The Crazies:
9.5/10
The Crazies isn't just one of my favourite horror movies, it's one of my very favourite movies in general. I've absolutely loved it ever since I first saw it a few years ago and I can't see myself ever growing tired of it.
I'm a sucker for a good virus outbreak movie, and this is better than good. The nature of the virus itself is terrifying, just the idea of normal, decent people turning into homicidal maniacs and slaughtering their loved ones and strangers alike is a truly scary prospect (a loving father killing his wife and son in a house fire, for example). An added scare factor is that it's not really a matter of catching the virus from others, if you've been drinking the town water then there's a good chance you're a timebomb waiting to go off already (as we saw with Russell). It's not a zombie movie exactly, but it's a really fresh take on that whole scenario. The shots of families being separated by the army (and in cases, killed) is really effective in building the dark, bleak atmosphere that the movie maintains.
The scene with the infected school principle violently killing patients strapped down to stretchers is probably the most disturbing, frightening sequence in the movie, I still remember how freaked out I was the first time I saw it. The brutal nature of the scene combined with the striking (and iconic, considering it made the posters) shot of the pitchfork dragging along the ground (leaving a blood trail) make for a really effective scene to demonstrate how morbid the situation is.
There are loads of other moments that work really well too, like the patient with his eyes and mouth stitched, the saw flying across the floor towards David (I always wince at that even though I know it's gonna be stopped), and Becca's sudden death that literally comes out of the blue (and which is doubly effective since she was a likeable character we came to know).
Russell's arc in particular is interesting, it sets him up as a victim of the virus a while before he really starts going off the deep end and when he does it seems obvious that David is going to have to kill him. This makes the moment when he regains control of himself and sacrifices his own life to save David and Judy all the more surprising and satisfying.
The shot of Ogden Marsh burning in the distance after the nuke is visually stunning and a stark reminder that everyone we've encountered throughout the movie bar David and Judy are dead, and it's a bittersweet conclusion to the movie (especially since it's suggested that the outbreak has reached further). I personally love bittersweet endings as opposed to outright happy / unhappy ones, ending a story like this on a bleak note but with a glimmer of hope strikes a good balance.
I also liked the news report during the credits (which I didn't previously know about and only do now because of wikipedia ) was a nice addition, especially with the news anchor being a real-life reporter in the US.
The concept of a virus causing chaos and a few survivors trying to escape is something that is done a lot and a lot of them can feel repetetive and tiresome. The Crazies, however, manages to be unsettling, compelling and consistently entertaining throughout (I also want to mention the brilliant score which really helped in adding to the atmosphere). It's also a rare case of a remake being better than the original (imo). While I enjoyed the original, this version drew me into the story, the and terror of the situation, on a much higher level.

The Crazies
I enjoyed this more than I expected, I don't think I'll remember much of it in a few weeks time but I found the film quite entertaining. Going into it I was expecting a zombie film so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the case. I liked the idea of a virus that turns people into killers but still allows them to retain some inteligence, it made for a more threatening enemy than just another mindless zombie. One of the main things I disliked about the film was that it's ending was quite weak and a bit stereotypical of the genre.
Overall though I enjoyed the film, it's not a classic by any means but it kept me entertained and it didn't outstay it's welcome.
7/10
The Amityville Horror
I found this film to be quite boring, other films at the time did what this film did better and there's very little that's memorable about it. I did like 'Jody' and I thought that the plotline had potential but it remained unexplored. There's not much I can really say about this one other than I just found it dull.

Night Sixteen - The Crazies
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8a/Crazies_ver2.jpg
I'm not overly fond of outbreak movies so I was skeptical about The Crazies. I think the concept behind it is so unique though for a modern horror considering the last ten/fifteen years of horror have been dominated by remakes of slashers or supernatural horrors. It's something out of the ordinary.
The film is interesting and there's a real eerie sort of fuel behind it. Everything about the film is eerie down to the bleak and abysmal town the virus is spreading in. One main criticism I do have with the film though is that I think it dips in and out of phases of being somewhat a little bit tedious where not match happens. It did make me occasionally lose interest in the film and the plot but luckily there would be a scene to drag me back into the film and feel more involved once again.
Quite a few of the scenes were built up with high levels of suspense which grabbed my attention again after sometimes I had felt bored with the film. Particularly the scene at the quarantine with the pitchfork. Becca was one of my favourite characters in the film and I loved her friendship and bond with Judy. Becca's death scene at the car wash came so unexpectedly but I think what the film did outside most horrors is made Becca's death scene fuelled by a sad and sorrowful gone rather than her just being blood and gore then being cast aside and forgotten about. Most of the death scenes were particularly enjoyable and well put together I felt. Even though I did enjoy the movie I don't think I will remember much of it say in a months time apart from the death scenes though.
I liked the small group of David, Judy, Russell and Becca I think the dynamic worked quite well together as they were quite contrasting characters. Russell was quite an unlikeable character who I couldn't warm to but I think he worked well in the dynamic of the group and he fitted in being there. Him realising that he was infected though was such a sad moment in the film and I did feel a lot of sympathy towards his character. The film shone again in its final scene with Judy and David making their way out of the town, it was so suspenseful and I really didn't expect both of them ti get way but I was glad they did. I like how the film ended with a possible chance of a sequel I'd the producers ever decide they want to do one.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Rating - 7/10
The movie had a slow start but then it got good the characters were amazing except for the wheel chair guy he was annoying as hell. When they picked up this random guy off the road I knew he was evil. I'm glad the killings were not straight away as well as some films do shove rush them which kills the movie. Leatherface wasn't scary because he looked harmless. The chase scene was amazing even though it did went on for long. I was shocked when she ran into the man who i thought would have helped her but he took her to Leatherface's house. The kind of dead grandpa was weird , the whole family was weird.

Rating - 10/10
I do love a outbreak movie and it was amazing to see it wasn't a Zombie one, infact I liked the idea of infected people turning into psychopaths. It was weird seeing Timothy playing a normal guy instead of a psychopath. He was amazing in this movie. The scene where the man had that garden tool was gruesome but amazing also where the lady stabbed David in the hand and he lifted his hand was another amazing scene. It didn't have a boring scene and that's why it's top rating.

Aw Mandy Lane, back when she was still a lesbian.
All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006)
8/10
I think this movie is really good.I It takes everything good about slashers and executes them perfectly, which already makes it amazing. However, the twist involving the 'final girl' actually being the killer is amazing and Mandy Lane is a true psychopath and I love it :flutter: The characters are really well done, they do fall into stereotypes but they're well crafted and you care about them - and the plot, although typical in all of these movies, holds strong for the duration of the film unlike others where it becomes a bit repetitive and dull. I also liked how the film was spread out over 2 days to shake it up a bit, other than the typical one night - it also adds to the groundwork of the plot and makes it feel like a better movie. I like Chloe - her chase scene was very well done and obviously I like Mandy Lane as well. Red and Jake were also pretty good and Emmett seemed like a plot device to me but I did like him. Overall, a very strong movie but I guess it falls kinda short of 10/10 because of the ending - I would have preferred it if Mandy Lane and Emmett had done the double suicide thing as it would have made the film darker instead of Mandy killing Emmett and then leaving with Garth pretending to be a survivor other than the killer.

Night Seventeen - The Amityville Horror
http://cdn.bleedingcool.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/51FK47HTSKL.jpg
While I do think the film has real moments of greatness what had me hooked. I think the film is quite heavily flawed in certain aspects and I certainly have mixed feelings about The Amityville Horror.
One aspect I do like about the film is the consistent odd situations going on throughout the film. Theirs lots off odd small things happening constantly right from the first ten minutes and throughout. The flies, the money going missing, the babysitter being locked in the door with no lock on and the black liquid oozing from the toilet it was all really spooky and got me curious. Oh and the soundtrack to the film was completely terrifying! I think it was really good how they kept the viewer interested and also linked back to the main plot. I do think the film contained some unnecessary and boring scenes having said that, I didn't feel the film needed to drag on so long at certain points it almost felt as if they were just throwing anything in because they perhaps needed to fill a certain time slot.
I felt the acting was outstanding from Margot Kidder throughout the film (Much like her portrayal of Barbs in Black Christmas) and I did enjoy seeing her whole family dynamic as a whole. I think it was interesting to have George as the stepfather to her children as his mean and unjust treatment of Amy perhaps mirrored the fact that he didn't feel connected with her because he wasn't her child. It was an interesting route to go down. The whole 'Jody' business with Amy was also deeply disturbing.
I think the film is heavily flawed on its lack of actual content. I actually don't think I was that scared at all about anything apart from the theme tune. I don think much actually happens for me to talk about and I do kind of wish they had done a lot more with it. The film's biggest flaw for me though is definitely the ending! So anticlimactic! It just didn't end with a bang like it should've done. Not even a fizzle in my opinion more of one cinder flying out. George's wild rampage could've been really scary but it lasted for a whole of about two minutes and the actual ending scene was just kind of boring and crap.

Dawn of The Dead (2004)
6/10
It's an okay film. I tried to watch the original once and it was so boring. This film takes the premise of the original and makes it entertaining. It cuts out the boring bits. The characters are a bit one dimensional and boring, Ana for a start is really puzzling how she goes from grieving girl to some weird leader type but whatever. The film had some entertaining points such as the entire climax with the buses but it also had some really WTF moments (such as the bloated woman being wheeled in and killed). I liked the subplot with Andy from the gun shop being stranded across the lot from the mall - but I hate the characters for risking Chips' life so much :fist: The film also has the heartbreaking and unnecessary (imo) subplot of Andre and Luda's baby being born and being a zombie and the whole zombie baby fiasco - I guess many zombie fans have pondered around the subject but I didn't like seeing the plot unfolding. The ending also makes the film feel like a waste of time with them getting to safety (what they've talked about for the whole film) and then its actually nowhere near safe and they would have been better off in the mall. So yeah, in summary, the movie is fun (sorta) and a lot more entertaining in the original. It's a shame the characters are just not developed and it feels too clean and random to be a good movie so that's why I'm giving it a 6/10.

Thursday 22nd October - Prom Night (1980)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/73/Prom_night_film_poster.jpg
This slasher movie follows a relentless killer who is out to avenge the death of a young girl who died after being bullied and teased by four of her classmates. Now high-school students, the guilt-ridden kids have kept their involvement a secret, but when they start being murdered, one by one, it's clear that someone knows the truth. Also coping with the past are members of the dead girl's family, most notably her prom-queen sister, Kim Hammond (Jamie Lee Curtis).
Prom Night (1980)
7/10
It's cheesy and fun. Jamie Lee Curtis is cute in the movie as Kim, she was very interesting. I like the back story (even though it's been done in like every 80s slasher film) of young Robin being killed by Wendy, Jude, Kelly and Nick - it certainly gives the film it's driving force. I don't know what to say about the characters, Wendy is a good bitch but that's about it. Alex is also quite root worthy. There's not much to say about the film other than the actual prom itself. Wendy's chase scene is of course iconic and almost beats Helen Shivers' in I Know What You Did Last Scene as the best chase scene in a slasher film (in my opinion) and of course Wendy almost gets away before being killed </3 The scene in the van also makes me scream with Jude being stabbed with the mirror thing when the killer appears at the back of the van and then Slick gets killed with the van going over the hill thing (not screaming in a horrified way btw nnn). I think the finale is very good and I think Alex being the killer works well - especially with Kim being conflicted at the end and holding the dead Alex whilst Nick watches her. I like the subplot with Murch and the police believing he was responsible for Robin's death/the killings - it added some eeriness to the film. It drops marks because the characters are bland, I think it's very cheesy and it's not very interesting until it's last 20/30 minutes so that's why it gets a 7/10 from me.

Prom Night (1980)
6/10
One of the many slasher films to grace our screens following the success of John Carpenter's Halloween in 1978. This came out in 1980, amongst the golden era of 80's slasher films alongside Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday To Me, The Burning, etc.
When I first saw this film back in Halloween 2009, I really liked it and it was definitely one of my favourite 80's slashers, and still is. However, having re-watched it for the first time last week, it's not as good as I remembered it to be. The film is basically about a group of kids playing hide and seek in an abandoned school, and a girl ends up getting killed whilst interrupting the game. Six years later, and the kids are all grown up and getting ready for Prom Night. However, they are stalked by a masked killer picking them off one by one for revenge.
The film is very slow, I must admit. Apart from the opening scene where the girl falls out of a window and dies and the obscene phone calls in the beginning to all of the kids responsible, there's about over a good hour where nothing (no kills) absolutely happens, it's just the characters at school and then later them getting ready for Prom. The film doesn't get good until the last 20 minutes where all the kills begin taking place. The killer is quite simple, he wears a ski mask and the kills are okay. The killer always seems to make these strange creepy noises whilst he's killing the victims which mirror the obscene phone calls they all received earlier. One thing I love about this movie is that it has one of the best chase scenes in a horror/slasher movie. Wendy's chase scene. It's about 8 minutes long and it's brilliant and by far my favourite part of the film. Wendy's your typical bitch, but she's one of those that you can't help but love and end up rooting for during her chase scene and when she ends up getting axed </3.
I've rambled on quite a bit about this film, so I'll stop there, but overall it's a watchable slasher film and it has its moments, but it's not one of the best imo. It has Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis though <3 and the film has a brilliant 80's cheesy vibe to it, which is very nostalgic and adds to the film.

Night Eighteen - All The Boys Love Mandy Lane
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/19/Boys_love_lane.jpg
I honestly think out of slasher movies from the noughties this is one of the best. It isn't just a mediocre remake of a slasher like most have been from that era (Black Xmas, House of Wax, Prom Night and so on) but actually I think it holds up quite strong in an era when new slasher films were in drastic decline.
One of the initial scenes in the film with the boy who fancies Mandy jumping into the pool but snapping his neck was so brutal and gory but I found it so pleasing. The deep Crimson blood just filling the pool as Mandy looked at Emmett it was so effective and symbolic and drew my attention into the film instantly. Unfortunately for the film for me it does go through a bit of a tedious patch for roughly fifteen/twenty minutes when the group are travelling down to where they are staying but I can't stay that annoyed because I think the film makes up for it later.
The group on a whole I liked. I found the female characters much more easier to get to terms with and I liked that they weren't one dimensional. Chloe and Marilyn came across as your typical sort of slut and bitch characters but they had so many layers to them such as Marilyn's insecurities over her weight and Chloe's loss of self esteem. The boys in the group weren't bad characters also for a slasher and didn't just fall into your typical slasher cliche roles. Mandy of course being the titular character was always going to be the main focus and I did really like her character, particularly her relationship with ranch hand Garth.
Emmett being the killer was believable and interesting. The actor who portrayed him was fantastic I thought at playing this genuine loony on the seek for revenge for those who outcast him due to the accident he caused at the start of the film. The killings were also really brutal and gory! Marilyn's in particular was toe curling as her jaw was snapped with the shotgun, all the deaths were different and were built up with great suspense I felt.
Mandy portraying both the final girl role and the killer was such a shocking yet phenomenal twist. Her calling Chloe over so innocently before stabbing her in the chest was so brutal and literally made my jaw drop in shock! Mandy was the true psychopath and not Emmett and that was shown through her turning on Emmett after their plan and deciding to add her to her death toll. An amazing twist and an amazing ending.

I found this to be the worst film we've watched so far, it's a complete bore to watch and it's just a pale imitation of Halloween without any of it's ingenuity or impact. I can't tell you the characters names because I didn't care to learn them, I was just waiting for them all to die so the film would end. Complete trash.

ORPHAN
Orphan has (at least in my mind) one of the best twists in modern horror, I can't imagine many caught on to Esther's secret. Vera Farmiga and Isabelle Fuhrman are by far the stand out performances here but we'll supported by Peter Sarsgaard and Aryana Engineer in her debut role. The only person in the film I felt that dropped the ball was terminally irritating Jimmy Bennett playing the jealous son, one scene in perticular when he shot a pigeon with a sling shot and Esther had to put it out of its misery and he acts disgusted with her when the bird's injury was his fault, to a degree this made me root for Esther.
https://38.media.tumblr.com/75412a37b250ade8a04a42b80b49e7fe/tumblr_nq0t63qJAp1snusg4o1_500.gif
The scenes towards the end are very creepy and shot beautifully and once Esther's full psychosis is discovered and her dark secret revealed with a wow I think the movie cranks it up just enough as to not make its big finale become cartoony. I adored the crazy UV painting scene especially!
So long as you go into Orphan with an open mind I think it is very enjoyable and well made.

Night Nineteen - The Conjuring
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/Conjuring_poster.jpg
Wow! This film is phenomenal and probably the best film released after 2010 I've watched! It was fast paced, compelling and terrifying. I reckon this film could be one I would watch over and over again in the future and for me to do that it has to be a film I am very passionate about. I throughly enjoyed this from the start and throughout.
The opening scene first of all was a brilliant choice as it grabbed the viewers attention and Annabelle the doll itself is creepy as ****. I think it was a really good device and way to make the viewers grasp what the film was about and it got me excited to see what was coming later on in the film. I must watch Annabelle in the future, if the opening scene is anything to go by. The film maintained these malevolent mishaps throughout and each one made me jump and got me more and more intrigued into the film. The dogs death, the clocks freezing, Rory in the mirror... All made me interested into what the film was about and the producers and the directors didn't once include one boring segment in the film. I think what's even more sinister about the film is the fact that the Warrens and the family who were being haunted were real people and it made me even more wary of the film.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson both portrayed their roles as the Warrens fantastically throughout. Vera was so convincing during many of her scenes including the one where she fell to the cellar that I actually felt I was there with her feeling those exact emotions she was going through. I loved how the film was different to your typical 'haunted house' film and the induction of the Warrens made this film for me. The Warrens made this film so much more than it would've been if they'd have gone down the traditional route of just including a family being haunted. Their background was intriguing particularly Lorraine's as she seemed to be emotionally scarred from her previous experiences.
The backstory of the house was flawless and one of my favourite backstorys in a film. The deceased witch taking her revenge out on women and making them brutally murder their children was spine chilling and I think that Lili Taylor was played Carolyn was excellent at playing the 'before' and 'after' side of Carolyn after she was demonised by the figure. I think all the acting throughout the film was spectacular though especially from the two young girls.
The ending was perfect for me and also spine chilling. Lorraine and Ed's daughter seeing the witch brushing Annabelle's hair (which was foreshadowed by her own mum brushing her hair earlier on in the film) was so scary! Lorraine and Ed's relationship in the film was another point I loved their true care for one another was a lovely point in the film. Seeing Carolyn be possessed and attempt to kill her daughters was a real turning point in the film and actually really scary. Lorraine getting the demon out of her was such an empathy fuelled moment in the film and I think the ending was perfect with the music box playing.

Wolf Creek (2005)
9/10
I saw this fully for the first time two weeks ago and I LOVED IT!. By far one of my favourite modern horror films. It's one of those films that leave you mentally scared and it sticks with you for quite a while after watching. I was on the edge of my seat when I watched it. It does everything a horror film should do imo. I loved the characters. Mick Taylor made a brilliant villain, albeit quite a creepy one too. I also loved how the unexpected one of the three ends up being the survivor. At first, you'd think Liz would make it as she has that final girl personality about her, but she ends up getting killed first </3. Then you find out Kristy makes it to the morning alive, and she's close yet so far and you'd think she'll live but she ends up getting killed. Then you get Ben (who we all thought was dead as he was virtually non existent for the last 40 minutes) and he ends up getting away and surviving.
Another thing I love about the film is that the first half or so is pretty much centered around the main three characters (Liz, Kirsty, and Ben) and you get to know them which is brilliant character development and makes you feel really sorry and sympathetic towards them, especially when Kristy get tortured or when Liz gets killed for example. It makes you imagine yourself in that position. There are a few uncomfortable scenes which add to the overall tense and eerie atmosphere of the film. The one in particular is where Mick is trying to rape and torture Kristy whilst Liz is hiding and watching. And the other is where he kills Liz and he chops 3 of her fingers off in one swipe and then stabs her in the spine and you can hear her spine crack </3. There was this one scene where she's viewing videos from other victims and she finds out that Mick has done the same to other people in similar circumstances they were in (i.e helping them with their car and giving them drugged water) which I found really creepy yet gripping at the same time.
I also find the background of the film quite interesting. It's based/inspired on/by true events and the serial killer Ivan Milat who committed numerous murders, called the Backpacker Murders in Australia during the late 80s/early 90s.

If you love Survivor or Big Brother, watch this film called ‘Circle’
Short Premise is that 50 people wake up in a dark room and every two minutes or so someone has to die through an anonymous vote. If you love either of those shows you won’t be disappointed.
It was really good, it explored a lot of different viewpoints and everything was subjective i.e. it's up to us as the viewer to decide who is villainous, who is heroic, who to root for etc. Definitely would recommend it to you all. It's more of a psychological horror than a full on 'guts and gore' type thing, but it's definitely quite eerie and worth a watch.

Night Twenty - Dawn Of The Dead
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/16/Dawn_of_the_Dead_2004_movie.jpg
I'm not overly fond of zombie movies and usually think they are the weakest sub-genre of horror. However, Dawn Of The Dead pleasantly surprised me and was a lot better than I anticipated. I found it fast paced and entertaining sure it is flawed in parts but overall I definitely think it's worth a watch.
Some of the scenes do seem a little repetitive at points as there's a lot of blood and gore with numerous zombies dying but I did enjoy those scenes with the protagonists narrowly escaping death. They had great tension and made me jump. The opening scene for me is one of the strongest in the film as Anna's life in the speed of a minute changes from her being so happy to her world crumbling right in front of her. Anna of course as the lead character is the strongest of the group and I do suppose most of the characters are one dimensional (particularly the ones who ended up coming in later on in the film) but I did like the pact mentality and bond the group shared. Anna and Michael are clearly the strongest characters in the film and I loved their relationship together.
One of the films major flaws is that it doesn't really have a story behind it. All we know is that zombies are invading the earth and people are speculating it's because hell is full. We don't know why the zombies came and how they came and why they are doing what they're doing. I definitely think the producers would've been wiser coming up with a backstory to drive the film because otherwise for me I don't know it's just a little transparent.
What the film does do which most horror films don't have is that the film contains so,e absolutely heartbreaking scenes. Michael leaving himself behind at the end before shooting himself, the father being killed because he was bitten and Luda's baby being a zombie when born all really made me feel so sympathetic for the characters. It did strike a chord and make me think of what I would do in such a harrowing situation as the characters in the film were faced with, they were basically waiting to die or be killed. I think these sad scenes made the film stand out from other zombie movies.
Like I say a lot of the scenes are mainly zombies being killed with blood and gore but I really liked the last twenty minutes of the film with the protagonists escaping to another island. Again the last scene was so sad.

Orphan
I enjoyed it and thought that the twist was pretty good. I think I enjoyed the first half of the film more so than the second as I think it lost it's way when you found out the truth about Esther as the director began to rely on cliches a bit too much.

Wolf Creek
I wasn't a fan, it was just a parade of gore and torture with little else in between. I didn't find it entertaining or scary, I just found it all to be boring and quite tasteless.

When a Stranger Calls
God this one was hard work, it wasn't scary, well acted or written. It was just a plain by the numbers thriller that's riddled with cliches. The film is on the short side of things but it still managed to drag horribly. I think this is the worst film we've watched so far.

The ONLY horror film to ever have freaked me out. It even inspired my username on here :hee: It's a realistic film because it could happen to you, that's what makes it so scary. The use of sounds in this movie are amazing (the music player, the thuds, etc.). Everything about it makes it the perfect horror film imo. The only reason i'm going to give it a 9 instead of a 10 is because I thought the ending was a bit lacking in something.

The Strangers
I borrowed this movie from a friend after hearing numerous reports it was terrifying and one of the best home invasion horrors around, I watched it with an open mind but high expectations since people were raving about it.
It's safe to say The Strangers was one of the biggest dissapointments for me, I found it formulatic, boring and borderline comical when it is meant to be scary - I never even found the situation scary or creepy at all, none of the masked intruders were creepy, I found them dull and never cared why they decided the kill Steve Tylers kid or the other dude.
I find people claiming the movie was so well done and surprising yet two much better written and acted movies following the home invasion formula came out one year earlier - Vacancy and Inside.
If I am being generous, Liv Tyler was ok but she never once made me care if she died or not.

Wolf Creek:
8/10
Wolf Creek is so creepy because it's something you hear about and something you can imagine happening in some horrible scenario, backpacking through unfamiliar territory and finding yourself in a terrifying situation.
What happens to the girls is brutal and senseless, and all the more scary because the only reason it happened to them was because they happened to be there and got themselves caught in a psychopath's crosshairs. What's worse is how they were never found (agan, very true to life since many possibly-murdered people have just vanished) and how their murderer got away with everything.
It's bleak, depressing, and very effective as a scary movie grounded in reality (a very macabre aspect of reality).
The Strangers:
8.5/10
So, the premise of this movie is one of my biggest fears; malevolent intruders getting into your home with the intention of doing you harm. Being at home with the doors locked is when you're supposed to feel the most safe so the idea of the danger being within those walls is truly terrifying. And, like with Wolf Creek, it's a terrifying scenario that could very well happen.
Something I like about The Strangers is how it slowly generates tension and unease throughout the movie, I personally expected the couple to be captured earlier and most of the movie to be them being tortured / fighting for their lives. Most movies of this kind would go for that option so it was a nice move for this one to dedicate most of the movie to keeping the titular Strangers in the shadows, circling their pray, and to save the main attacks for the climax. This is a movie built on atmosphere rather than violence, and it's all the more effective for it.
I absolutely loved how the intruders would silently enter scenes in the background (sometimes with no musical cue to alert us to the danger). Very eerie (and the sort of thing I don't doubt would have people home alone constantly checking behind them).
The Strangers themselves are some of the most unsettling, nightmarish antagonists I've seen in a movie. Their masks are super-creepy, their whole MO of appearing and vanishing into the shadows is very effective in keeping you on edge and their motive (or lack of) for the attack ("Because you were home") is just downright horrifying. No rhyme or reason, these people are simply being hunted because they answered their door.
Because of all this, I think keeping their faces hidden even when they take off their masks is a good move. What makes them so scary is that we know nothing about them, revealing their faces would diminish that a little.
I think this is probably a marmite movie because some may feel that not a lot happens, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. One little thing that I didn't love was the final jump scare, I've said before in other reviews that I think it's an unnecessary and sort of cheap trope. But that doesn't spoil the rest of the movie for me.

Final Destination 3 (2006)
8/10
I think this movie is almost certainly the best in the Final Destination series. The premonition is definitely my favorite with the rollercoaster and the derailment scene is definitely HARROWING in it's true form. I like the characters - Wendy is a great lead and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is flawfree<3 Kevin is okay, I liked how they switched it up with Wendy and Kevin being the random two from the friendship group to survive the premonition. Ashley and Ashlynn's death in the tanning beds is definitely the most HARROWING scene in the entire franchise and definitely the most creative and horrific death. I like the twist with Wendy's sister being the unseen person who fell from the rollercoaster in the premonition. I also liked Ian turning into a villain kind of and the whole climax at the fair is very interesting. I LOVED the ending, definitely probably the best ending in the franchise also (besides the fifth one because of that amazing twist<3) The only grope Ii have with the film is that besides Wendy and Kevin - none of the characters are even developed and are just sitting ducks. Even Julie whose meant to be the third 'main character' is hardly developed. So yeah, that's why the score is 8/10.

Saturday 24th October – Wolf Creek (2005)
5/10
Wolf Creek
I wasn't a fan, it was just a parade of gore and torture with little else in between. I didn't find it entertaining or scary, I just found it all to be boring and quite tasteless.

I'm sorry, but you're both wrong. :nono:

I watched Wolf Creek yesterday :hee:
Wolf Creek
8/10 - The best Australian film i've seen, tbh. It had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe I thought. The characters were all developed really well and overall it was a good film with some good gore ;)
Final Destination 3
9/10 - My fav FD film, it's quite comical and I wouldn't really class it as a horror but it's really good and entertaining, I've literally watched it like 20 times, it doesn't get boring.
Wednesday 28th October - Candyman (1992)
http://cdn8.nflximg.net/images/4694/2104694.jpg
Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago's Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman's description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.

A decades old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine's Day, turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer's order and people start turning up dead.

Final Destination 3
It's kind of fun I guess but the truth is you can just watch the deaths on youtube and ignore everything else and you won't miss out. FD3 has inventive death scenes and little else.
4/10
Candyman
At first glance it's very much a 'Friday the 13th' to Nightmare on Elm Street's 'Halloween' but, unlike Friday the 13th, Candyman manages to become something unique and not just a pastiche of what came before. It's more than just a simple slasher and I appreciated the focus on storytelling over pure gore.
I think, like most horror films, it does lose it's way in the third act. Aside from that though, I enjoyed Candyman and thought it was pretty decent film.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)
7/10
I think this film is one of the better 80s slashers. It's engaging and fun with a good backstory with Harry Warden and the miners being trapped underground. Valentine's Bluff is a good setting, the launderette kill<33 The finale is a really cool setting with the teenagers going into the mine and it's very tense. The Miner was a really freaky killer and the kills are all inventive. Axel being the killer and being the son of the supervisor whom Harry Warden killed was an amazing twist and I liked how they used Harry Warden as a red herring (even though most slashers did used a maniac escaped from an asylum as a red herring). Yeah I liked Sarah but the film came off cheesy in some parts and the cast is really big which means hardly anyone gets developed which is why I'm scoring this film a 7.
Friday 30th October - Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981)

On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith's Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims. In Halloween II (1981), Michael continues his pursuit of the survivors of his killing spree who are transferred to Haddonfield General Hospital.
Halloween (1978)
9/10
One of the best horror films ever made in my honest opinion. John Carpenter pulls this off with genius fashion. Michael Myers is truly terrifying and definitely my favourite horror movie icon. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Laurie Strode brilliantly and you really root for Laurie which sets this films above the rest as I feel a weak point in the horror genre is actually getting you to root for the final girls. I liked how they also set up Annie as a secondary final girl only to make her the first victim. PJ Soles also provides some brilliant light relief as Lynda - and of course Dr Samuel Loomis is amazing<3 Yeah, there's not much I can say about this film other than that it's certainly miles ahead of films of its time and the only thing that really feels dated is the girl's dialog in some places and the effects (Michael smashing the window with the wrench early on in the movie for example). So yeah, it only misses out on a point because of it's dated aspects and also it features 2 dog deaths :fist:.
Halloween II (1981)
8/10
This is actually an amazing sequel and I think underrated by fans. A lot of sequels seem to move on as if the original never happened besides the fact the killer is still included but this one follows on directly and just feels like an extended finale to the original film - making it fun throughout. It was good to see the town's reaction to the events of the first film but a major gripe with the film is how Laurie is barely used despite all the events going on being because of her - but I guess the filmmakers thought we already knew about Laurie from the first film and that's why they decided to only include her for chase scenes. I find the hospital very eerie and I don't really understand the problem people have with it being so empty - it's established it's a small town and it's the dead shift with only a few workers working. I think the kills were a lot more upscale than the first film which makes it more entertaining - Karen's face being burned off in the hydrotherapy pool was good but yeah I guess this film feels more like a standard slasher film whereas the first film was a masterpiece which is why it scores only 8 instead of 10. Also they hardly use Laurie except for the final 20 minutes.

Halloween
One of the grandfathers of Modern Horror, Halloween is an effective horror film first and a slasher second. The character of Micheal Myers is used really well, scenes when you see him watching Laurie from outside and stalking his prey are incredibly eerie. I like that his motives, in this film at least, are never mentioned. He's just a killer and like Laurie said, he's a boogeyman. I think the only problem with this film is that it's showing it's age which is understandable.
9/10
Halloween 2
Halloween 2 is when it all went wrong. I liked Micheal Myers more when he was a random psychopath, I think giving him a motive and a potential supernatural twist weakened the effectiveness of the character. I think the story ultimately feels extraneous and not needed. I think the fact that the characters, aside from Loomis and Laurie, are all incredibly weak when the cast of the first film was way stronger. It's basically like watching a bunch of extras getting killed off, you don't care and it's all pointless.
I also felt like the film disregarded the trendsetting of the original and instead decided to follow the trends of other slashers at the time by injecting more gore and overly elaborate kills into the proceedings when neither are needed.
I like to pretend that Halloween is a stand alone film for a reason.

I'm watching both Halloween and Halloween 2 tonight (as I wanted to save them for Halloween night), so I'll post my review tomorrow, if that's okay.
I guess I'll do the rankdown of scores tomorrow then.
This chick is awaiting some Halloween reviews before she does the rank down.

Halloween (1978)
10/10
My favourite horror film. A true masterpiece by John Carpenter himself. Very atmospheric and creepy. Brilliant characters. Michael Myers at his best. His heavy breathing, his head-tilting, his strength and the way he stalks add to the creepiness and overall tone of the film. I love how Halloween manages to be scary in such a subtle way without relying too much on the gore and blood like you get in more recent horror films. For a film over 35 years old, it still holds strong.
Halloween 2 (1981)
9/10
After re-watching the franchise I've decided this is my favourite sequel (4 being a close 2nd). This one takes place where the first one left off on the same night as the first film. I love the hospital setting in this film. Very unique setting and makes a great hospital slasher film. Michael again creepy as always and there's some brilliant death scenes in this one. I also love this film because of the chase scenes between Michael and Laurie. The hospital one and the car park one
I love watching this one after watching the first one as I like to think of them both as one big movie.
Thanks<3
If anyone wishes to submit any reviews for anything else could they please do so before tomorrow at 7PM. I'll do the rankdown then for definite.
Will.

TIBB'S HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN | THE RESULTS |
http://i.imgur.com/gEk2HNO.jpg
After 30 nights of watching, reviewing and scoring horror -we finally have a rank down of all the films we saw - right from the worst to the best rated. Some films at the start were probably luckier in gaining more scores than the ones at the end as more people were interested towards the beginning of the month - so there is some greats low down on the list that would have probably made the Top 10 had they been reviewed more. However, without further ado-
1 – Scream 2 (92 out of 110)
2- Scream (74 out of 80)
3- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (68.5 out of 90)
4- Urban Legend (67 out of 80)
5- The Descent (65.5 out of 70)
6- Scream 4 (57 out of 80)
7- The Babdook (53 out of 70)
8- The Crazies (52.5 out of 70)
9- I Know What You Did Last Summer (52 out of 90) and Sinister (52 out of 70)
10- House of Wax (51.5 out of 80)
11- A Nightmare on Elm Street (50.5 out of 60)
12- Scream 3 (49 out of 80)
13- Halloween (46 out of 50)
14- Friday the 13th (45 out of 90) and It Follows (45 out of 70)
15- Black Christmas (44 out of 70)

Halloween is way too low imo. That's a ground-breaking classic which changed the horror genre and the fact films such as Scream 3, IKWYDLS, The Descent, House of Wax, and Babadook are above it is just...wrong :worry:
Obviously, but it suffered because of when it was scheduled - as did most of the films in the second half.
Jason.
05-11-2015, 10:35 PM
Oh yeah, I didn't notice that. Some movies weren't watched by many people, which explains why the Screams have done well as they were all on within the first week - when the countdown was fresh and in its peak when everybody did it.
Jason.

I've really enjoyed this Cal. Even though I sorta gave up after the first half :worry: It's been good and I hope you do another one next year.

It might be a good idea to just do it for two weeks or something, there was definitely a drop off in reviews after the halfway point.
