I watched Goodnight Mommy last month. It was okay? It wasn't really what I was expecting but it's way better than The Babadook and It Follows (both of which are boring, overrated trash)

I just finished watching Funny Games.

It left me feeling annoyed and I hated the whole breaking the 'fourth wall' and talking to the camera thing, it wasn't needed at all for a film like this and it just took away from it.

The rewind scene after Ann shoots Peter ruined it for me but there was only ten minutes left so I just stuck with it and the ending wasn't any better either.

I feel this had potential but I didn't like the execution at all. Great performances from Naomi Watts and Tim Roth but that's about it really. The two villains were annoying as **** too.

6/10

I have seen Funny Games and I love home invasion so it was right up my street but I ended up kind of hating it, one scene in perticular ruined it for me.

I now know which scene and I agree.

It's really stupid that they cancelled it due to Rings not being well-received when they're both completely different films and not even part of the same sub-genre. I'd understand if it was something like the new Leatherface or Halloween not doing well as they appeal to the same people as F13th and they're all well-known, popular franchises that started around the same time.

I know it's such a dumb move, Rings never really had a good script - the part where the teacher was tricking students into watching it I quite liked but the main characters were boring and utterly stupid and the fact they turned the guy who was basically sacrificing innocent teens into a hero was a mess. The back story was simply so meh nobody cared.

Having read the F13 script it would have been soooo good, there were some amazing deaths and Jason was honestly scary again! and the character Sloane from the script alone would have been the new Sidney/Nancy/Laurie/Alice.

I felt kind of the same in all honesty when the story first broke a few years ago but if the leaked script is still the filming script it's honestly really good

The last horror movie I saw was Don't Hang Up. A little bit of a weird feel to it and not scary whatsoever IMO but a lot better than I was expecting anyway. I think it started out really strong in particular. It's much more on the thriller side than horror though (which I don't mind). I'd give it like a very solid 7 to 7.5.

- I've seen Pet. It's a little bit odd from what I can remember but not a bad movie. Not one I'd hype up or really recommend though. 6 or 6.5 max out of 10.

- I saw Last Shift recently and it was pretty good. I feel like I give everything a rating from like 7 to 8 for movies that I like but I'd give Last Shift a 7 for sure. It's just a little bit confusing at times despite being a very simple story/plot.

Still haven't seen Get Out :(

2 and 3 just weren't that interesting to me. It was the start of focusing on gore over storytelling as well as leaving massive plot holes so they could write sequels around filling the holes up. It was just lazy.

Yeah I guess the gore is instantly upped in the second but I still thought they stayed true to the original's greatness until the 4th one came along. Maybe because the original trilogy were all made by the same people and then the rest weren't.

I'm intrigued by the 8th one but the fact it's got nothing to do with the original series (it's a copycat instead of planned by John/Hoffman/Amanda/Dr Gordon) doesn't fill me with confidence.

Don't like the CGI heavy horror movies today. Also, not really a fan of the brutality and bloodiness of the Saw franchise. For me, horror is at its best when you don't see the monster (Alien, Blair Witch, etc). VHS and VHS were alright. #Randomthoughts

Yeah it's really disturbing. Besides the real animal slaughters (a pig shot and killed, a monkey decapitated, a muskrat graphically stabbed multiple times, a turtle de shelled and gutted, a snake chopped in half and a tarantula chopped up) there are rape scenes, dead babies, penis mutilation, you name it...horrid film.

I think Scream is the only horror franchise where all the films are pretty good?

Although that's probably because there's only four films, as opposed to most other franchises which have like eight, but even Scream 3 is pretty decent.

Cal.
10-08-2017, 09:33 PM
It's the most consistent franchise - but that's probably to do with the fact it had the same director and writer (with the exception of the third but it's plot was written by the same writer just the script was written by somebody else) plus the same main cast and same formula for every movie.

Lostie!

Scream 3 is trash. No good kills, an odd killer that made little sense, it took a step too far into comedy and the biggest crime - Sidney is barely in it. The scene where she has a dream and it's her mother is absolutely atrocious it is so out of context to the entire series.

No wonder Neve Campbell was so wary of accepting Scream 4 after that stinker.

Jamie89
11-08-2017, 05:19 PM
I agree about Scream 3 being the worst and the awful comedy/parody aspects of it (although I think that was because there was a huge controversy at the time over movie violence after Columbine (?) and they were made to re-write it to be like that, originally it was going to be much gorier/scarier), I don't think overall it's a bad film though, just no where near as good as the others. And I actually like the killer reveal and the climax to it, I think those are the best scenes and had it been a better film, or more like a Scream film overall, people might look on the story differently and more favourably?
Scream 4 is excellent though imo (still not as good as the first 2 but very close to them), I don't really get the criticism for it.

Cal.
12-08-2017, 10:12 AM
I mean Sidney not being in it much isn't their fault since Neve couldn't fully commit to it so they had to change the focus to Gale and Dewey and then give Jennifer Jolie a bigger role to still have a trio (and thank God they did!) but from watching clips of it now it's definitely a lot cornier than I remembered.

Scream 4 was great. Inventive kills and sequences and Jill being the killer  The self mutilation scene is great.

Cal.
12-08-2017, 10:14 AM

Olivia was yeah, in the original script she was a bit of a Regina George type, I believe Wes had that changed as he could not imagine Kirby's character being friends with a bitch and Kirby was his favourite character.

I'm still annoyed Scream 4 got such a bare bones DVD and Blu release. There were TV specials shown on MTV and E! about the movie and lots of media attention and interviews and none of the behine the scenes footage was added as an extra.

Kirby was also at one point a survivor after test screenings loved her but the studio wanted her dead to up the body count :/

Last two horror films I've seen:

The Houses October Built (2014) - 7/10 I liked it but still not the most action packed horror film, not that scary either

The Shining (1980) - 6/10 just not a big fan, very bored throughout most of it, not even close to being scary but I saw a few good things and that's why I even give it a 6

Older films in general are soooo overrated to me especially when it comes to horrors. I rarely like these movies from the 1980's & 90's that constantly get tons of praise. The ones that I do like, the older Friday the 13th's for example, are probably because I watched them as a kid lol and if I do watch it again now it feels nostalgic (I'm guessing this is typically why people like these older films). I understand liking them at the time but now they're outdated and outdone on so many levels with today's technology, newer ideas (or revamping the same ideas in a better way - maybe not always better tbf), improved acting/angles/visualization usually, etc.

But The Shining has always been praised as an all-time classic so finally deciding to watch it with some friends a few days ago, I was really disappointed with it.

Also, this thread reminded me I still need to see the 2nd Conjuring movie.

Yeah I was disappointed with The Shining when I watched it earlier this year for the first time

Not one I'd revisit

If anyone's interested, the Jeepers Creepers 3 trailer is out

Tc-bAR0_GOY

Surprised this even went ahead after it was put on hold for so long. Looks like it's getting a one-day limited release too, which given the director's past, doesn't surprise me.

I feel like people should kinda let the Victor Salva hate go, yeah of course what he did was vile and he should never be forgiven for what happened but for me it's strange how people are so outraged now but flocked to see Jeepers Creepers and it's sequel but now they are shunning JC3 because they won't support him...it doesn't make sense to me.

I'll watch JC3 proudly his past makes no difference my opinions of his work.

Saying that the trailer looks kinda bad.

(And saying that people should essentially ignore the fact he's a child molester just because he made a couple of cult horror films is messed up)

I agree the trailer doesn't look that good, seems really low-budget/direct-to-DVD. I also read that Trish only has a cameo role. I'll watch it when it's out online, but I can't say my expectations are high.

The Shining is a stunning Film imo. I'm a huge Kubrick fan though.
It's definitely worth multiple viewings. So much hidden stuff within it, even subliminal frames. There's a documentary called 'Room 237' that details and theorizes about many of the hidden elements.

Some people have even watched it in reverse. That's a bit much even for me though!

Watched 13 Sins last night and it's a must watch. Such an underrated, hidden gem. :clap1: It's way more of a thriller tbh but falls under horror too and I'm sure horror fans would enjoy it even though it's not a "scary" film whatsoever.

I really enjoyed the “IT” movie btw (watched it when it came out, forgot to review), it has some similarities to stranger things.

I’ve been slacking with my horrors lately. Can’t remember which conjuring I got up to and not really a fan of the insidious’s (think I mentioned this before)

And omg I still haven’t watched Jeepers Creepers 3. Everyone is saying it’s awful but I still want to watch. If anyone on here has watched it can you please leave a review, thanks
