Channel 5 are teasing the new civilian series as “The original social experiment, featuring housemates from all walks of life entering a new-look Big Brother House” with a “whole new feel” #BBUK #CBB

Ben Frow: "I'm planning for a year without Big Brother" #EdTVFest

Talking about the schedule in general and not just Big Brother, C5 boss Ben Frow says: “You have to free up the schedule and open it up to new ideas. I am over quite a lot of things." #EdTVFest

Unless he means CH5 will take a year break and bring it back in 2020?

Yes but youve conviniently left out the next part of his quote. After saying hes planned for a year without it, hes also said "but never say never." Why would you selectively leave that part out other than to try and mislead people and bolster your conclusion that this will be the last ever. If he said he hasnt planned for a year without it, that would be foolish as it would put Endemol in a stronger negotiationg position as they would have him by the balls. Im not saying its necessarily looking great for a renewal but that was a very crucial remark that you purposely chose to leave out.

So it's taking a year off.

So it's not the last ever.

I personally think if C5 were to axe BB forever they'd be doing UBB2 - because we all know C5 love bringing back past housemates

they should leave ha for a year, bring BB20 back in the year 2020 and have all stars vs newbies and if it's **** leave ha alone

Basically, the BB contract hasn't been renewed yet and they can't put something without a contract into their schedule, therefore they will have planned some of 2019 without Big Brother. That's all he means

I don't understand why people want it cancelled on here.. like surely you're a fan of the show, why would you want to see it axed?

But there is a pretty high likelihood that the show wouldn't come back.. and if it's bought by MTV or a channel like that, it'll likely ditch the original format even further.

C5 are promising 'back to basics', and this should be our best hopes tbh

Some of us are thinking about actual longevity for the show rather that being thirsty for it being on every year, if it carries on the way it's going the show will get canceled and this time for good. But if its given a long needed break and picked up by someone who knows what they're doing then I can see it lasting.

wow it's almost like you can be a fan of a show and still recognize how awful it has gotten over the years

I'm optimistic that ratings can recover a bit if this series goes on well, since Civilian BB will follow CBB which usually rates better.

I can understand people thinking a one/two year break will boost the quality of the show, but the way some people speak, it's as though they want the show permanently cancelled. "Dead format" and the likes comments..

I agree with you, its not more likely to return if its cancelled, thats just a ridiculous notion perpetuated on this forum-- theres a good chance if it goes it wont ever come back . I also think the show is still great, though there are some things I dont like or agree with its still my favorite show , period, and Im so happy its on the air and love watching it. I dont know why the majority of the vocal people on this forum are so negative and slag it off to the degree they do, they act like spoiled children having a rant. Times change, life changes, its never gonna be what it was. Just enjoy that its still around and for what it is and dont be so nitpicky.

I don't want it to end, ever. I don't care if it's messy sometimes, it's just that I love this show a lot (ok they can scrap CBB I don't mind). The possibilities are endless when it comes to content, entertainment, mixing characters etc... I take the show for what it is. The old days are gone, we all had time to adjust I guess.
But if it's the last series, making it All Stars from C4 and C5 and call it a day. Don't leave on a regular BB, go with a bang and go crazy on everything. Make it count for good (ie don't make it super short like UBB and throw 20 housemates in hoping it would be phenomenal)

The amount of money that it must cost them to do two cbbs a year when they’re hardly ever good outside of the one or two novelty housemates, they could just put it all into a long and relatively traditional civilian series to keep it fresh and amazing

My thing with CBB is that to me it is less genuine than the civilian one. Somehow they all know each other, they are all "acting" to what they think the public would like them to be until they eventually become more real. And 4 weeks are not enough for all the characters to open up and display true evolution.
Take this current series for example, they are all there due to some "storm" and they got into arguments (OK, Natalie started them) about what they did or did not do, and their reputation.

Civilian BB is really the ultimate social experiment, even though it lost its spark for more "reality tv" scenes. But eventually it had to happen because young people now know reality tv, they were born in it, they know what works for the cameras. I believe up until BB7 people were more clueless about it.
And it's not just the UK. In France we face the same thing, and new shows like Love Island or more scripted ones took over.

Anyway, don't cancel BB!

It's weird how C5 seem like they would rather keep CBB than Civilian BB, when the latter is so much more budget-for-money. It's slightly less viewers ofc, but there is no massive fees to get HMs to appear.

BigBrudder

People keep saying scrap one CBB to save money but the reason they do the summer CBB right after (or this year, right before) is because all of the production is already in motion therefore it works better for them due to economies of scale for hiring, etc.
