It’s impossible to make an informed comment without knowing exactly what happened. We don’t know exactly what occurred or whether the man had acted in a threatening way which led to the possibly heavy-handed response. Without more details any response is guesswork!

"Your hands should have never been around my neck like that if my hands were in the air," Mr Wall added.
That's correct. The man was defenseless and therefore the attack was unjustified.
Of course, this is just one man's word against another... But right now it's not looking good.

Whatever it was, I can't imagine it warranted an attack as vicious as that. The man had absolutely no control going by the video and he looked genuinely terrified. He should've been handcuffed and sent away there and then, not strangled and pushed to the floor.

guess joining police is next best thing since kkk has lost support
why so many policemen there are fat? don't they have a fitness test? or is it that they don't need to give a chase coz they just shoot?

You are not a policeman not have you any idea what it like to try and restrain a perp who will not do as they are told
you need to get them on the floor fast and on their front, you dont know what they have on them, knives, needles guns

I agree, Ash. Under Self-Defence Law no matter what the guy did PRIOR to the clip - that ACTION had PASSED, so any violent act by the cop AFTER that is NOT self-Defence but RETALIATION and ASSAULT.
If the guy has his hands in the air offering NO resistance then the cop's action is ASSAULT because only REASONABLE force necessary for restraint or arrest is lawful.

not necessarily
imagine a white supremacist who can't join kkk for whatever reason, e.g. no local branch, and you still want to put blacks in their place
why not join the police?
don't think it's too much of a stretch to imagine it happens

When I worked in America, I lived in South Carolina and spent a lot if time in NC. There was then still a very apparent black / white divide and therefore it is not a massive stretch to believe there is some unpleasant racial undertones that exist. The cop does appear to be very heavy handed but as we don't know the full details cannot comment further.

These cop brutality/shooting videos may give the impression that the USA is riddled with Racist or Fascists or Power-Hungry pervs who need to 'grind Their Own Axes' but these incidents are still rare in a such a vast country and although one incident is too many, it is best to keep a sense of proportion.
I personally believe that SOME racists DO gravitate to jobs such as the Police or Prison Officers - both in the USA and here, but they ARE in a tiny minority and MOST cops are decent people doing a thankless job under extremely dangerous conditions.
In my opinion anyway.

Totally, Kirk. It wasn't my intention to blame all police. Don't know America, but what we see is disturbing and there must be some reason on BOTH sides.
In the UK, overall, I have utmost respect for the police force. The fact that I worked for them freelance for a while has done nothing but strenghten this respect.

Oh, I didn't mean you specifically Twosugars. I meant all of us in general. We get that swamped with these vids that we do sometimes forget that - like Muslim extremist terrorism - it SPECIFICALLY because it's 'bad' news that we are swamped with them, and that CAN lead some to think that ALL cops in the USA are brutal or racist (and ALL Muslims are terrorists etc).
I would not have a cop's job given in this ever increasingly insane and violent world.

I agree with you Kirk. Clearly that particular officer was using more force than he should have been but generally I think it must be a very hard job in the US because everyone is a potential gunman. It must be a very hard and stressful job.
I'll have to ask my husband when he gets home to be ask about the specific method, but I don't think he was intending to choke him... looks like he was trying to restrain him via his shoulders to get him down to the ground. It's a maneuver iirc.

:clap1: Absolutely agree, kirk. Police work must be one of the most difficult jobs in the world, and particularly in American society. They have my respect.
Just as in all walks of life, there are good and bad people, as well as people who will make mistakes, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule.

Just awful. Regardless of anything that happened before the video started, there was no need for it given the fact that the position the guy was in, with his arms up..he could have been cuffed, or at the very least restrained without being grabbed by the throat.
Also the way he was thrown down was OTT too.
But another day, another video like this. They have lost the ability to shock now.

It's indefensible, the man was unarmed and his hands were in the air and the police cannot choke anyone. At best, this is just police brutality and the officer will hopefully be dealt with but chances are this is racially motivated and, given the area, I can only assume he'll be protected.

Sadly its the exceptions that make the viral rounds and young impressionable people online make ill informed opinions about it
until they need the police that is and all bets are off

Despite having no more information than anyone else has you can provide a valid opinion but everyone else who's opinion doesn't align with yours is "ill informed" because we don't have all the facts.

Officers aren't allowed to choke a suspect or use excessive force against someone who is unarmed and has put their hands up to show they aren't a threat.
The man was unarmed and held his hands up, you can't dispute these facts, you can't dispute that the man was apprehended and THEN choked, it's there in the video. You can't call on hypotheticals to cast aside facts to suit your bias, LT.

A teacher at my school legit did this to a 14 year old kid in my class for winding him up / laughing in class.
Some people unfortunately just snap like this.
Then again... Those people probably shouldn't be teachers. Or police officers.

Coincidentally a teacher who chased my husband down the stairs at school on one occasion and failed to get hold of him ended up as a teacher at my son's school. He told my husband my son was a lot better behaved than him. My husband asked how his anger management classes were going. :hehe:
You are absolutely right though, some people don't have the right temprement for some jobs.

Even American cops arent trained to choke criminals lol. Why would it matter what happened before the beginning of the video, the end point is inapporpriate in every single context imaginable.
