View Full Version : Do fans hold biases towards gender/sexuality/race when watching reality TV shows

I see it being suggested a lot, usually: ‘people wouldn’t like him if he was a black woman’ or ‘people would love him if he was a black woman’

Is there actually truth in it? Do you, or do you believe others use physical attributes as a way to help determine a favourite or a least favourite? And why? Do you think its a conscious thing, or do you think some are unconsciously drawn to a certain type of person?

Never really known what side of the fence to sit on... there does seem to be exceptions to every claim, but I have also seen the blatant reasons people are making the claims in the first place.

I like housemates who have layers to them, who are not afraid to show their flaws, I don't care whether they are of any particular colour or size, male or female, in this series I like Zoe,Lewis,Cameron and Brooke all very different imo.so for me it's no .

Clearly some do, as they do in all walks of life.

How many do you think some is?

Enough to drastically change the outcome of the show, or just the rare few? Or a lot of people but their biases cancel each other out?!

You should like and support who you like, based on the person involved, some on here only support mouthy black women and in the case of CBB become mega fans of people before they come in and before they've seen them warts and all ,I judge them on what they give to the show and their personalities and fairness

A few close evictions here and there.

Though some biases will cancel each other out.

e.g. Orlaith (attractive white female) vs Science (argumentative black male).

Well i think those things must have some effect as they all add to the whole package of a persons character.
I don’t buy that ‘so and so was only voted out cos they are black’.You’d have to be a very shallow person who’s not taken any time to invest in the housemates character to vote like that.

I do think these traits have helped people win though.Nadia for instance.

That Cristian twat is the best example to prove it exists I think. There is no reason that bloke should have had even one fan.

He only had about 5 minutes airtime a week and it was entirely negative.

But then again, tan and 6 pack.

But, he was first out in the final anyway so maybe i was just paying a lot of attention to his few fans.

I just like people for who they are...colour is irrelevant to me. I like someone who entertains..has opinions and fair minded. As far as BB is concerned I may like the quiet fence sitters but they wont get my support if they do nothing.

There’s a lot of bias based on physical attributes too. People have said they save Lewis because of his looks and that is very shallow and wrong.

Ive not seen one person say that ...One maybe did want him saved because of his looks, but that isn't my reason for liking him, even though no one can deny he is stunning looking, that only a small part of him

When this series started there was a positive bias for Tomasz because he was gender-fluid.

I thought he was ok but not to the extent that others were going crazy for him.

I think they liked him for what he 'represents' rather than him as a individual.

However, now the rose-tinted glasses seem to be off and people see Tomasz for who he is.

I always see positive bias for LGBT contestants, just because they are LGBT

Everyone picks their favourite or least favourite for so many different complex reasons, it's just not possible to answer.

If one picks a favourite housemate for a single cosmetic reason, it says more about the viewer than of the housemate.

Some members certainly do.

As chuff correctly said there are a few forum members that will support a black woman on first impressions and through thick and thin, regardless of how she acts.

There is also a member or two that will support the 'attractive white dude' regardless of how he acts, and whether he is entertaining [then its time to get the bores out], but then again will support him if hes a mega dullard [aka Cristian, and then its time to get the camera hoggers out].

You notice patterns with certain members.

Nobody is forcing you to have a favourite at all, it's a free choice.

People are just fearful of not being part of a group, a need of belonging to something.

I'm an individualist myself, so my favourite and least favourite can change from week to week or day to day.

Just no need for that response,we can't see everything that is posted, how silly we all have real lives that have to be dealt with, which is far more important than a BB game, why insult someone just because they don't like who you like ? it doesn't make your post anymore credible.

Mainly gender based this series. How it s OK for Guys to stand up for themselves, be aggressive, but not OK for Women to do so, with too many. That s why Kenaley evicted and audience, lot of them, shouting " Get Zoe out " last night. Its cos they re not bright enough and have been brainwashed since birth by Owners of Media teaching them that guys can do that but not Women, all part of the many divide and conquer tactics Super Rich Owners of Media use that their employees too scared about losing their jobs if they don t carry the nasty opinions and propaganda of their Super Rich Owners of most Media, it s all cos too many are too stupid they can be brainwashed to think that way and act like that most of their loves, although too many like that, still thank goodness Maj aren t able to be Brainwashed to act nastily like that, though of coarse Maj moronic enough to be able to be brainwashed we are a Democracy even though they complain all time about how corrupt Media is and how no party ever gets into Govt in UK with anything like Maj of support form those registered to vote which is necessary to be a true Democracy. Lets hope not enough brainwashed by the 90 % Tory Biased Media to let the brainwashed himself by that Media idiot hes not really that bright Cameron win. That d be mindnumbingly boring and predictable if enough are brainwashed enough by Media which really is over 90% biased to Tories for interests of their Tax Avoiding Maj of Owners of Media if you check it out if Cameron is backed to win.

By far the best hm8s, the ego has been left behind years ago in most cases as they've learned an over inflated ego gets you nowhere

I could also never understand why some housemates are deemed as winners before they even enter the house and no matter what their behaviour is they are excused, aren't we supposed to study them interacting and see their flaws and all and decide if we like them or not,you just KNOW who some people are going to champion before it even starts ,it's got that predictable.

i always laugh when fan club threads appear and people sign up to them, and they don't even know the housemates name yet

I definitely am biased towards the Irish HMs, I don't always like them but I do try to [emoji23] other than that I wouldn't say any other factors play a part on whether I like them or (race, sex, sexuality etc)

Yes, ofc. Reality TV ultimately reflects (or attempts to) reflect society, and unfortunately I don't think there is a single person on this planet who could claim they don't have a bias of some kind, even if it is minor or subconscious.

What matters is what you do about it -- ie. give in, or fight your own biases and treat people fairly

In life some people hold those prejudices or bias so of course some would hold those when watching a show.

The best sort of shows I watch are messy reality shows such as Love and Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, Flavor Of Love etc so I'm always going to support a feisty woman

Bros and laddy housemates just don't appeal to me
