View Full Version : Debate about debates: is debating debatable? Debatably.

Since every thread at the moment seems to become about this topic within a few pages anyway, I thought we should just bite the bullet and have a thread about it.

I don't waste my time debating issues we don't have any control over with people who don't have any control over the issues they are debating over.

But you will debate debates, so you must feel that we have some control over debates, or at least the concept of debating itself?

My main area of concern at the moment is pondering which gender debates mostly self-identify as... And also which area of the political compass they find themselves drawn towards. At what point do debates reach this level of self awareness and, to what extent do the debaters involved in each debate influence the overall personality of the inconclusion?

Well we did debate that child migrants not being checked would and could lead to terrorism and it went the usual way "they are REFUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZ, where is the humanity????"

then a fake child migrant killed 12 and maimed a lot more in Berlin

that kind of shut that debate down and we did not hear much debating from that side

Some times reality debates for the win the best....

Everything is, or should be debatable. However the reality is that some subjects invoke such strength of feeling in many, on either side of the debate, that things can quickly deteriorate into discord and personal attacks out of frustration over the expression of some opposing views.

Political correctness also hinders the process as people become fixated on what is/is not an acceptable view to express which of course can be viewed as an attempt to dismiss and invalidate perfectly valid opinions.

People rarely really listen to each other and misunderstandings become commonplace.

I have an opinion, it's worth the same as every other poster on here it's worth nothing.

also often you are debating with people still to live their lives and as such are still optimistic and idealistic and have not yet realised certain realities of life that come with experience, responsibility and commitment.

So a sort of debating nihilism, then? People just butting heads for the sake of it... Or maybe for sport? But then, is doing something for sport necessarily worth nothing? From a nihilists perspective, isn't entertainment, whilst still meaningless, in fact worth everything to the individual?

I agree to an extent but not totally. You're saying in pretty concrete terms that "with age comes wisdom" which is false - and demonstrably false in that you can take two people of the same age, at ANY age, and of comparable life experience, and find conflicting opinion. Thereby negating the possibility of some sort of universal accuracy in "wisdom".

You have to be careful about misidentifying entrenched opinion layered in confirmation bias as "knowledge", "experience" or "wisdom". Sometimes it's just the same old crap that was there in a person's earlier years, caked on and dried out into stinky cement.

Considering most debates end in, infractions for insulting someone else's opinion because it's not the same as your opinion on a subject in wich no ones opinion means anything, I say it's like poking yourself in the eye over and over.

Mind you your 'proof' was a mail article, so forgive me for not bowing to the wisdom of the brownshirts.... their reliability as a reputable media source is debatable

No

what we must do is just check the validity of the "bad ones" and let the "good ones" go through unchecked.

I will alert the authorities on this breakthrough

But...general conversation in life wouldn't happen if we all thought like this :p If you could only talk about things you personally have control over...the list is pretty short for most people. Unless we have Theresa May or something posting on here...

Weathers nice isn't it?

Well it's fun innit?Futile but fun.I mean a load of Big Brother fans aren't gonna change the world. We're not in parliament. We can't even change each others opinions.
Shouting our unchangeable opinions at each other and being pulled into cryptic circular mazes of confusion until our brains are so fatigued that one or both parties gives up or 'agrees to differ' is just summat to do until BB starts. Then we can pick a team(housemate) and vigorously fight for their honour even if we don't even like them but it's too late because we've already nailed our colours to the mast.

You change the world in the way you raise your pot lids, and if you don't have any how you act and interact with others around you. If that's negative then I'm a firm believer that draws more negativity to you, in effect we choose the world we live in.
We do influence each other, why only today I influenced you to use the term 'nail our colours to the mast' ... It's nice to know what I say resonates on such a subconscious level :hee:

I was late for hospital and she was singing the frozen song whilst randomly stopping to yell 'snowman!!' at me and I just didn't have time :joker: When we got back the frost was gone too.

When there is snow, I would bet my left tit that she won't touch it to actually build a snowman as she hates cold things

I kind of agree with this. I also think that more diverse point of views can be driven away from the forum and the diversity is interesting. We can listen even if we disagree.
