She was in some Disney stuff as a kid, now i think she's a model/singer.

I only heard about her during that fat shaming thing though. It was Ice Cream apparently, she claimed the store fat shamed her by selling 'diet' products.

They're discussing their gender, not their sex.

To be fair, some do it point fly but for some it’s just a lot to expect everyone to instantly remember a change.

Also people see Demi and automatically still think "she" & "her" that's just a fact , but also what people need to remember is not all of them mind if you still refer to them as that as it's more fluid.

I always think of prince in a scenario like this. One day he decided that he should be referred to as symbol, but the simple fact is, it's just not something you can change over night, if at all. One could argue that you are never described as you would choose yourself, because your own perception of who/what you are just doesnt match with whatever anyone else think of you

This is nice and everything but Demi does have a bit of a history of doing stupid attention-seeking things, so I understand why some would be sceptical / just writing this off as a trend/fad.

It's unfortunate that the two biggest profile NBs are Demi and Sam Smith because the public perception of both is... pretty bad. Not that that excuses the willful trolling in here.

In that case you should be "they" because you're as big as two people :hehe:

But nah, she "came out" so music reviewers tabloid articles use the "correct" pronouns, I guess...

The unfortunate reality is that when anything starts to become more mainstream, there are some people who will join the “trend” just to be part of the scene. I know that’s a taboo line of thought because it can lead to doubting people who are genuine but well... it simply is the case. My daughter came out as gay about a year ago, no one else in her social circle was, she was obviously nervous about telling people but decided to do so. She has a girlfriend who is also quite obviously genuinely gay. The kids were all, surprisingly for me (as it would NOT have been like this when I was at school) totally unphased by this and she’s really encountered zero negativity...

...the strange part is that the rest of the girls in the class started pairing off :joker:. There’s 14 girls in the class and there are now only FOUR of them who are not in a same-sex couple :joker:. It’s all harmless of course and I’m sure there are a couple of others who may well be gay or bi, but we’ve had to explain to her that it’s unlikely that 80% of the girls in her class are actually gay!

It’s a lot to expect everyone to remember a change when it’s literally the topic of the thread?

When prince decided he wanted to be known as a "squiggle" everyone ignored that and called him Prince

People type a stream of consciousness and the word that comes out comes out. You could argue that people should take the time to proof-read their posts and make sure to change things like a pronoun (however, realistically most people don’t double check a forum post before they hit send) but it’s a lot to expect that people are in tight control of conversational language. It takes time. It’s like if a friend you’ve known for years by a nickname declares that they hate it - of course you stop consciously using it, but occasionally it’s going to slip out.

I did also say that obviously some people do it pointedly and by all means call that out. But a policy of blanket anger and disappointment at “incorrect pronouns” is really not the way.

Yeah I can’t see it being done out of anything other than intention by most people.
It’s Demi Lovato, it’s not like they’re usually a hot topic on the forum and people are “slipping up”.

The edit function is there, I can’t see that it’s been used by those who have referred to Demi as she/her?

where is it stated that people should be called as they wish to? Plenty people on this forum have been described using terms they most certainly don't like but nothing ever happens about that

No-one "has" to use preferred pronouns, but it's seen as polite.

When women identify as transmen or as nonbinary, there seems to be a co-morbidity with a history of sexual abuse, which Demi Lovato has been subject to at least twice ... Some kind of coping mechanism, perhaps? Seems to mostly apply to females, as it doesn't seem to be the case with men who identit as transwomen or as nonbinary.

Yeah, ok.

So do the DM have to now write "Demi Levato was in Paris Friday for a charity gig, them wore a lovely over the shoulder number from Prada and then they visited a lovely chique cafe on the banks of the Seine. Them will be in Paris for 2 nights and then them will be on the first flight back to LA"?

I cant see this catching on somehow

Replacing the word "they" with "them" says more about your grasp of English than it does Demi Lovato?

That would be “Her wore a lovely over the shoulder number” so you just did a bad job of changing the pronouns LT. All of those would be “they” and it reads fine on that basis; albeit with the issue that it’s harder to distinguish singular from plural if a lot of people are using the singular “they”.

It isn’t incorrect English, however.

it becomes undefined which is the basis of them doing it.

It's perfectly typical grammar to use when you don't know the sex of who you are referring to, going back decades

You haven't made any point. You've tried to make out the pronouns of they/them won't allow actual sentences to be made in place of she/her by using bad English.
That's a 'you' issue.
