When someone sings a song, (properly) they are not fighting or taking on anyone, nor should it ever be that way, they are simply telling a story, sharing their emotions. When someone sings a duet, it is the same, they are not "taking on" anyone they are sharing that story. The best vocal performances come from passion, deep within, not from conflict or competing with the next person, unless the song itself is about conflict.
