The thing is.They’re targeting the wrong government.
Carbon emissions in the UK are 38% lower than they were in 1990.
That’s a fall from around 600 million tonnes of CO2 (MtCO2) in 1990 to around 367MtCO2 two years ago, according to new analysis by Carbon Brief.
The decline is largely due to a cleaner electricity mix based on gas and renewables instead of coal as well as falling energy demand across homes, businesses and industry.
UK greenhouse gas emissions down 2.5 percent as renewables hit record
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions fell 2.5 percent in 2018, dropping for a sixth straight year but more slowly than before, as record output of renewable power ate away at coal-fired generation, government data showed on Thursday.
Analysis: UK carbon emissions in 2017 fell to levels last seen in 1890
Carbon Brief analysis shows the UK’s CO2 emissions from fossil fuels fell by 2.6% in 2017, driven by a 19% decline in coal use.
This follows on the heels of a larger 5.8% drop in CO2 in 2016, which saw a record 52% drop in coal use. The UK’s total CO2 emissions are currently 38% below 1990 levels and are now as low as emissions were back in 1890.
They’re also targeting British people who recycle and do a lot more than people in many other countries.
All they’re doing is pissing off the wrong people.

tbh we should be pushing toward nuclear energy. It releases smaller amounts of co2 emissions than fossil fuels, and it would allow us to tell the middle east to go swing. Win-win.

Two things can be true at once - climate change can need addressing, and those protesters can try to do something about it in a way which doesn't piss everyone off.
Pissing people off is the last method of getting them to stand up and do something.

The group said it would mark "a new phase of rebellion" to achieve "political aims".
A total of 831 people have been arrested during the climate change protests and 42 people charged.
Hundreds of officers from other forces have been sent to London to help the Metropolitan Police.
Extinction Rebellion said it hoped to negotiate with the Mayor of London and the Met over continuing its demonstrations at Old Palace Yard, Westminster, and leaving other sites.]

How old are you going with this? it only really since the early 80s when consumerism has really took off and this has really driven climate change, older generations didn't have central heating, they didn't buy their veg smothered in plastic in fact most grew their own, most didn't take foreign holidays, or if they did it was once a year, they didn't have two cars sitting on the drive, they didn't buy clothes, wear them a few times and throw them away, they used bars of soap, not shower gels full of plastic beads, they didn't buy loads of old tut at Christmas or buy their kids loads of plastic toys all to end up in landfill, I could go on?

Yeah sorry, I agree with this tbh. Blaming older people is a cop out. Its not older people (speaking generally) buying all the plastic ****e. And most older people I know grow their own veg and stuff and are quite into recycling? Not sure where this version of older people you speak of comes from really, are most older people you know like that?! I find that..sad really. Speaking broadly, I have found older people care much more about global warming than younger ones. They consume less plastic tat crap, and seem to be more bothered about littering and recycling than most. I mean, these protesters have left behind hundreds of ****ing plastic bottles on the floor instead of cleaning uip after themselves, so clearly they DONT actually care about the environment? So why awre they protresting? Seems attention seeking to me to be quite honest, if they aren't actually bothered about global warming and that given they are contributing. if you found a Irn Bru bottle as kid you got 5p for it from the Icy or corner shop. 5p could buy you a lot of sweets (probably same a quid now). We would go looking for workies in building sites as they were always on the Irn Bru and sometimes would give you a fag
Mind you some people were on a mission to get bottles and would like get crates of them, they were called "bottle Genies" and were looked down upon :joker:

Not quite the same thing I know, but... but when my Dad was a kid he discovered that, behind the Green Shield Stamps shop in the High Street, there were bins full of redeemed books that had just been torn in half. He and his mates spent hours steaming them out and sticking them into new books and went on to have the finest toy collection in all of east London.

Well it's to do with dirty industrialization, not consumer lifestyle, but go off I guess
Do you understand how consumerism works? If no-one spends their money on things, they go away. If people stopped consuming the results of industrialisation, it would shrink and possibly die.

I have no problem with industrialisation or consummerism as such, both are essential. We just have to be clever about it, now that technology allows it.

Well Idk, but that ship has sailed in most of the world anyway.

Sir David Attenborough has directly supported students striking from school over climate change, saying outrage over lack of action to address the environmental crisis is “certainly justified”.
In an interview with former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres, the veteran BBC broadcaster and renowned naturalist said he found the wave of protests around the world enormously encouraging and dismissed critics of their tactics as cynics.
“[Young people] understand the simple discoveries of science about our dependence upon the natural world,” he said. “My generation is no great example for understanding – we have done terrible things.”
In the interview, reported by The Guardian, Sir David said the actions of young people were “the one big reason I have for feeling we are making progress. If we were not making progress with young people, we are done".
His support for the students comes as the 16-year-old girl who began the movement, Greta Thunberg, has been attacked in many parts of the British press.
This week Ms Thunberg accused the UK of “very creative carbon accounting”, pointing out that the government’s claims greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 42 per cent since 1990 was only accurate because it excludes emissions from international aviation, shipping and imports, and said the true figure was closer to a 10 per cent reduction.
The schoolgirl who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize last month for her work fighting climate change, started to miss school in protest at governments’ collective inaction, beginning outside the Swedish Parliament last August.
“Their outrage is certainly justified, there is no doubt about that,” Sir David said to Ms Figueres, who led the UN’s role in the Paris climate change agreement.
When she asked him about the world his great-grandchildren will live in, he replied: “I don’t spend time thinking about that because I can’t bear it.
“I’m just coming up to 93, and so I don’t have many more years around here. I find it difficult to think beyond that because the signs aren’t good.”
Sir David’s backing for the movement comes amid a huge surge in climate change awareness.
Yes, you can make a difference in the fight against climate change
Ten days of peaceful protests in the UK in which over 1,100 people were arrested and saw major transport routes blockaded, came to an end on Thursday.
On Friday, the youth strikes will continue with protests expected in 485 towns and cities in 72 countries, according to the Fridays for Future website, which logs the school strikes which take place on Fridays.
Ms Figueres said: “Greta and the other young people are justifiably furious with us. They say we have been at this for 30 years and we still haven’t solved this.”
She also backed the Extinction Rebellion protests, saying: “Civil disobedience happens when the injustice gets too great. That is where we are.”

I'm not gonna deny that. Nor would I deny they're starting to have a point.
I absolutely think we should be greener - switch to nuclear energy, electric cars, and stop destroying the countryside and woodlands. I just don't think the recent protesters' methods are the right way to go about it, especially as their demands were too nebulous to be taken seriously.
World leaders ignoring the facts about the environment have always existed too.The end is nigh, we're all doomed.
