Row breaks out over giant baby Donald Trump blimp which will be flown over London during US president's visit.

A row has erupted after Sadiq Khan gave his permission for a giant balloon of Donald Trump to be flown over Westminster by protesters during the US President’s official visit to London.

The controversial decision has sparked outrage amongst pro Trump campaigners but has been widely applauded by those planning to protest the President’s visit.

The police and national air traffic service will have the final say on whether the unflattering portrayal of the President can take to the skies.

But Mr Khan has described the balloon as a symbol of “peaceful protest”.

:clap1::clap1::clap1: ^ THIS is exactly why I love you, A.J. - you are so balanced and fair. Trump is deeply flawed, but he is the democratically elected President of the United States, one of our closest allies, and as the Mayor of our Capital city, Kahn should dignify that office and show respect.

Far worse leaders than Trump have been received by the UK including Romania’s Nicolae Ceausescu, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

'Petty and silly' and 'disrespectful' are wonderfully apt descriptors.

How stupidly childish is this,we must be a laughing stock,he may not be liked by some, but there are much worse people than him who have visited, maybe this idiot mayor was too scared of the ramifications of doing it for more radical visitors, as bots said, a bigger person would not have allowed it, The mayor is happy to have Trump made a figure of fun, maybe he should be looking a little closer to home,it's bloody embarrassing.

They are all a bunch of morons throwing a tantrum and Sadiq should be sacked for being so unprofessional. That’s what we have as a major. He needs to direct his energies to tackling knife crime in London but would rather poke his tongue out at Trump. No wonder London is in such a state.

An awful lot of Americans spend good tourist money in London. By allowing this, the Mayor is letting his personal feelings override the well being and prosperity of the people he represents. By allowing this he is automatically generating bad feeling with a huge number of voters that chose Trump as their president and would have spent their $ in London.

That's exactly what I thought when the news article about this yesterday. Makes me wonder about people who planned and paid for this

And as Bots suggested it does make you wonder at the kind of petty fool the Mayor of London is.

If those who planned this and the mayor who approved think this makes them somehow better than Trump they're sadly mistaken.

Trump is all about "playground stuff". I'm not saying that I think it's clever or a good idea (mainly I think it's a waste of time), just that it's par for the course in politics these days, and "banning it" would be overly authoritarian. Freedom of expression is freedom of expression, for everyone, whether their message is "daft" or not. Really bugs me when people are all about being "non PC" and "freedom of speech"... But only when it suits.

Whether you like it or not; banning this silly blimp would be an example of "PC"..

He just seems like everything that you do not want your world leader to be - almost seems like an exaggeration sometimes.

In my opinion...
Yes to the baby trump balloon thing

Yes to potentially rubbing his hair with a balloon to make him look a twat
No to him being treated like a saint when he comes here

Trump was democratically elected.

Trump is legitimately the elected president of the United States.

Trump does represent the United States as an entity.

... Trump however CANNOT be described as representing the majority of US citizens. The figures show that he simply does not. He represents almost, but less than, half of them. Those are the figures and I have no idea how anyone can argue with cold hard numbers :joker:.

Quite ironic though when the protestors are clearly objecting to both the democratic election of Trump and his policies not popular with them. They are clearly hoping that such PC demonstrations will instill fear into the powers that be to overturn a democratic vote to pander to the PC brigade as has occurred so many times before. They only support free speech when it suits.

To begin with, officials in the London Mayor’s office were not super pumped about our application to fly an unflattering effigy of the US president over Parliament on 13th July, telling us that Trump Baby was “art” and inflatables did not qualify as legitimate protest. But there was nothing in the rules about not flying inflatables, and all our paperwork was in order. We began to wonder if this might not be an important test of the health and vitality of our democracy. So we started a petition to the Mayor to let Trump Baby fly – and the great British public did not disappoint. In under three weeks the petition has been signed by over 10,000 people, while our crowdfunder to cover the costs of the protest smashed its initial target in 48 hours, with money pouring in from every corner of Britain and beyond. Trump Baby seems to have captured the mood of the moment. It is therefore an honour and a privilege to be able to today confirm – Trump Baby will fly!

On the blimp thing my opinion is..Just because we’re allowed to do something doesn’t mean we always should.Trying to upset the leader of our biggest allied nation is’nt the brightest move.I think Khan would have been more responsible to say ‘maybe it’s not the appropriate time or place as we don’t want to offend other nations leaders when they visit. It would be embarrassing to say the least’

I think people like Londons mayor actually want us to fail as a nation after Brexit just so they Khan say ‘told ya so,left is best ner ner’.

The PC Lefties have been the ones that started this attempted control of free speech. Anything else is reacting to that and giving them a dose of their own medicine. Trump has every right to come here but when they attempt to stop him with such pathetic tactics they demonstrate without doubt their opposition to free speech when it is at odds with their own views.

So they can protest against free speech in a democratic society all they like but it will achieve nothing but expose them as a bunch of foot stampers determined to get their way. They won’t of course. Apart from anything else most are sick to death of them now and they just undermine their cause even more.

I agree it has been a fun read in more ways than one!

Not opposing Trump, that’s not the issue clearly. First they tried to stop him coming to Britain and when they failed they resorted to this nonsence. Not even a simple protest but one flying some insulting balloon like a gang of school bullies. If that is not an attempt to shut him down I don’t know what is.

Everyone knows who invented the made up buzzwords and instigated the propaganda.

Answer me this... why are they ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS proposals of good, progressive, positive or beneficial that these calls of PC and snowflake are used a a reaction to?

Think hard, I can't think of one, any positive reaction or suggestion would be virtue signalling, which is effectively speaking your mind in a fair, rational and unbiased manner.

So if being un pc is so great why does it only advocate things that are in a civilised society so damaging to so many already marginalised groups?

It won't shut him down... he's a world leader isn't he?
In the grand scheme of things it's a balloon, they are a group of protesters who disagree with him/his policies.

They can't stop him doing or saying anything.... he may be a representation for some as the embodiment of regression, he's sexist and prejudiced and doesn't appear to enjoy the notion of the free world.

For people like me who have known nothing but the advancement of rights and protections in the west the thought of someone potentially removing or rewinding that is quite unnerving.

People like stability, trump is unpredictable we have no clue what he will do yet, not do other world leaders, you can feel that. With trump in charge things just do not feel very balanced right now.

I would say this blimp is a reaction to that.

The buzzwords clearly came about as a reaction to PC attempting to dictate how we should all think and act on a number of subjects and shut down any and all debate. Then when they get their way they push some more and some more - not happy until they have got their way across the board. Try to control people and they tend to respond in an understandably negative way.

In a civilised society you don’t undermine the rights of one group to accommodate another. Tell me this if PC is so righteous why is there so much discord and opposition to it in every Western country. Calling them all racists and bigots is far too simplistic and just demonstrates not only an inability to listen to alternative views but a desire to simply shut them up and force them to tow the line. Doesn’t sound very civilised to me.

I'm not at all bothered. It's freedom of speech and it is much more likely to effect the political atmosphere there than here... would just be another headline in a never-ending news cycle for us. Anyway, Trump eats this stuff up and it only emboldens him... remember the lesson: Do Not Feed The Troll from your Welcome to The Internet pamplet... I feel like it should be in the school curriculum next to a caption with a picture of Trump grinning in front of his float. Oh well, parenting ftw.

OR.... to limit, debase and mock any rational discussion with one word or phrase.... negating any meaningful discussion or debate.

Everyone is capable of forming an opinion, who are the 'they'? if you are standing in my shoes you are 'they'... it's just someone who has a difference of opinion to you.

I wouldn't say however that what you consider PC is that powerful, when you consider that much of the mainstream media and the govt are currently quite anti PC, so in all seriousness how can they be calling all the shots?

By the same token as the racist and bigot accusation the snowflake and virtue signaler label is counter to that isn't it's no better and no worse....

However, to be accused of bigotry you have to have suggested something that marginalises, degrades or debases someone or group... to be accused of virtue signalling, well to me that kind of just means you made a comment that wasn't derogatory and was possibly helpful or informative in some way.
I fail to see how it is seen or construed as a negative?

There is so much discord atm because there is a widening gap between left thinkers and right thinkers, and some countries are lurching further and further right, Poland, Hungary, Italy, ..and I think sadly us too. It creating a gulf within Europe and here too.

I think we are in danger of losing our civility as our rights and protections are eroded, that is how I see this country going sadly, and as we enter brexit I don't trust this govt to respect those rights and protections.

That's why divisive politics are worrying as the saying goes 'divide and conquer' this is a time when the UK needs to be united and we are more diametrically opposed than ever! To everyone... the rest of the EU, the Scots, the poor, refugees literally everyone :/

The one thing that unites us at the moment is the NHS, it's like a religion in itself, a shining light of good that we can all relate to and be proud of.
There is literally nothing else.
