82. Bitch I'm Madonna (ft. Nicki Minaj)
7hPMmzKs62w
Simply atrocious. I heard this the first time recently, and as someone who's been working through M's discography from start to finish, I am just shocked (and disappointed?) that such an icon could release such an awful song. Horrible, dated production, terrible lyrics, and an all-round busted concept.

81. Revolver (ft. Lil' Wayne)
HxmFNMzLtFg
Sickly sweet production, awful lyrics, and ****ing Lil' Wayne. Foreshadowing her 2010s output?

80. Die Another Day
VlbaJA7aO9M
Bond themes to me generally suck, but she made one of the worst ones. How?

79. Love Profusion
PgDFGubdxXk
'I've got you...underneath my skin' isn't a substitute for quality lyrical content! Honestly, Love Profusion just puts me to sleep. It's as though it never really goes anywhere.

78. Living For Love
u9h7Teiyvc8
It's cute in parts I guess, but others are just voids. I really begrudge M releasing such an underwhelming lead single.

77. Hey You
3I_PTstznZk
Completely discardable.

76. Masterpiece
kMT7MrskynU
Forgettable melody mixed with unbearable lyrics.

That's enough weak drags for now!

75. Hold Tight
JF7H0-Pcbms
Just another 2010s Madonna track that is forgettable and showcases production that really doesn't showcase Madonna.

74. American Pie
X4RDB-mMDJg
Boring.

73. What It Feels Like For a Girl (single version)
qYwgG2oyUbA
The album version of WIFLFAG is GORGEOUS, but the single version to me is sadly...nothingness. A beat, with little lyrical content. It's a shame, because the video is great.

72. Turn Up The Radio
vkYyqxHdwNg
I literally feel like I'm weeding a beautiful garden at this point.

71. Give Me All Your Luvin' (ft. MIA and Nicki Minaj)
cItHOl5LRWg
Cute, but underbaked. And similarly to Living for Love, pretty scarily underwhelming when you place it next to M's other leads.

Ross.
05-02-2019, 11:16 PM

70. Give It 2 Me (ft. Pharrell)
aQRLSBUNupg
I can't lie, I bopped a bit in 2008, and I bop a bit now. The production is awesome, but I'm really not a fan of Madonna's voice or lyrics on this track.

69. True Blue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P51LunEV3Sk
Not only is this the first twentieth century track to fall out, but I'm jumping all the way back to 1986. True Blue has never clicked with me - it's overly cheesy, and too slight to go any higher for me.

68. Ghosttown
GgDxv0Qg_Rg
Ghosttown is fine, but it really falls behind when compared to Madonna's more memorable ballads.

67. Dear Jessie
EGYmN-1UQzI
A cute, novel track, but I can't justify placing it any higher.

66. Beautiful Stranger
Dsh0TfIKhoE
I listened again today, and I bopped a little. It's typically late-nineties for M: good production, clean vocals... It just hasn't quite clicked with me.

65. Nothing Fails
wBaoOfbh3hY
There's potential here. It's better than Love Profusion, but doesn't compare to Hollywood.

64/63/62. You Must Love Me / Don't Cry For Me Argentina / Another Suitcase In Another Hall
KD_1Z8iUDho
Madonna's vocals in Evita are sublime. Sadly, I'm not a huge fan of the soundtrack itself, and so I'm quite happy to discard these three in one go.

61. Who's That Girl
Zi8U2S-2-Cc
I find this track a wee bit annoying. Certainly underwhelming compared to the other WTG singles.

TomC
06-02-2019, 10:28 AM
60. Everybody
cOqr_x_9fMc
Ahhh, M's debut single. It's a pleasant little track, but not a lot more. It's my second least favourite on her debut album. I just find the chorus pretty repetitive and draining, and the refrain in the last chorus is really not great in my opinion.

59. La Isla Bonita
zpzdgmqIHOQ
I can't deny that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and entirely iconic Madonna track. For some reason I just don't get into it as much as most of her other 80s/90s output.

58. Hanky Panky
AFSx9fE1qJ8
It's nice to hear Madonna do something a bit different here. A fun little track.

57. Girl Gone Wild
tYkwziTrv5o
Well, I bop. This track is SO 2012. It's probably the best imitation of the contemporary music scene Madonna has done in her career recently. It's my favourite post-Celebration single of hers, but obviously that doesn't say a lot.

56. Spotlight
1if8j9tRIN0
I love the 80s sound here, but it's just not that memorable. It's kind of an inferior Lucky Star.

Nancy.
06-02-2019, 10:48 AM
TomC, interesting rankings, but "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" and "One More Chance" should've gone ages ago, and I would've saved "La Isla Bonita" and "Who's That Girl" for the top 20. They are classic Madonna songs.

I think "Spotlight" sounds more like "Holiday" than "Lucky Star".

55. This Used to be my Playground
RhXDO2a3-sE
A lovely, emotive ballad.

54. The Look of Love
WIcaIEjXpwg
This song very effectively straddles being an heart-wrenching ballad and a BOP.

53. You'll See
zyFzpBAZICc
Really beautiful. It's very subtle, and it works well.

52. Take A Bow
XDeiovnCv1o
TAB is obviously very iconic, and a good song in its own right. I just find it a wee bit twee.

51. Crazy For You
DHutZXREZ0E
That chorus! It is a blend of sexy and emotive. Unfortunately, it's never impressed upon me enough to crack the top fifty.

Wow, a ballad cull!

50. Live To Tell
IzAO9A9GjgI
This song has incredible potential. The only thing that lets it down for me is that I'm not a fan of the 'a man can tell a thousand lies' segment of each chorus.

49. Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes (ft. Timbaland & Madonna)
aAQZPBwz2CI
The world bopped to this in 2008, and rightly so. It just...it's not a Madonna song. It's so wrong that at least half the lyrics are sung by JT, and it has little semblance of classic Madonna.

48. One More Chance
VI61BMjAVuo
Absolutely beautiful. So mellow. A tad forgettable perhaps.

47. Fever (single version)
P0kJ3r9j5MQ
I'm more well-acquainted with the album version, but this re-working of a cover is so...warm and sexy. It complements Erotica so well.

46. Bedtime Story
CSaFgAwnRSc
This is one of M's more bold singles, which really says something. I love what she was trying to do here, and the MV is art. I just feel that the production is a trifle underbaked, meaning I've never entirely connected with it.

This song is so warm and easy to listen to. It really takes me back to my mother having Hard Candy playing in the car.

44. Causing A Commotion
Ud3x2wz3WHA
Such a gorgeous classic 80s sound.

43. Get Together
ObjtMmTRyrM
ANother song with huge potential that I feel isn't quite done justice with the production. It's a bit too slight and muffled I feel, so it only gets half way to full bop capacity.

42. Gambler
ypokLDY_j6M
I love this. It's so in-keeping with M's self-titled/LAV sound.

This thread is BACK to take the spotlight!

40. American Life
1CWXjk40yWE
This is a track with brilliant potential. The production and concept are both fantastic. It's just that the lyrics are...laughably bad in places. I'm trying to learn to enjoy "I'M DRINKIN A SOY LATTE,, I GET A DOUBLE SHOT-AY, IT GOES RIGHT THROUGH MY BODY" unironically.

39. Express Yourself
GsVcUzP_O_8
Iconic, of course. Perhaps a little too campy for me though.

38. Jump
Rx0mYN32Kps
Jump's chorus is so instant, and it's such a pleasant listen.

37. Celebration (Benny Benassi Remix)
lWTDR6ztcnQ
I decided to include the Benny Benassi Remix in the rankings because it's the one that accompanies the MV and it's the one I've always listened to. It's been a staple in my running playlist for the last decade! Madonna sounds sexy and fierce here, the production is so strong, and it really makes you wanna party with her.

36. I'll Remember
R0cfZczo4yk
Such a beautiful ballad. The chord progression that begins from the first bar is very entrancing.

NryVGPBNNf8
It seems that a different arrangement was used for the MV, but the rendition in the above video is just gorgeous. The melody, vocals, silky production blend together so smoothly to create such a beautiful sonic landscape.

34. Hung Up
EDwb9jOVRtU
Madonna's most iconic post-Music song, for sure. Madonna certainly put her own stamp on that sample, but to me it isn't quite individualistic enough. I bop, but I don't bop hard.

33. Sorry
B5OPMI13qng
Je suis desolee... Lo siento... This song is high energy and a lot of fun.

32. Keep It Together
mHek0kaNXjY
The first 20 seconds or so of this song are incredible... All of the layers joining the song to create dance-funk-pop perfection. It has such a cute message too.

31. Angel
J7W3oVF4O1Q
It's kind of LAV's more complex sister? It's a cute little track, but it's not quite good enough to break this iconic top thirty.

BBB is so slept on! The beat is bop-worthy, the bass line is great (as with most Erotica songs), and M's pitched vocals really take you back. Great lyrics too <3

29. Rescue Me
uz6yxSe4iEI
Such a strong track, with so many intriguing component parts. Also, these are probably some of the best vocals Madonna's ever offered?

28. Holiday
5Rswx2Z7SDw
Quite possibly M's most enduring track. For some reason, it takes me back to my noughties childhood. I do feel it's suffered in my mind from over-exposure a little.

27. Material Girl
6p-lDYPR2P8
Another ICONIC Madonna track. It's just a purely campy, strong BOP.

26. Cherish

25. Hollywood
uaNLvjCkYDE
My highest-ranking post-Music single; this track just works. The lyrics are simple but effectively, and the guitar chord procession is so familiar. I bloody love that key change too. The "push the button; don't push the button" segment is amazing, and then it comes back with really heavy synth. It's just an epic track.

24. Like A Virgin
s__rX_WL100
ICONIC song. The lyrics are so timeless. That bass that runs through the whole track. The horny sound. It's just sooo... cyclical, but in the best way.

23. Nothing Really Matters
cAVx9RKaLPU
It took this bop a while to click with me, but when it did, it hit me hard. Although it's my lowest-ranking ROL single, it's an understated yet perfect piece of dance music.

EPHUZenprKc
Although Madonna's take on RnB was a bit undercooked at places on Bedtime Stories, it is SPOT ON in Secret. The lyrics are so heartfelt, and the guitar is so warm. Brilliance.

Not only is this the first twentieth century track to fall out, but I'm jumping all the way back to 1986. True Blue has never clicked with me - it's overly cheesy, and too slight to go any higher for me.

I can't deny that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and entirely iconic Madonna track. For some reason I just don't get into it as much as most of her other 80s/90s output.

57. Girl Gone Wild
tYkwziTrv5o
Well, I bop. This track is SO 2012. It's probably the best imitation of the contemporary music scene Madonna has done in her career recently. It's my favourite post-Celebration single of hers, but obviously that doesn't say a lot.

20. The Power of Good-Bye
NHydngA5C4E
It's like the other pea in the pod with Frozen. Her vocals here are sublime. And that string crescendo for the bridge is just incredible.

19. Papa Don't Preach
G333Is7VPOg
You can really strut down the street to Papa Don't Preach. The strings, bassline and beat come together so well. The hook is intoxicating. A pop masterpiece!

18. Don't Tell Me
FRLHro9EPD0
"Please dont...Please don't...Please don't tell me to stop...Don't you...ever....Don't Ever tell me to stop". Ugh this bit where madonna is dancing surrounded by hot guys  This is a simple song, but the beat mixed with the country guitar is a combination I never thought I needed. I live for it.

17. Frozen
XS088Opj9o0
This song is equally poweful and mysterious. The message is sooo strong too.

16. Drowned World/Substitute for Love

The intro to Drowned World honestly gives me goosebumps. It is such a perfect opener for ROL. You can really here the emotion in M's voice.

15. Rain
15kWlTrpt5k
Erotica truly is the gift that keeps on giving. Rain has skyrocketed to be perhaps my favourite Madonna ballad. From the first second, you are hooked, and the instrumental, and Madonna's vocals capture here 'rain' so perfectly. Those key changes ugh!

14. Open Your Heart
snsTmi9N9Gs
Open Your Heart is euphoria. It's so strong and joyful. The perfect song to make you feel better on a down day. <3

13. Borderline
rSaC-YbSDpo
That twinkling synth melody that plays from the first second, the beat, the bassline, Madonna's youthful vocals <3 This song was one of my favourites when mum used to play the Immaculate Collection, and it remains a golden track. It's such a good track to scream along to. There's something so...comforting in Borderline?

12. Ray of Light
x3ov9USxVxY
I 'discovered' Ray of Light a few months ago, and quite incredibly, it unlocked a memory of the song from my childhood. I suddenly remembered this song I had no idea I'd forgotten... ROL is another completely euphoric track. The soundscape is unique and captivating.

11. Dress You Up
mWtpd8mS5jw
I have one minor criticism with this song, and that's that i feel the production takes some strength and clarity out of M's vocals in the chorus. Other than that, it is a brilliant track. That bassline is just so 80s. It's pretty near to the perfect 80s pop song.

10. Like A Prayer
79fzeNUqQbQ
Probably the biggest 'anthem' of her career. When the choir comes in singing "just like a prayer I'll take you there...it's like a dream to me". The song is such a whirlwind of emotions, and the video is incredible too.

9. Human Nature
XPL_qGqSJxA
Definitely one of the most out-there, strong and liberating songs of M's career. I bloody love the chord progression, the beat, the lyrics... I even love that the lyrics don't always rhyme <3

8. Burning Up
pufec0Hps00
The rock-inspired guitar riffs, the bassline, and Madonna's strong, quick and cutting vocals are what makes Burning Up. It's such a collossal bop, and such a step up from her debut single.

7. Bad Girl
JUII7DTACf4
I'm really conflicted about taking this out at #7 because I ADORE it, but I'm just feeling the other six that little bit more atm. All of them are perfect from here on out anyway. From the moment that beat, and then the piano comes in I have goosebumps. Madonna's vocals are so strong and emotive here, and the instrumental is unbelievably powerful and unique. It captures so perfectly the essence of "Smoke too many cigarettes today, I'm not happy when I act this way..." Coupled with the video, she really created something special hear. A power ballad if I ever heard one!

6. Lucky Star
ThHz9wlBeLU
From the twinkling synths the song starts with, it's not difficult to understand that this is one of Madonna's very best dance tracks. The synths combine to perfectly convey loved-up ecstasy. The bassline and M's vocals make the sound very classy, and almost...superior? Madonna really is THAT GIRL on Lucky Star.

4. Deeper and Deeper
sJV29ZQIUhs
Probably my favourite song by M that speaks to my queerness. It's Vogue's sister that showcases some rather different qualities. This song is just so vivacious in its lyricism, the verve with which M sings, and that house beat and pumping synth. The song is just unadultered joy, preaching self-love. I bloody love the flamenco section, and the Vogue reference. It's just a bloody anthem of epic proportions.

3. Justify My Love
Np_Y740aReI
The comments under the video often describe JML as the 'sexiest song of all time' and I honestly can't disagree. The string/synth progression that loops through the song just captures longing and desire so perfectly. Madonna's spoken words are so husky and sexy, also erotic and almost frustrated... And the things she's saying are so profound. Honestly "Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another...love me...that's right... love me" gives me goosebumps. And that video. Ugh. The ultimate sexual frustration song.

FINAL TWO!

2. Vogue
GuJQSAiODqI
An anthem. Every component of the production of Vogue is perfection. I have gladly learnt all the lyrics to the spoken work section, from Greta Garbo to Monroe, Dietrich to Dimaggio. Honestly, the bit after that section where everything fades out to just the piano chords, then the bassline reenters, then the beat comes back in is BUSSY DESTROYING. UGH iconic!

1. Erotica
WyhdvRWEWRw
Genuinely one of the most artistic and atmospheric songs I've ever heard. This song is a stroke of sheer genius. The component parts of the song, from the rattling beat, to the throbbing bassline, to the atmospheric piano chords, to the horn sample, wouldn't conventionally be put together, but they combine so well here. As one site said, the song plays like your darkest fantasies in music form. Similarly to JML, the spoken word segments are just fantastic, and the chorus is so entrancing. The audio, along with the video is a genuine piece of art, and such a good hallmark for the Erotica, which is genuinely one of the most important albums in the sexual liberation of society. I will never tire of Erotica.

Well, this has been fun. Madonna is literally life. She has changed my perspective on music in the last eight months or so to quite an extent. She was my most listened Spotify artist for 2018 by quite some distance, and I don't regret it at all lol.
