View Full Version : Is it easier to be a Boy than it is to be a Girl?

We were having a debate about this in our welsh lesson.

What do you think?

Personally I think it's harder to be a girlie. Because...
1. It's easier for boys to make friends, and it's hard for girls
2. Boys don't have periods (lucky them:rolleyes:)

ttw
06-02-2007, 10:52 AM
Pros and Cons for both....

Girls may think it is much easier on boys but they get alot of pressure on them too, they may put on a front and everything... but peer pressure - needing to look "big and hard" or being able to "get the most girls"...

Depends in which context you look at it aswell...

However, there is still alot of institutional sexism and just everyday sexism around, which makes it harder for females.

Everyone should just be happy with who and what they are.

Also girls have alot of pressure to be skinny.. because of these celebs

I agree with soph I think it is a lot harder to be a girl than a boy for the 2 reasons sophie said and also boys dont have to look pretty and put make up on they can just go out as they want

I agree Bex

Boys should have periods to go through our pain:laugh:

Girls don't have to wear make up...

Just because boys don't have to wear make up it does not mean they do not care about their appearance at all...

Obviously you can only be what you are, so you will never understand what it is like to be male and you will only be able to relate with what you go through so therefore may perceive what you are to be most difficult.

I would say that whilst men don't have to go through periods and childbirth.. they still have hard stuff to deal with..

As previously mentioned, they aren't encouraged to show emotion the way girls are, and can feel pressure to act like the "big man".

Also, I think the make-up issue actually favours girls.. We can put on slap to hide our spots and blemishes, but men can't do that, and when they are spotty teenagers, they probably wish they could!

Sophii3x
06-02-2007, 12:30 PM
Ahh yea I forgot about childbirth
That must be painful too

lily.
06-02-2007, 12:31 PM
Oh, and as for the kick in the nads.. I did that to my husband back when we were first going out.. We had been watching a horror on the telly and I had to go to the toilet... so, he decided it would be a good idea to jump out on me at the bottom of the stairs.... It wasn't such a great idea when my basic instinct was to raise my knee rather swiftly.

He spent the next 10 minutes on the floor, whilst I tried really hard not to laugh ..

I didn't mean it, but he kinda deserved it for scaring the chit out of me!

lily.
06-02-2007, 12:33 PM
Sophie, I can't really tell you much about the pain of childbirth.. I had two C-Sections. But, I did have 18 hours of labour first time around, and that was no picnic!

Easier to be a boy than a girl? I'm not sure. In the workplace, I would say it's definitely generally easier to be male, because there is a still a glass ceiling for women (although things are improving). But there is no doubt that women get away with things that men wouldn't get away with. For instance, see Cleo's behaviour towards Dirk (when she was being Tiara:rolleyes:) If he had behaved like that towards her, there would have been cries of sexual harassment! It isn't fair. I'm all for equality, but have things gone too far? Positive discrimination is still discrimination.

A girl. There's more peer pressure. I have a daughter and am shocked at how image conscious she's becoming.

Depends on your personality, situation etc. Not necessarily harder for girls than for boys or vice versa. You have to look at the individual.

For instance, if someone is overweight, unpretty etc, they could be bullied. If someone is slim and attractive, they may be popular. If someone is gay they could be taunted. You can be ridiculed for all kinds of things, from wearing cheap clothes to wearing glasses. Kids can be cruel.

My point is, it is harder for some than others. Not just necessarily boys vs girls. I hope you get what I mean!

I have always loved Madonna`s song `what it feels like for a girl`.
Sadly, I don`t know, and never will !!! To be honest the pros and cons list goes on for ever so its probably not possible to tick either box!!! I will
definitely settle for being male, but for no other reason than being happy, as I`m sure you girls are too!!!

Anyway, I think men still do have difficulties, but the biological differences between men and women means they experience different sorts of difficulties in life (quite obviously), e.g. men of course don’t get periods and don’t have to go through childbirth, due to the different maternal and paternal instincts. Also, I think in history and over the last centuries, women were always dominated and treated differently; therefore, it’s looked upon that women have had to struggle more as a result to get noticed. Staying at home jobs were normally left to them whilst the men went out to hunt etc. So they have had completely different ways of life throughout history, thankfully that wide gap is narrowing rapidly nowadays, and that isn’t the case any longer.

Oh yeah, did you get the whole "take 2 co-codamol and try and sleep" speech as well? I had 90 seconds between each contraction and finally screamed at the stupid woman to get a monitor in (and a Gynaecologist as well for that matter). Maybe she thought I was just bending over double, screaming and making "I'm in complete agony" faces for shlts and giggles!!!

Boy's can't help not having periods, or going through child birth. It's just natural for a woman to do that. And why women moan about it, I haven't a clue, cause they end up living their children eternally.

I think that being a girl or a boy isnt really easy for different reasons.

The obvious ones for girls are periods, childbirth, discrimination in the workplace etc

For boys there is a lot of pressure to be the defenders, the family guy, provider etc...

I think we all have our things to go through and probs on an equal level living isnt easy either way.

I'd completely disagree with that, maybe you'd have more enemies if you're a girl (like other girls bitching aobut you and stuff), but I know as a fact that if I was a girl I'd have more friends.
Maybe it seems boys make friends easier because they bond over football or something? but I hate football, so a lot of boys don't really have anything in common with me.

That's definitely not true, at least from my POV Sophie. I have a lot of friends, most of whom are boys, but boys are very much against "opening up" and so you rarely end up with a best friend if you're a boy, just "the lads" whom you tell nothing to.

i think its all the same

Everyone has problems in life and it doesnt matter what gender you are because they are different problems wich the same sex may have to face.

Yes girls have periods and may have to be "brainwashed" into being skinny because of the media and celebs

But males are ineasy about there bodies sometimes aswell

In my opinion we all have problems in life no matter what gender we are but some may be harder than others

I agree. Both genders face problems whilst growing up. Just cause female ones seem worse, doesn't mean we don't have any completely. I bet, if you were a boy, you would have made a thread saying "is it easier to be a girl than it is to be a boy".

I think in the physical ways,YES boys have it way easier than girls.

No Periods,No Pregnancy,No Labour,No HRT,the menopause.etc etc.oh and guys dont have too worry as much as girls about getting pregnant.Plus we are garanteed to always orgasam.

oh and Soph your teacher was wrong,i know a guy who was date raped by a girl.and i can tell you its one of the saddest things ive ever heard about or talked to somone about.

What does strength have to do with it? Unless you mean like pushing them away.. but if like a fully grown man is trying to rape a 10 year old boy, the boy probably wouldn't be able to fight them off.

I heard somewhere that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will have someone attempt to rape them sometime in their lives. :yuk:

Doesn't always mean boys rape girls, girls rape boys. As Noopie said, Men can rape boys.
