They will need to rearrange how the supermarkets/food shopping is done for everyone's safety if people are carrying on like that
tbf it only started today so many might have been unaware

We don't really know the personal circumstances of those buying, if you are a family of 4 buying for 2 sets of elderly relatives 3 tins of beans and 2 pints of milk just isn't enough is it?
The advice is to limit the amount of time you spend in supermarkets ... so is the answer not to stock up when you are there?

Stock up of course. But clearing the shelves of bread and milk every single day. Who knew people consumed that much. :omgno:

There have been a lot of community groups started to help the vulnerable, a neighbour may be shopping for those in the community?

Went to 5 different shops today and the shelves in all of them were either half empty or completely empty. No milk, no eggs, no bread, little to no meat. It’s absolutely ridiculous, even the crisp aisle in Tesco was practically half empty and of course no toilet roll but thankfully I managed to get some on Tuesday. There are no words for how greedy and selfish people are, it’s vile.

Yeah, it was a struggle but we managed to get most of what we needed but we couldn’t find any eggs at all or any antibacterial wipes for the kitchen so we’ll have to just use spray and sponges which isn’t too bad but we prefer wipes, the medicine aisle in Wilko was ridiculously empty.

not me, i have bought a few extra tins of chilli and curry and corned beef and meat paste but thats about it. The TL has stockpiled tins mainly. but we both have not stockpiled milk, bread, dog food etc. as we dont have the freezer space
Because the TL was due to be away for 5 weeks in Asia in June she had already bought dog food online for that duration for her mutts prior
and in a specific thread about panic buying, i dont think posting about panic buying is "bragging" You sound pressed because you have missed the boat?

I didn't stockpile I bought two extra packets of pasta, tea and stuff rather than the one extra that I would normally buy, I haven't got 20 pks to pasta stashed :nono: and I haven't bought anything extra since I did that 3 weeks ago, just shopping normally minus the pasta and eggs and TR

Supermarkets and their supply chains are beginning to buckle under the strain of customer behaviour in the face of coronavirus.
Several chains are "drastically cutting" the product ranges in store.
They also said they were telling their manufacturers to ignore making some products to focus on those for which there is greatest demand.
Meanwhile, competition laws are being relaxed so shops can discuss stock levels and pool staff and resources.
"We currently sell 60 types of sausages - we are moving to a fraction of that," said one supermarket.
Another said: "We need to make food manufacture as efficient as possible - it makes no sense to pause to change packet sizes or change from one type of pasta to another.
"We have 20 different sizes and styles of pasta, we are moving that to six."
Morrisons have reduced their bakery lines from 17 to seven.
While executives insisted there was no shortage of food, they were struggling to restock shelves fast enough. Meanwhile, online delivery services are running at "maximum capacity"

Has anyone seen the video of the nurse In tears and the picture of the paramedic left with no food? It's disgusting theses people need food as this are the people whose hands we put our lives in
As i keep saying people have quickly change within a few weeks from #BeKind to being completely selfish and inconsiderate to the vulnerable. No one needs that amount of toilet roll and other things.

And the fresh fruit and veg and milk and eggs all items that have short shelf dates so make no sense what so ever to stock pile as they will be wasted while someone goes without

Gav went shopping anyway, they had everything toilet roll, pasta, eggs etc but they had totally changed how they were allowing people to shop, a security guard was at the door to let people in as there was only a certain amount of people allowed in at a time and they'd set up a queue system that spaced everyone out. It took longer than usual but it was safer

All N.H.S. staff have I.D.badges that can be shown. They could then shop either before or after a shift.

Humans need bar codes on their heads so they can be tracked and allocated the right amount because they can’t be trusted.

My quandary is regards the food situation
We have at least 3 weeks of food to see us through ( the milk and bread will only last a week though) ... anyways it means we can stay in our little safe-house bubble and not venture out shopping in that period ..
Now our daughter things differently .. she reckons we should be getting the weekly shop in as usual for the next couple of weeks but be extra careful when shopping and then bolt the doors when the the situation gets worse / dangerous in two weeks or so time - as the government predicts ??

There's no proof that masks affect transmission rates at all and theres no benefit in surgical gloves over and above thoroughly washing your hands. In fact in some cases they make matters worse because people think that as they were wearing gloves, they don't have to wash their hands.

Do your normal weekly shops still, plus a little extra.
Then if you can’t get out you are ok for a fortnight.
I have my 2 shops a week booked as normal even though the pantry is still well stocked, not gone over the top stockpiling but we always keep a full pantry in case of emergencies.

It is at my nearest Tesco, quite a few people being told to wait outside whilst one person went in. Also quite a few elderly people out with a younger family member therefore having to choose between sending the elderly person in alone, or leaving them outside alone.
Not all that well thought out, in my opinion.

I mean... I don't really know what to say there. Probably, yes. The same is true in any shop and with any online delivery though and you have to eat so it's unavoidable. All you can do is try to minimise the risk of catching something... you unfortunately can't avoid it completely.
Just try to put that risk in perspective I guess.
You can't get into a car and drive down the road "risk free", all you can do is wear your seatbelt and drive as safely as you can to minimise the risk. There's not much in life that's risk-free. Maybe not anything at all.

True, and with things like a tin of beanz the best practice would be to wash your hands after you've taken it from the cupboard, emptied it and binned the container. I wash my hands constantly while cooking anyway out of habit (working as a pub grub chef when I was at Uni).

Went to the pharmacy and supermarket this morning both quiet with plenty of supplies, people were being very good with distance and following the rules
Went to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, and brought some Ibuprofen for a toothache for £2.99. Went to CO-OP for some milk, had tons of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol for 70p and 55p. First time I'd been out since the lockdown, read too much about all these shortages and 'panic' brought them in the pharmacy and am down £2.50  Oh well, got enough to stay in for while so all good.

I'd probably have more luck if I went early. I really want brownies. My wife made some last week (hummingbird recipe) and they were so good... But that was using the last 2 eggs :bawling:.

Pity you risk your life every time you go shopping or venture into buildings with others .
( the virus particles can stay in the air for up to three HOURS - meaning the two metre rule helps but it’s by no means a guarantee you won’t pick up the virus )

This is why newspapers need to be careful when reporting on scientific papers. Don't assume that the journalist writing the article has any idea what he's reading.

Please expand on your pressurised environments and the term ‘aerosolised form ‘ ..
The studies don’t seem to be as specific as you ..

Aerosolised form basically means it's been turned into micro-droplets and dispersed in a "very fine mist" form, that can happen in certain medical settings. It doesn't happen with a cough, sneeze, in breath... there's no real risk of aerosolised droplets being in a shop etc.
Also, essentially, both of your big fears can't be true at the same time. If Covid was hanging around in the air all over the place for hours, then the infection rates by this point would be massive - if they ARE massive, then the mortality %age risk is actually tiny. If the mortality risk is as high as you fear it is (5%+) then it's impossible for the virus to be truly airborne, as the death numbers would be higher.
Anyway, have had a google and the only really readable info is from the WHO itself. The rest is actual papers and extremely jargon-filled.
Airborne transmission is different from droplet transmission as it refers to the presence of microbes within droplet nuclei, which are generally considered to be particles <5μm in diameter, can remain in the air for long periods of time and be transmitted to others over distances greater than 1 m.
In the context of COVID-19, airborne transmission may be possible in specific circumstances and settings in which procedures or support treatments that generate aerosols are performed; i.e., endotracheal intubation, bronchoscopy, open suctioning, administration of nebulized treatment, manual ventilation before intubation, turning the patient to the prone position, disconnecting the patient from the ventilator, non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation, tracheostomy, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

That's a WHO scientific brief from the 29th of March (the article you posted is from the 11th). I do remember reading the info on aerosolization probably around the 15th-20th but can't find the specific things I read at the time.

Walked straight into M and S yesterday...no queue
Queued for 25 minutes at Sainsbury’s even though the queue was twice that of the previous week but took same amount of time to get in...prob because they stopped people shopping in couples ...everything back to normal...a wall of TP and kitchen roll, pasta and flour
While we were in the queue a couple arrived she was heavily pregnant, they told the security guy that they had something on order from Argos and asked if they had to queue, she let them in 10 minutes she came out with a small item...no sign of him so I expect he was inside shopping with a basket :fist:

I think it was insane she used her pregnancy to skip the line, I didn't mind them skipping the line so much as I think it would be ****e to have something on order in Argos and have to queue for 25 minutes for it, its just the fact that they were happy for her to be out and about hugely pregnant and used that to skip the queue, he was obviously shopping inside after she left, yeah stay at home, stay in the car whatever just don't put yourself and your unborn at risk, and they got up close to the staff member as well who was wearing a tabard with keep a 2m distance in huge red letters on a white background
