Strictly Come Dancing 'completely open' to same-sex couples on show
BBC says such pairings could happen ‘should opportunity arise’
Strictly Come Dancing is “completely open” to having same-sex couples compete on the show in the future, the BBC has said.
In previous years, the broadcaster said it had no plans to change the mixed-sex format, despite calls from several of the show’s stars.
The BBC said it was open to the idea after a report in the Daily Mirror that same-sex pairings would be allowed from next year.
A spokesman at the corporation said: “Strictly Come Dancing is an inclusive show and we are proud to have featured same-sex dancing amongst the professional dancers in group numbers in previous series.
“We are completely open to the prospect of including same-sex pairings between our celebrities and professional dancers in the future, should the opportunity arise.”

The Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood has supported the idea of same-sex couples, previously saying he thought it would happen “eventually”.
“I think more and more people want it, the more it will happen,” he said.
“I have no argument against it. I think it would be rather fun. Maybe the BBC will be brave enough one day to do it.”
The rev Richard Coles, a previous contestant, said it made “no sense” that anyone would resist having same-sex couples taking to the floor together, while the Strictly professional dancer Kevin Clifton has said he would be happy to dance with another man on the show.
Last year, the show included a dramatic same-sex dance, for what was thought to be the first time.
The performance drew a positive reaction from fans, who were delighted to see the professionals dancing together outside of the usual male/female pattern

If a contestant requests it why not. There are some brilliant professional same sex couples out there. Same sex dancing has been a thing for ages, either out of necessity or choice. Nothing woke about it imo

The only way it could properly work is using Drag Queens like Australia did

two men dancing together would win, everyone would be so turned on watching and vote for them, so unfair if it was to happen.

Yes because every gay man loves the idea of Matt Lucas and Anton doing the Paso Doble

Kerstin and Regina's charleston to the scatman
PUKE, it deserved all 1's from judges honestly
and not just because it was a uncomfortable to watch same-sex couple, but Kerstin just cannot dance, even if she was paired with a male pro
I Say NO to same-sex dance couples, it's so uncomfortable for me to look at that :idc:

Believe me, two men with big muscles can do better lifting positions than a man and a woman :smug:

I've often seen people say they wont watch Love Island because its hetero couples, its just a preference of what you want to watch end of the day
I think it would be interesting and I am sure it won't be long before we see a same sex couple on strictly

You cant force them into uncomfortable positions especially when they dont really need to add same sex couples it would just be box ticking

I think most of the pros wouldn’t have a problem with it, there’s just no need for it and if anything, I think it would be quite insulting if they just paired up the token gays with male partners, like they’re not capable of dancing with a woman personally
Denver
31-08-2019, 12:10 PM
The problem is if they start making changes just for the sake of making a change that's when they lose viewers, it's the most popular show in The UK because it never changes the format
Denver

That's what I mean if it happens it happens but at the same time I dont think its needed whatsoever and it's not like they underrepresented the LGBTQ community

The only change should be is to stop make gay male celebs into camp performers? Like I swear every gale male they had has been super camp and just kind of feeds to the stereotype of gay men

yay to same-sex couples
but not if it doesn't give great dance quality, i'll have to see 2 men dance first, 2 women isn't a good idea (i know via lets dance, struggling with who must play the guy in the dance etc)
but 2 men can work i guess, we Always need 1 leading man in a dance, so the other just has to follow

+1
all of them will accept it, should it ever occur with one same-sex pairing
and otherwise they aren't good professionals, since pro's can learn to adapt into every situation, same-sex couple is way out of your comfort zone but you can gain a new experience i guess

URGH, i'm not a gay hater, and i wouldn't say no myself to being in a same-sex dance couple
although only 2 near my height are hot men Aljaz, Johannes, and i wouldn't want to be stuck with Anton
so yeah i'm open to same-sex dance couples, except i never want to see dance disasters like kerstin's again, so pls producers if you want it, get everything perfect then, maybe a male ringer and a male pro or a female ringer and a female pro

The whole tradition of ballroom dancing is a man and woman dancing together.
2 men or 2 women together is not needed for the show as it would just be box ticking in a world where everything must become PC.
It’s not about sexuality, it’s about dancing so there isn’t a need for same-sex couples.

Don’t see what’s wrong with what BBUK said tbh, although I think they should first try a same sex coupling in a xmas special as a one off and see how that goes down. Or even have a special where there all same sex dancing couples but I don’t think it should be mixed with the traditional way tbh, it doesn’t really physically make sense dance wise in my eyes
Niamh.

They say the same thing constantly I can't see it happening and I'd rather it didn't. The show doesn't have to be about sex or sexuality it's unnecessary. The male partner has to do different things than the female partner it's to do with dancing and that's what the scores are based on. Anything else is just confusing

I doubt they would force anyone.
Luckily Aljaz and Kevin already said they'd do it. And i bet some female pros would be up for a challenge.
Choreography-wise it would be quite interesting
I'd imagine most gay contestants would still opt for opposite sex. Eg Susan calman wanted to dance with a man but reverend Cole preferred a man
I'm sure I read somewhere a few years back that one of the gay professional was also against the idea
James Jordan did speak against in CBB14, yes
Same sex couples will be allowed from next year.

I'd welcome this but both the professional and celeb partner should have the choice to reject the idea.
