Any forum members who cant?

Why is it so many people can't swim?

Its a basic skill..Like riding a bike.

I mean, being physically disabled can prevent people from such physical exercises

I think that's the only legitimate reason for someone not being able.

I went on holiday to Turkey with a non swimmer who was from London and he wore arm bands.

I mean...

I can't swim. Went every week in junior school for 4 years, just can't do it. Neither can my sister.

I'm not even afraid of water or anything, just can't grasp swimming.

Why is it that so many Londoners cannot swim?

I lived in London for 7 years after moving from Wales.. the basic thing growing up was to be able to swim and was taught in school I was shocked when I met so many people who cant.

Its a basic skill..Like riding a bike.

Akeem had arm bands on NOT Isaac

Edited the title sorry but we have had no updates so its pretty hard to learn these housemates names.

The fact that Akeem cant swim and hes from Wales though :nono: My response to the situation is actually worse.

'Basic skill'

It just depends whether you've learnt to or not. I can't ride a bike because I've never learned...

:nono: We've been trying for years to get my eldest swimming but she still can't (she's nearly 9). She suffered perforated eardrum when she was 5 or 6 and for a while after that had problems with ear infections / water getting trapped (which was very painful) if she ever got water in her ears and now basically has a phobia of her ears going under water... she all she can do is a very ineffective doggy paddle with her head bobbing around above the water line. We try constantly but it's become like a reflex, and professional swimming teachers can't get her to stop doing it either .

To be fair, she also couldn't ride a bike until last summer (this time, through fear of falling  ) but then it clicked really spontaneously. Like she went from barely being able to balance, to cycling along the road, in the space of 10 minutes. It was bizarre. We now cycle to school every day and they've just done their school cycling proficiency thing and she came 2nd in the class for the balance / control game they did at the end.

So I guess there's hope that one day she'll simply swim off across the pool like a little fishy.

yes because that is exactly what I am talking about..also the girl who had her legs bitten off in a shark attack when she was 8 - disgraceful that she now is scared stiff of water and cant swim at 18 or the guy in an iron lung 24/7 ...etc etc

I am talking about people with no excuses (or lame ones)

Das racist

Anyway, more importantly, LOOK at your post count when I read this post :omgno:

You'll need to make over 11,000 more posts before this momentous occasion can be repeated. I'm frankly bowled over. I can't wait until I hit 22,222 and am really upset that I missed 11,111 :(

Well done to her, she has conquered cycling , passed her test , so i do hope she will keep trying with the swimming . Good luck to her.

It's debatable whether being able to swim leads to fewer drownings.

It may be if a person is over-confident in their swimming ability they put themselves in situations where they are more at risk.

how many people have swimmers saved from drowning?

what you are referring to is almost always a young man showing off or trying to be too brave

and they die all over the shop doing that not just in water

it's sensible for a parent to teach their kids to swim, but it's not a life requirement.

It's in the same category to me as learning to drive. Nice if you can do it, but no great shakes if you can't

just awful

its not really only on the parents. You can learn to swim at any point in your life.

People can have phobias which stop them being able to learn to swim. My auntie was knocked underwater by a dog when she was paddling as a young child, which created a fear of water in her. Then when she was supposed to be learning at school her fear made her refuse to get into the water, so her teacher picked her up and threw her in, increasing her anxiety tremendously. She gets into pools with her own children, as she sees the importance of swimming for them, but she can't take her feet off the bottom in order to learn herself.

and they die all over the shop doing that not just in waterWell another one is people thinking that because they can swim in their suit in a pool / in a wetsuit in open water, that they can also easily swim easily in a potential drowning situation. The reality is that fully clothed and wearing shoes (which would be most emergency situations), even competent swimmers can sink like a stone.
