Given that the majority of the forum are fans of the horror genre, I thought it would be cool to have a horror discussion thread where you can pretty much talk about the horror genre or any of your favourite horror films.

Last 'horror' movie I saw at cinema was The Forest and it was so bad

I've heard really crap reviews about the Forest. But then I wasn't really interested in seeing it in the first place. What's it about?

What would you do if you had a final destination esque premonition, on a plane let's say? Would you alert everyone and risk making a complete fool of yourself and possibly being sectioned in case it didnt come true, or would you try and convince everyone to get off the plane? (Or just get off quietly and not say anything)
The last horror movie I saw was Annabelleb at Halloween last year

A woman goes looking for her twin sister who has gone missing in a forest where people commit suicide and then she starts going insane herself whilst there. The story could have actually been good it was just craply made and there wasn't any real scary moments.

I just finished watching We Are What We Are and it was kinda boring ngl but the final ending scene was sooooo satisfying...
...when the girls ate their dad.
I also watched The Gift yesterday which I don't think is technically a horror film but it was really low key creepy and super twisted. I like films like that where the "bad guy" is human and it feels like it could actually happen none of the supernatural stuff scares me at all.

I love it, I think it's very underrated and has a really great cast.
If you like it it'd recommend Copycat, too. It's a psychological thriller with strong horror elements and stars Sigourney Weaver.

The Boy was really good but the twist at the end didn't feel necessary it just felt like they were trying to throw something out there for the sake of there being a twist

Has anyone ever seen The Relic? It's a 90's monster horror. I saw it when I was really young and remember enjoying it but it was pretty under the radar I think, not many people have heard of it. I'm tempted to watch it again to see if I'd still enjoy it now I'm older and if it's aged well or not.

Watched All The Boys Love Mandy Lane last night for the first time and I really enjoyed it. It's one I've been waiting to see for quite a bit now but I finally got around to it. I wasn't expecting that twist at the end but it was good. I also loved the feel and atmosphere of the film. It reminded me a lot of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
It also has Amber Heard as Mandy Lane - one of my favorite actresses.

I was pretty disappointed by this, I think the hype ruined it for me
I mean, it's a good film but idk there was just something missing, I was expecting a bit more from the ending and was left feeling like "Is that it?". I'll probably watch it again some time to see if my opinion changes but overall i'd give it a pretty solid 7/10 opposed to the 9 or 10 I was expecting.

That's why I wasn't keen when I first heard about it, and usually I'm not swayed by reviews but they've been so good and the way they've been describing it makes it sound like something I'd love, so I'm really excited about it now. I think also, with the general feeling about the original being overrated, it would make reviewers less inclined to talk this one up unless it really warranted it... maybe. I hope anyway

I'm unsure about Blair Witch. The reviews have been strong for it but, judging from the trailer, they've removed all the ambiguity of the original and that was the most interesting part of it.

I watched the trailer and it looks quite good actually. The film poster looks great too. It looks much more intense and action-packed than the original - nothing happened in the first one and it felt more like a bad documentary to me. I'll probably watch it now as it's out in 2 weeks. I tend to take reviews with a pinch of salt too because most of the films I end up enjoying tend to get bad reviews.

Halloween 3 is good if you look at it as a standalone 80s horror film and not part of a Michael Myers franchise otherwise it's weaker in comparisons to the films that do have Michael in.
I hope the new one is better than Rob Zombie's remakes, the fact that John Carpenter is directing / involved gives me some hope. But then the director of Halloween 2 (the original) is the same person who gave us the insult that is Halloween Resurrection. But then this is JC so I'm still a tad optimistic.

Lots of people are saying that John Carpenter hasn't been good for years so I'm hoping that writing for Michael again makes him more creative. He only did for Halloween 2 for the money and was actually the person who chose to make it more gory and he said he got drunk whenever he wrote for the script because he had no faith in the story due to planning the original to be a standalone. So yeah, I'm not sure whether he'll be good or not. The 30 year break will probably help him out.

You could kind of see it. As much as it's the second best film it doesn't really go anywhere and although setting it on the same night helps the feel, he didn't really do anything with any of the characters. Laurie spends like the whole time in a coma until the chase scene and none of the others are developed.

That's true. 3/4 of the film is just him picking off the hospital staff one by one and then it's the chase scene. The only thing we really learn is that she's his sister.

What do people think is the best era for horror movies?
Some of my favourite horrors come from the 70's/80's but I'd probably say the late 90's/early 00's resurgence that Scream started is my favourite era overall because there were so many great ones.

I'd say the early-80's (1981 in particular). Not only was the slasher subgenre at its peak but in general everything horror was top-notch - supernatural, ghost, zombie, vampires, creature features. I also love the cheesy atmosphere of 80s films.
Late-90's / post-Scream era would definitely be a close second, especially being a massive slasher fan and having a slew of teen horror films coming out one after the other (The Craft, Scream, IKWYDLS, Urban Legend, The Faculty, Halloween H20, Idle Hands, Disturbing Behaviour, Final Destination, Cherry Falls, Valentine etc). Plus I grew up when all these films came out so it's nostalgic for me. It was the last good period of horror really before the remakes took over the mid/late-00's and the supernatural craze taking over the 10's.

Halloween 3 is good if you look at it as a standalone 80s horror film and not part of a Michael Myers franchise otherwise it's weaker in comparisons to the films that do have Michael in.
Hmm I rewatched it last month and I found it ****e.
Also I'm torn on which I like more, Halloween 4 or H20.

Does anyone else think the BC remake is pretty cute?
It's a fun little popcorn flick if you don't compare it to the original as it pretty much destroyed whatever made that so unsettling and creepy by relying too much on the blood and gore and giving Billy a backstory.
I don't really take it seriously. The cast is fantastic

So I've been rewatching the original eight Friday the 13th movies over the past week as it's been a while. They really should've stopped after The Final Chapter imo as they began to go downhill from then on. Although I do enjoy Jason Lives and New Blood but they're not on par with the first four films. In general though I still think the franchise is kinda overrated. The Halloween franchise did it better >>>>

18-12-2016, 04:40 PM
One thing that doesn't help the F13th franchise is that it begins to get stale and repetitive after the first few sequels. I guess some people could say the same for Halloween but at least the Halloween franchise flows and made an effort to tie the sequels together with two different timelines instead of just having a bunch of teens in every film only to butcher them all off by the end and then bring in a new bunch the next sequel, none of which bear any relevance to the events of prior films. The continuity is a mess too. I'm just picky when it comes to things like that so it annoys me.
I've had dreams about Wrong Turn since I first watched it, the latest being last night. Just thought I'd let you all know.

F13th remake is still in development with no cast or confirmed plot.

Yes it's still going ahead, it'll be a lot more like the book according to bulmhouse writer Mike Flanagan. The books awful though, incredibly boring and the Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) character is reduced to a tiny role. Not chase scene for Helen either which imo if the best and most memorable part of IKWYDLS

The new TCM has been filmed and is in post-production, it's called Leatherface, it's a prequel about how it all started and stars Sam Strike who played the original Johnny Carter in Eastenders.

Same here but I'm really conflicted on the new Halloween movie? In a way I kinda don't want a new film and I'd like the franchise to be left alone so the number of bad films don't outnumber the number of good films. Plus idk what they would do with it as pretty much every timeline has had its closure (Laurie's ended in H20/Resurrection and the remake timeline ended in H2 and I don't think RZ would come back as he didn't even want a second film in the first place, plus it would be random if they went back to H4-6). I guess it could just be Michael stalking a bunch of random teens but idk.

Oh keep it then, Helen was the only good character.
I think it's a little too soon for a remake of IKWYDLS anyway. The original still holds up pretty well and it's only just been twenty years since it was made. I guess a modern version by today's standards would be cool with what they could do with it (similar to Scream/Scream 4) and I wouldn't mind if they remade it fixing all the flaws of the original (better characters, better lead and better reveal) but I'm not interested if they're going to drift away from the entire concept.

Quarantine is a good film, but it's pretty much a carbon copy of Rec and was only made to make some quick money. I prefer Rec though, as there's just something about it being in a foreign language that I love. There are some differences in the film however, so don't let that put you off. I didn't like Quarantine 2 lol, it was a massive step down from the first. Rec 2 is a pretty solid film as well, definitely worth a watch.

Unfortunate!
I'm a fan of the 2009 one tbh and it's getting close to 10 years since then so I was ready for another.

The F13th reboot will be looked at again when the game comes out I think, if the games does well of course.
It's annoying they've shelved it because of Rings not doing so well, they're completely different.

It's been sent to Sony and Microsoft for testing so I hope they stick with Early 2017. Did you play beta?
I loved it, it was such a fun game and it genuinenly had me on the edge of my seat. I was playing as the sporty girl and I was with a nerdy girl and we found the phone so we went outside to fix the fuse box and all I hear is Ki, k,i ki; ma, ma, and in the distance we see Jason run into a cabin but we get the phone working and call the cops and get joined by three people so there are five of us getting ready to leave this cabin and Jason shows up and we all start screaming and yelling as Jason breaks down the door and starts swinging his axe. If the other players are as into it it's honestly such an amazing game!

I had no idea about a F13th game but I kinda like the sound of it.
I watched 'As above,so below' recently and it was quite good. Have you seen 'Descent'? That's really good and the sequal is out now too, although I haven't seen that yet.
Yeah, I've seen As Above So Below since making that post and it was a solid watch. I've also seen Descent a long time ago but don't remember liking it as much. I thought that one was alright. I might give the 2nd one a chance anyway though.

It's honestly great fun if they don't deviate from beta too much.
One thing I perticularly liked was the mic system, there are radios on the map you can use to communicate with other players but if you decide to talk and Jason is around he can hear you. Which is good for killing off annoying people who play with music on or the sound way too high on their TV because Jason will find them quick :fan:

The cinema is in Camden Town. I'm going to have a look at the market, then go to see the movie :hee:

It has 5% on Rotten Tomatoes :worry:
I mean bad reviews don't really influence whether I watch a film or not but I'm surprised by how low it is. I'll probably just wait until it's out online as I'm usually picky with what I watch at the cinema.
I'm not normally bothered about reviews either... but they're so bad. And it's not just the low score, the actual write ups just make it sound terrible. I'm going to wait till it's online too.

Mess I thought John Carpenter would be directing. But I'm glad he's going to be involved in it either way. I also heard he'll be creating some new soundtrack for the film.
It'll be released on October 19th, 2018, fitting with the 40th anniversary of the original :flutter:

So what's the deal with this new Halloween? Is it supposed to be set in the same continuity as 1, 2 H20 and Resurrection or is it another reboot?

I shall be watching Hush shortly!

Apparently the new film will take place after the events of the first two original films. So it's basically going to be what Halloween 3 would've been if it had Michael Myers? I think
“You know, it’s not a remake. It’s actually, it’s gonna continue the story of Michael Myers in a really grounded way. And for our mythology, we’re focusing mainly in the first two movies and what that sets up and then where the story can go from there.
Green and I are definitely going to [do] a straight-up horror. Halloween has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. There’s a simplicity and an efficiency to that first one that I think allows the movies just to be scary as hell. And so Green and I, our approach is to get back to that.”
http://www.darkhorizons.com/new-halloween-set-after-the-second-one/
I think that's better than having another remake so I'm here for it.
Yes at a direct sequel to the original 2
(The timeline is such a mess)
Just realised that effectively makes it a prequel to H20 and Resurrection.

Unless it's a brand new timeline from Halloween 2 onwards, sort of like how H20 erased the events of 4, 5 and 6

I can imagine the fans fuming if H20 was erased from the original timeline.
(I wish they'd just ignored the Thorn thing though and counted 4,5 and 6 and included the fact Laurie faked her death in a car crash and thought she was keeping Jamie safe by giving her up but then when she heard Michael got Jamie anyway she thought she might as well keep John close)

Yeah I'd be here for it being a prequel to H20 but ignoring Resurrection tbh
I read that they originally intended to have a scene that referenced Jamie but decided to cut it and just have it act as a continuation of the second film.

or Halloween 4 if they decide to go with the Jamie Lloyd timeline. I hope they don't though.

I watched Inside the other day (one of Amy's home-invasion recommendations to Richard) and it was really good.
French horror never disappoints tbh. High Tension is another great one.

It's got a great storyline hasn't it.
French horror is some of the best, there are some really good films about. Inside is getting a remake. I don't know how I feel about it...especially after the mess they made of Martyrs :worry:

Ooh I still need to see Martyrs (the french one), I didn't even know they remade it tbh. But yeah I'm not that big into foreign horror but I love French horror. I'd like to get into Asian horror too so I'll probably start with watching the original Ring and The Grudge soon
Have you seen Funny Games? I'm keen on seeing as it as I've heard good things and it looks really good. It's home-invasion and there's both the Austrian original and American remake (by the same director of the original).

I actually don't enjoy Martyrs tbh, It's a hard watch imo - but I did appreciate the intent and the acting was fantastic. The remake is awful, I can't think of a worse one in recent memory.
I have seen Funny Games and I love home invasion so it was right up my street but I ended up kind of hating it, one scene in perticular ruined it for me.
An obscure home invasion film set in the UK I quite liked is Cherry Tree Lane. Nothing amazing but pretty realistic imo

i read it's a film with a creepy arty slow paced tension rather than full on super scary. is it actually scary or is it like it follows or the babadook (i.e. boring)?

I watched it a couple of months ago, and I really enjoyed it. I found it very tense pretty much the whole way through, but I would say that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Well worth the watch though!
