Right not being funny but I sent an email at 5pm asking for further details on a flat, the woman came back to me at 2pm saying I’d need to fill in a form then when I asked for it she replied just now saying sorry someone else has made an offer :fist:

Bitch maybe if you replied to my email straight away it woulda been me :fist:

It might not seem fair to people searching for a home, but when it comes to finding a renter the ball really is in the court of the owners/agency. They don't have any rush at all because chances are, someone's moving in.

Actually on Watchdog earlier there was some good advice, make sure your deposit is going into a government backed scheme, not into the hands of an unscrupulous landlord :fist:

Actually on Watchdog earlier there was some good advice, make sure your deposit is going into a government backed scheme, not into the hands of an unscrupulous landlord :fist:

It's a requirement now I believe, they can get fairly large fines if it's not in a deposit scheme. When we moved houses down in England (10 years ago, not long after my eldest was born) the landlord tried to keep nearly 3/4 of the deposit. When I asked about what scheme it was in he said it wasn't in one as it was a "bond, not a deposit" :hehe: so I mentioned that I'd see if the local council agreed on that definition. He turned up at our new place that evening with the whole deposit in cash and "£20 as a present for the baby" :joker:.

user104658
12-08-2020, 08:58 PM
WHICH almost made up for my University landlord, who (pre deposit scheme) kept our entire deposit (£1400 between 4 of us) citing a tonne of "cleaning and damages charges" despite us spending days cleaning the place before we left. Shouldn't have bothered. He was notorious for that though - he owned dozens of student properties, great landlord & nice as pie while you were in one of his houses - dodgy bastard as soon as you moved out.

Not yet, I need to call the agent later today

I’ve spent most of the morning trying to work out how to sort out all the bloody import documentation for my car :fist:

Have to tell HMRC, potentially pay any VAT due :fist:, then get a certificate to say it’s legal in the UK THEN an MOT and THEN finally register it

Cherie
17-08-2020, 11:02 AM
If your parents are happy to keep you for a while, maybe don't rush into anything, think about you options especially if you have a lot of savings and could potentially buy a place once you have a job, but then maybe you need to move to Manchester to get a job, I don't know just thinking out loud

Smithy
17-08-2020, 11:14 AM
Yeah I’ve just called up about one flat and they said are you in full time employment and I said no but I’ve spoken to other letting agents and they were happy to provide a six month lease paid upfront prior to a review and they said they wouldn’t do that :fist:

Not wishing to sound like your Ma, but just be careful with the all rent up front thing, you have no comeback if anything goes wrong with the flat, for instance if the boiler breaks down and you have no hot water/heating the landlord has his/her cash so can take their sweet time getting a plumber round as you cant withhold rent until its fixed

Don’t want to burst your bubble but if If it’s a nice flat be prepared to be messed around by the agent who will probably have quite a bit of interest, also I think you will struggle without proof of income from a job unless you are moving with someone who has one lined up

Yes, well this thread is about Big girl Smithy. He's moving to Manchester, not a shack in Brigadoon.

Have you seen Manchester (especially Salford where I think smithies looking)? I think Salford has one of the highest crime rateA in the entire Uk

Well it’s a start on a new adventure in your life and half bills is always better than full price bills.

I’d struggle with sharing to be honest.

Well I have GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! The update I know tibb had been waiting for!

So following my hostage hell I moved back to Lancaster and I’ve been looking for flats and jobs since

I started my new role last week and I’ve managed to snag myself a GORGEOUS flat (on my own this time :eyes:) in the centre of Manchester and I (hopefully) move in on the 29th :amazed:

I’ve ordered a load of stuff for it, but any suggestions of what else I need will be appreciated!

So far I’ve got a huge kitchenware set, microwave and toaster (so I think I’m all set for the kitchen), bedding, towels, mop and bucket, a Hoover

What else do I need?

Ah great news Smithy....hopefully by then we will be in Tier 2 too. Sounds like you're all set on the house front, once you're in and settled you'll probably realise there is other stuff you need. Glad you managed to move past the hostage hell and it didn't put you off Manchester

...Smithy.....a wonderful new start and everything falling into place for you now...I wish you such happiness......the ‘essentials’ will make themselves known quite quickly and you’ll get them as you go along...but get a great pic of GaGa for your wall...something that puts you straight into the flat and makes it totally yours and your home...

How exiting :) really pleased for you :D Let me think have you got a toilet brush? Tea towels, washing up sponges, kitchen bin and waste paper bins, laundry basket, clothes airer, Those plug in air fresheners are nice ..most important a kettle.

If it's laminate flooring you can't use a mop on it you know.
