I think this year will be the first where ratings fall, I imagine the whole aftercare drama would've put some people off.

I don't think it will match last years figures but it'll still do well, probably in the middle 3s.

It’s better than BB ratings by far in this climate. BB was at its peak when loads of people watched tv and tv shows got great ratings. A 5m average now is equivalent to about a 9m average then.

If you look at the difference between channels, and all shows in 2002-2005, and 2019 in terms of ratings it’s basicslly halved since. Love island would be on like 10m if you scaled it up

Love island is far more relevant now than BB ever was

You’re right in saying that, but also; BB never had the reach that Love Island does now, as it didn’t have as great catch up and on demand services available at such ease. There’s no reason to say that the 5.8m average for BB3 couldn’t have still been the same these days, but then easily 7 or 8 million with a wider audience also watching on demand etc. It isn’t really comparable

Even with the reach and the services available ratings still aren’t even close to what they used to be 15 years ago, still far lower. So BB would have been at like 3 million at its peak had it aired now and remained just as popular.

Basically every room you walk into people are taking about Love Island, they are where I work anyway and I work with different people everyday

Not really. Tim's eviction in BB3 was watched by over 8 million people. Also half way through BB3 ratings picked up to average between 6 and 7 million per highlights episode.

It launched with 6 million and ended with 10 million.

Love Island is killing it and i think people expected it to drop in the ratings this year but its only risen however its not reached the heights of BB3 and i dont think it will either as it doesn't represent a broad enough age range.

It’s doing far better. You can’t compare ratings of 2002 to ratings of 2019. Viewership of all television channels has halved since. Love Island getting 5 million would be the equivalent of it getting like 10 million in that time. Taking into account the date differences Love Island is far more relevant and larger than BB3 ever was

The officials are online views too. The number of people watching TV hasn't declined at all, people just choose to watch on catch up now using laptops or tablets because it's easier for them if they miss the show on TV. So, if you think about it, Love Island really should have more views and 5 million today is not in-fact equivalent to 10 million back in the day but 2.5 million because people have far more options to catch up on shows today then they did in 2002.

Greg!
27-06-2019, 06:02 PM
That's the answer

The logic doesn't make sense. If it was more relevant than BB3 it would have more viewers, especially as there's a lot more ways to catch up nowadays.

I'm not disputing that it's doing amazingly, but to say it's doing better than BB3 did is inaccurate. Soz if I'm coming across pedantic but its true! But who knows it could still grow and the officials could take over BB3's

I think you're underestimating how immense BB was in its peak, especially BB3.

It was everywhere and everyone was talking about it in the same way people do with Love Island now. The difference then was it was all magazines and tabloids as opposed to Twitter and Instagram.

Not to mention it made the most famous and successful BB housemate in Jade Goody, who was arguably a more well-known name than anyone from Love Island. You even had people like Johnny Depp appearing on Graham Norton supporting her.

I’m pretty sure, if anything, BB3 would be the one with bigger ratings if it aired today with even more ways for people to watch it than the 5-10 million who watched it live back then. Love Island gets 3 million live right now and another 3 on catch up, back in 2002 this live figure would probably be bigger yeah but the catch up one would be non existent (as it was with BB back then) - so imo it shows that BB was far bigger, if you can even try to compare

Gstar
28-06-2019, 12:39 PM
BB3 was huge in 2002 yes, but it wasn't the leading show on television. Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale were still very popular and was getting a lot more viewers. Shows like The Bill, Bad Girls and Bad Lads Army were also very popular and often got more viewers than BB3 as well.

When you compare this to 2019 where soaps are nowhere near as big and the only shows that get a "big" amount of viewers are IAC and BGT it does seem like Love Island is the go-to show and has definitely beat out all the local competition (Gogglebox, TOWIE, Hollyoaks) There isn't another big show on right now what everyone is talking about.

I get your point but the big 3 soaps still get bigger ratings than LI does now (which is crazy to me since you never really hear people talk about EE for example, maybe it’s bc it has more old skewing demographic)

Greg!

Yet IAC And BGT still get well above 10 million so this theory fails.

Why are people trying to disprove BB3's success? lol It was huge, without the help of catchup and online streaming and it also went up against the World Cup.

BB3 was massive and this years Love Island is huge, more so because it's on a digital channel but defo not as big a talking point as BB was back in the day (for us who can remember).

Do any of the islanders make it on the lunch/evening time news? Coz the housemates of BB3 did lol It was discussed amongst every age group not just the 13 to 35 year olds.

Let's all remember celebrity Love Island was created by ITV and put in direct competition with BB, It is at it's core a rip off of Big Brother but in the simplest way and something that most BB viewers werent interested in..Fake romances.

EDIT: Just seen your respect for BB3 response, it did really pave the way for other reality shows. That same year IAC launches and had live streaming just like BB. Everyone was trying to imitate it.

3.5 million average and 4.2 million peak last night, highest ever peak for Love Island and second highest rated episode to date only after last years final of 3.6 million - which is an incredible feat considering the football averaged 9 million and peaked at 11 million in the same time slot last night.

that's 5.9 million views more than our dutch love Island :fan:

which only had 100.000 viewers and most likely not returning for a second season, people over here just ignored it, even some filed a complaint for promoting it too much during commercials since they weren't interested in that show at all

They have stopped releasing the overnights every day now so they're a lot harder to come by unfortunately :(

All I do know is that it's been over 3m for over a week now, and last Monday was a new series high with 3.65 (although could have been beaten again by now). Officials later today

Wed - 5.93m (+2.53)
Thu - 5.71m (+2.51)

Just Week 6 averaged 5.8m, the overall series average is currently 5.6m.

Still fantastic ratings though and will probably match BB3's average by the end.

I hope it doesn't have as painful of a decline as BB did when people start to lose interest

I wonder what tricks they'll start pulling in a few years when figures start to drop - fake dumpings? Secret villa next door?

I mean they didn’t lie. BB3 got 5.8m overnight, before catchup, streaming etc existed.

Doesn’t take away from the fact that this series of LI is doing amazingly well though

Probably higher or same since the weather will be crap and it’s a bit shorter. I think next summer’s series will decrease as a result though, bc it won’t be seen as unmissable as it was before

Not a MASSIVE final in the end then -

3.63 million viewers and a 4.05 million peak. The most watched show ever but up only 10k on last year, and not as high as some of the peaks we had around Casa Amor. Still in comparison to anything else, phenomenal numbers

There basically different shows though, I saw an episode recently and the similarities are pretty much the name and that's it. The format is different I think and had a very different tone.

There even more different than BBUK & US.

V. good ratings but ironically the final actually has the lowest official of the entire series.
