It shouldn't be challenged because it's irrelevant to anything he has yet done in the house
If you searched the background of all these people I'm sure there's something you would deem 'inappropriate' or 'offensive'. I don't see why people are interested tbh.

How is someone being blatantly homophobic and spouting hate speak irrelevant? What if he used racially motivated language, would we be ignoring that also?

It's actually quite pertinent before we go a whole series applauding him for being a nice guy when he's covering up such stupidity (at best) or bigotry (at worst).

As a gay man i do find this extremely offensive. I didn't like him anyway and i certainly dont like him now! Should be booted out and replaced with one of the others! I recon one of the other 3 that didn't make it in would do his job better as he wont listen to the public anyway, hes an arrogant little s***.

If he'd said this stuff in the house I would agree with you, but this is one word he tweeted to somebody that may just be a lack of awareness
It's actually quite pertinent before we go a whole series applauding him for being a nice guy when he's covering up such stupidity (at best) or bigotry (at worst).
Well if we were a few weeks into the series maybe I could get behind this thought process, but there's literally no proof of this being a legit thing and not just stupidity

Yeah sorry I don't subscribe to this "What you do outside is irrelevant" way of thinking if we're talking about recent things, you don't become a whole different person the moment you walk through those doors. If he's tweeting hateful crap like that, I think that's probably pretty representative of what he's like as a person.
I wouldn't go hunting down housemates' social media but if I become aware of things like this, I'll form an opinion on it and I make no apologies for that.
Likewise, I take positive outside-world things into consideration too. It all contributes to forming an opinion on them as people (which I think is important since people could very well modify their behavior in the house to come across a certain way).
And no, I don't dislike him because he was voted in, that wasn't his doing. That's just a weak way of absolving him of any responsibility and putting all the blame for any negative feedback on everyone else instead of him.

I see your point and I understand why it's taken into consideration even though for me personally it doesn't sway my opinion either way. Mostly because we don't really know the context of these tweets people send, or the relationship between the people within the conversations. Sure it's not okay to use the word '******' and some people will be offended by it or assume he's homophobic, but until I actually see this in his real life actions, I'm not going to see him as a solidified homophobe because sometimes people use words without realizing how it effects others.
No this isn't a defence post saying he's not homophobic or whatever, I'm just unbothered by some random tweet from a year ago

Must be easy for someone who'll never have to be on the receiving end of it to dismiss it so easily, huh?
Thankfully I've never heard it directed at me (at least not to my face) but I have had a particular racial slur more than once and these things aren't "just words" so I'll continue to say that people who have had negative experiences with words like "******" and others thrown at them by small-minded morons have every right to react to it with the contempt it deserves.

Because you are not part of any minority that is often on the receiving end of prejudice, you have no understanding of what it's like and thus no empathy for any situation other than your own. You have no idea of what it's like to be worried about reprisals when it comes to being open about your sexuality, you have no clue what it feels like to not want to get close to a partner in public because it could end up resulting in violence from other people.
It's just a word for you because you've never experienced the fear of not being part of the majority. Try to have more empathy for people who aren't as lucky as you are because you will never experience abuse like that.

It's a good day, people! Queen Chuff has declared that Homophobia isn't a thing! Gay people aren't targetted at all any more! Russia no longer has a problem with them! Gay Rights are now enforced all over the globe! It's no longer illegal to be gay in places where it was half an hour ago! The Shooting at Pulse Nightclub didn't happen because Queen Chuff of Equality over here has told us all that Homophobia no longer exists!

Evidently not diverse enough to know these exist
Its something that happened over a year ago and is unrelated to BB and he shouldnt be judged on his time in the house on that.
I dont see people judging Kayleigh on wanting to kill a cat
The fact remains that we know nothing about him. Has he changed? God knows. Why did he use it in such a context? God knows. We can only presume he hasn't changed (we don't really have reason to believe otherwise), and I don't know him but I don't see why or how he'd come to accept lgbt+ people in a year after 20 years of life he grew up to believe it's acceptable to use a homophobic slur
ok tbh I don't even remember who Kayleigh is but when did she say that?

Because that is exactly what he meant
I've been inundated with more than a few gay issues in my time, let me tell you
Because that is exactly what he meantI was replying to the person who said they only existed in the 1930s. I know the guy in question never meant it that way, I ain't a moron you know?
Can you still use the word moron? it's hard to keep up these days, with what's right and wrong

Uff so there is a chance he might be ejected.
I'd say that Tom's use of the word is born out of ignorance rather than out-and-out homophobia.
Calling someone a 'f*ggot' or saying 'that's so gay' is ignorant undoubtedly but it's very rarely meant in an explictly homophobic context, it's just an ignorant expression
His use of the word is not something I'd condone but by bringing up his previous tweets people are looking for a subtext that doesn't exist

I took a instant dislike to Tom. I don't know why i just think he has potential to be a nasty piece of work!

I'm sure you're fine with moron as it's never been used in a derogatory way towards minority groups.

Why the **** dont contestants hide their twitters when they go in. They know people trawl back years in some cases looking for stuff
I can't really comment on this too much. If outsiders looked into some of my private convos with friends we would be ripped apart. Having said that I would never say much of the stuff I say on a public platform when I know other people could possibly read in and be offended. For example, 'fag' is seen almost as a term of endearment by one of my gay mates (genuinely, he introduces himself to people as 'the fag**t of the group' too which has caused so much hell on in the past). I am apparently his 'fag hag'. But I know others would take so much offense to even hear those terms so I don't use them outside our group :/
It wouldn't surprise me much if he turned out to be a raging homophobe but tbh thats me stereotyping :S

Apparently moron is offensive to those with mental health issues/learning disabilities. I was advised last week on mumsnet (yes, mumsnet, laugh it up the rest of ya  )

I was going to say pretty much this Vick, I have a gay friend who I call every offensive name under the sun and he does the same back.. there's literally no line to be crossed.
However, would I do it publicly on Twitter? Probably not. And I also have to say that other than to him, I would NEVER use such language in normal everyday language.

Really? I would never say the R word or the M word when referring to a stupid person, but I've always thought moron just applied to a person who hasn't got much get up and go?

IDK. Apparently moron used to be used to describe those with learning disabilities or something. So they told me. I didn't care enough to actually check as I do think that if we were to avoid every single term that every single person found offensive, chances are the english language would cease to exist...
OK..it seems I was a bit hasty in writing this off as a one person taking offense thing.

Changing the way language is used: Words like ‘idiot’, ‘spastic’ ‘moron’ and ‘imbecile’ were medical terms used years ago to talk about people with learning disabilities. It is not ok for people to use these words.
Mind, 3 years ago and 1.5k supporters who probably didn't even read the actual text  Idiot is offensive?!

Yeah that's a lot of pish... a spastic has never been somebody with learning disabilities! It was a medical term for somebody with physical disabilities like cerebral palsy.. my cousin was born with severe disabilities (over 50 years ago) and he was referred to as a spastic
And idiot is just daft too!

He was kidding around with his friend. I get that it indirectly effects / offends others but it's not like he was being malicious. I don't like the word either though and I'm not gay so I imagine it's worse to hear for a gay person in particular.
However, Tom must not be too bad of a person if this inappropriate joking with his friend is the worst thing people could find from probably searching years back on his social media. :joker:

What if he had written a tweet calling someone 'a posh idiot' would that be labelled 'hate speech' or 'upper-class-ophobic'?
What if he had targeted an individual with a big nose and called them 'concorde face', would that be considered 'hate speech' or 'body-phobic'?
Why is it NOT OK to make rude comments or use rude words about certain groups within society, while at the same time it's totally ok to say rude things about other groups or individuals?
Why is it ok for us all to say hateful things about INDIVIDUAL HMs and attack them on a very personal level, while at the same time we can't say anything bad about their race/gender/sexuality etc?
These forums are full of so-called 'hate speech' towards individual HMs! So is every episode of BBBOTS. So is every newspaper. It's offensive sometimes yes, but no one expects them to stop it.
The crowd last night were full of 'hate speech', quickly judging HMs based on their accent/beliefs etc and then really booing them, shouting 'OFF OFF OFF OFF' like a pack of rabid dogs - is that not 'hate speech'?
My point is: You can't have it both ways.
If you want to be fair and intellectually consistent then you can't call it 'phobia' and 'hate speech' one minute (when it refers to certain beliefs/genders/sexuality/races etc) while at the same time pull someone apart on a really personal level with the exact same kind of 'hate speech' and think that's OK !
(in fact the comments made about HMs on a personal level on BB forums and on BBBOTS are usually FAR worse than some old off-hand tweet like Tom's)
Either you ban all 'hate speech' which means no more rude comments about ANYONE EVER regardless of their race/gender/sexuality/background etc (which would be a pretty boring, over-controlled world to live in) or you allow people to say what they like and just deal with it whether you like it or not.
You can't pick and choose.
It's all or nothing.

You don't understand and you never will judging by the examples you used in this post.
Having a big nose isn't likely to result in being attacked or abused, rich people don't live in fear of being thrown out by their families and loved ones because of their status. These examples are not examples of hate speech, you don't understand what hate speech is because you likely have never been a victim of it. Hate speech does not equal insults. It's an attack on someone's existence and it's about enforcing the feeling that certain parts of society are second class citizens. Telling someone they have a big nose is not hate speech and quite frankly it's vile that you think they are in any way shape or form at all similar because it downplays actual hate speech and makes it seem less dangerous than it actually is.
You need to understand what Hate Speech is because this post just tells me that you don't have a clue, also don't bring up a freedom of speech quote when you don't really understand what that means either.

FFs. It's about moral responsibility and social sensitivity. The reason race and sexuality are two of the most sensitive areas of hate speech is as follows. 'Posh' people and people with big noses have never gone through mass persecution, nor are they still fighting for equal rights across the world. Hate speech targets the most vulnerable in society; people who are still fighting for rights.
