Big Brother UK hopeful Steve Beer probably won’t become a housemate this year – because he mistakenly auditioned for the American version of the show instead.
Steve was first linked to Big Brother last April, when it was reported that he wanted to prove he’s “not a scumbag” after appearing on Channel 5 documentary Benefits Britain: Too Fat To Work.
According to The Sun, the 45-year-old was again interested in entering the house this year – but he accidentally ended up sending his audition video to Big Brother USA.
Steve claims that BBUSA’s producers invited him to an open casting call, even though the show’s rules would almost certainly prevent him from taking part.
“I was asked to fly over to the USA to meet the producers of Big Brother US,” said Steve, who has also popped up on The Jeremy Kyle Show. “They invited me to go over for an audition, but I couldn’t get my visa in time – or a passport.”
Steve’s manager Barry Tomes – who also represents former Celebrity Big Brother finalist ‘White Dee’ Kelly – added: “The US production team were really keen for Steve to fly over for an audition – but it was the next day and in New Orleans. I was ready to book the flights right then – but Steve told me he didn’t have a passport.”
However, Big Brother USA’s eligibility requirements stipulate that all contestants “must be a United States citizen and live in the United States”.
Steve’s only hope of spending this summer in the Big Brother house now lies with C5 bosses, who are said to be recruiting ‘celebrity’ housemates to live with the normal ‘civilians’ in the latest twist – although rumours suggest that the ‘celebs’ are actually little-known tabloid figures.
