View Full Version : Januarys CBB was the final nail in the coffin

IMO it was the series that ended the show. So incredibly dull - literally nothing happened. Weren’t some of the ratings almost 1 million less than the previous series (Kim Woodburn)

I know that civilian is the reason the show was made but no one can tell me those messy January CBBs didn’t have at least 3 more years to give. CBB17 is still talked about all over the world

RIP BB, it was fun while it lasted but they should of kept January CBB

I agree it was tragic, but the show was already slowly losing viewers during the horror of CBB18 so it was bound to slip eventually

I also think nastiness being mistaken for entertainment has also been a huge factor. See Helen and the possible Lewis win. The sucesss of these people really has shown a complete switch in what big brother fans want. The producers then try to cater to it and be controversial as possible and it’s made a lot of fans drift off

No. One lowkey series in a sea of OTT trash didn't kill the show.

I get what you’re saying. Those ridiculously messy January CBB’s could have sustained themselves I think. Such a shame we won’t be getting one in January. They’re usually the only series of the year I really love.

I didn't like all that Year of The Woman bollocks. But it was quite a good series other than that.

It was pretty dull but at the time it got a lot of credit for being an intelligent old school series. I remember Emma even saying it might have been the best series ever although she's obviously had her fair share of suspect opinions

ddd did she actually say that? Cancelled

Also what part of cbb21 was old school, outside of it being eerily as boring as bb4?

A focus on housemate interaction and conversation over showmance and OTT tasks "who said this?" etc although the series didn't escape that trash entirely.

Pretty much and the year of the woman thing actually worked quite well at the start when the female housemates all discussed their different ideas of feminism etc and the representation was quite diverse from trans India to glamour model Jess to old Tory Christian Ann and then Shane/Courtney when he entered

Enjoyed the series a lot, was refreshing to see the show actually talk about serious issues rather than kick straight off with stripping, bedwetting and instant showmance. India really should've survived over Jonny, though.

It's definitely in my top half of CBBs because there were plenty of funny, intelligent (or both) housemates. There might not have been much in the way of explosive moments but I'd rather watch something organic and compelling than the same old shrieking bitch every night (see: Natalie Nunn, Farrah/Austin, Speidi)

The show didn’t really tackle the issues tho, it was the people watching that sparked the conversations. Iirc most of it was around India, but non of it was actually discussed critically on the show outside of ginuwine saying he wouldn’t date a trans girl. There were a lot of debates on social media but the most that happened in the house was Andrew and Courtney bitching about Ann’s opinions behind her back.

The series still had rabid attention seekers. Andrew Brady is one of the more fame hungry people to ever come on Cbb. The issue was there were like 3 people desperate for camera time and everyone else just wanted an easy paycheck. People were only quieter because they didn’t want to be there, not because they were having intelligent conversation. People were also quieter because they wanted to clear their name after their manager told them how bad their rep is. Dapper laughs is the biggest example of this. Actively did **** all so he could show he’s some changed person or whatever. Even Ashley tried some showmance but because of how uninteresting the pair were it was swiftly forgotten. If you watch the debate task back production were trying so hard to get them to have intelligent discussions but it never happened outside of a few tedious monologues from Courtney. The first week was far better and more promising imo, like day 1 they had that que card task where they were all sharing their opinions about gender related stuff and sharing experiences and it was genuinely interesting. You can watch it back, this never happened again.

This series had the same vapid soulless desperate fame seekers, but without any of the zest that has made for good tv for the past like 18 years. The only housemate that ever came close to anything classic big brother was India. A genuinely involved, layered, intriguing character. That lasted for what, 10 days? She could’ve been the catalyst for a lot of interesting **** for this series, yet instead 14 or so housemates managed to coast to a toasty paycheck doing **** all and giving us one of the most dull series ever. I rmemeber Rachel, John and malika saying in interviews that they’re told to say it was a life changing experience ect but secretly they couldn’t stand it and just wanted the money. It’s kinda annoying this absolute snooze fest was misconstrued as an intelligent, reserved, back to basics series. An absolute INSULT to the prime of this fantastic show.

Tbh it all started with CBB19. 13, 15 & 17 were huge and January CBB’s were the jewel in the crown, but then they started messing about with half all stars and then all women. They should’ve did these twists in the lesser important summer CBB. CBB22 was pretty much a classic January series, and if that had been CBB19 then I think things would be very different

CBB19 would've had exceptional ratings if it aired in 2016. All-stars was a highly requested theme of the show. It was only after the hugely negative and deserving backlash against CBB18 that many gave the January CBB after a pass

2012 is the best actually. It Had the Best C5 Civilian series, Arguably the best CBB Winter Series and a Great Summer CBB.

2018 had a Terrible and Dull Winter CBB, Followed by a Fantastic Summer CBB, Before ending with an Above Average Civilian series

I flat out dont like 14, garbage.

17 was ok, but massively overrated.

13 and 18 were great, but had too many awful housemates.

19 was just refreshing, I liked most of them and looked forward to watching every night.

It's actually one of the rare C5 series I watched from start to finish. I normally get bored or I'm too busy to watch a full CBB series. But I always made sure to watch this one every night.

I thought it was a really refreshing dynamic that the housemates genuinely got on, and I enjoyed watching the majority of housemates to some extent. Was a really strong cast with a lot of good moments without being overtly obnoxious in a typical way that relies of heated confrontation. Obviously a fabulous winner, too

There were a lot of debates on social media but the most that happened in the house was Andrew and Courtney bitching about Ann’s opinions behind her back.

The first week in particular had a lot of discussion about sexual harassment (mostly between John, Rachel, Ann, Amanda and Maggie), marriage rights (obviously between Courtney and Ann), trans identity, misgendering and the differences between types of feminism (obviously between India, Rachel, Courtney, Ginuwine, and pretty much the whole house), drag and gender vs. sex (Courtney/Ann/Andrew/India), Brexit (Jess, Ann), football's dealings with homophobia (John), the whole Yewtree thing (Maggie)...

To write off the whole series as more "talked about than having any discussion inside it" seems weirdly ignorant of the multiple occasions where India was referred to as 'he' (by mistake, by Ann/Rachel), the extent of her surgery, Courtney discussing the difference between sex and gender (whilst patiently putting the dragphobia thing to the side)... etc.

The series still had rabid attention seekers. Andrew Brady is one of the more fame hungry people to ever come on Cbb. The issue was there were like 3 people desperate for camera time and everyone else just wanted an easy paycheck. You can watch it back, this never happened again.

As I said, I remember otherwise. There was a live feed in particular that was pretty enlightening - they were playing some form of (obviously prompted, lol) drinking game that involved talking about topics out of a hat and, whilst it might have been coerced by production, it was actually interesting to watch. Wayne, Amanda, Ann, Maggie, John, Rachel, Shane, Malika, Courtney and even Dapper/Jonny all had a pretty healthy input into discussion and the house just felt like an actual community with layers.

Sure, there were the duds (Ashley, Jonny, Jess, Dapper) and Andrew was excruciatingly try-hard, but I'll take 5 out of 16 any day.

This series had the same vapid soulless desperate fame seekers, but without any of the zest that has made for good tv for the past like 18 years. I wouldn't describe any of: Ann, Amanda, Wayne, Maggie, Rachel, John, Courtney or Shane L as "vapid or soulless", to be honest, and not many of them "desperate fame seekers" either. To complain of fame-seeking on...Celebrity Big Brother seems an odd battle to pick, anyway, but this was one of the casts with a far better ratio of "actual talent vs. wannabes" than most.

You seem pretty unreasonable so I'll just leave it there. I liked it and you didn't.

Yeah but the all stars were **** and they literally had jasmine waltz, austin armacost, stacy francis and brandon block in the same series, 4 of the least known cbb housemates ever who were joined by speidi & nicola mclean, also unknown to most non-BB viewers in the UK.

Not exactly appealing for the british public, especially since half were american as well which may have not been so bad if the americans were actually known

yeah the January series was truly awful and the BB4 of Celebrity Big Brother.

Ann was a great housemate but she squandered a lot of the opportunities for both fun and arguments by shutting everything down immediately, and because her personality was so overpowering it really did ruin the series so I'm conflicted on how to feel about her.

Courtney was a lovely presence in the house and on "Courtney nights" I instinctively felt more excitable watching the show. I enjoyed Shane J's friendship with Malika but although I found the whole dynamic with Andrew captivating at first, it eventually rubbed me the wrong way.

India and Rachel were great housemates who should've stayed longer, but were chosen to leave over the likes of Jonny and John Barnes, which I don't for the life of me understand.

basically, this season could've been good but it went wrong at every turn

Wasn’t it a collaborative idea between Endemol and Channel 5 though? They had all that women’s suffrage programming and didn’t some of the cast thank C5 after they came out for sticking to their word?

The rot set in a long time ago (largely due to overexposure), I honestly don’t think upon reflection anything was saving the show this year. Ben Frow has been publicly slagging it off for almost two years and making ridiculous demands that were obviously and thankfully not going to be met, so he pulled the plug.

Channel 5 got what they wanted from this show. A staple that they could churn out over and over again whilst building their audience, milk the whole thing dry and then toss it to the curb like a pile of ****. A diabolical network

CBBUS may not of had the best outcome but it was miles better than CBB21. It was also way more talked about, I didn’t see any gifs/posts about CBB21 other than Ann trying to straighten her hair and Courtney winning (Purely for her being a drag queen, respectively, but not for the popularity of the series itself)
