Scream
10/10
This is my favourite movie ever? I'm not particularly big with movies and haven't seen that many but this is definitely my favourite one. From the (literally) iconic first scene to the genuinely shocking killer reveal and the action scenes tat follow, as well as all the suspense and death scenes in between (Tatum's death in particular stands out) it's just brilliant. I also adore the character of Billy and find him highly complex, which is nice as most films just have one dimensional villains that don't endear, something I find Billy to be. He's also hot.

Scream
8/10
Scream's obviously a classic, and for good reason. It rejuvenated the slasher genre and continues to inspire and influence horror to this day. On top of that, it combined the horror with elements of dark comedy much more effectively than others have managed to.
Another of it's most iconic elements is how self-referential it is. I love me some meta, and it's great to have the characters reference tropes that they themselves are (in some cases unknowingly) currently living through.
The closing moments of the first scene remains one of my favourite scenes from a horror movie, the haunting score playing over Casey Becker's final moments really strikes a chord.
As for the killer reveals, on one hand it slightly bothers me that the killers were two of the people heavily telegraphed as strong possibilities throughout the movie (as a big whodunit fan I always prefer a more shocking reveal, for someone believed to be one of the more benevolent characters to suddenly reveal their true colours), but on the other hand I think the double bluff works because it gets you to think "Well it can't be Billy since they're making it so obvious".
In a nutshell, I think Scream is a movie that can appeal to a wide-range of movie fans. It has the kills to satisfy the slasher fans, an engrossing mystery element for the whodunit lovers, and just a heap of scares, laughs and thrills to keep almost anyone entertained throughout.

Friday The 13th
A classic slasher about a mother who can't let the past go. Story follows Annie, the only likable character as she takes a trip to Camp Blood, aka, Camp Crystal Lake for her cook job. Within her journey she gets warning signs from locals to "turn back now." Being a horror film the cheerful one ignores them and hitches her way there. The silent driver gets out of hand and the adorable teenager is murdered. Sigh.
Cut to the rest of the camp counselors. You got your slut, jock, joker, creep, and girl trying to be innocent but she slept with the boss. One by one they become fish food, dying from brutal deaths. But Kevin Bacon's death tho >>>. Alice being the only one kickin' runs into Pamela. "An old friend of the Christies" the owners of the camp. She soon reveals her eye sore son Jason had drown here, thanks to counselors who didn't pay attention. In her power she's taking revenge and offing everyone involve in the reopening of Camp Crystal Lake.
A game of hide and seek begins but of course Alice runs into the bodies of all her dead friends. "Kill her, mommy! Kill her!" Pamela channeling crazy bitch realness as the final battle happens. Hit here, hit there. They make their way to the lake, Machete in Pamela's hand. Alice overpowering the elder she managed to take the blade and BAM! Mrs. Voorhees became headless, damage is done, the wicked witch is dead. Lord only knows why but Alice takes to the lake overnight and wakes up to an angry child taking her under. (maybe the best jump scare of all time.) surviving she wakes up in the hospital asking about the whereabouts of Jason. Clueless cops saying they didn't find a boy but she and we know that he's still there.
It's an iconic horror film and you have to appreciate it for what it is. It's a fun time when you're with others drinking. To me, the series starts to get better once Jason takes the reins. The first couple entries that is.

Friday the 13th (1980)
The film concerns a group of teenagers who are murdered one by one while attempting to re-open an abandoned campground, and stars Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Kevin Bacon, Jeannine Taylor, Mark Nelson and Robbi Morgan. It is considered one of the first "true" slasher movies.

Scream (1996)
10/10
One of my favourite movies of all time - I love the plot, setting, twists and of course the characters. Sidney Prescott is one of the most layered and likeable protagonist/final girl I think slasher films have to offer. Tatum (played by TiBB favourite Rose) and Billy (played by TiBB sex symbol Skeet) are also amazing characters with likeable (in Tatum's case) and complex (in Billy's case) characteristics which makes them feel much more than standard slasher characters which usually don't have much depth than 'the slut', 'the bitch', 'the virgin', 'the nerd', 'the jock' ect.
I think the most likeable quality about Scream is the fact it's so self aware and it doesn't take itself too seriously - yet you don't feel like you're wasting your time on trash because it has an amazing story to it. I like the backstory of Maureen Prescott also (although it's touched upon more in other films) and I think it's more relevant in this film than it is in say, Halloween. Scream is a film that deserves nothing but praise and it thoroughly deserves the 10/10 I have awarded it.

I have not seen this movie in years so it's great to give this another watch to refresh my memory.I thought Annie was going to be the survivor, she was the only likeable and fun character so it was a bit sad when we saw her die. The only problem with this film was we didn't see everyones deaths fully but I found it smart we saw the killer in their view. Of course my favourite death scene on this movie was Jacks!! Jason's mother speaking like Jason was really creepy but amazing! I find this franchise amazing in general so im really looking forward to the 2nd one.

It's a very boring film that's completely derivative of Halloween. I don't find the lore interesting, the characters were unlikable cutouts that were there to be killed and I think the film lacked the sense of fun that slashers need to succeed. Very bland.

Friday the 13th (1980)
7/10
Friday the 13th kick started the early 80's slasher film phenomenon that was ignited by Halloween (1978). The film centers around a summer camp called Camp Crystal Lake, which has re-opened for the first time since 1957, after a drowning had taken place there previously. A group of teenagers are working as camp counselors for the re-opened holiday camp only to find themselves at mercy to an unknown assailant picking them off one by one.
It's a decent film in itself - can be quite dull at times. But it's pretty much your typical vintage slasher flick. The 2nd one is much better imo.

Friday the 13th:
7/10
Friday the 13th is, on the whole, a good horror movie in my opinion. I really like the sense of dread that slowly and quietly builds throughout, and I LOVED Betsy Palmer (RIP) as Pamela Voorhees. Her shift from a warm, motherly presence to deranged psychopath always gives me the chills, and I love that she has a personal motive for the killings. Billy Loomis in Scream said that it's always scarier when there's no motive ... I disagree. I think a heartbroken mother driven to madness by her son's death is much scarier because the awful things she's doing are grounded in raw human tragedy, which I think is more satisfying than "They're evil because they are".
Something else I liked was how it lulls you into thinking that Annie, the girl hitchiking to the camp, was a possibility for the central protagonist and final girl. Her being offed so early was a cool swerve.
However, one big gripe that I have with this movie is that it's presented in a mystery format, with the killings committed by an unseen antagonist ... only for it to be somebody who we hadn't met until prior to the big reveal scene. As much as I love Pamela and her story, I just wish we met her, even briefly, earlier in the movie.
Another issue I have (soapbox time), is the snake killing scene. That was reportedly a real snake being killed, which I just think is unnecessary. They can fake numerous human deaths but they can't do the same for the animal death? There's no excuse whatsoever to slaughter an animal for the filming of a movie scene as far as I'm concerned.
On the whole, I always enjoy this movie and under other circumstances would be happy to award it an 8/10, but the issue I have with the killer being unknown to us most of the time brings it down to 7.5, and the snake killing takes it further down to a 7 (I was tempted to give it a lower score based on the latter but I wanted to reflect how, that aside, I did enjoy the film).
Rankings:
1. Scream (8/10)
2. Friday the 13th (7/10)
Yes, I'm copying the rankings idea.
Friday the 13th (1980)
2/10
Boring. Dull. Clearly made to cash in on Halloween's success. The kills are the best part of the film. The characters are without depth besides Pamela Voorhees - which is ironic considering she is on screen for one of the shortest amounts of time. Betsy Palmer (RIP) played her brilliantly. The final girl was decent, if not a bit dull - but the film is 35 years old after all. There was a building suspense about it all - my favourite sequence was Marcie's death. However, the film lacks any real charisma or scares - Halloween was FAR superior. Also, the snake kill is vile so that's a contributing factor to the 2 out of 10 I give it.

Night two - Friday the 13th (1980)
http://www.cinemaretro.com/uploads/FRIDAYONESHEET.jpg
I have only seen sequels or remakes of the Friday the 13th series so I was looking forward to watching the original because I've never seen the killer be anybody other than Jason.
Well I'm bitterly disappointed! The film for me is by far one of the most dull horror movies I've seen. Contrastingly, to scream the opening scene failed to grab my interest in the film. We saw some camp workers sat around a fire to go to have sex before being killed? For me there was zero suspense and I wasn't connected with the film straight away. Usually films I often like grab my attention from the start but this opening scene felt lacklustre.
One point I must get onto is the HIDEOUS and ATROCIOUS acting skills of some of the actors cast in the film. The girl at the beginning who got a lift by a lorry driver is perhaps one of the most annoying film characters I've ever had to watch and also played by one of the worst actresses I've ever seen in a movie. The only decent acting skills I saw throughout were Betsy Palmer (amazing tbh), Kevin Bacon and the girl who plays Alice. The rest can all have their careers crash and burn they were that terrible (oh and the girl who played Brenda was okay I suppose).
Not only did I not like actors in the movie but I also did not connect with a single character. Scream the other night made me connect with Casey who was in the film for just over ten minutes. The ones who were in for an hour or so didn't even connect with me in this film. They were also so transparent and annoying you had your 'Annoying sex mad jock' your 'shameless slut'... which seem to be cast in most slasher movies. They just didn't really have any depth to them which made it really hard to try and connect with the characters.
The kills for me also were repetitive and I got bored. There were no chase scenes or good build ups to the death you would just see what Mrs Vorhees saw through her eyes before stabbing one of the characters.
The only good part of the film is the last fifteen/twenty minutes were Mrs Vorhees finally comes into the film and reveals her backstory of Jason drowning in a lake. I liked the backstory tbh and felt it held up quite strong. Betsy Palmer was amazing at playing the role of a psychopath 'KILL HER MUMMY' was chilling. But then again even that had its bad points such as the chase scene between Mrs Vorhees and Alice being so boring with Alice just keep hitting her seemingly knocking her out before running away only for Mrs Vorhees to find her again and it go round in a circle.
The twist with Jason at the end was good! Great way to bring him into the sequels and again one of the few good points to the film
Overall - 2/10

Night three - House of wax
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/House_Of_Wax_movie_poster.jpg
I've heard a lot about house of wax and it's always interested me but I've never watched it. This film was the one I was most excited about on the list (well this and prom night).
It certainly delivered! I wasn't expecting much from the film I thought it would be okay but not amazing but I really really enjoyed it throughout. Even though the film got off to a relatively low start I did like the ominous atmosphere from about fifteen minutes into the film. The car engine staring at them and Carly falling into the pit of road kill both built this tense ambience around the film and got me excited to see what was coming next. The opening scene also with the two twins and the mother was great and it got me wondering what the film was all about.
The acting in the film was actually really good. Even Paris who I expected to be terrible actually really pulled it off and was convincing enough I felt. Chad Michael Murray however was the real star of the film and I thought he played the character of Nick excellent, he was great at playing the miserable side of Nick but also was great at playing the determined side of his character and I loved the bond between him and his sister Carly in the film.
The films slow start did get me loosing interest a little after a half hour in but once Carly and Wade arrived in Ambrose the film really got going. Carly's chase scene with Bo in the church and in his car was a really good chase scene and I love a chase scene  I thought Carly was a goner though after Bo caught her outside the church but thank god she wasn't as she was my favourite character in the film besides Nick. The kill scenes in the film I thought were decent. Especially Paige's which I loved and I thought Paris really shone during the chase and the death scene for Paige and the pole going through Paige's skull was really gory but was a great kill! The other kill scenes were good but Paige's for me will be the one what will stick in my head probably as I loved it. However, I did feel that maybe three deaths in ten minutes was too much and maybe some should have been saved for earlier or later during the film to keep interest.
The chase scene between Carly, Nick and Bo in the cinema was really chilling and had me on the edge of my seat while Bette Davis was singing I'm writing a letter to daddy in the background which added to the eerie atmosphere in the scene. I think Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray really played the sibling bond well on screen and it was nice seeing two siblings work together in a film for a change rather than a couple of people who don't really know each other.
The final twenty minutes in the film managed to keep me gripped and interested thoroughly as I just didn't know what was going to happen! Both ago and Vincent's deaths were satisfying for me and I felt unlike Mrs Vorhees death in Friday the 13th they were a good climax were as I felt Mrs Vorhees death was actually very anticlimactic and wasn't fitting enough for her character.
The final twist at the end was a great way to leave the film open for a possible sequel and it was so eerie seeing the other brother wave goodbye to Carly as she was driven away but sadly a sequel was never produced
Overall - 8/10

Well, I was really looking forward to this film but I didn't enjoy it much, the only good thing about it was seeing Paris Hilton(even though her acting was tragic) and Chad Michael Murray. It lacked the scary suspense and most of the characters were basic. Bo cutting Carly's finger off was gross(good for the movie) and Carly smashing Bo's face in with a hammer was the best scene of the movie. I was bored watching this throughout and wanted it to end. I wouldn't be watching this movie anytime soon.

House of Wax
I thought it was a passable but forgettable film, I think the idea of it is creepy but they weren't too successful at making the film scary at all when it could have been. The acting was so-so and the characters mostly fell into typical slasher cliches. I did like Nick though and thought that he was a character that mostly defied cliches as you would think that, at the start, Jared Padalecki's character (Wayne, I think?) would probably be the male lead when he turned out to be the first character to die. Aside from his death and Paris Hilton's chase and death scene, I think the film lacked big memorable moments.
I didn't hate watching it but I probably won't remember much of it in a few days time. Middling but watchable.

The House of Wax (2005)
7/10
I liked it. I didn't think the acting was nearly as bad as made out - Paris was actually pretty decent in my opinion. The movie was far better than other movies of its type - and although it had a boring or so first 40 minutes - the characters are well developed and everything is set up well. Suspense was built well with the ditch full of road kill, the car driving onto the camp and then driving away and then Carly later realizing that Bo's car was the car at the camp. I thought there was some classic scenes in this film - the cinema scene was extremely suspenseful, Paige's chase scene was iconic and her death scene was brutal which made up for the lackluster deaths of the two lesser used characters (Blake and Dalton?) and the scene where Carly realized the funeral was full of wax people was amazing and extremely tense. The finale of the film was fun and I liked the fire element which kept things suspenseful and the twist at the end was amazing with the road kill guy being the third brother. :flutter: However, the film doesn't go without it's problems of course, as I've already said the first 40 minutes or so were boring even though it was used to set things up, some of the deaths were lack luster and the plot is kinda silly...how could 3 people build a house of wax and where did they get all the wax from? Taking all this into account, I decided to award the film a 7.

House of Wax:
6.5/10
I was prepared to give this a lower score for like the first 50 minutes when pretty much nothing was happening, but when it gets going this is actually a competent horror movie. Nothing special or particularly engrossing, but decent enough for what it is.
It's main strength is the eerie, nightmarish atmosphere. I have to admit, the wax figures royally creeped me out, and Wade's fate in particular into one is one of the more disturbing I can remember seeing in a horror movie. I also loved the melting house in the film's climax.
It's not a movie I'm instantly dying to rewatch, but it did manage to exceed my admittedly-low expectations. Oh, and Chad Michael Murray took his top off in one scene.

For some reason I really like this film, I really like most of the character and a lot of the scenes creeped me out. Also, one of the villains, Vincent terrified me the first time I watched it and nothing's changed. The scene in the village is great and has a eerie atmosphere, I particularly love the climax and Paris' chase scene.

Dollface's review of House of Wax
So i've seen this film about 20 times, because I think i'm one of the minority that actually thinks it's a really good film :worry:
It's a slow build up, but once everything starts happening, it has some good horror, some mild gore, and a good storyline.
The characters are well developed and likeable (most of them, anyway).
Overall I give it a 7/10
It gets extra points for having 'My Chemical Romance - Helena' as the credits song :flutter:

Scream 2 (1996)
10/10
This is my favourite film ever. I love it so much and it's most definitely superior to the first in my opinion. I love every scene in the film and I think the deaths are much better and most of the sequences are so suspenseful. It also has one of my favourite horror movie scenes ever with Cici's death :flutter: I also adore the opening with the cinema<333 I love the character development with Sidney, Gale and Dewey. The cop core sequence is extremely suspenseful and I think the killer reveal is amazing and a lovely homage to Friday the 13th. I think Scream 2 overall covers more ground than the first and of course I think all the performances in the film are great. I'm not sure what else to say that people aren't going to find out/already have found out for themselves when they watch it. It's my best film ever - and definitely the best entry in the Scream franchise<333

Scream 2 (1997)
8/10
I used to be quite meh about this sequel, however having re-watched it for the first time in a couple of years last week, I've actually come to my senses about this film. It's a very good sequel and is definitely on par with the first film. The film basically takes place two years after the first film and two students are murdered whilst watching the sneak-preview of the new Stab film (which is based on what happened in Woodsboro in the first film). After that, a new streak of copy-cat killings begin taking place and Sidney finds herself at mercy to ghostface once again. The killers in this film are really good. I loved the character of Micky and Mrs Loomis/Debbie Salt. Great cast too, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jada Pinkett <3
Also a shout-out to Gale Weathers and her red streaks  Gale's character in this film is enough to make Scream 2 brilliant. By far my favourite Gail Weathers.

Scream 2
Rewatched it today after years, so my opinion I had when I was 13 changed a lot. I'm probably gonna get a lot of heat for this, yet it's my personal taste. This is the weakest entry out of the 4. I'll talk about Scream 3 when we get to it.
Is anyone else really bothered by this opening scene? The only thing running through my mind was the Scary Movie parody. (the gloryhole, heh.) Will Smith's ex wife is annoying as hell, her death couldn't come soon enough. We get our remaining 4 survivors back, Randy being my favorite. For such a big character his death was rather disappointing. It's like seeing Gale getting her throat slit without a fight. But if one of the survivors had to get the chop, i wouldn't be crying over Dewy dying in that one scene and not coming back. The new meat isn't as memorable. Sid's new boyfriend was just there, but her friend was cool, I liked that whole cop car scene. They really underused Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Now for the killers... my god they're the worst of the Ghostfaces. Loomis had such a great motivation to do what she did, but she just sucks as a killer. Having a minion doing all the dirty work is weak. Mickey's reveal was just dull. My least favorite final act for sure.
Overall it feels rushed, seeing that it was released under a year after the original and went through rewrites totally makes sense. Like Wes didn't want to do another but the studio was on their knees begging. It does have some good moments. I just wish they spent more time with the script. I don't love it, I don't hate it. Yet it kept my attention.

Scream 2:
9/10
I honestly think Scream 2 is better than the original (which I especially enjoy saying about a film that included a whole scene dedicated to discussing how horror sequels are crap). Making a sequel to a movie as highly-regarded as Scream was a massive risk, but I think it paid off and then some. I love how they weren't afraid of overriding the original movie's happy ending for the few survivors by offing one of them in this one (and not just any, but the one who served as a sort of surrogate for the audience themselves). Randy's mid-movie murder was a bold move, and one I'm glad they made (as much as I loved Randy).
I also think the mystery element of Scream 2 surpassed that of the original. I found the reveals of Mickey and Debbie Salt (and then the subsequent reveal of her true identity) to be much more satisfying than the reveals of Billy and Stu. Mickey was kind of a Stu-esque character, but a more reigned back version so his reveal as a psychopath still works as a swerve I find.
Of course, the main reveal is that of apparent comic relief character Debbie Salt (who I loved throughout the whole movie by the way ) not only being the mastermind behind the slayings, but the mother of Billy Loomis. Even though I've seen this movie a good few times and know it's coming, I always absolutely love the scene of her reveal and the drastic change from the persona she's been using throughout the film and her true psychotic nature. Also, giving the new killer a real link to the original murders, rather than it just being a random copycat, was a great angle.
I know that the original ending was different but was re-written due to a script leak (Mrs Loomis was still the main killer but her accomplices were Derek and Hallie instead of Mickey). While Hallie being in on it would have been really cool (and I honestly wish they kept that in), I'm glad they didn't go down that route with Derek. The original already had the apparent red herring boyfriend be the killer, the sequel needed to do something different so I'm glad they did in the end.
What I want at the end of a whodunit story is to feel satisfied with the answers I got, and Scream 2 absolutely satisfied me. It also delivered in the slasher department. To be honest, as far as mystery slashers go, it's pretty close to perfect. :)

Scream 2
Scream 2 is an enjoyable sequel if a little bit overlong. Unlike most slashers out there, the characters are not just walking talking soon to be corpses but well realised characters that you can root for. The core cast is as entertaining as ever and the satire hasn't lost it's touch after 18 years either. Although it's not as good as the original I still think that Scream 2 is a genre classic in it's own right.

Another great Scream movie, I still prefer the 1st one but this movie was just as enjoyable. The opening scene was great where we saw Phil Stevens get stabbed in ear and Maureen getting stabbed several times in-front of others. The characters was amazing the only unlike-able one was Cotton Weary. I found it amazing when we were told that the killer was following the pattern from the 1st one... Maureen,Steven and Cici(Casey). I was gutted when we saw Randy get stabbed because he is one of my favourite characters. Mickey being the killer was obvious but I rather him than another boyfriend. He's my favourite ghost face from the franchise and having a female villain was great because it shows females can be killers. Dewey and Gail are so cute together. I can re-watch this movie so may times.

Night four - Scream 2
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/7/7f/20150801134532!Scream_2.jpg
Usually I tend to think that horror movie sequels are often worse than the original but this was a really enjoyable sequel to the scream franchise. It opened well with a lot of tense built around Maureen's death scene and also it kept the jovial tone it had in its first instalment. The dark comedy is a great part of scream and I think that's why I enjoy it so much because the comedy isn't deliberate and doesn't make the movie loose it's tone of horror. I do prefer the opening to Scream 1 but that's only because it's probably my favourite opening to any horror movie but this one still holds strong I think. I liked the nostalgic feel taking you back to the first one with the movie 'Stab' and the scene of Casey's death.
Tying in with the dark comedy theme I liked seeing Randy return again for the sequel. I think he's a great character for comedic value and I really enjoyed his heated discussion between his peers about movie sequels. It was a great device for breaking the fourth wall as Randy was used also in the first movie. It's a shame that Randy met his fate I think as he is my favourite male character in the franchise but I guess that Dewey is needed for his love story with Gale. I was also shipping Randy and Sydney so it's a shame that they never got together as I think they would've made a great on screen couple and one I definitely would've rooted for.
My two joint favourite scenes in the film have to be Gale's chase scene in the theatre department and Cici's death. The build up to Cici's death was amazing and suspenseful. Her death was aesthetically pleasing also as it wasn't anticlimactic and didn't just see her stabbed by ghost face but her being thrown over her balcony for me made her death scene much more memorable and one I won't forget. Sarah Michelle Gellar also played the role of Cici brilliantly but I love Sarah M-G in everything she's in to be honest. I loved Gale's chase scene in the theatre department because it was really filled full of suspense and just watching her narrowly miss her fate at the hands of ghost face several times left me on the edge of my seat.
One criticism I do have is that the characters I couldn't connect with as much as I could in the first movie. Rose McGowan played Tatum amazingly in the best friend role but I felt that the girl who played Halle was just very average and I have no real opinion on her. I much preferred the friend group as a whole in the first movie and found them really developed but I couldn't tell you much about the friend group in this movie apart from whether or not they played a role as a good guy or a bad guy.
I liked the fact that Wes Craven didn't go down the route of making the boyfriend the killer again. About forty minutes into the film I was convinced they were going to go down the same route but I'm glad they didn't as it would just feel like they'd ran out of ideas. I think Mrs Loomis' motive as to being the killer was realistic and pleasing to the viewer. The actress who played her also played the role of a sociopathic 'woman scorned' killer really well and I loved the final showdown between Sydney and Mrs Loomis in the theatre with the theatre equipment cascading from the ceiling. Another point I liked about the killings was that they were copy cat killings and I think it was clever of Craven to add those details in.
Cotton Weary was a nice addition to the cast and I liked the subplot of him wanting to clear his name. For a short while I initially thought that maybe he had killed Sydney's mum but I'm glad he didn't because I liked his character being a protagonist. Although I couldn't really connect with him and did find him somewhat annoying.
Overall - 9/10
This simply scores one point lower than the original because I find the supporting cast a lot harder to connect with.
Overall scores:
Scream - 10/10
Friday the 13th - 2/10
House of wax - 8/10

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
7/10
One of the many (not really) post-Scream slasher flicks to grace our screens in the late 90's, some may say this is a rip-off of Scream or Tesco Scream or whatever. And yes, it pretty much is. But that doesn't stop it being quite an enjoyable slasher flick on its own. The plot of this one is four teenagers hit a stranger whilst driving in a car and they dump his body in the sea and make a pact to never mention what they just did again or to never tell anyone and keep it a secret from everyone they know including the police. Fast forward a year later and the four friends have parted their own ways until they each begin to get notes reading "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and begin to get picked off one by one by a fisherman with a hook for hands.
Pretty much your typical slasher film - teenagers, killer, body-count. Being a massive slasher fan myself, of course I'm going to enjoy it. It's got nothing on Scream, ofc. But it's still a fun, enjoyable film that shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's got a good cast - Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Freddie Prinze Jr, Johnny Galecki. The killer is very creepy, imo. A fisherman with a slicker and a hook for hands. Quite original and something a bit different from the usual knife that's mainly used as a weapon in these sort of films. Plus, there's a brilliant chase scene with Sarah Michelle Gellar (far better than her Scream 2 one) which I just love and is worth watching just for that alone.

Night five - I Know What You Did Last Summer
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a2/I_Know_What_You_Did_Last_Summer.jpg
I think this movie has all the right ingredients to be something really special. But it sort of both works and doesn't work for me. The opening to the film is brilliant and I like films (especially horror films) that don't take forever to get going. It had a really great start and was only around fifteen minutes in when the hit and run took place. I found this to be one of the most interesting scenes as we got to see a little more about the characters and were beginning to scratch the surface with them. The scene were the group dumped the body in the docks was chilling when the supposedly dead fisherman opened his eyes and it really made me jump. There were actually many chilling and eerie moments in the movie such as Max's body in the boot with the crabs crawling out his mouth and the actual idea behind the killer.
However, I do think that for the next thirty/forty minutes or so the film gets incredibly boring. We find the poison pen letter to Julie with the movies title written on it then we see the group mainly speculate for a good three quarters of an hour as to what could be happening. Not much happens at all apart from Max's thirty second death scene in that huge chunk of the film. It gets a little tedious for my liking but I did like the scene between Julie, Helen and David Egan's sister Liz. I felt really empathetic towards her character and I liked the friendship duo of Helen and Julie.
Overall my favourite character in the film by far was Helen. I think she would have made a brilliant final girl type character and would've defied your typical final girl. I feel Julie is way too much of your typical final girl. Julie annoyed me on more than a couple of occasions but I did think Jennifer Love Hewitt portrayed her well but I just couldn't really warm to her character. I found Helen much more charismatic and her sister and fathers repulsive treatment of her made me like her even more as I felt so much sympathy towards her character. Helen's chase scene for me was also the most enjoyable part of the film and once again Sarah Michelle Gellar showed off her outstanding talent. I loved the tense build up and then the final kill at the end when it seems like she has finally gotten away from the killer </3
Onto the final scene. Even though I warmed to Julie a lot more in this scene, I did think that it was sort of crap. It just wasn't that good to be honest we just saw the killer chase Julie for a good fifteen minutes. I know I have expressed my love for cage scenes in the past and I do LOVE chase scenes but I did want to see the killers motive explained a bit more. He just basically said he didn't like that they murdered someone and that was about it. There was no communication or motive or reasoning and it just left me thinking 'Why?'. The final final scene with Julie in the changing rooms was great though with the fisherman bursting through the mirror. It left the mind to wonder what would happen with such an ambiguous ending.
Overall - 6/10
A good film but the tedious chunk in the middle and the messy final scene bring it down loads

To me it's not one of the effective slashers out there. It's still a good time even if you don't give a crap about the story. Sarah is hands down the highlight of the film. The chase between her and the fisherman makes me so nostalgic. Also Ryan in this film was an early crush. Overall I don't have much to say about this time.

I forgot to mention it in my review, but I'm not really a fan of the final scene/showdown with Julie and the killer at all. It lacked suspense and it felt more like an action movie with her being stranded on the boat and running away from him and Ray trying to save her. It was quite a let down. I much prefer I Still Know's ending.
Also, I find that chunk where they're speculating quite interesting actually. You get to see more of the characters and there's that mystery sort of vibe to it that I really enjoy in these kind of films. I do agree though that it is quite a slow film. The deaths/chase scenes don't really begin till the last 20-30 minutes of the film.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
7/10
I like this film - it's very suspenseful and entertaining. Standout character/actress is most certainly Sarah Michelle Gellar - brilliant performance and an excellent part in the movie - I enjoyed all her scenes and her chase scene is just amazing - easily the best aspect of the film :flutter: It's also a little devastating that she's so close to surviving when the fisherman gets her</3 Julie and Ray are also entertaining but I wish Helen had been the lead - and I guess the other characters (Barry, Elsa and Max) provided us with some death scenes to keep the slasher element of the film there. The twist was okay - the film having us believe the killer was David Egan and then it turning out to be Ben Willis - and the showdown on the boat was quite the payoff for the film which sometimes had tedious points in it. However, I don't think there's actually much to the film and we've seen it all before in my honest opinion - plus sometimes it can get quite boring so I'm going to award it a 7/10. Helen :flutter:

Like how Friday the 13th was created to be nothing more of a cash grab to ride on the coattails of Halloween, IKWYDLS's only reason for existing was to make cash off the fact that Scream had rejuvenated the slasher genre and it shows. The premise is interesting but the execution is sloppy and boring and the film itself suffers from identity issues and the ending is a complete wash. Trash.

I love this film, I LOVE the killer reveal and Debora is an icon, just like her son. This film also contains possibly the most tense scene in the entire franchise with the car case and ghostface trying to open the door. It shook me to the tooth enamel. For the most part I actually enjoy this film, the scene where they run the guy over is really tense an interesting imo, as others have said it gets a bit dull but the I c o n i c chase with Helen makes up for it, shame she actually dies though. The climax is decent enough but I don't really like who the killer turns out to be. Overall, a decent film

I Know What You Did Last Summer:
5/10
Yeah, this doesn't really work for me. For a slasher, the kills are few and far between and the mystery (the most important element in a movie that takes this whodunit format) just doesn't amount to a satisfying resolution at all.
It's funny because Friday the 13th had the killer be someone we'd never seen before (something I HATE in mysteries), but Pamela Voorhees was such a brilliant character that I can't hate the reveal too much. Here, we technically had met the killer earlier (as a body in the road), but the reveal feels even less satisfying. On top of that, the final chase is just boring and not really the thrilling experience (for me anyway) that I'm sure they intended.
I loved Anne Heche's character Missy so I kind of wish she was the killer. Or if not her, Freddie Prinze Jr. When it leads you to thinking it's him near the end, only to do a swerve and end up being this guy who we don't really know at all (other than from the accident scene, but his face was still essentially a mystery to us) ... yeah, that frustrated me.
And then of course they had to include the obligatory final scare. :idc:
It gets a 5 and not lower because I didn't absolutely hate it with a raging passion, but I didn't exactly like it either. My main feeling when it was over was ... meh.

On the opening of the film, I loved it! It got straight into the swing of things and didn't waste no time. I think horror movies are definitely one genre of film that needs to try and keep their audiences engaged from the start. I think their was great suspense in the opening throughout and I loved how the director lead the viewer into a false sense of security after you believe Michelle could be safe after escaping from the gas station only to be brutally murdered in her car.
Another clever point about the film was that clearly the producers never forgot to link it back to its theme of urban legends. In the film there were constant mentions to urban legends casually and subtly placed in. Such as Sasha's talk show which had numerous mentions to urban legends (e.g. the birth control pills being swapped with aspirin) and later on the extra in the film mentioning to Sasha the legend of the song 'Rollercoaster of love' being a real scream played in the song. It never forgot its roots and what the film was all about and I really liked this aspect of the movie.
Regards to the characters in the movie I mostly liked all of them and found most easy to make a connection with as a viewer. I liked Paul's slow progression from being a bit of an antagonist in the movie to becoming one of the main heroes and I think Jared Leto portrayed both sides of Paul's character well. I also liked how Parker and Paul switched roles also from being good guy to bad guy in the movie. Brenda was my favourite character throughout the film though. I probably was slightly biased before I watched as I already love Rebecca Gayheart from her role in 'Jawbreaker' (starring Rose McGowan). I loved her bubbly nature and naivety and found her to be the most likeable character.
The death scenes were good as they were all different. They didn't feel repetitive. However, I do feel that most of the death scenes (excluding Michelle and Sasha's) didn't have much build up or suspense to them. You would just see the killer approach from nowhere and kill them almost immediately with no struggle from the other character. That's only a minor issues but I have on numerous occasions in this thread expressed my love for a chase scene so I would have liked to have seen more in the film. The death scenes however were creepy and the killer was creepy herself so I do have to congratulate them on this.
Moving onto the reveal, I honestly had no idea who the killer was. For a while I thought the principal then changed my mind to Paul but I never ever would've even considered Brenda! I think it was really clever how the directors linked Natalie's backstory of the crash and Brenda's boyfriend being the one who they flashed and subsequently caused his death. Her final scene was tense and dramatic and much like scream I loved the element of breaking the fourth wall in the car were Paul turned to Natalie and asked what was the final twist going to be before Brenda appeared dramatically from the back seat only to (seemingly) plunge to her death. Again I liked the ending with Brenda sat in college (great setting by the way the college looked SO creepy) about to tell her story about her killing spree.
Overall - 9/10
A really underrated film which I really enjoyed and loved the theme and idea behind it.

Urban Legend
One of my first horror films in early memory. It had a big effect on me back then and today I watched it with the biggest smile. I love the hell out of this movie. Some things I love about it, it's creative. It's not your basic cat and mouse slasher because that **** gets boring really fast. The story itself is actually interesting, you're playing a guessing game throughout the whole thing. Also a fantastic killer. Gayheart really killed that part, she was frightening.
The casting of horror icons Brad Dourif (Chucky), Robert Englund (Freddy) and Danielle Harris (Jamie) is also icing on the cake. Overall, all the actors played their parts well. The deaths are also well done. The idea behind the murders is original and now I feel like I should watch Final Cut just to see if they follow the same route. (All I recall was the kidney ice death.)
Despite all the negativity this film got, it's a blast if you don't take it so seriously.

Another great slasher, and a great cast tbh and it was really creative and not obvious who the killer was. I normally find the main females boring on most slashers except for Scream of course, because Sydney is flawless, but I loved Natalie. Brenda was a great choice for a killer as I stated before it wasn't obvious. I'm glad they made a female a killer, it's always men and it gets annoying because females can be killers too. Tara Reid looked beautiful and was great in this movie.. Shame she had to die

Urban Legend (1998)
8/10
Like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend was one of the few slasher flicks in the late 90s to grace our screens following the success of Wes Craven's slasher classic Scream. This one is basically centered around a university which is beset by a rash of gruesome murders that resemble old urban legends. That's pretty much it.
One reason why I like this film is because of how unique it is. It's not your typical slasher where a bunch of stupid kids are being hacked up with a knife by a guy in a mask. No no. The plot of the film is interesting and original. I loved the idea of the deaths being based on Urban Legends as it made the deaths more enjoyable to watch and just better overall. I also like how it follows the theme throughout the film even when there isn't any kills. It has that mystery element to it too. Like Scream and IKWYDLS, the casting for Urban Legends is also good if not better. Rebecca Gayheart, Joshua Jackson, Jared Leto, Tara Reid, Danielle Harris, Robert Englund all played their characters really well. And the fact that you have the actors who played Freddie Kruger and Jamie Lloyd is a cert that the cast and the film itself will be good. The killer reveal was amazing. I loved Brenda as the killer. I loved her motive. I love how the reveal again fitted in with the theme of Urban Legends with the Kidney Heist.
Highly recommended

Urban Legend:
9/10
I'm just gonna say it ... Urban Legend is my favourite slasher movie. Unpopular opinion in general, but I just love it. The entire film has an eerie, sinister atmosphere right from the very first scene (an atmosphere suitable befitting of a dark urban legend) and maintains it for the entire movie. It's the sort of movie I'd love to watch on a dark autumnal night.
The whole "urban legends" theme really works for me too, since it's something I've always found intriguing anyway. You can tell the filmmakers really did their homework on the subject, not only are the kills great homages to various urban legends but the movie is full of little easter eggs referring to various others too. Then there's the casting of various horror icons, it really feels like a love letter to fans of the genre.
Urban Legend's main achievement for me, however, is the resolution of the mystery. Not only is the killer somebody who's been right beside the main protagonist, and right under the audience's nose, the entire time, but they have a compelling motive for the killing spree (and for the method they chose). I absolutely loved Brenda's reveal (even though I hate her for killing the dog :fist:).
If I had to nitpick, the scene where Natalie thinks Brenda is going to be attacked in the pool annoys me, why would that girl walk right over to the other side of the pool with her hood still up? I also wish Brenda's infatuation with Paul was entirely part of the facade (since her motivation was to avenge the dead love of her life), but on the other hand I suppose her madly craving the affection of another guy could very well fit with her mental state following her boyfriend's death.
These small gripe aside, I think Urban Legend is a brilliant movie that's been severely underappreciated because of it's status as a "Scream rip-off". It's a hell of a lot better than the vast majority of slashers that tried to emulate Scream.

Urban Legend
Like IKWYDLS, Urban Legend's existence is largely because of Scream but, unlike IKWYDLS, It's actually a serviceable film. The characters are largely forgettable but the kills are inventive and the fact that they're inspired by different urban legends was quite a new idea that I didn't think had been done before. Overall I enjoyed the film, I don't think it's a classic but it's not bad either to say that it's a cash in film.

Scream 3
I'm just gonna say it. This film's a guilty pleasure. Yes, I know how bad it is. Yes, I know how some Scream fans dislike it. But to me there's something charming about it. One thing I ****ing love is Parker Posey playing Jennifer Jolie playing Gale Weathers. Everything about her character just has be dying and I would watch it again just for her. Sad she had to go but at least her death was memorable.
The whole Stab 3 thing I actually liked. It was nice to see the Hollywood interpretation of the characters we already know. It was nice to see Cotton die since he was useless and living off Sidney's heroic actions in 2. So yay. I personally loved this killer. He worked alone, he was smart, brought something knew and he was Sid's damn brother. I believe he has a great reason to do what he did. If I was shot down by my mother I would go ape**** too. The whole backstory of the mother is kinda tragic too. Oh and Gale's hair was terrible.
So yeah, I do like this film. I might be in the small percentage tho but can't win 'em all!

Scream 3 is my least favourite Scream but after the re-watch i don't find it that bad. It started off great where we saw Cotton get killed (thankfully, he's my least favourite) Christine screaming when she got stabbed and the music playing was a good scene. The characters were a bit meh except for Angelina and Jennifer. I didn't like the killer but the story goes I guess. It would have been better if Angelina was the killer. "when your friends with Sidney you die" I love this quote. detective kincaid  The mother scenes and voice were really creepy(which is great for the movie)

Scream 3:
7/10
I remember hating this movie but upon a rewatch, I think I've been a little harsh on it. It's not a patch on the first two, but it's a perfectly enjoyable film for what it is.
I have issues with how, at times, Scream 3 overdoes the comedy element that it managed much better in the first two movies. That said, it's not as overbearing as I remember. The voice changer thing also bothered me slightly, having exact replications of everybody's voices wandered a little too much into the realm of disbelief (even though it did provide some creepy moments like Roman using Cotton's voice when going after his girlfriend).
Something else I didn't love was the OTT final part with Roman when he won't die, it just looked silly. Not to mention having Sidney kill him would have been much more fitting and satisfying. On the subject of Roman, I actually like him as the killer and his motivation.
I also loved the scenes with Sidney in the recreation of her Woodsboro home, they were some of the more eerie scenes in the movie (along with Sidney being haunted by the memory of her mother, which was a really cool touch).
Yeah, it's not a classic but it's not half as bad as I always remembered it.

Scream 3 (2000)

It's not as bad as it's made out to be, imo. Sure, it's worse than 1 and 2 but I think it's better than 4. I liked the Hollywood aspect as previously mentioned - it helped to reinvent the format of the movies and I liked the development the trio got (well, Gale and Dewey). It shows that they don't have to be apart of the group of people getting killed to be featured heavily (take note Scream 4 - the main 3 got about 20 mins of screentime between them?) and I LOVED Parker Posey as Jennifer Jolie. A genius creation who should have lived for the next film (although she would have had no place in Scream 4 so maybe scratch that) I loved the opening too, it helped tie some things together killing off a straggler like Cotton. I find the climax to be entertaining and the link back to Maureen Prescott and Roman actually being the cause of the whole 3 killing sprees was a great way to tie things together - it probably just fell a little flat. My main gripe with the film is besides Jennifer, none of the fresh blood is developed enough and just remain dull cannon fodder to keep us interested when they are killed. So yeah, because of that, I'm scoring it an 8.
Will.

The Descent
The best modern horror film out there. Me and my cousin went to see it in the cinema, it terrified her enough to make her jump out of her seat and slapped me when the first Crawler appeared. We both watched the rest of the film hiding behind our jackets. I still bought it on DVD and rewatched it to death because it's that ****ing good.
They take the fear of claustrophobia and turned it to the max. The introduction of the Crawlers is a great surprised and I love the fact they took a slow burn approach with them and not shove it in our face. If you have a heavy heart for a loss of a child and partner, the fear of being caved in somewhere that hasn't been discovered. Then the crawlers are the icing cake on this emotional ride.
The group of friends are great. All different but they're all there for support for Sarah, who's family had a tragic fate a year before. Turns out she's the strongest of the group as she fights for her life. Even more after finding out that her closest friend had a little sumthingsumthing with her former husband. Babe just can't get a break. One thing I can nitpick on... errrmmm nothing really. I even liked all the of alternative endings. I guess I just wished they didn't make a sequel because I like the thought of Juno dying in the first film.
It's a new classic that is required viewing for horror fans of all types.

Scream 3
Scream 3 is a film that felt extraneous and pointless back when it was first released and time has done nothing to make it anything more than the disappointment of the Scream franchise. In a lot of ways, Scream fell victim to a lot of the tropes it parodied in previous installments.
Scream has typically always had well realised characters but aside from the main three characters and Jennifer, I felt that most of the cast simply faded into the background. The Killer was also terrible and his reasons for doing so are pretty illogical and far fetched. The film had a troubled production and it's evident in the final product. It doesn't help that the film drags horribly despite being shorter than the previous films.
Thank god they redeemed themselves with Scream 4.

The Descent
When it comes to horror films, The Descent is probably the best one I've ever seen. the setting and the monsters are both equally terrifyingm the characters feel realistic and well defined and they give the film a real sense of heart. Sarah's story and her journey through the film actually manages to be quite emotional which is something few horror films ever achieve never mind managing to be scary at the same time. The direction is also fantastic and it's shot amazingly well, there's very few horror films in which the location has unsettled me more than the monsters.
It's not only a great horror film but it's a great film in general, it makes me realise how truly awful most of the films (bar Scream 1&2) we've been watching have been in comparison. Also thank **** we've gotten a break from the slashers.

Night Seven - Scream 3
http://images.contactmusic.com/images/poster/Scream_3_2149440.jpg
Obviously Scream 3 is a bit underwhelming compared to the first two but I still think it's actually a pretty decent film. There are quite a few aspects which are a little crap but I think it's definitely underrated and not actually that bad of a film.
The opening scene isn't as good as the opening from Scream 1 and Scream 2 but it's decent enough. However, I think on the whole in the film all the death scenes are pretty subpar and not memorable compared to some of the death scenes in 1 and 2 (Cici's, Tatum's, Casey's...). The death scenes in the film seem to not have as much build up as they did during the first two they seem to be pretty quick fire like there's no real chase scenes between any characters apart from characters who survived like Sydney and Gale.
Onto the characters in the film. They're pretty thin and have no background to them, they're practically transparent to be honest. I don't really remember any character from the film who were new additions to the franchise apart from Jennifer. Jennifer was a fantastic character and her rivalry with Gale provided great comedic value throughout, her pure delusion also regarding Gale being a preference to kill over herself was hilarious and I think Parker Posey who played her was fantastic.
Even though I didn't like the new characters in the film I think this is perhaps the best Sydney. I really liked her character this time round she was the feistiness and most daring we had seen her, I think Neve Campbell's acting from the first movie has improved also not that it needed doing but I think she was fantastic in this one and could perhaps be one of the best horror movie actresses I've seen. Her chase scene with ghostface on the set was an enjoyable scene with great tension. It was my second favourite scene just behind the final twenty minutes.
I think the film does feel a tiny bit repetitive at times. Especially regarding Gale and Dewey who appear to be going round in circles regarding their relationship. It just seems that maybe the producers are running out of ideas for fillers during the film.
However, I think the filmed really redeemed itself with the final twenty minutes during the film. I think the ending to the film is pretty much just as good as the endings to the first two if not maybe even slightly better! The killer reveal was fantastic and I think Roman's motive was believable and great twist as I never saw it coming, Sydney really shone during the last twenty minutes and I loved the final scene where she gripped her brothers hand after killing him. It felt like justice had finally been served and it was brilliant.
Overall score - 6/10
The good and the bad are pretty much on par for the film but because I love the ending I scored it a 6.

The Descent:
8/10
The Descent is such an enjoyable horror film because it offers something different to a lot of the overdone, cliched horror scenarios seen so often. The bodies don't start to pile up until around halfway through the movie, but the preceding half isn't boring at all. On the contrary, the movie effectively builds a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere, so that when all hell breaks loose later, the effect is even greater.
The movie actually grabs you from early on, before they're even at the caves, when a happy opening to the film is suddenly shattered by the surprising death of Sarah's young daughter. I remember jumping out of my skin at this scene when I first saw this movie (and what makes it worse is that it's such a "real" tragedy that could happen in the real world), and I imagine it's even more unsettling for any parents watching.
One scene in particular that stays with me is when Sarah gets trapped in one of the tunnels and has to be helped by Beth. As someone who is terrified of being in that sort of situation, that scene really sets me on edge. And that's before the creatues have shown up at all.
Actually, as much as I enjoyed the whole movie, I probably would have loved a movie simply about a cave expedition gone wrong without the inclusion of the carnivorous creatures even more as my main area of interest in this movie is the claustrophobic setting and the very real perils that can arise there. That said, the creatures are definitely nightmarish and provide us with a lot of really effective scares when they start offing the cast.
The final scene in the movie is just haunting, as the camera pans away from an alone and hallucinating Sarah in the caverns. The US version apparently scrapped this and ended with Sarah seeing Juno in the car at the end of her dream, which I think is a real shame, the complete ending has such a larger effect. It's cruel to make you think Sarah got out, only to snatch it away with a final twist, but that's why it works.
I'd definitely recommend this to horror fans, especially those looking for something a bit different.

Night Eight - The Descent
http://www.morbidvisionfilms.com/CoolStuff/descent.jpg
This film singlehanded has changed my view on British films. It is perhaps one of the best horror movies I have ever seen.
The opening to the film was great and didn't waste no time, Shauna MacDonald played the widowed role very well it was heartbreaking watching Sarah crumble to the floor being told her daughter had died as people just walked past oblivious, and I felt the sudden death scene was such a shocking element to open it but I think it worked very well and set the ambience for the rest of the film.
I think even though we didn't get to see the monster type predators until the last forty minutes, the director kept a lot of suspense throughout to keep the viewer intrigued. There were a lot of 'jumpy' moments such as when Sarah woke up and the pole vaulted through the window and the bats flying out the cave which left me wanting more and also very scared. I'd say this film is definitely the scariest I've watched so far from the list. I loved the scene were Sarah was trapped in the cave also, it had great suspense fuelled as did the scene were the girls were crawling over the abyss to the other side and Juno nearly fell. Holly's fall also like the other two scenes added to the eerie and 'jumpy' nature of the film, her leg break was disgusting.
I think the supporting cast in the film were particularly strong. Juno was my favourite character and the actress who played her was brilliant. I liked her loyal side but also her characters tough edge and determined nature. However, I felt all the actresses played their roles really well and there wasn't really anyone who stood out as being subpar to the others.
Once the creatures were introduced into the film it really got going. I felt the crawlers were horrific but the film was already scary enough with the whole expedition gone wrong vibes and the eerie atmosphere. Juno's fight scene with the crawlers was great and I was shocked when she killed Beth as a result by accident! The most shocking part though was Beth tearing off her necklace to reveal Juno's affair with Sarah's husband I was so horrified and shocked but it was a phenomenal twist. Juno's loyalty and love for Sarah is undeniable however and I still do think she is a true friend to Sarah but I totally understand that why Sarah in her hallucination would attempt to murder Juno because that's the ultimate betrayal. My favourite scene in the whole film though was when Sarah fell into the pool of blood and had her showdown with two of the crawlers it showed a new feisty side to her character almost releasing her inner Juno.
The final scene is truly chilling though, You've been lead to believe for a good twenty minutes/half an hour that Sarah is actually alive and well and has escaped the cave. Only for her to be having a hallucination involving her daughter while the crawlers scream around her. Truly frightening but also I have so much sadness in the final scene also.
Overall - 10/10
Definitely a must watch for anyone who hasn't seen it. Best British film I have ever seen.

Black Christmas (1974)
9/10
Honestly one of the creepiest films (in my opinion) ever made. The calls are so disturbing and mystery of it all makes it even more terrifying. There is a lack of brutality in the film and you only see the killer once - and even then he is in the shadows, but it is honestly so suspenseful and creepy and keeps you on the edge of your seat. There are some disturbing elements to the film, including the killer imitating to be a cat from a girl's closet to entice her to open the door and eluding to the fact he killed a young girl called Agnes (although it isn't confirmed if they're related but it's inferred he's imitating his mother scolding him for murdering his baby sister). The main character, Jess, is well developed and you really feel for her and become terrified for her when she's the last one around and she sort of knows something bad is happening but can't accept it. Barb is an amazing feature as well - an amazing character whose provides some light relief and her death scene is one of the best aspects of the movie. The only reason the film drops a mark is because it needs tighter pacing - it's an hour and 40 minutes long but some aspects in the middle feel a little unnecessary (Peter's piano class/Jess being pregnant - but I suppose that adds to her character). Oh, and although some people may complain about the ending not actually answering any questions like who the killer actually was or whether Jess actually died (due to her being sedated and the killer leaving the attic - and then the phone ringing as a phone call always signifies a murder) but I think it adds to the ambiguity and charm of it. Overall, an amazing film and probably the best 'murderer in the house making phone calls to a girl downstairs' horror film out there which is why I'm awarding it 9 out of 10.

Black Christmas
I think Black Christmas is an interesting film from a historic perspective as it's one of the first films of it's kind and, like Halloween, there's a lot of horror film tropes that this film helped create. Unfortunately though I don't think it's aged too well entertainment wise, it's not a film I'd watch again.
I did like it though, I liked the ambiguity of it all and how they emphasized tension above gore. I liked how we rarely got a look at the killer either, it was an effective way to make what would be a typical maniac into something much more eerie. Although it's aged quite badly I do respect the film and the impact it had on the horror genre.

Black Christmas:
5/10
I have to be honest, Black Christmas never really drew me in. It has a really cool premise and some great moments of really creepy horror, but as a whole I found the movie quite dull and hard to really get in to.
The weird calls were used to good effect (and I really liked the inclusion of the "calls coming from inside the house" urban legend) and there is an increasingly-pervasive unsettling atmosphere building throughout the movie.
I'm torn about the killer remaining a mystery. On one hand, it maintains his creep factor. On the other, never really learning about him felt a tad anticlimactic.
In a nutshell, Black Christmas has moments that really work, but the whole film just didn't ever really entrall me I'm afraid. (Oh, and I wanted to know what happened to the cat! :fist:).

Black Christmas is something I've watched most years around Christmas time, rather than Halloween. I love the fact it involves Christmas (a jolly holiday) but also horror. It's not a perfect movie but it is bloody creepy, especially on a first viewing. I think it's an interesting film and deserving of a 6.5/10
Thanks everyone for the quick reviews by the way, I forgot to do it last night and was busy all day<3

Black Christmas (1974)
8/10
A brilliant Christmas slasher film. A classic. Despite the hate it gets on here :hmph: Love the setting and I found the calls and the atmosphere of the film to be quite creepy and unsettling. The death scenes were really scary to watch too, mainly because of the noises the killer makes and how you never see his face fully. The chase scene at the end with the killer and Jess was good, even though it wasn't a long chase scene. And the ending with a phone ringing was a nice touch. It hasn't really aged well and looks quite old fashioned, but for a film made in 1974, it still holds strong imo.
And Barb's character

Night Nine - Black Christmas
http://horrornews.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/black-christmas-version-6-movie-poster.jpg
Maybe old horror films just aren't for me? Personally I didn't really like this film and found the plot weak and boring. It does have some redeeming qualities but on the whole I wouldn't watch it again.
I think the films opening is too weak for my liking and I like an opening what I can connect with instantly as it makes you interested for the rest of the film. The call was pretty creepy I suppose made to the sisters but I just found the deep breathing really aggravating and I found the call to sound a bit immature saying 'SUCK MY DICK' it sounded like a thirteen year old boy had produced the script. The film did get better with Clare's death and her rocking in the chair was disturbing.
I did like some of the aftermath of Clare's death. We were allowed to make connections with the characters and get to grasps with them. Mrs Mac was a great character for her comedic value she brought to the film and Barbs scene over dinner where she broke down and blamed herself for Clare's disappearance really made me sympathise with her character and I think it was a nice way to let us in on her backstory. However, I do think that the aftermath after a while does get a little tedious because even though we do have Mrs Mac's death there wasn't really a build up to her death and afterwards it went straight back to the search of Clare. The calls however got creepier and actually rather frightening with the different voices down the phone and I liked the tension it built throughout.
Barbs death was my favourite scene in the film. The atmosphere was so unsettling and chilling with the Carol singers singing over her death as she was stabbed in the chest. I think this scene will be the one which will stick in my head.
Onto the ending of the film. I personally found it rather awful. The call coming from inside the house being brought into the film made it really dramatic and I think the producers could've done a lot with that route but the final chase scene with Jess was really dull. Although I do like ambiguous endings which allow a sequel to prevail I do feel we weren't really told enough at the end of the film. I did appreciate the fact they didn't go down the obvious path of Peter being the killer but I think not telling us who the killer was was just perhaps a sign of poor writing.
Oh and also the police officers not searching the full house e.g. the attic for Clare is a major plot hole and so unbelievable
Overall - 4/10
Yeah I won't be rushing back to watch this anytime soon...

I really like this film, a great modern horror.
The characters are brilliant, I love Kirby, each character is unique and brings something different to the film.
The opening scene is different and rather good, although they should have made it more suspenseful.
The alternative opening scene is far better and I wish they had used it.
The film progresses well, we're introduced to every character early on.
Sidney, Gail and Dewey are fantastic in the film, I like how Gail hasn't lost her fierce side.
The first major death with the girl next door was really gruesome and I loved it, had me on the edge.
I loved it when Ghostface and Sidney had a little face off.
The film progresses nicely and the deaths are great, each is individual and terrifying in it's own way.
Ghost face is a lot more extreme in the movie, especially when he threw Sidney's PA off the car park roof.
Overall the movie is great.
The reveal is awesome, I love how the killer was Gill.
The motive is very clever, rather shocking that someone would do it to become famous.
Lots of violence and action in the reveal.
I liked how it ended in the hospital, especially when the police officer not many people liked shot Gill.
Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot and would recommend it.

Scream 4
Scream 4 manages to salvage the series from the wreckage that was Scream 3. The balance between comedy and horror is much better this time around and the characters beyond Sidney, Gail and Dewey are both interesting and rootable, something that Scream 3 largely lacked. I liked that the film managed to keep up with the times and skewer modern horror conventions whilst staying true to the series and I think the killers are probably the best out of all four films. The only reason why I'm not rating this film higher is because it isn't as good as Scream or Scream 2.

Scream 4:
8/10
Well, that was quite a return to form. After a decent but ultimately subpar third installment, Scream 4 returns to the vibe that I loved about the first two.
The film-within-a-film opening was inspired (and I loved the cameos), the humour was well-managed once again, and the kills were executed (pardon the pun) effectively.
One little thing I didn't love was the police officer's "**** Bruce Willis" before he died. That was a rare case of this movie not applying a humorous element as well (I mean, it wouldn't be out of place in a Scary Movie death scene). But that's just a minor gripe in an otherwise brilliant film.
I really enjoyed the various homages to the original movie too, and how they were ultimately subverted (like the girl crawling under the garage door, the apparent character similarities that were then flipped around).
As for Jill, I loved her as the killer (she's second only to Mrs Loomis). Her twisted motivation, to be the new Sidney, was a nice angle and the scene of her injuring herself is obviously classic. The final shot of the movie is striking, with a reporter hailing Jill as "a hero straight from the movies" as the camera focuses on her dead face.
As said, Scream 4 is well and truly a return to form imo, and if it is indeed the final installment to the movie canon, it's ended on a high as far as I'm concerned.

Well I really enjoyed this film.. improvement on Scream 3. A Movie within a movie was a great idea and i really enjoyed the scenes. The characters were likeable as well mainly Jill and Kirby who shouldn't have died imo but her death scene was amazing. Oliva had a good death scene it was brutal. Sidney's nickname "Angel of Death' goes tbh. I loved Jill as the killer, she played a psycho really well. This films is so underrated it was 10x better than 3. Jill killing her mother through the letter box was another good death. I was happy Gail got stabbed this time instead of dewey. Sinister
Sinister features a lot of eye rolling cliches but also at the same time there's a lot of twists and turns that I've rarely seen in a horror film before. I liked the mashup of snuff films and demonic position and I really liked the main antagonist, his appearance was creepy as hell and he was rarely used which worked to amp up his fear factor. Overall I thought it was pretty good, the idea was great but I think the film suffered from cliched behavior from it's characters.

Night Ten - Scream 4
http://www.heyuguys.com/images/2011/03/Scream-4-Intl-3.jpg
The opening scene is great Lucy Hale's character talking about scary movies before being brutally murdered along with her friend had a great nostalgic feel to it and brought me back to the opening of the first film. It was a nice little surprise element also that it was just part of Stab 6. However, I think that the actual opening scene outside of Stab 6 is poor when you think back to the fantastic openings of the first two films and even the third was a much better opening.
One brilliant aspect to the movie is this time I felt that the new characters in the film were much better and not as poorly produced as the characters in the second and third film (particularly the latter). Kirby was a great character with many layers. Her feisty and sarcastic side but also her determined and loyal nature reminded me much of Tatum's character in the first. I also liked Judy's character and her rivalry with Gale and obsession with Dewey provided some great scenes.
The death scenes in the film for me were pretty weak though. There wasn't any real chase scenes or any elements of suspense for me. Rebecca's death was probably the most enjoying and suspenseful death in the film but I don't even think that holds up to some of the fantastic ones we were given in the original first and second film. The chase scenes were also pretty crap. The one with Gale at the barn was hideously messy and boring. I did like Kirbys death but I think that was purely for the shock factor that Charlie was the killer if it didn't have that shock factor behind it it would be pretty underwhelming and subpar.
The film redeems itself though with Jill being the killer. Emma Roberts did an amazing job at playing the sociopathic side of Jill who was desperate to replace Sydney and gain some attention from her family. The lengths she drove herself to was great and I loved the scene where she ripped out her own hair and threw herself over the glass table it was so disturbing but had an underlying element of comedy to it. The final scene at the hospital is also a stand out moment in the film and Jill's death was great the way Gale stood up and just simply said clear before Sydney proceeded to electrocute her was brilliant. The final shot also with the reporters describing Jill as all these insiparational and role model like quotes while focusing on her dead body was chilling.

7/10
A very entertaining entry in the franchise - however, it doesn't quite have the 'feel' of a Scream film in my opinion. I feel like maybe it's because the main trio lack in screen time compared to the other films. However, I loved most of the new characters - Jill and Kirby were especially amazing. Jill being the killer is such an amazing twist - and I adored how she went from boring cannon fodder to the best character in the film in a matter of moments during the finale. Her self harming/covering up the murders scene is also amazing<3 I did love how this film tried to put entertaining twists on the kills - the whole 'movie within a movie' opening, the killer being in the house over the road during Olivia's (BRUTAL - probably the most brutal in the franchise) death scene, Rebecca being thrown off the hospital roof, Robbie seeing the killer through a camera ect. It felt modern and like it'd really been thought about - but it scores low for me because like I said, it doesn't feel like a screen film. That's why it scores a 7/10 for me.
Thank you for your continued patience everyone and thanks to Luke/Dezzy and everybody who reviewed during my absence<3

rating - 7/10
Well i'm 50/50 with this film because it did bore me at times but it did make me jump. The videos where we saw families getting killed were quite creepy especially the lawn mower one. It had some good twists as i thought it was some monster that killed the families but it was the lost kids! I expected the boy to kill the recent family off because of his nightmares and that but i was shocked it was the girl. good film but it can be boring.

Night Eleven - Sinister
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f8/SinisterMoviePoster2012.jpg/220px-SinisterMoviePoster2012.jpg
A brilliant modern horror in my opinion and probably the most frightening film I've watched so far from the list.
I do understand that the film could be perceived as being a little boring in parts but I loved the family dynamic we were show and Ellison's backstory and history with writing. The opening scene with the family hanging from the tree was chilling and set an eerie ambience right from the outset. I think the scary atmosphere also slowly built and was maintained throughout. Trevor's night terrors were unbelievably creepy and made me jump a lot. I think the family dynamic of the almost seemingly perfect family with a rich and famous dad and two well behaved children when really underneath the surface was a family who were separated from each other due to Ellison's almost obsession with writing another book was very intriguing.
The home videos though with the murders were the most chilling and sinister part of the film. The editor did a great job at making them look like a real home video and fit the time frame they were meant to. Particularly the lawn mower killings terrified the living day lights out of me! The figure in the film was also really creepy but I do think that the killer glaring up at Ellison from the picture on his laptop when he made the phone call was cliche and cheesy.
Another rather big flaw I think is I do think there's a lack of content into the film to review about there's not much you can go over really...
The ending though was brilliant. The director and writers lead you into believing that Vincent would be the evil one all along until we saw Ashley and the demon girl in her room. The 'extended cut' endings with the children holding their fingers to their mouths were so memorable and chilling and a great final twist to the film. The daughters final scene while she filmed her parents death before writing out a tape and adding to the box of home videos was a great way to end the film. The very last piece of the film were the killer jumps out at the camera is too cliche for my liking and I think the film would've had a much better ending had it just ended on the box of home videos.
Overall - 8/10
The lack of content and the cliche parts bring it down a couple of marks but it's still a great modern horror movie.

Sinister:
8/10
Sinister establishes a grisly atmosphere right from the first scene, where you see a hooded family of four being hanged from a tree. The fact that it's being shown to us on a video recording just makes an already-macabre visual even creepier and it serves as a really effective way to get you interested in the story quickly.
One of the things that surprised me about Sinister, and that could set it apart from so many other horrors, is that it's not a movie with the core characters being killed off one by one throughout the movie. The body count (until the end) is confined to the snuff films that Ellison investigates. These recordings are really disturbing, just to see entire families murdered on camera (and the fact that the tapings have been filed under nonchalant titles such as "Family Hanging Out", a dissonance that just increases the eerie nature of them.
It does at times get a little slow, but I didn't feel that was ever overbearing because the mystery that was being slowly unravelled was so intriguing. Even at those slower times, I still cared about getting to the bottom of what was going on.
The end of the movie in particular was chilling, with the young daughter drugging and murdering (in violent fashion) her entire family, and it's a conclusion that I definitely think will stick with some people. The whole movie was a very gloomy, dark tale so the unhappy ending was actually very fitting (and worked better than a forced, tacked-on happy ending would have). My only gripe with the ending was the token final jump scare. It's such a tired cliche and it wasn't needed, the camera silently panning away from the box was a much effective close to the film.
All in all, I think Sinister is one of the better movies of it's kind and, thanks to it's dark atmosphere and macabre story, it's definitely going to stick in my mind for a while.

It Follows:
8/10
As much as I enjoyed this movie (which is why it got this score), I can't help but feel that it is slightly overrated just because of all the hype. But as I said, I did like it.
It's main strength is how different it is to so many other horrors out there, the horror genre in particular can be saturated with samey, cliched movies so this was refreshing. Another big strength is how it plays on the audience's paranoia throughout the film, I'd find myself scanning the background of scenes and expecting anyone I saw to be "it". That really adds to the fun of the viewing experience.
I also loved the final scene, where you see someone in the background following Jay and Paul. There isn't a big musical cue to let you know something scary is happening, the camera doesn't focus on the person in the background. The film just quietly lets you notice it and then abruptly ends, and I think this has such a stronger effect than a cliched jump scare would.

The Babadook:
7/10
I'm in two minds about this movie. On one hand, I ended up finding it quite boring (for lack of a better word) for the most part. On the other, I really appreciate what the film was doing, the message and the whole slow, foreboding atmosphere it was building up.
I liked how the story seemingly served as a reflection of mental illness (something that's very real and relateable) and it was effective in creating an increasingly uneasy, uncomfortable vibe throughout the film. I also really liked the main actress and she was a big part of me feeling invested in her character and her struggles. The scenes where the mother snaps and flies into a rage at her son are among the most unsettling of the movie, actually.
As I said, I found myself getting a little bored at times but I think that's more down to my personal tastes rather than a fault with the movie itself. It's received a high level of acclaim for a reason and I actually do understand why.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
6/10
Like Friday the 13th, based on the original alone, I really don't see how this managed to turn into one of the biggest film franchises ever  I suppose the media/cinema was different back in the 80s though, and it probably amazed audiences a lot more. Obviously, the concept is classic and it was directed perfectly by icon Wes Craven (RIP</3) - but I don't enjoy this film as much as I feel I should. I like Nancy and Glen as leads - and I think Tina's death is very disturbing and I felt for Rod, it's kind of one of those situations you put yourself in and panic because you can't comprehend what you'd do. His death was also very sinister even though it wasn't brutal - and I think the film shocks in some parts. Robert Englund also terrifies as Freddy - I can see how Freddy turned so iconic and I like how he differs from other slasher icons in the sense that he talks - which I guess has its drawbacks and it's plus points. However, the film feels slow in some parts and I think it's definitely aged, and the characters also get kind of annoying after a while - Nancy's parents including which is why I'm only scoring A Nightmare on Elm Street a 6 out of 10.

Night Twelve - It Follows
http://www.mattsmoviereviews.net/Images/itfollowsposter01.jpg
Even though the film is unique and creative and does contain some great moments I don't think it is worthy of its critical acclaim it has received. The opening scene is intriguing to the viewer and draws the viewers interest. The girls leg snapped backwards on the beach was so gory and disturbing, it left me drawn in from the start. It's eerie atmosphere maintained for the first ten/twenty minutes. Hugh 'seeing' a girl in the cinema who Jay didn't see left me intrigued and wanting to know more.
I do think the film has very large moments of being very boring though however. There are some scenes which last maybe as long as five minutes were no dialogue is used or there is not much movement or much going in terms of development (e.g. Jay in the hospital after her crash). It does lead a creepy atmosphere definitely the moments of silence but I do think they happened way too frequently and became annoying and left me thinking that actually a lot of parts in the film were very tedious.
The acting in the film was excellent though, considering the film was made on such a small and basic budget. Maika Monroe was fantastic and one of the best actresses I've seen in a modern horror. The scene where Jay was drugged with chloroform and tied to the wheelchair Maika was brilliantly convincing at portraying someone genuinely terrified and I think she maintained this high level of excellence throughout.
I do think the plot had the potential to be really good but I do think it did fall a little flat at times. I think the ending was very anticlimactic for the film. It didn't need to have like a movie chase scene or anything but I just don't think it felt like an ending somehow because it was a little dull. I do think the plot is clever and interesting and well thought out but I do think they could've done more with it.
Overall - 5/10

My all time favorite horror film, use to watch the **** out of the VHS when I was a child that I even bought more copies of it. I have the series proudly displayed in my room. The most iconic work from Wes and Nancy is my favorite final girl/scream queen. Also Johnny's legendary death. Even tho Tina's was more better. Freddy is my childhood, teenage years and adulthood.

Night Thirteen - The Babadook
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d7/The-Babadook-Poster.jpg
Okay this is an amazing modern horror film! Seriously like one of the best supernatural horror films I have ever seen. Australian horror movies are so underrated if this comes back next year I highly recommend we watched The Loved Ones.
The opening was effective and I did appreciate the slow build up towards it. I do think that most of the time when movies have a slow start they tend to make me lose interest but I think the odd behaviour of Samuel and Amelia's clear severe form anxiety and/or other mental health issues made me interested. I think also this is the type of film where a nice build up is absolutely necessary, a slasher can open straight away with deaths but in a supernatural you do need a background story. I think the backstory about the death of Samuels father was a nice touch and explained why Kate was so neglectful towards him at times as he just painfully reminded her of her tragic loss she had been faced with on the day of his birth. Moments such as when Samuel pushed his cousin from the tree house and when Amelia found the cockroaches in the wall kept me intensely interested and loads of these little things popped up frequently throughout.
I liked how the creators picked up on small amounts of detail to really make the film gel together well. The setting of the house was extremely creepy and Samuel's seizure in the back of the car was actually somewhat disturbing. The only thing I didn't like about the film and which part I didn't feel necessary was the graphic nature of the dogs death it was uneasy and uncomfortable to watch. That is my only one minute criticism of the entire film though.
The Babadook itself was such an odd yet somewhat rather fascinating creature and story. The blank pages at the end which ended up being completed were chilling when Amelia looked through them and opened the last page to see a cardboard version of herself slitting her own throat. I think Essie Davis was brilliant at portraying the contrasting sides of Amelia's character particularly her latter psychotic side. The young boy who played the role of Samuel was also great for a young child taking on such a heavy role. I think it must be hard for such young children to star in horror films.
The conclusion to the film I loved. Amelia's slow progression into the Babadook was filmed really well. I liked how slowly her character deteriorated from being slightly 'snappy' with Samuel telling him to eat **** to a full on psychopath wanting to murder her own son. Essie Davis really shone during these scenes I think she used every sort of acting skill she could to really pull off a character who was such a convincing lunatic. It was lovely seeing her finally bond with Samuel also the two finally celebrated his birthday and we saw them finally connect and understand each other at last.

A Nightmare on Elm Street:
8.5/10
A classic of the horror genre, and for good reason. A Nightmare on Elm Street is compelling and creepy throughout the whole movie, I'm honestly not surprised that it's remained so iconic.
One of the best things about the movie is how it creates paranoia about something as everyday as sleeping and I love how it leaves you unsure about when someone is awake or dreaming. A killer getting you in your dreams is probably one of the most unsettling horror movie concepts I can think of, to be honest. The scene of Nancy's dream at school (with Tina in the bodybag) has always been one of the most memorable for me, it's just really disturbing and suitably nightmarish.
I also liked how they tied Freddie's backstory in with the parents, rather than the kids just being stalked by a random killer. Some horrors forget story for the sake of just killing people off, but imo any good horror movie needs to be anchored by plot.
And, as expected, I have the creepy nursery rhyme stuck in my head now.

I really enjoyed it, I liked the decision to opt for long tense scenes over short cheap jumpscares and I think the premise of the film is quite unique and scary. The idea of a sexually transmitted curse that results in you being stalked by a relentless but slow creature is terrifying and I liked the symbology and subtext that the film provided.
I think my main issue that I have the film is that it felt anti-climactic. It was far too easy to dispatch the creature and the ending scene didn’t do much apart from potentially setting up a sequel. Despite the wishy washy ending though, I really enjoyed this film, I thought it was interesting and more importantly, innovative, which is rare when it comes to horror films. If it wasn’t for the ending I’d have easily given this film or 9 or a 10.

The Babadook is probably my favourite modern horror film. I find the premise of it terrifying and the Babadook itself is a really scary creation that's used extremely well throughout the film. I think what makes this film so scary for me is the fact that there's not a lot in the way of cheap scares, there's really only one (which also serves as the weakest part of the film for me) in which you see the Babadook's face, which is admittedly scary as hell but I would have preferred it to be unseen and shrouded in the shadows, imagination is the scariest monster of all and the most unsettling moments in the film for me are the parts when the Babadook is just out of sight or, when we see things from his perspective.
Amelia is a fascinating character and Essie Davis plays the multiple sides of the character really well and in a grounded fashion, even when she's possessed/psychotic, she's really sympathetic and you just want to see her pull through. I loved the subtext within the film and I like the open ended nature of the film. There's a lot of evidence for the monster being real and a lot of evidence that it isn't. It's up to the audience to decide and that aspect of the narrative is done really well.
The mark of a good horror film is when it doesn't lose any of it's fear factor on repeat viewings, this is the second time I've seen this film and I found it just as unsettling as the first time I watched it.
This film deserves to be considered a classic.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
In a sea of horror films desperate to be the next Halloween, ANOES stood apart from it's contempories in 1984. It's a deceptively smart film with an amazing concept and a great boogeyman in the form of Freddie Krueger.
The dream sequences are creative and eerie (the first time you seen Freddie in the alleyway with the long arms is a moment that I've always considered incredibly unsettling) and I like how the film flitters between dreams and reality almost seamlessly. I also quite like how most of the deaths are simple in their execution, something that was lost in the sequels in favour of outlandish and drawn out death scenes.
I think some elements of the film has aged somewhat but I still think it's still an entertaining horror film that's also incredibly creative.

Night Fourteen - A Nightmare on Elm Street

Comparing this to the original Friday the 13th it is leaps and bounds above it. They don't even deserve to be in the same sentence together. Both have made two of the most well known and famous horror film franchises known to man but ANOES is just something else compared to the dreadful first entry of Friday the 13th.
I found the film very compelling right from the initial first scene and throughout. What I liked about the film is that they didn't drag the film out and add unnecessary scenes in which I think some horrors can do a lot of the time just to make some more filler. I like how the film tricked the viewer into initially thinking that Tina would play the final girl role as she was given the opening scene and was the main focus for the first twenty minutes but her gruesome and gory death was such a satisfying twist. I think taking into account that the film was produced in the 1980s and on such a low budget I have to say kudos to the creators for the special effects.
Nancy has to be one of my favourite final girl characters also. I think the actress who played her was really convincing and I loved her and Glen's relationship. I was kind of hoping Glen would survive but his ever so pleasing death scene doesn't make me mad at the producers. Nancy's dreams were terrifying also and I liked the boundaries the film set between the make believe and the reality. I think this sort of slasher is different from all the rest and stands out most are usually just psychopathic killers wielding a knife but Freddy is so much more sinister and a real icon in the horror movie world. The boundaries are occasionally crossed also which combines the two worlds together but also focuses on the reality of how scary nightmares sometimes are.
The dreams were kind of scary but I do wish they would've lasted longer the majority of them were very quick and we didn't see much build up or suspense brought in. Tina's death being the only one with some sort of scale suspense behind it. Considering there was only three death scenes in the entire movie also this would've been very easy for the producers to do as it wouldn't have felt repetitive.
The backstory regarding why Freddy was preying on the likes of Nancy etc was such a fitting, creepy and totally believable concept. Glen's death scene and the gory nature of it as the blood filled his bedroom is very memorable and I will look forward to watching it again in the future.
The final scene in some ways is brilliant but also largely confusing to the viewer I think. Nancy pulling Freddy into the real world was the brilliant combination of the make believe and the reality combining and her final chase scene with the booby traps going off was so suspenseful and gripping! However despite this amazing final chase scene I do find the ending somewhat confusing because even though Nancy's mum is supposedly dead she comes back alive and even though Freddy supposedly can't get to Nancy he manages to trap her and her dead friends in the car? I just found it confusing because it didn't make it clear if she was dreaming or whether or not they were still in the real world.

The Babadook
Rating - 6/10
I didn't really enjoy this film to be quite honest, even though the acting was amazing(reason why I rated it more than 5). It didn't really find it scary at all. It was interesting in times like the kid pushing the girl and the mum seeing the monster. I can see why it's popular but it's not for me.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I've never really liked this film and rewatching it hasn't changed my opinion, I've always respected it's cultural impact though and the fact that it's one of the forefathers of modern horror films. I find the history of it and it's status as one of the first 'video nasties' to be more interesting than the film itself, although I do like some of the choices in the film such as limiting the gore in favour of creating a very tense atmosphere.
It is a classic film although I don't care for it all that much.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:
8/10:
TCM creates a really eerie, nightmarish atmosphere and maintains it well. As I've seen said in reviews elsewhere, the events of the movie really do start to feel like a particularly vivid nightmare. I can imagine it being even creepier at the time of the release. Leatherface specifically is one of my favourite movie killers, he really is the stuff of really bad dreams with his skin-mask and blood-stained apron.
Another thing I like about this movie is that it's not excessively gory. It's violent, but they don't use that as a reason to have blood and guts flying all over the place. It's proof that a movie can be unnerving because of the dark story and the atmosphere without OTT gore. But yes, it's still rather violent (as you'd expect a film with Chainsaw Massacre in the title to be), but it's a more restrained sort.
The reveal of the gas station attendant as one of the family particularly works well to set you on edge, the whole idea of being in danger and apparently finding rescue, only for that rescue to really be part of the danger, is one of my fears so that aspect in particular really creeped me out.
The final shot of Leatherface swinging the chainsaw around in the air as Sally gets away (laughing hysterically) remains one of my favourite moments, it's a memorable and striking way to end the movie.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
8/10
This movie is extremely scary - disturbing, in fact. I really have a weird relationship with it - I hate it obviously because it's so scary but I love it at the same time. The score is truly terrifying (what an animal would hear in a slaughterhouse</3) and the setting is very very creepy. Leatherface is definitely the scariest movie villain in my opinion, there's just something about him which is so sinister and disturbing - maybe the fact he's a child in an adult's body killing people bc he's scared of them maybe. The entire climax is extremely disturbing and you feel like you're in a nightmare in my honest opinion. Sally slowing moving from average girl to mentally disturbed hysterical in the ending scene (which is one of the most iconic scenes in cinema, I think) is very well done and compelling. The other teens aren't developed that much, but their deaths are extremely terrifying. The only reason this movie loses marks is because it's obviously aged from 1974 so isn't as entertaining for me as I guess it would be for people in the 70s - but it is definitely one of the scariest horror films ever made.

A nightmare on elm Street (1984)
Rating - 10/10
Another classic film from Wes Craven.I enjoyed this movie throughout and the characters were amazing too. I didn't know Glenn was Johnny Depp wow Johnny Depp was hot in his younger days(can't say the same now). It looked like Tina was going to the final girl but it was actually Heather who did an amazing job at acting. The killing in your dreams is actually a good idea because it's quite scary tbh. It made me jump a few times and "1 2 freddie's coming for you" is so creepy. Glenn's death scene was the best scene of the movie.

Night Fifteen - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/07/TheTexasChainSawMassacre-poster.jpg
So it isn't that I don't like old horror movies! It's just that Black Christmas and Friday the 13th are a pile of wank! This much like ANOES is revolutionary in the horror movie film industry and a classic which I would highly recommend to any horror fans especially those with a taste for slashers!
The film is so disturbing right from the opening, the grave digging and the dead bodies inserted onto one another on top of the headstone was so spine chilling. I definitely think that this is the scariest of any slasher film out there and Leatherface is such a weird creature and villain like no other. The hitchhiker was a good way to ease viewers into the film and allow them to get a grasp at what the film was about. The actor who played him was so good at playing a complete nut job! It was such a nice foreboding effect on the later tragedies the group would face. The film doesn't waste no time really getting involved and there is always this grim and macabre atmosphere surrounding nearly every scene.
The characters did fall into slight horror movie cliches I guess and we didn't really no any of them apart from Sally and Franklin so I guess that is one gripe I do have with the film. Sally is an okay final girl but unlike most final girls I don't think she is as easy to connect with as we don't really know her backstory or her at all till the last thirty minutes of the film. The character of Franklin is also incredibly infuriating and an annoyance I think. I also got the feeling that Sally would tend to agree with me :hehe:
Leatherface is a great horror movie villain though and such a disturbing one. The concept that he wears his victims skin as a mask is disturbing enough but his appearance and the fact he is mute furthermore adds to this to this disturbing character he is. The kill scenes are also rather different to each other and don't follow a boring pattern which I myself find as a viewer more interesting.
The final twist with the gas station assistant and the hitchhiker being Leatehrface's brothers is just a concept I never even thought of. The gas station assistant seemed so caring and so the film took a surprising but such a brilliantly clever turn when he attacked Sally and drove her to the house only for the hitchhiker to also be revealed as the third brother. The ending was also quite a chilling one with Sally laughing almost hysterically as if she has lost her mind as Leatherface swipes his chainsaw back and forth.
Overall - 8/10
It's a brilliant horror film what revolutionised but the characters let it down for me unfortunately
