Daleks and Cybermen - they'll be back, they can't axe the most iconic villains from the show forever.

As for the others, they're all Moffatt inventions so I won't miss them massively.

Nobody's said anything about stories being "done". Although Moffat specific creations like River Song, he's said himself her story is over.

All Chibnall has done is confirmed we have no returning characters/villains in series 11. Which is only a good thing.

Nothing would stop any of them returning at any point in the future.

"We don't get aliens in Sheffield." In a South Yorkshire city, Ryan Sinclair, Yasmin Khan and Graham O'Brien are about to have their lives changed forever, as a mysterious woman, unable to remember her own name, falls from the night sky. Can they believe a word she says? And can she help solve the strange events taking place across the city?

This actually sounds so epic. :amazed:

I get they probably wanna save the new titles music for when the first episode airs, or at least if the titles are previewed ahead of time, but they could at least have used the old title music, or maybe a bit of score.

No title sequence will top the cogs and clocks based one, that was adapted from a fanmade video!

No, but I wasn't just randomly remarking on the music, I was responding to a post questioning the choice in music, so I was just running through possible options. Like I said, score music to tease the new composer's style might have been cool, or just I Am The Doctor which sounds trailerish.

Disappointed in the fact we didn't get a new score from the new composer. I didn't expect any element of the theme tune, we usually never get a preview of it until it airs.

You mentioned title music. I was merely saying, wanting to withhold the title music won't have anything to do with it, as they could have used countless actual scores that don't stick out like a sore thumb, like a random pop track.

She was definitely at her best in the opening sequence and the ending sequence.

If she is more of that in her persona she's gonna be great. Less of the scatter brain.

Kinda glad we won't have much of Grace, I like the actress but her "eh bah gum" Northern accent was grating and not natural, as is Ryan. Why they couldn't just be southerner's living in Sheffield.

Ratings for the first episode are in..

The Woman Who Fell To Earth pulled in a massive 8.2 Million viewers (40.1% share).

Compare this with Capaldi's first episode in overnights. Deep Breath got 6.8 Million. Already a fantastic start and will easily add another 1.5 Million in official figures. I'm guessing we're looking at around 10 million officially.

Also, this is the highest rating premiere episode since 2008, see below.

Partners In Crime - 8.4 Million (Series 4, Tate Return)
The Eleventh Hour - 8.0 Million (Series 5, Smith Debut))
The Impossible Astronaut - 6.5 Million (Series 6, Part 1)
Let's Kill Hitler - 6.2 Million (Series 6, Part 2)
Asylum Of The Daleks - 6.38 Million (Series 7, Part 1)
The Bells Of St John - 6.18 Million (Series 7, Part 2)
Deep Breath - 6.8 Million (Series 8, Capaldi Debut)
The Magicians Apprentice - 4.58 Million (Series 9)
The Pilot - 4.46 Million (Series 10)

It was a good start, it's difficult to judge Jodie just yet since regeneration episodes rarely do the new doctors justice but I think she'll be a very strong doctor. The supporting cast seems great too.

I'm not surprised it's done well in the ratings, a sunday slot allows more consistency than the series has had in years, less competition too.

I quite enjoyed it. I didn't think the premise of the story was great - just a monster going about killing people. I hope that gets better.

The writing wasn't quite on point and tbh I didn't like any of the companions :worry:... But I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and think it'll work.

Changed my mind about the theme.

Too repetitive. It's like monotonous?

I know we're too used to Murray Gold's orchestral stuff but, still.

Or maybe it was because it was extended over that long guest star reel at the end. (Speaking of which, get those viewers with Julie Hesmondalgh and Shobna Gulati!!)

I actually preferred the little part we heard of it when Jodie first crashed through the train. That sounded cool.

I quite enjoyed it. I didn't think the premise of the story was great - just a monster going about killing people. I hope that gets better.

I'll keep watching - I usually watch one episode when there is a new Doctor Who, and give up. And I'm wondering how they get out of being stranded in space.

Made on the cheap in Wales.

The second episode was considerably better, and her scattered attitude seems to have faded. She tended to be a little cringey in delivery at times but considering she's new to the role and has never really watched Doctor Who, it is to be expected that she's still settling in.

The Stenza seemed a decent villain so I’m glad they’re maybe getting some more development.
The Timeless Child?

Also, I howl at people criticising the fact that none of them got shot. You HAVE seen this show before right? There’s a scene like that in most episodes  The Daleks develop the worst aim in the universe where they’re aiming at The Doctor.

You startin' a ting? :oh:

My criticism was basically at the way the scene was directed/shot.

Of course they weren't going to be killed, but have the scene unfold that makes you believe they just narrowly avoided it rather than the expert snipers simply missing them just because. :fist:

They sort of explained it though through the whole zig zag running they were doing - The Doctor said running in a straight line would let the robots learn their path.

The Doctor, again.

The visual effects are so fantastic this year, some of those shots wouldn't have looked out of place in Star Wars. I really liked the fact we got some follow up on the monsters from episode 1, and I'm hoping the "timeless child" thing crops up again. Felt like we could have done with a bit more from the companions, but I'm hoping next week's plot won't need as much exposition so there can be more time spent focussing on character development, particularly for Yaz.

I have mixed feelings about next week- it could be brilliant but could also be handled terribly. The fact that it's Malorie Blackman writing it gives me some hope- I just feel like forcing an alien threat in there could feel tasteless. I would love a pure hitorical episode.

That episode was one case where that might actually have worked, with the Tardis at least - most of the episode was filler crap, so binning most of that and replacing it with the Doctor trying to convince the natives of the planet that the Tardis is her ship rather than a Thing From God might have been interesting. Keep it as a race across the planet with the Tardis being the finish line, but the Tardis crashed through time and space, landing on the planet and becoming a legend. The Doctor's teleport got the right place, but not the right time.

Fair enough, different strokes and all that.

Capaldi grabbed me from the off, I thought he was awesome, and he elevated the crap writing he was given. But this series I just find everything ... fine. Whittaker is fine as the Doctor, if a little uncaptivating. Bike is an interesting companion, Fed might as well not have been in the episodes so far. Bradley Walsh is my favourite thing about it so far, and I really hope at some point he catches an enemy, and says "for you the chase is over!"

But maybe some of the remaining episodes will knock my socks off.

You should read up on Claudette Colvin, the actual first black woman to refuse to give her seat up on the bus, but the Civil Rights Movement didn't want to use her as a face of the movement due to her being a pregnant teen (and some people say because her skin was much darker than Rosa's)

The episode was neat, probably my favourite of the season thus far, but I feel like Rosa's story was outshadowed slightly by the ridiculousness of the alien plotline? I would have liked to see Rosa playing a bigger role to better portray how sad it was to live in such horrid conditions.

I do think the writing this series has been fairly weak, though, which is a shame. The first two episodes were fairly forgettable in the grand scheme of things.

Im just glad that their plot wasnt that Rosa Parks was an alien sent from a planet 300 galaxies away to stop racism and that the episode followed a fairly ... realistic approach (besides the racist alien guy).

I thought it was a good episode, clumsy in parts (mainly to do with a bunch of english characters knowing so much about Rosa when American History isn't really taught much in the UK) and the villain was woeful but this wasn't an episode in which the villain mattered.

It's a daring episode but overall I thought it was a triumph tbh.

American History is taught loads in the UK

The worst acted New Who companion BY FAR.

It's weird not having pre-titles scenes now

I think I understand why now.

The old titles they could have a dramatic cut into from an intriguing cold open.

With these new ones, they have quite a silent and gradual start so it would look odd smash cutting from a cold open to those.

Repeats the tired phrase of 'The Doctor owns a time machine so she could just to back in time and save ha' whilst preparing for the flood of sci-fi nerds to tell me that its not that easy and changing history is dangerous

Not dangerous, it just can't be done.

But that's two villains we've had out of three episodes vanish/teleport elsewhere.

An arc is forming.

The episode itself was fine, but what was with the crap popsong they played toward the end, and then over the credits? The new composer sucks, I can't even remember any of the episodes' scores...

The crap pop song, I'm led to believe, is one of the songs used by the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Doesn't make it any less crap or out of place in a Doctor Who episode.

She was an associate of Dr King, who preached for nonviolence, so they'd probably both be against BLM anyway.

American History is taught loads in the UK

Not really unless you're talking at college/uni level which is deceptive since that would only be available to people opting to do history courses in those subjects. My experience in history at school were of the Vikings, Anglo Saxons, Greeks and Romans and then English history and then I dropped it in year 9 but I know people who went on to do it in Year 10 and 11 just focused on WW2. I don't think American History is ever really covered at the level of history that most students will experience in school.

Tbf, Rosa Parks is very well known. I'm not au fait with a lot of major American history but even I know the Rosa Parks story.

Like everything I've come to know about US history, it's come from the internet and other sources. I've known of Rosa Parks for years but I can't recall many other UK people knowing of her.

BLM isn't violent, as ever it's the white people on Fox News that focus on extremes to tar a whole movement because they are scared of black people. Most BLM protests are peaceful and you don't hear of them because the kind of media that often covers them want the protest to erupt into violence so they can do their 'look at these violent black people' sctick

I'm surprised you think that, Dezzy. I'm certain I learnt a bit about American History throughout school, and I think those who are intentionally not ignorant know who Rosa Parks is. I'm confident enough to suggest that I would've been able to explain who she was at Primary School age. Though, there were a few things I wasn't aware of before watching the show (that she was a seamstress, knew Martin Luther King, etc.)

Anyway, I'm absolutely in love with this series. I think Jodie is absolutely fantastic, and I'm fond of all the companions. I think it's a really nice mix. The cinematography is spectacular, and I've enjoyed all three episodes very much. I haven't been able to sit through a Doctor Who episode since S5 (or the 50th special if you count that), so I'm extremely happy that my love for the show has resurfaced. I think Chibnall and everyone else are doing a really good job, there's a sense of excitement and intrigue with each episode, and I like the fact that there isn't an over-riding need to overcomplicate things like before.

I was looking forward to Rosa and it didn't disappoint. Fantastic from start to finish.

Maybe the curriculum has changed in the 12 years since I left school but I've personally never heard of American history being covered in anything other than College and Uni courses related to it. I had to learn everything I know about US history off my own back.

I'd be all for changing the curriculum if it hasn't changed since I was in school. I'd have taken history as an option had it covered more than it did.

I was looking at an article earlier and saw that the series 11 premiere episode was the highest rated episode since the premiere of the revival of Doctor Who, mainly due to the BARB including ratings from people watching on other platforms (computer, mobile, tablet, etc).

Rose - 10.8m viewers
The Woman Who Fell To Earth - 10.9m viewers

Holy ****

It's so weird to think that series 10 was getting sub 3m overnight for some episodes and now it's on par with the revival series

No, UK schools don't cover much American History, but Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks I imagine are two of the biggest figures that at least get a mention.

Doesn't make it any less crap or out of place in a Doctor Who episode.

It wasn't out of place, it was directly linked to the subject matter of the episode.

"Out of place in Doctor Who" is a meaningless statement as its a show that completely changes its tone, genre and style from one week to the next.

I, for one, am glad the show has remembered it's not just about space travel and fighting, but also about time travel. So getting an episode set in the past with the sci-fi/alien aspect toned right down is recapturing an aspect of Doctor Who we haven't seen in a while IMO.

I'm probably super slow at realising this, but aside from 'The Parting of Ways' all of the regeneration episodes have 'Time' in the title
-The End of Time
-Time of the Doctor
-Twice Upon a Time
