It's not the point Liam, why use his nationality infront of the insulting word? It's like calling someone a black **** or an Indian ****, neither of those would be acceptable either. I don't like Marc or Harry but that's offensive

I get that using someone's nationality as an insult is unacceptable, but in these situations, I personally don't see how calling him Irish is the offensive part, when the offensive (and rightly deserved part) was the '****'

I mean, i wouldn't get offended if someone called me a Welsh wanker, so maybe I'm just seeing it from my own personal prospective idk

Why not just call him a **** then? What was the purpose of prefixing it with where he comes from if not to try and use that as an insult against him, it makes the sentence sound like she's using that as an extra insult. If someone called a person a black **** on BB, would that be offensive do you think, even if he was actually a black person?

Because it's relevant to the discussion I was having. Liam said "but he is Irish and he is a ****" and I said "so if he was black and he was a **** it would be ok to call him a black ****?" You don't see how that's an ok comparison?

Liam-
09-06-2015, 03:56 PM
I personally find that when using someone's nationally in an insult like Harry used, i think it only becomes used as an offensive thing when the offensive word used, directly correlates to the person's nationality, if that makes sense?

Like, 'Irish ****' or like i said 'Welsh wanker' to me, that doesn't use a person's nationality as the prevalent insult, whereas if someone said 'Irish *something about potatoes*' or 'Welsh *something about sheep shagging*' that would be directly using someone's nationality as an insult to them.

It's still silly to place a person's nationality in that sort of context though, but I can't back that as being directly xenophobic.

Idek if any of that made sense but hohum.

Well, I remember being called a stupid ****ing Irish bitch by someone when i lived in London years ago and I can tell you the part that offended me so much was that the word Irish had been thrown in amongst the insults. I really felt like the person who said it was trying to belittle me because not only was I stupid and a bitch but I was Irish which was less then them, that's what it felt like to me

Urban meaning of a knacker .......... knacker
Incestuous, boxing, sovereign ring wearing, tracksuited shaven headed scumbags. Girls wear bellytops (Even if they're 15 stone), guys are small, jewelry and violence are rampant. Enjoy having children with sisters, looking at you with squinty eyes and scaring people. In many places refers to SCUMBAGS in general, and good travellers are not covered by the word - depening where you're from.

From that description it sounds like Marc's a knacker.

It's like projection, he attacks someone for something that he is.

He may be foul mouthed and insulting, but you can't call Marc a bully.

He's the most obvious bully I've seen in years on the show. Making insulting remarks to people continuously is bullying. Being aggressive towards people is a form of bullying. He has been warned countless times for doing this, and despite his half hearted apologies he goes right back to doing it.

It would be bullying if Harry were scared of him, but she isn't. She provokes as many arguements as he does. In fact they are as bad as each other.

No she doesn't. The man started an argument within 5 minutes of entering the house telling a girl she was going for an STI test. He has done this every other day and the housemates essentially have to put up with that behaviour until BB actually calls him in, which they have done time and time again only for him to come straight back out an be an arsehole all over again. Much to the amusement of people here.

I disliked Harry since she entered. And no I don't support him no matter what.

So Harry should put up with living with a man who makes the crudest and most sexist remarks because you don't like her. Okay.

Can you stop discussing other members please. Thanks.

How can you not discuss other members when you're debating with them?

He's the most obvious bully I've seen in years on the show. Making insulting remarks to people continuously is bullying. Being aggressive towards people is a form of bullying. He has been warned countless times for doing this, and despite his half hearted apologies he goes right back to doing it.

He ASKED Chloe ,he didn't TELL her, get it right

We'll see about that...

How can you not discuss other members when you're debating with them?

Debate the topic, not other members. The rule is pretty straightforward but if youre having trouble with it then pm a mod or admin about it instead of bringing it up on the threads.

He may be foul mouthed and insulting, but you can't call Marc a bully. It would be bullying if Harry were scared of him, but she isn't. She provokes as many arguements as he does. In fact they are as bad as each other.
Wait so bullying is only bullying if the person speaks up and says they're physically frightened?

Didn't Marc call Harry a Knacker yesterday? Apparently that is a derogatory term for a traveller, which is also "out of order"

I think that depends. Here, knacker just means...idiot

Anyway, given the insults these hurl at EACH OTHER 9its not one sided..both have said they hate the other...) this is rather mild. However, I get why using 'Irish' as an insult is more insulting than just saying *******. If that makes sense...

(Just read a bit further and seen the actual definitions for knacker. Well...seems we are strange here  That said, cracker also means idiot here...)

yeah i get where you are coming from but when people say things like 'why is that allowed and not this' it just makes it seem like they are annoyed at not being able to say black **** lmao

I have no desire to be racist/xenophobic/prejudice and simply request the same in return. If you are giving someone a tirade of abuse and use their ethnicity or nationality as a part of the put down then it will be offensive. I'm Irish, I found it offensive. I didn't speak up when I saw the video earlier because people rarely take such prejudice about the Irish seriously but if you use a person's cultural identity to augment an insult you are insulting their cultural identity.

It wasn't. She has said nothing about the Irish nor implied she doesn't like the Irish. Just that she thinks he is disgusting. Which he is. But carry on defending the bully of the house and attacking the girl who won't put up with his behaviour and defends herself against his attacks.

And I'll be sure to remind you all every time you ever post threads on sexism.

This thread isn't about defending Marc. It's not even about Mark. It's about what Harry said and what Harry said is not ok.

i've been called a scottish **** many a time, also a ginger **** and its never bothered me. Not so long ago people were supporting the right of Ms Hopkins to say what she liked, as she was "just telling it to peoples faces". Harry is a good house mate, much better value than 80% of the other in the house. I haven't made my mind up about her yet, but I'm glad she is keeping Marc in his place

Chuff, and those concerned for Marc, where were you when Adjoa and blacks get abused. As a black women who gets labelled playing the race card when i highlight anti black comments here, can no longer muster up any sympathy. Meh, don't give a sh%te. Love Harry

You missed the task then? Where she made her feelings very clear, knowing Mark would hear.

He then threw his toys out of the pram because he didn't like what she had to say.

It would be xenophobic though imo why bring where he comes from into it? Would it be ok to call Sam an Asian ****? it's the same difference

When folk have reached the limits of their intellect, they tend to let their true sentiments into the light of day in the form of spontaneous utterances....and I still haven't seen that bit of VT. Must root it out imediately...Harry could be about to lose a fan here. Dayum.

I think it's a context thing, He is Irish that's a fact, she's not using the fact he's Irish in any derogatory sense therefore I don't see it as an issue.

I don't like any of it to be honest, but I do thnk it is even worse when you use their nationality as a slur.

What a load of utter rubbish ,I have a gypsy brother in law

And what exactly makes that ridiculous by you having a gypsy Bro in law? It's a fact, Knacker is a derogatory description for a gypsy in Ireland...You n yours are probably more familiar with the term Pikey...Do you and or himself like / mind being called that? Not that anyone one would dare use either words to a Travellers mein unless the numbers favoured the insulter as is witnessed at national front, ukip marches

That's actually exactly what that sentence structure implies. We're talking the basics of the english language here.
