Get a shalllow bowl and fill it with water and put it out for the birds to bathe nd drink as this prolonged dry spell is hard for the birds.
Our birdbath is awash with birds drinking and bathing all day long.
Go do it now and keep it full up, not too deep just a few inches tops

I had to put sugar water out for 4 bees this weekend, the birds are all over my feeders as they are struggling to get anything out of the ground. Will put some water out now, didnt even think about that, thanks LT :clap1:

We've got one LT,I love to watch them bathe in it, the only trouble is the bloody cat keeps trying to get them,I am at a loss what to do to stop her ( I expect the get rid of her remarks, but its not an option) she has a bell on her collar and we have lights and wind chimes in the trees, but she has still managed to get a few, any tips?

Nothing you can do Kaz, cats are predators and so will hunt. Mine are the same, I hate them a little bit with each kill but it nature.

It's horrible AnnieK,I heard one squarking in the garden yesterday,I rushed out and the cat had it on the floor,I shooed her off ,the bird was still alive ,I got the cat in and made sure she couldn't get out again, I picked it up and stroked it,tried to calm it down,I placed it under a shady bush, hoping it would just fly off,but sadly I went out two hours later and it had died, I do get the cat in every night, but it's worse as we have a lot of trees around us,but I know it's nature but I hate the killing and if ever she gets the two robins that visit, she will be evicted.:fist::wavey:

cat owners, have you tried looking online for advice? any other tricks, apart from bells, to give birds a fighting chance?

I have, and they make special BIBS apparently mostly used in the States
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Small-Cat-Bib-Stops-Killing/dp/B004TW6OZA, not sure if they work ,might try one.
Or this might be better
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberator-Audio-Visual-Cat-Collar/dp/B009YWPH3K/ref=pd_cp_199_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009YWPH3K&pd_rd_r=7a0bfb2c-7e02-11e8-8043-7b656cff7de9&pd_rd_w=n8V0P&pd_rd_wg=f0ff2&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_p=3262852920272843952&pf_rd_r=PQZXC1NBSGE5N022N95D&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=PQZXC1NBSGE5N022N95D#productDetails
Has anyone used any of these ?

Interesting, Kaz. Some people praise the products, some don't. Hard to tell...

I bought a cat litter tray and filled that with water for birds on saturday. Thankfully there aren't many cats around here and my dog doesn't care if birds are in the garden so there are always birds swimming or drinking in the garden

Was going to mention seagulls when I first saw this thread. They're a real nuisance at this time of year. People are advised not to encourage them by feeding them.

as a general rule, seagulls can be a bit of an arsehole but like amy said, we can’t let them dehydrate and die

Those mentioning about the seagulls
Im terrified of them they swoop down and are really intimidating
That said the true reason they are worse at the moment then usual is its the time when their babies are born but because of the heat a lot of the baby seagulls are dying so the seagulls are very distressed
Im so scared of them but also feel very sorry for them
The only animal i cant justify is a wasp...evil

I have two seagulls who come to my garden EVERY single day because I always feed them. I find them so cute :joker: I've named them Sally and Pete. Blatantly married because they're never apart and their fave food is cheese.

Well, they dirtied their ticket when they started diving and attacking people at random
There was a bird in my garden kinda laying to one side and not doing anything when I got home from work there, I went out to see if it was ok and it never attempted to fly away or that so I went back out with some water and left it to it for a few mins, checked again and it seems fine now
Not sure if he was exhausted, thirsty or what but seems ok now

Don't forget the water for the hedgehogs
HUNDREDS of baby hedgehogs are dying of thirst in the endless 30C heatwave, experts warned today.
Gardeners are urged to help save them by leaving out saucers of water to drink after weeks with barely any rain.
