What do you mean by your computer is blocked? Like, it wont turn on, asking for password, what?

yes but unless your dad allowed them access remotely to the pc or downloaded something..

it cant be blocked from a phonecall, did he sit at the PC and follow the instructions?

Vicky.

OK. Sounds like this is a trojan called Reveton. Search up on that...I sorted one of these out for a friend years back so will look into it now. You obviously know this but do not send any money anywhere, the one my mate had was asking for $300 to be send by 'moneypak' to unlock the computer.

Also if you do any internet banking or anything, contact your bank to let them know to be on the lookout. There is a very large chance these scammers have remote access to your computer right now

I agree with this logic, I watched someone control my PC cos I kicked up a fuss about how difficult it was to download something. They were moving the mouse etc, but I could too, I'd imagine the connection would have been lost if I turned off wifi or the entire computer

Who told you not to turn it off adam?

I know this doesnt solve your problem, but it might give them one..

When you turn it back on they could still have access though

Really depends tbh. Usually they just want cash to 'unlock' it but if they have remote access the possibilities are endless. All files saved on the comp will be theirs. IIRC depending how long they have had access they could creata a 'backdoor' which will allow them access at any stage in the future (though not sure if thats only webpages, or actual computers). Will have access to any saved passwords..and so on

Lol literally this same exact thing happened to my aunt, I think exactly a week ago. She says she's on the phone with Microsoft because she got hacked... so I go look at her computer and someone is controlling the mouse on the other end with the scam popup on the screen & phone number on it and a notepad document "form" for her to put all her information in so that they can "help". :joker: I just turned off the computer (struggled to because the guy on the other end also had control of the mouse - dude was angry as ***** on the phone) but then the problem was also the same as you; couldn't get back on because the password was changed or something. Messy situation.

She went to get it fixed a day or two later but she didn't have any important info on there anyway apparently.

Oh and apparently they asked if she buys stuff online and stuff like that... Idk how you wouldn't realize this was a scam while on the phone with them? Microsoft asks these questions now? :joker:

I hope you get your computer unblocked. In future tell your dad to keep a whistle next to the phone and next time one of these scum tries to cheat him, to give one long hard blast down the phone.
A couple of tips to give him. One is that these scammers usually have an Indian accent.Never give any persaonal information or bank information out over the phone or computer. There is another scam doing the rounds where they pretend they are from the tax office and you have to pay a tax debt that has been overlooked and needs paying now. All scams.

omg

The best advice is if someone rings asking for personal details, bank details, access to your computer etc and say they're from a company like BT or Microsoft or whatever, you say I will ring BT myself to make sure this is legit, if it genuinely is BT or whichever company they would have no problem with you doing that and wouldn't try to convince you to stay on the phone

If there are no important documents stuck behind the password (that you can't access by plugging the hard drive into a different computer) then I personally would back up anything important and blank the drive then reinstall windows from scratch .

You don't need an array of AV to avoid viruses. The number one protection against computer viruses is user knowledge. If you don't click dodgy links, follow dodgy phonecalls, or visit dodgy websites then the basic, free AV protection that comes with windows is more than enough. I haven't used 3rd party AV for more than a decade. I've never had a virus. And I torrent :joker:.

Basically they're relying on ignorance... be skeptical and don't install anything you don't recognise and your PC will be fine.
