I don't understand the logic, the virus is supposed to be contained. Why don't we all go out then drinking etc seen its ok for infected prisoners too .

I think they're handling it as well as can be expected. We have had nothing like this before that people can call on for experience. 100 years ago there was a flu pandemic, but society is very different now, and there are far more people. Well give them the choice .. stay in and serve HALF of their actual sentence.. or get out even earlier and do those non-skilled jobs ( and get paid !) that will be need to be filled .. .
Much better than putting out army / navy :air force guys to work which has been suggested
