You can claim some circumstances but they want proof, e.g. my dad got out of it a few years ago because he had planned a month-long trip to Canada to visit family... but IIRC he had to actually send them proof of the flights / accomodation AND prove that it was booked before he got the summons.
That said being summoned doesn't mean you'll end up a juror, most are dismissed before the trial.
And if you do end up on a jury it's usually something **** and straightforward like drugs / theft. Hardly anyone gets to be on the jury of a "juicy" trial :(

i was called up a couple of times,I think you have to do it Michael unless you have circumstances that would make it difficult,I didnt go as I had small children, but go it will be interesting,I think they pay for your stays away if you have to and it might just be a simple case with no one going down, just a fine or something, you'll be fine.

When I fist for the letter I didn't want to do it.
But I went anyway and thought it was utterly fascinating.
But to be able to do the more serious trials you need the time to commit.
I can't do that with my work, it's very demanding.

Yes i agree ~ my daughter was called very young and it was a young black man on trial , she heard racist comments by other jury members ~ reported it and the trial was halted , and set for a new date with new jury , i was very proud of her speaking up.

My daughter and rest of jury were sent home as trial never took place, a lot of the others were annoyed with her but she did the right thing ~ she rang in the lunch break and said i want to report what's happened but should I , Yes you should its racist and nasty and this person has no right to be on a jury.
Its a responsibility that should be taken seriously without bias or predjudice.
