View Full Version : Biggins "joked that the showers were like gas chambers"
Jake.

Exactly what Christopher Biggins said to Katie Wassiel that got him kicked out of the CBB house has been revealed.
In last night's show, we saw Biggins get the boot for making 'numerous offensive comments' but, to the outrage of viewers, editors did NOT show all of the remarks, some of which were almost a week old.
In one chat that was shown, Biggins discussed the gay community and bisexuals in particular.
Afterwards, Big Brother spoke to Biggins and brought up past comments that he had made - but did NOT air - on MONDAY night to fellow housemate Katie regarding the Jewish community.
Big Brother used the chats as examples of offensive language that would not be tolerated in the house.
As a result, Big Brother told Biggins he would be removed immediately and had to leave there and then via the Diary Room door.
Biggins told Big Brother in response: "I am very sorry and I am very sad."
Now The Sun newspaper reports (via the Daily Mirror) that Biggins had 'joked' with Katie, who is Jewish, by comparing the showers of the house to Nazi gas chambers.
As the celebs queued up to use the shower in the morning, Biggins allegedly said to The X Factor singer: "You had better be careful or they will put you in a shower or take you to a room!"
Katie is said to have been left in tears by the remark, although of course we've no official confirmation as the footage has not been aired.
"I am mortified by what has happened. Most of my friends are in fact Jewish. I apologise," Biggins told The Sun on Sunday newspaper in an interview today. “I love Jewish people. Listen my best friend is Lesley Joseph and you don’t get more Jewish than that.
“I have lots of bisexual friends and I am not in nay way a bigoted person. I am 67 and I love everybody. I live in Hackney and have a lot of black neighbours who are fantastic.”
Celebrity Big Brother continues nightly on Channel 5.

Whatever it is, whether it is prejudice from him or just joking or even sensationalism on his part.
He has been an avid fan of BB for years, has been on bbbots loads of times, seen and commented himself on how some comments bring down housemates.
he should have well been able to guard his tongue in there and know what to avoid.
Really very foolish of him indeed.
HOW DARE HE bring Lesley Joseph into this

the man's like so many old people - they don't see how their comments and attitudes can cause offence and are often quite bewildered and upset when people call them out on it. the trouble is, he's only 67 - 10 years older than me - and his views are like those i'd hear aired by some 80 year old volunteer ladies in the shop i used to work in. 10 years is a blink of an eye, and yet he's like a dinosaur. a dinosaur that has, till now, been able to cover his generally unpleasant personality behind the big bright biggins persona.
just like most those older people who get called on their bigotry, he does the whole 'but i have friends who are a/b/c so i can't be...'. The thing is, the kind of jokes he might be able to crack with leslie joseph and not offend aren't necessarily going to be taken the same way by others who don't know him or who are prepared to ignore his off-colour remarks for the sake of showbiz luvviness.
he's a bigot & a liability on the show, though he's in good company with that latter observation.

it also annoyed me how he slipped in that katie was 'clearly a young girl with issues' as some sort of excuse about her reaction to his clumsy, outdated humour - blaming her is not an action of a man sorry for the effect of his words, it's a shifting of the blame from himself to her.

someone can do a whole lot of damage without deliberate malicious intent, and if anything the show has bent over backwards keeping the worst of his gaffes off air. it's the cumulative effect of his continued remarks they have had to address.

Isn't this what BB is meant to do, test mental strength, I doubt Katie was that bothered really, she seems to be very fragile mentally in there, even nominating Bear reduced her to tears for some unknown reason, they should have shown the footage, then put him up for eviction, they had ample opportunity to put him straight up with all his nomination talk.

there in lies the problem, because if you left him in, you would get groups forming for and against his attitude where his attitude is not up for discussion, he is a bigot. The issue is not about free speech but allowing someone in a privileged position to put his bigoted views across unchallenged and without balance

Agreed. If that is all he said, then it seems there was no malicious intent from Biggins. It was a joke (albeit a tasteless one about the sensitive and upsetting subject of death camps).
It wasn't a joke aimed at the jewish community, it wasn't even a joke ABOUT the jewish community, it was a joke aimed at Big Brother itself, by comparing them/the house/the regime of the show to that of a death camp.
Also Biggins didn't specify he was talking about Nazi-German Camps. Death camps have happened all over the world, not just in Nazi Germany.
Nor did he mention jewish people. Not only jewish people were killed in Nazi death camps but many people of various races, religions, sexuality and beliefs including homosexuals, intellectuals and artists - people/communities who Biggins himself identifies with i'm sure.
His joke didn't target any one group of people, his joke targeted Big Brother themselves. He used a tasteless comparison about a sensitive subject, but his joke was certainly 'anti-regime' and not 'anti-community'..
And it's not anything new to make jokes about death camps/nazis/world war 2. It's been happening ever since on a mainstream level. Think how successful 'The Producers' is as a film and a Broadway musical, it's full of nazi jokes. And what about sit-coms such as Allo Allo?
Do we all now want to feel we can no longer make jokes/comments about world war 2 (or other upsetting subjects) without fear of 'punishment'? Ironically, isn't that what happened during world war 2?
.
It wasn't a joke, there's a fine line between what's a joke and what's offensive

He's admitted what the joke was about.
He said: “You better be careful or they’ll be putting you in a shower and taking you to a room.”
The Panto star now admits that he was making a joke about Nazis, who gassed Jews in shower blocks.

you don't think him saying to the only(?) jewish housemate “You better be careful or they’ll be putting you in a shower and taking you to a room'' an allusion to gas chambers or at the very least the concentration death camps?
even biggins owns what his 'joke' was about. do i think he meant offence? no. he's too much of a self-centred old dinosaur to realise it was a bad gag and even worse timing

Did Biggins single her out because she's Jewish? Of course not. I bet he didn't even know she was. Honestly... you should hear some of the jokes made to me! You have to separate anti-Semitic venom and attempted humour. They are not the same thing, even if the joke is bad. This has been blown out of ALL proportion.

I feel like, as a Jew, you can't have an objective view of this and should leave the discussion to us Christians to be honest. Jews are notorious for having a bad grasp of humour and Katie Waissel, if anything, is one of the few exceptions to that rule.

That is where he is referring to the holocaust and the history of Nazi Germany....I don't think it was antisemetic because if anything it was a reference to Germanys invasion of Europe, not criticising Jews...it was also intended as a joke....but it was highly insensitive and clearly upsetting to Katie. But as unpleasant as it is, and he is, it wasn't antisemetic IMO.
His accusations about Bisexuals were far worse and were def not a crass rubbish attempt at trying to be funny....we all watched it, he totally meant it and believed it. There is no way he could stay after that.

Have you actually got proof, conclusive evidence you could make known that is substantiated as to your continuous at any chance you get, to accuse the Labour party of being anti semitic.
When you accuse the labour party of this, I think you should have to substantiate with evidence your wild and dangerous accusations, against likely many innocent people who are actually in the Labour party.
Your desperation, every chance you get on threads to, to tar the Labour party with being antisemitic is in my opinion and frankly wrong, unless of course you do actually have concrete evidence you can bring forward to back your claims from a possibly only own hatred of the Labour party.

A gas chamber joke is that all and BB chucked him out for that. You can't make an inappropriate without BB worrying about a backlash. I'm black and if he made a slave joke or worse I wouldn't be bothered it political correctness gone mad. Plus it's clearly an adult show giving us a million warnings before it starts.
Gays, bi's, race, religion, disabilities if it's a joke air it and let us decide but don't chuck them out and censor the incident. Imagine being in there and never knowing if your discussions or jokes will get you in trouble.
I think as long as hatred or advocating violence to another inside or out is not discussed it should be OK to joke or talk about anything.
I'm sorry if what I've written has offended anyone it's just my opinion as I don't get offended easily while watching these reality shows.

most of us have friends we could say certain things to and would not say those same things to others. guess it's about who shares your sense of humour. but having some emotional intelligence about things, some empathy to get that not everyone finds the same things funny (and why) goes a long way. not convinced biggins will learn anything from this, much, as so many involved in his career are in full damage-limitation mode and assuring him it's not his fault.

Humour is a real tricky thing in a situation where your opponents are trying to get you removed....firstly what's funny outside must feel very different in that pressure cooker of strangers with different ticks on the world...also some humour, often that I like, can be taken literally, on purpose, and used back as a means of diminishing the other person. But when he said AIDS was a Bisexual disease and they are to blame for spreading it around the Western World I knew he was f-cked....that's not just an opinion that's an accusation. Imagine if he'd said Muslims were to blame or Catholics ....you can't go around saying that sh-t on television.

Thrice I agree with you a lot so who am I to say you're opinion is wrong ....I think he's a victim of his own ignorance and stupidity more than his attempt to spread hate but from the producers position I can see why they would need to take care....as I gay guy I know how it felt to be blamed for that awful disease so I can only sympathise with the bisexual community. It does make it easier for me to take my stand on it though because I've never liked the guy, I'm really glad it wasn't someone I respect.

just like most those older people who get called on their bigotry, he does the whole 'but i have friends who are a/b/c so i can't be...'.
I love this comment. These are aspects I always consider with much older cast members. It is common that they lose some of their filter as they age. It's a lot like going backwards in brain development/time. Just like children's brains develop over time they're more prone to say inappropriate things and with the elderly as it is similar. They're not able to control emotions as well, can fly off the handle over the slightest thing and tend to be more anxious around unfamiliar surroundings or people. I've done care-taking so I've had to 'catch' things like this.
It's majorly exacerbated with people who are shut-in's to begin with or people who just never were big "thinkers". The only way to really combat mental decline is to stimulate the mind, play puzzles, watch TV shows, stay in contact with the outside world... in other words, stay stimulated. People who don't do those things or lead a very isolated/sedentary lifestyle tend to regress a lot faster imo.
I think in Biggin's it's fairly mild, but for all we know, his outside life is a huge air bubble like you said and that this strong of an opinion is accepted by his peers... or he is not used to strong personalities or people who can contradict him so he is trying to "win" people over by having 'strong' opinions  (i.e. race to be the fastest moron...)... I feel it's a mix of both.
I saw it really bad in Angie though. She should've never been cast. I think at one point she said she was a shut-in and I could totally see it.

I feel like, as a Jew, you can't have an objective view of this and should leave the discussion to us Christians to be honest. Jews are notorious for having a bad grasp of humour and Katie Waissel, if anything, is one of the few exceptions to that rule.

I think this why they are calling the younger generation "generation snowflake" - what he was distasteful but many old people come out with the most un PC stuff - I honestly believe in free speech - not in inciting hatred - but the freedom to speak your beliefs - why do people constantly get offended so easily?

:thumbs:As a Jewish woman I'd like to say to Katie... get a ****ing grip. Worry about the anti-Semitism in the Labour party and stop bursting into tears over ridiculous comments clearly meant in jest. If she was upset enough to be upset by a comment like that then she's clearly led a very sheltered life.
