..I honestly think with either of them, their supporters are less important to them in this than their own personal egos, just both really shabby people.../but yeah, phew it's over is all and hopefully we won't see so much of either in our media now...

Won't it be brought up in parallels to Brexit?

I'm getting tired too.

What I mean is, won't they bring up America's election when they talk about the Brexit result?... So it won't be the end of hearing about the election on BBC, etc. They've brought up Brexit several times past few days. I'm waiting for the news articles tbh.

I agree on the lesser of the two evils. It just came across to me that some people were quick to attack Trump for his 'crimes' but made little or no mention of hers.

I think many young voters blindly supported her simply because of Trump's immigation views, with little thought for the kind of person she acutally is. There are worse 'crimes' than not supporting imigration and being generally obnoxious.

I find her much more calculating and intimidating than him.

..they have I think been talked about quite equally, but they're just so different is all in terms of 'controversial' media talking points and it's very much been more a media thing for this election particularly...the general public react to media but they don't always have the same interest to research, do you know what I mean..?..(not in any defence of her because I personally have to see qualities I admire in someone and have respect for them..)...but I do sometimes wonder the general depth of corruption that could always be prevalent in USA government..(and the same with many governments obviously..)...could it be no better or no worse than with Hilary, but the only difference being the front-person themselves representing something that is warmed to, so over-looked/accepted as it were...but with the Clintons, Hilary and Bill..they're so disliked that it's been delved in and exposed because of their lack of popularity...

I only hope that Trump is so media-savvy and surrounded in the past 30 years by progressive attitudes that some of it will have rubbed off on him. I don't think I've seen anything directly homophobic from him in the campaign, but of course his Veep is a huge problem. That said, I don't think the LGBT are in danger. Women... yeah this is a kick in the teeth to them but he does seem at least apologetic of what he said and I'm not sure what else can come that'd increase his sexist reputation, so that's a positive I guess? good god at the idea of Melania being a first lady though...

Obviously the biggest worry with him is race relations, and standing aside and letting Russia do what they like. But then, the countries Russia seem to be quietly annexing seem 80% in favour of rejoining Russia anyway.

I don't think Trump being in power will be any more miserable than the deadlock in the houses that preceded him, however the Republicans having total control now (as I understand?) is worrying. I do hope he keeps his word and delivers jobs to those rural states that are desperate for them. I just don't really see how he's going to have the power or the insight to achieve it.

I agree with a lot of this. Well said

When I was in Texas last week I got talking to a Mexican man who has lived in the states all his life, he said he'd never experienced racism towards him until the last few weeks, that's the scary part, it seems like this is now some sort of validation for racist to crawl out of the woodwork, that's scary.

As with the Brexit result, this is what you get when people are shut down when they raise concerns over immigration. It's what happens when people lose their jobs, lose their homes and yet the country still allows more people to arrive. It's what happens when people are called racists and bigots when they express concern over immigration. It happens on this forum, it happens in this country and it happens in the USA. Brexit and Trump are a direct result of ordinary people having no other way to express their concerns.

I don't really know much about this at all (all the things Trump/Clinton stand for and are against etc), but what I do know is that Trump had a hell of a lot of anti votes going into this so congrats to him on winning, he must have had a whole lotta support too. Hopefully he is able to prove people wrong (though really, people are always gonna moan about things and no PM/President will get everything right).

There are plenty of places in the US where unemployment is particularly rife; places like Detroit, for instance, with the collapse of the car industry and Washington State where fewer and fewer people are employed in the timber industry. Even in affluent states there are pockets of huge unemployment and deprivation.

I actually agree with the latter part of that but I also don't think it's that simple. *tinfoil hat time* I don't believe in democracy, particularly. I think there are things going on behind the scenes that dictate the "flow of events" and that most of the surface politics we actually see is distraction / window dressing. Not "illuminati" in the traditional sense of the word; that concept is too well defined which is against the point. It's unseen. It's little shunts, nudges, leaks, tweaks, that result in seeminly miniscule changes in political gravity that end up completely altering political tides.

The reason I only partly agree that it's not meaningless is that I believe current "unbelievable" (except actually, obvious, if you've been paying attention) political events, like Brexit and Trumpit, are a symptom of / an integral part of those changing tides. It *is* weird. There is WEIRD **** going on that shouldn't technically be politically possible and shocks people every time and yet, it's becoming consistent enough to be spotted a mile off. It doesn't feel usual. It feels like chess pieces sliding into place in obscure ways, and us casual players can't see the checkmate coming and are confused about those moves. I guarantee there are more "shocks" to come in global politics and eventually, we'll see how they all fit together.

One thing I can guarantee is that it won't be anything good for the "common man".

Trump will be a good president this is a good result for democracy
He will shake the corrupt self serving paid off stinking senators to their core.
He will fight their endless march to globalisation
He will maintain social security, he will protect ex soldiers
He will attempt to have a dialogue with the ruskies
He will whack big tariffs on those exporting jobs and on cheap illegal chinese crap
He will rebuild the industries and the infrastructure
He will loosen some of the insane red tape on small to medium businesses and lower their taxes and rates and allow them to compete with the corporations
He will protect religious rights
He will maintain all the same rights for LGBT
as for sexism and racism? people throw those words around like confetti and forget the meaning.. the man has employed over 10,000 women/workers from outside america? He has women in top positions right across the 500+ big companies he has owned or part owned including his daughter as the head of his property empire
People say oh hes been bankrupt? when youre involved in over 500 big companies, the fact 11 of them went bust is a good average
He will attempt to wipe out ISIS whilst looking to reduce the middle east wars
He will not cowtow to special interests, including hard line radical muslims or hard line radical zionists...he will be his own man and will not be paid off, the man has balls
abortion he wants to hand it to the individual states. outside of health risks and rape, he favours putting a stricter time limit on abortion and investing billions into pro life choices for mothers and fathers to be. giving them options such as having the child and fostering it out, adoption. millions regret abortions, so I agree to pump in billions to give parents who may be struggling or poor or on drugs or drink or confused or scared or alone...to give them better support in that situation to give them all available choices and information and time and help them come to a well thought out reasoned decision is a very good way forward. the hardline feminist liberal approach , all women can have abortions whenever they like its their body, is at heart dumb self defatist and doesnt help the mother and certainly doesnt help the unborn child

He will protect gun rights as much as I deplore guns, in a nation of 300 million guns I guess youd have to buy one to protect yourself...I do however despair if he wont crack down on qualifying to buy guns and also automatic weapons need to be banned. I think hes plain wrong on that
obamacare. well who knows what the heck he will do with this? obamacare is a must. its insured over 40 miollion poorerst americans, but the premiums and mega high and theyre crippling small businesses so lets hope he can improve this
he will reduce the insane 20 trillion debt
He has an amazing family and incredible kids which is the real reason why he became president...if we all had families like that around us we too could run for president
in the end hes not the hard right nutjob some fear, hes not going to launch nukes, he wont enslave us to TTIP Nafta or the EU. he will bring jobs back to america

Fascinating result but what now for HRC. The American people are clearly telling her something with another rejection. Will she try again in 2020 where Kanye will probably beat her too. Time for her to pack it in for good IMO. Her presence on the ballot does very little that is positive imo particularly when she rallies all her friends to help her. Talking of which, I'd like to know waht the likes of Donna Brezile and Debbie Wasserman Shultz are now thinking after they tried their damndest to get their friend elected and she still couldnt win. Actually, i wouldn't say that is what happened yesterday. Main stream rich rebublicans flocked from trump for weeks... what you don't understand is the high amount of uneducated masses who actually have the same philosophies as trump in rural america....and what everyone got wrong was how that had seeped into the norther states, like Michigan, that lost it for Hilary in the end. Michael Moore called it in the end....

The common consensus was that there were not enough deplorables for Trump to win. They got that totally wrong.

Most polls had Bernie sanders beating Trump easily.

No...she is done now.... barring any recount turn around. She won't appear on any ballot again

I agree with this but I think you can actually take it as a positive sign... ... ... campaign bluster; he knew the voters he was targeting. I think there will be some issues when it comes to Islam, inevitably (and globally) but the rest of it I don't think there's actually a huge cause for alarm. I don't think he cares about sexuality; he just knows that his core audience does. I don't think he cares about abortion; same story. Much of his "passion" is really fake. Not much chance of him actually acting on it.

The thing I've never understood about this line of reasoning is that the criticisms of her actions whilst in various state offices are obviously subject to scrutiny but then the assumption that Donald Trump would've handled everything absolutely differently and Always Done The Right Thing™ is just incredibly naive. I understand the motives behind anti-establishment voting but the figures that people are placing their faith in - billionaires from birth with no experience of real working struggles, let alone global diplomacy - is just so so bizarre.

I think there are comparisons to be made; as you said yourself, the result is down to a frustrated and ignored population rallying behind something "different" that they don't fully understand.

However, that's not to say that it will be a "Nazi Germany situation" - because as I said before, I don't think Trump truly believes half of the rhetoric he used to gain votes. There's not real "passion" behind his various "-isms" and he's unlikely to actually act on any of them. He will focus primarily on the economy / isolationist ("Made By American Hands With American Stuff!") business idealism that he has, and make a bit of a mess there, and then he'll be voted out in 4 years.

The people in Germany were starving... no one in the US is starving. I could carry on with a whole host of reasons why this result isn't anything like Nazi Germany but I can't be arsed in going through it all every time there's a result someone doesn't like and we're back to the Nazi Germany comments. I once mentioned Nazi Germany completely in context of what we were discussing and you called Godwin on me. Not now though... now it's okay?

I hope USA's next election learns a lot from this one.

I hope Dems do. They've gotten a bit too cozy with Hollywood and the elites and forgotten about the middle class and the working class. Bernie Sanders actually warned about this and the Dems didn't listen

Healthcare costs are rising rapidly even with Obamacare, the estate/death tax would doom family farms, EPA regulations, while necessary, would've closed alot of coal mines and miners would have nothing left. If Hillary won, Dems would've left these families in the dust and the gap between poor and rich would've continued, unfortunately the worst possible person in the world, someone who will allow hate to reign.

At least the markets are plunging, and even though there are right now comparisons to Germany back in the 30s and 40s, There's still a good amount of opposition to Trump, even by GOP, in congress. Trump will have a rough road ahead and if he thinks he could still rule with an iron fist. He's got another thing coming.

UKIP increased its share of the vote in the last General Election by 10 percentage points to a total of 3.9 million and wound up with just one constituency under the UK's first-past-the-post voting system.

Under the D'Hondt system of converting votes to seats, UKIP would have gained 83 seats.

Labour would have won far less seats and the Tories 75 less seats, and the SNP's 50 seat increase would have been just 25.

The unfairness of our current voting system is best illustrated by the fact that UKIP required more than 100 times as many votes for its lone elected MP than the Conservatives did for each of theirs.

I recommend you do the same.

Both the Nazis and Trump came to prominence due to support from a disillusioned public that wanted something 'different.' Both the Nazis and Trump ran on a platform of scapegoating minorities and blaming them for their countries' troubles as a way of garnering support. Both Hitler and Trump's advisors are and were heinous. Both relied on the ignorance of the public to seize power.

Hell, you could possibly make connections of reports of violence from Trump supporters to that of the bursts of violence throughout the Nazi's rise.

There's a lot of significant similarities and focusing on the small differentiating details as a way to discredit it isn't really going to work.

I totally agree with this, I will help canvass endlessly all I can to get this first past the post system done away with.

Because for me not only will that bring far more representative result of elections as to how people voted but also it will,I believe, really help curb the extremes of all parties as to policy too, in order to get elected MPs in the first place.

No matter what party then leads in such a PR election or what combination of parties in government follows, such a govt; will at least command the true majority of votes cast in elections and therefore have a more true and right mandate.

People on here were last week calling Hillary Hitlary ...and posting oh so funny youtube videos hammering home the joke :idc: ... but don't you dare make the reference the other way :nono:

Your missing the Point
8 years wasted
Clintons are Corrupt as HELL

You do as you are told
or you are FIRED now

Would you let a egotistical rich man who had never seen the inside of an operating room operate on you instead of an experienced surgeon just because he believes that he could do a better job?
All we've had is hot air and sound bites from Trump - he's untried and inexperienced. Yet he's handed the biggest job (and a job that could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands) as if that doesn't matter. If that's not nuts, I don't know what is.

The Nazis didn't gain absolute power in Germany through a democratic process.

Hitler was appointed Chancellor by the ageing President, having lost a previous presidential election, and the Nazis dismantled democracy after that.
