Kay Starr was a great singer, Avril and Rock and Roll Waltz was a great song. If you speak nicely to our ROB, she might even be able to find it for you to listen to. She's a magician, that girl.

I told you I was very old and now this thread has proved it. I had to go for the song which was No1 on my 18th and was therefore apparently 'my life theme' (god help me)!

It was the old weepie 'Tell Laura I Love Her' by Ricky Valance, which is actually very appropriate because my darling grandaughter is called Laura.

Personally, everytime this thread re-emerges it reminds me of my advanced stage of crumbliness. :bawling:

I have tried in vain to find out what was either the best selling '78' or Sheet music at that time. I do remember we had 78's of Mario Lanza and Nelson Eddy and Jeanette macDonald, as well as Fred Astaire singing 'Top Hat' which I played on my Nanny's Wind-up phonograph. You had to change the needles really often AND we had endless fun slowing them down and speeding them up.

The other alternative was of course sheet music. My sister and I snook into the church to play 'Theme for a Dream' (Cliff) on the organ.

Aaargh, I have become the sort of person Historians interview for archive material.....

Good grief, that was only last week wasn't it?

The good news for us really crumblies is that I have found a link which tells you what the number one was even in the Dark Ages.

Mine was

'Silver Dollar, Roll, Roll, Roll' by Eve Young and the Homesteaders.

The bad news is that I can't find a sample of it anywhere.

However, Eve was also responsible for those classic hits 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' and 'If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake!'

Rock On Eve!

If you are of pre-1952 vintage check your birthday number one (music sheet sales:blush:) here:
