look like they have no individuality or idenity.

I agree, they make the public believe that all gays behave the same which just furthers stereotyping.

Dan was gay and camp and he was evicted just a few weeks before the final. People seem to forget he was camp just because he had big muscles and was a police officer etc

Oh yeah you're right! But I feel like Dan did have more to his personality such as his argumentative streak and his need to solve everything. Not to mention the fact that he had a son too, which actually did the opposite, I feel, and didn't reinforce stereotypes

Another trend with flamboyant gay guys: you automatically hating all of them.

Shocking, considering that they're not really that flamboyant (I would describe them as plenty of other traits before referring to either of them as flamboyant.) You've had it out for Mark since the start and then BBCan gets someone like Kenny, who is whiny and lacks any sort of charisma, and he becomes an instant favorite of yours because he "isn't flamboyant" (read: literally acted straight because apparently homosexuality is a handicap on a show that's iconic HM is a flamboyant gay guy who goes by Gary Glitter.)

I agree that the casting for gay guys on C5 has become basic. Gay guys are token mascots on C5, whereas on C4 there have been gay HMs whose sexuality (not sexual orientation) is an important aspect of their personality. Mark firmly fits into the same category as Tom and Scott did (and I do think he intended to play that role), but he's proven himself otherwise. It's pretty much an unwritten rule that the token gay HM doesn't get into a showmance, but then the Christopher thing happened and it was actually refreshing at first. So many straight dudes go into BB feeling as if they're entitled to a showmance (Luke Scrase, Ziggy, Liam, John James, any cast of BBUS)because that's what the experience is supposed to be like, apparently. Whether it works out or not, they'll have a clueless chick latched to them to help pass the time. That same sense of entitlement doesn't happen at all with gay people on reality TV and there's no way Mark expected to have any sort of romantic feelings for someone in there so it was at least refreshing at first (and almost certainly caused his demise.)

However, once the Mark/Christopher thing developed further it became pretty awful. They're extremely static and every episode is more or less the same thing and I'm sick of it. However, I can't deny how refreshing it was at the start. I got way too off topic but I'll bring it all together with this - yes, gay HMs have been especially pigeonholed into desexualized filler and it sucks. However, using flamboyance as a sliding scale to judge every gay contestant isn't any better.

If stereotypical gay guys in BB annoy you, stay away from BB Canada Season 1:

Mark >>> repulsive, disgusting cretins who play it straight in order to further themselves in a competition because they feel like liking cock jeopardises their gameplay.

And for years BB has had the stigma of casting gay males who are camp and flamboyant, long before C5 has had it.

I don't dispute that if observing the show at surface level you would see there as being such a trend but I think you're viewpoint on it has come across very narrow. I think the only reason these characters are evicted before the finale is because they all had a similar position in the house of being liked enough by their fellow housemates to avoid nominations for most of the show and only being nominated/evicted due to dwindling numbers and not having a divisive presence. I don't think their sexuality or level of flamboyance has anything to do with this trend itself like you appear to be suggesting.

It sounds like you're using the word 'flamboyant' when you really mean 'effeminate'. There's a difference. Tom and Scott were not really not flamboyant in my eyes.

I wouldnt describe Tom as 'flamoboyant' he was just camp but no where near the likes of Mark? Also if I recall correctly Tom and Scott were generally quite liked who just happened to be evicted because of being slightly 'background' characters like BB15 Chris.
